With 2010's "Toy Story 3," Pixar and director Lee Unkrich were faced with punishingly high expectations. Besides the first two entries in the series being certified modern animated classics, there was also the question of purpose. For Pixar, a production company known at the time for its refusal to do sequels unless there was a story to justify one, to do a sequel over a decade after the previous entry, something good must have been in store.
The original "Toy Story," which was released in 1995, changed animation forever. Its 1999 sequel -- a moving allegory for the stages of life -- managed somehow to be even better. A follow-up couldn't simply take viewers back to the world of toy cowboy Woody (Tom Hanks) and toy astronaut Buzz (Tim Allen). Nor could it take the eventual route of "The Incredibles 2," which ignored the gap in time between movies. The series was always surprisingly deep,...

“The idea of doing a Christmas movie musical with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds was like an instant ‘hell yeah!’ for us,” declares Oscar, Grammy and Tony-winning songwriter Benj Pasek about working on Apple Original Films’ Christmas movie musical “Spirited.” Pasek is one half of the acclaimed hit-making duo alongside fellow awards magnet Justin Paul, who both wrote and produced the film’s soundtrack, with collaborators Khiyon Hursey, Sukari Jones and Mark Sonnenblick co-writing three of the songs in the film.

Chicago – Patrick McDonald of HollywoodChicago.com appears on The Eddie Volkman Show with Hannah B on Wssr-fm on November 23rd, reviewing the holiday musical “Spirited,” a reimagined version of Charles Dickens “A Christmas Carol, currently streaming on Apple TV+.

This version presupposes that the three Spirits of the story visit a different person every year, instead of just Ebenezer Scrooge the one time, part of a singing and dancing “Ghost of Christmas Inc.” with a large support staff. Filmmaker Sean Anders has long wanted to make a musical, so when he and his filmmaking partner John Morris were talking aimlessly about how the ghosts are the real protagonists of “A Christmas Carol,” they wondered if this riff on the Charles Dickens classic – telling the story from the point of view of the ghosts, not the haunted individual – might finally be a fit for the genre.
But with “Spirited” (which is currently streaming on Apple TV+), Anders added another twist to the story: what if the ghosts’ haunt was treated like a film production, and he embraced the theatricality of the staging and prep work needed to prepare a haunt by incorporating it into the movie?
“When we first started talking about it, you can’t just go in and haunt somebody. There has to be some forethought,” the “Instant Family” and “Horrible Bosses 2” director told TheWrap in a recent interview.

Each Christmas Eve, the Ghost of Christmas Present selects one dark soul to be reformed by a visit from three spirits. But this season, he picked the wrong Scrooge. Clint Briggs turns the tables on his ghostly host until Present finds himself reexamining his own past, present and future.
Few things are able to put a bigger smile on my face than watching a legitimately excellent Christmas movie. Of course, just like a ton of people out there, every holiday season I have a number of films that I watch as a tradition, including Home Alone and National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.
Well, folks, I think I might have to add another movie to my yearly holiday watchlist. Sean Anders‘ Spirited is a tremendously cheery, heartwarming, and whimsical Christmas-themed musical...

Ryan Reynolds is back. Again. Following the rollercoaster of emotions regarding Deadpool 3, the latest feature from the actor sees him putting on his dancing shoes for his upcoming Christmas feature, Spirited. It’s the classic Charles Dickens story of the ghosts of Christmas past, present, and future visiting a grumpy Scrooge aka Clint Briggs. The twist here is that the perspective is told from the ghosts, which are played by Will Ferrell. The feature is directed by Sean Anders, with the writing credits going to Anders and John Morris. We’ve seen Reynolds play many characters, but

At this point it is almost impossible to count the number of remakes, ripoffs, variations, takeoffs and general thievery on the part of filmmakers riffing on Charles Dickens’ classic A Christmas Carol. The latest imitation, Spirited, isn’t even the only new version to debut this season; I can count at least two others still waiting for liftoff as the yuletide tidings continue in 2022. But this one has some real firepower in terms of who is involved with the Apple TV+ original film, chief among them stars Ryan Reynolds and Will Ferrell, who deliver a take most closely aligned with Bill Murray’s modern 1988 Scrooged, a homage even noted in the rat-a-tat snarky script here by John Morris and Sean Anders (Daddy’s Home), the latter who also directed.

