It's always great to hear about a big company taking time out of their busy schedules to make one person happy. In this case, the person is the 4-year-old Anthony Smith, and the company is Marvel. Anthony was born without a right ear and cannot hear from that side at all. He also suffers from hearing loss in his other ear, which is why he wears a hearing aid. But just recently, he decided he will never again wear the aid again, because superheroes don't wear them either. His mother had trouble convincing him otherwise and decided to send an email to Marvel Comics for some assistance finding an example of a superhero with a hearing aid. Marvel responded with an image of Hawkeye, a superhero who lost 80% of his hearing and wears hearing aids. But the company didn't stop there. They later sent a drawing of Anthony as a new superhero,...

Here is a story that is very inspiring. Anthony Smith, who is four years old, is a big comic book fan. He can't hear on his right ear, and he also suffers from hearing loss in the other ear. Smith wears a hearing aid, but one day he woke up and decided not to put it on. My Fox Boston has more info: "Anthony told his mother that superheroes don't wear hearing aids. His mother decided to look to Marvel Comics for some assistance. She e-mailed the comic empire known for its popular superheroes like Spider-man and the Avengers, looking for examples of superheroes who suffer from hearing loss." "Marvel responded with the image of a superhero known as Hawkeye, a superhero who lost 80-percent of his hearing and wears hearing aids. Marvel didn't stop there. They later sent Anthony a drawing of a new superhero, "Blue Ear." The character...

Alright kids, here's your feel-good story of the day. When 4-year-old Anthony Smith received his first hearing aid -- called "Blue Ear" -- things really started to come together. Anthony, who lost all hearing in his right ear and has substantial hearing loss in his left, was finally hearing better and talking more thanks to that little device. However, things took a turn for the worse when Anthony refused to wear the hearing aid because, according to him, superheroes don't wear hearing aids. And as a superhero-obsessed little boy, this was kind of a big deal. Enter: Anthony's mom, who on a whim emailed Marvel to ask them for help. 24 hours later Marvel came to the rescue by not only sending Anthony a Hawkeye comic, showing him that at least one of their...

After the first screening of the restored Napoleon, Abel Gance’s beleaguered 1927 masterwork, at the Empire Leicester Square, London, on November 30th, 1980, the director of the British Film Institute Anthony Smith was quoted as saying “After Sunday the world will be divided into those who have seen Napoleon and those who haven’t.” The world of the haves over the have-nots expanded to the Us the following year when Francis Ford Coppola famously brought Napoleon to Radio City Music Hall to be performed with his father’s score, but in the intervening three decades the film has not been seen again in the Us. Come March 24th, however, thanks to the San Francisco Silent Film Festival, the world will once again be divided between those who have and those who haven’t when the film returns to the Us for four screenings of Kevin Brownlow’s complete restoration—accompanied by...

Protests from all over the world have followed the arrest in Manila last week of Lino Brocka, the Filipino film director, on charges of suspected sedition. Brocka has been a thorn in the flesh of the regime for many years as a film-maker often at odds with the censor, and as an open opponent of President Marcos.
Last year, his film Bayan Ko was in competition at Cannes, where Brocka made an outspoken attack on the regime which had refused to pass it for home consumption. Later in the year it came to the London Festival, where the film won the British Film Institute's annual award for the most original and imaginative production shown at the National Film Theatre.

David Cronenberg, Ralph Fiennes to Become BFI Fellows. [Right: Bette Davis.] The list of those who have received a British Film Institute Fellowship since it was first handed out in 1983 is quite extensive. [See below.] BFI Fellows include not only Britishers, but also numerous foreigners who have somehow or other been associated with either the film world or the BFI itself, among them directors (Michelangelo Antonioni, Marcel Carné), producers (John Brabourne, David Puttnam), film executives (Harvey Weinstein, Sidney Bernstein), editors (Thelma Schoonmaker), cinematographers (Jack Cardiff), actors (from Alec Guinness to Bette Davis, from Jean Simmons to Isabelle Huppert), writers (Graham Greene), critics (Dilys Powell), and philanthropists (J. Paul Getty). There are a number of puzzling omissions, however. For instance, the following are a few British actresses who have left an indelible mark on world cinema: Anna Neagle (left out perhaps because she died in 1986), Margaret Lockwood, Julie Andrews, Julie Christie, Lynn Redgrave, and Greer Garson.

One of the most famous voices in hip-hop celebrates a birthday today, as Tone Loc (born Anthony Smith) turns 45 years old today. Though he hasn't released an album since 1991 (that would be Cool Hand Loc, his second and final collection), Loc remains a staple of classic hop-hop conversations thanks to "Wild Thing" (which featured an uncredited sample of the guitar riff from Van Halen's "Jamie's Cryin'") and "Funky Cold Medina."
Loc grew up in Los Angeles and found a friend and collaborator in Young Mc (who co-wrote both of Loc's big hits). The popularity of "Wild Thing" was a cultural event when it hit it big in 1988 (it peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100), as it was a key song that bridged the gap between rock and hip-hop. It also introduced the world to Loc's exquisite voice, which is a sweet, easy-going rasp of an instrument. But though his music lives on,...

As the Society noms continue to roll in, the latest comes from the Visual Effects Society as they announce their nominees for the 7th Annual Ves Awards, a ceremony recognizing outstanding visual effects in over a dozen categories of film, animation, television, commercials and video games. Of course all I really care about are the film noms, but you can check out the full list of nominees by downloading the Pdf press release right here. Iron Man led the way with five nominations and is competing with The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Hellboy II: The Golden Army and Cloverfield in the Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects Driven Motion Picture category, the category probably deemed the highest profile of the bunch and it went to Transformers last year only to see The Golden Compass pull out a surprise win at the Oscars.