Plot: In the musical adaptation of A Christmas Carol, the Ghost of Christmas Present attempts to bring a bit of holiday cheer to a ruthless fellow named Clint Briggs.
Review: The world is a crazy place right now. Why not just tune into a magical Christmas musical with stars of stage and screen delighting in song after song? Mainly when those stars include Will Ferrell, Ryan Reynolds, and Octavia Spenser. Wait, what? Yes, that was my reaction to a holiday musical featuring those three singing and dancing. While Mr. Reynolds occasionally lends his singing voice in other parts of the world to television shows and such, and Mr. Ferrell loves to sing in general, it wasn’t something I expected to see. And here we are, with the comedic movie musical Sainted where they sing and dance. A whole lot.
Sainted is a modern telling of A Christmas Carol, but with a huge twist.

Though the sappy message in “Spirited” preaches that people can change, this spiffy musical comedy sure feels like an homage to tried-and-true Hollywood classics. , like a loud sweater or syrupy fireside cocoa. Proudly wearing its adaptation status on its sleeve, “Spirited” turns Charles Dickens’ “A Christmas Carol” into a contemporary feel-good comedy — with flashy musical numbers to boot.
Reprising some of the shenanigans of his lovable “Elf” character, reliable funnyman Will Ferrell plays a jovial ghost of Christmas present opposite a dastardly Ryan Reynolds as a modern day Scrooge. Bolstered by a stellar ensemble, both Ferrell and Reynolds make surprisingly charming showmen, impressing with confident crooning — and even some light choreo. It’s refreshing to see two stars who could have easily phoned it in for the rest of their careers push themselves to try new things.
Even more thrilling, they really can sing!

The new film "Spirited" has somehow figured out how to do a hat-trick of gimmicks. Throughout the history of cinema, there has been a bevy of countless adaptations of Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol", and many of them -- especially in recent years -- are gimmick-heavy. Some are musicals, like "The Muppet Christmas Carol"; some are modern, like "Scrooged"; and some are nightmarishly animated, like Robert Zemeckis' mo-cap version with Jim Carrey. Rare is the film with multiple gimmicks, yet "Spirited" is that unicorn. Is it modern? Is it a musical? Check and check. But the one twist that "Spirited" offers to separate itself from the pack is this: it's set from the Pov of the ghosts haunting a Scrooge-like figure. In that respect, and many others, "Spirited" feels like it was built on the factory floor of Apple, combined of spare parts and made slick in the hopes of impressing audiences,...

Will Ferrell’s signature comedy style is halfway between obnoxious and endearing, a naïve man-child whose excitable energy is matched by his fearless disregard for dignity. Anyone who’s been missing that persona should find something to enjoy in Spirited, Ferrell’s bid to headline another holiday perennial to sit alongside Elf. His delivery remains inspired and his chemistry with Ryan Reynolds, playing the smarmy Scrooge figure in this busy 21st-century riff on A Christmas Carol, has lots of fizz, even if a supposed romance with Octavia Spencer’s character doesn’t. But is the movie any good?
That will depend on how closely you identify with the delicious disdain of Patrick Page as the chain-rattling Jacob Marley, upholder of the Dickensian tradition, who rolls his eyes and begs for a reprieve almost every time someone bursts into song. Because, yes, it’s a musical.

Nothing makes me feel Scroogier than a slapped-together Christmas movie, which, thanks to the algorithms of tech-companies-turned-content-creators, start to drop in late October (even before Halloween) at a rate of nearly a dozen a week. This year, Netflix has entries planned with Lindsay Lohan and Freddie Prinze Jr., Disney+ is doing “The Hip Hop Nutcracker,” Lifetime gives us “Merry Textmas” and more, while Hallmark Channel has “#Xmas” and “Three Wise Men and a Baby,” in addition to its annual Luke Macfarlane canoodle.
You’ll be lucky to find a single keeper among the 150-plus new holiday movies heading to streaming platforms and cable networks this season (that number is not an exaggeration). Which is why the only one I’ll be reviewing is “Spirited,” an Apple Original Films offering with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds — a musical featuring fresh tunes from “La La Land” songwriters Pasek and Paul — that’s...

Paramount Pictures has released a holiday trailer for Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg's Daddy's Home 2. The two actors reprise their roles as Brad and Dusty and this time they are joined by their fathers, who are hilariously played by John Lithgow and Mel Gibson. This sequel actually looks like it will be better than the first film and like it will bring on the laughs! This is a funny trailer that I think some of you will enjoy!

Their newfound partnership is put to the test when Dusty’s old-school, macho Dad (Mel Gibson) and Brad’s ultra-affectionate and emotional Dad (John Lithgow) arrive just in time to throw the holiday into complete chaos.

Daddy's Home was a decent comedy that had its moments, but this sequel looks like it could be so much more funny. Daddy's Home 2 features the return of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg as two fathers who have come to work together as friends and co-dads for the benefits of their kids. What takes things to a new level is the fact that their dads are coming to visit for Christmas and they are awesomely played by Mel Gibson and John Lithgow! That casting alone is enough to make me want to see this movie, the fact that the sequel actually looks good though is definitely a plus. The trailer also gives us our first look at John Cena as another dad that is thrown into the mix.

Whilst Star Wars: The Force Awakens was taking lots of money last Christmas, so another movie was quietly mopping up a few quid of its own. Daddy’s Home, starring Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell in the lead roles, earned $240m worldwide pretty much without anyone noticing. Paramount is pushing ahead with Daddy’s Home 2, bringing together the entire dysfunctional family that helped fire the original comedy to a relatively healthy box office haul – to the tune of $240 million, no less.
Of those family members on board for the sequel are director Sean Anders (Horrible Bosses 2, Mean Moms) and perhaps most important of all, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Yes, Paramount’s two warring patriarchs are ready for round two, and the studio will be hoping to build another comedic crowd-pleaser on the pair’s undeniable chemistry.
No details were disclosed regarding the story, but we do know that John Morris will once again take point for scripting duties. Further still, Paramount didn’t allude to the chances of Hannibal Buress, Linda Cardelini and/or Thomas Haden Church reprising their roles from Daddy’s Home, though expect more details to arise as the comedy sequel inches closer to a production start.

If you were one of the $240 million worth of audience members to see last year's Daddy's Home -- and you enjoyed the flick -- then you're in luck, as it looks like Paramount is set to make a sequel to the successful comedy. According to Deadline, both Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have signed on to reprise their roles as Brad Whitaker and Dusty Mayron, respectively.
But the leading star talent are the only ones returning for this sequel. Also heading back for a second helping are co-writers John Morris and Sean Anders, the latter of whom will also be returning to the director's chair.
Given the premise of the first film, it's hard to imagine the writers would be able to repeat the same formula. As such, one has to wonder where they'll take things in the next film. Unfortunately for us, the logline and premise of the film are currently under wraps,...

I didn't bother seeing Daddy's Home, the dad vs. step-dad comedy that starred Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg, but apparently enough people did go check it out that a sequel has been given the greenlight. Deadline reports that Ferrell and Wahlberg — who evidently like working together after this and The Other Guys — are coming back for the untitled sequel, while Sean Anders and John Morris will return to write the script and Anders will be back to direct once again.
The outlet points out that the original movie inexplicably made more money overseas than any other Will Ferrell film thus far, which seems kind of crazy to me. But I guess the premise of fathers and step-fathers facing off is more relatable to international audiences than '70s television anchors, Aba basketball players, Nascar drivers, or absurd figure skaters. Will you watch the Daddy's Home sequel? Leave your plot pitches in the comments below.

Paramount Pictures and Gary Sanchez Productions have setup a sequel to the crowd-pleasing comedy "Daddy's Home".
Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg have signed on to reprise their mismatched buddy characters, while original scribes Sean Anders and John Morris are also returning to write the script and Anders to direct.
The storyline of the follow-up is being kept under wraps, and no word as yet if other supporting actors such as Hannibal Buress, Linda Cardellini and Thomas Haden Church will also return.
The first film opened last Christmas and racked up a $240 million worldwide gross.

Released a week after "Star Wars: The Force Awakens," you probably weren't paying attention to Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg's "Daddy's Home," but Paramount's counter-programming comedy was a smart move by the studio. The film quietly amassed a staggering $150 million domestic, some career-best numbers for both actors, and it picked up an additional $90 million overseas. And now, the studio wants more. Read More: Review: 'Daddy's Home,' Starring Will Ferrell, Mark Wahlberg, Linda Cardellini, Hannibal Buress & Thomas Haden Church Paramount has reupped Ferrell and Wahlberg for the sequel, along with screenwriters Sean Anders and John Morris, with Anders directing. There's no word yet on the plot but **spoilers** the movie does end with John Cena riding in as the potential villain for Ferrell and Wahlberg to team up against in the battle for fatherly love. **end spoilers** And while I didn't particularly care for the movie, I hope they bring back Thomas Haden.

That’s His Boy: Anders Brings Us Broken Homes for the Holidays with Flaccid Comedy
Chances are, you might not have been expecting much from Sean Anders’ latest directorial effort, Daddy’s Home, a PG-13 reunion of Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg following 2010’s decently regarded The Other Guys. Why the film studio chose Christmas weekend to blight theaters with this ungainly misfire of clichéd masculinity seems to be someone’s idea of what constitutes as ‘counterprograming’ to court the film’s main demographic, which would be folks who enjoyed other Anders titles, such as the Adam Sandler flick That’s My Boy (2012) and Horrible Bosses 2 (2014). In fact, one would expect Sandler to pop up here considering the utter weariness of Anders’ screenplay, co-written by John Morris and Brian Burns. Instead, Ferrell and Wahlberg depend on their own worst tendencies in this agonizingly superficial and ultimately offensive film which...

In news that Mean Girls fans will find far from fetch, director and co-writer Sean Anders has admitted that the Jennifer Aniston led Mean Moms, the spin-off to the cult 2004 comedy, is currently in hiatus. However, despite the fact that progress on the film has stalled, Sean Anders remains hopeful that it will still come to the big screen. Because he really, really wants it to. Sean Anders, who has already signed up to co-write Mean Moms alongside his writing partner John Morris, as well as direct it too, admitted to me earlier today that there is currently no future in sight for Mean Moms. However he’s still fighting hard for it to enter production and be released. It is currently in a holding pattern right now. We just had a meeting with the studio last week and we are waiting for it to be officially greenlit. ...

While the two actors were very much on the same side for 2010’s hilarious buddy cop comedy The Other Guys, Sean Anders and John Morris’ upcoming family comedy Daddy’s Home finds Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg at loggerheads as they try to constantly one-up each other in what they describe as a good old fashioned ‘dad-off.’
It’s all in an effort to win over the affection of Wahlberg’s kids. He plays a cocksure and dashing ex-lover who is essentially the ying to Ferrell’s buttoned-up yang. Throwing a spanner in the works when he returns home to his ex-wife, the mere presence of Wahlberg’s freewheeling Dusty tees up a fierce competition between the two leads, and today’s array of clips showcase the mano-a-mano standoff that ensues.

Reteaming after The Other Guys, Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are back together for Daddy’s Home, which finds them once again going toe-to-toe. In the forthcoming comedy, Ferrell plays the stepdad of a family only to have the biological father (Wahlberg) return home as they try and one-up each other with various hijinks.
Coming from directors Sean Anders and John Morris (Horrible Bosses 2, Sex Drive, That’s My Boy), a new trailer has now landed which shows off more of their dynamic. With such a packed release slate this December, one wonders if this will get lost in the shuffle, but hopefully it provides as much laughs as their last outing. Also starring Linda Cardellini, Hannibal Buress, and Paul Scheer, check out the trailer below ahead of a Christmas release.

"If this guy was my wife's ex...!" Paramount has released the second official trailer for Sean Anders & John Morris' Daddy's Home, a family comedy coming up this holiday season starring Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg. Daddy's Home is about a nice, low-key stepdad, played by Will Ferrell, who encounters some difficulties integrating with the family and the real father, played by Wahlberg. The cast includes Linda Cardellini, Thomas Haden Church, Alessandra Ambrosio and Paul Scheer. I don't know about everyone else, but isn't my kind of comedy, and I'll probably just be seeing Star Wars for the 10th time when this hits theaters anyway. But this works as good counter-programming. If you need a laugh, look elsewhere. The casting earlier today of Zac Efron alongside Dwayne Johnson in the upcoming "Baywatch" movie promises plenty of on-screen beefcake in this big screen take on the popular 1990s series about California beach lifeguards.
One thing that people aren't quite sure on though is the project's tone. Previously it has been described as something akin to the "21 Jump Street" franchise - an action comedy both respectful and playfully sending up its original material. Now comes word from Johnson himself via social media that there's going to be no holding back on the humor as it sounds like the film plans to wear an R rating with pride:

With Horrible Bosses 2 directors Sean Anders and John Morris at the helm, Daddy’s Home sees The Other Guys co-stars Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg put their fantastic chemistry to work yet again as Ferrell’s life with his new wife (Linda Cardellini) and her two kids is upended when their dead beat real dad (Wahlberg), uncomfortable with the idea that his off spring have a new step-dad, enters the picture. There is a lot of good will coming off the pairs excellent work together in The Other Guys that will surely help Daddy’s Home, but from what we see from the above trailer, there is a solid comedy here, and the two leads, especially Wahlberg do seem to be having a lot of fun. After their onscreen partnership in the Adam McKay comedy The Other Guys, Mark Wahlberg and Will Ferrell are back together and are battling it out for dad of the year in the first trailer for Daddy’s Home. Sean Anders and John Morris (who wrote Horrible Bosses 2 and Dumb and Dumber To) are the directors, and the film is written by Brian Burns (who worked in the writers’ room of Entourage and Blue Bloods). Here’s the synopsis:
When a divorced guy’s ex-wife re-marries someone way more uptight, he re-enters her life and wreaks havoc.
Mark Wahlberg is the ‘divorced guy’ making things very difficult for Will Ferrell’s character, who just wants to be a good dad to his step-children. While their chemistry worked in The Other Guys, it’ll be interesting to see how they work together as rivals. But from what the trailer gives us,...

Will Ferrell and Mark Wahlberg are at war over their kids' affections in the hilarious first trailer for Daddy's Home.
The two stars of hit comedy The Other Guys reunite in Daddy's Home as Ferrell plays the mild-mannered stepdad of Linda Cardellini's precocious children.
Just when it looks as if a bond is forming in this new family, all hell breaks loose when the children's much cooler biological dad (Wahlberg) turns up for a visit.
The stakes continue to rise as both men compete in the ultimate battle for fatherly supremacy.
Daddy's Home is produced by Ferrell's frequent collaborator Adam McKay (Anchorman) and directed by the duo Sean Anders and John Morris.
Paramount Pictures recently scheduled Daddy's Home to open on Christmas Day in the Us and the UK.

New Line scored a box office hit last fall with Horrible Bosses 2, so it makes a lot of sense that the studio would want to reteam the creative players behind that sequel on additional projects. Excitingly, the stars appear to be aligning already for one such reunion – director Sean Anders has been set to helm female-driven comedy Mean Moms, with Jennifer Aniston circling the lead role.
The A-lister has been eyeing the project, described as Mean Girls with an adult cast, since last February, but she’ll need to make a decision soon, given that New Line is revving up for a summer shoot. Aniston, who just lost out on an Oscar nomination for her transformative performance in dark drama Cake, reportedly has her pick of projects this summer, so it’s unclear whether Mean Moms is high on her list. At press time, no deal had been signed.

Two decades after Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels’ endearingly dense pairing spun slapstick comedy into box office gold in Dumb and Dumber, the long-awaited sequel, Dumb and Dumber To, arrives on DVD and Blu-ray Combo Pack and On Demand on February 17, 2015 from Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. One of the most anticipated films of 2015 is Martin Scorsese’s Silence. Although that anticipation was under the presumption that Silence would actually come out this year, let alone be made. The film has been in pre-production for ages, by Marty’s account, nearly two decades, but the film is finally coming together with funding from Fábrica de Cine and SharpSword Films, Deadline reported.
Silence stars Andrew Garfield and Adam Driver (yes, he’s in Everything now) as two Jesuit priests in 17th Century Japan on a mission to spread Christianity and locate their mentor, played by Liam Neeson. The pair face incredible, violent persecution while on their journey, and the film has been likened to Scorsese’s last East Asia epic, Kundun.
