He dreamed of a world powered by free energy and wireless networks, but his eccentric ideas, disregard for money and dwindling reputation lead to his downfall and obscurity.

Director John Frankenheimer.
I'm often asked which, out of the over 600 interviews I've logged with Hollywood's finest, is my favorite. It's not a tough answer: John Frankenheimer.
We instantly clicked the day we met at his home in Benedict Canyon, and spent most of the afternoon talking in his den. A friendship of sorts developed over the years, with visits to his office for screenings of the old Kinescopes he directed for shows like "Playhouse 90" during his salad days in live television during the 1950s.
We hadn't spoken for nearly a year in mid-2002 when the phone rang. It was John, who spoke in what can only be described as a "stentorian bark," like a general. "Alex!" he exclaimed. "John Frankenheimer." He could sense something was amiss with me. It was. My screenwriting career had stalled. My marriage was progressing to divorce. I had hit bottom. John knew that...

HT2FF – Hamptons Take 2 Documentary Film Festival is about to take place for its 7th edition, December 4th, 5th, 6th and 7th just after Thanksgiving and before Christmas. For four days the Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor on Long Island’s East End, is booked back-to-back with documentaries of the finest caliber but which are not necessarily premieres. These are films that both deserve and need exposure, hence the festival title, “Take 2”. The audience is enthusiastic and loyal.
Jacqui Lofaro was herself a documentary filmmaker until she started this festival which now consumes her days and nights. Not that she doesn’t have an idea for her next documentary, but, at this moment the festival, is exploding, a case of spontaneous combustion. The festival has taken over her life with screenings throughout the year, such as this spring’s screening of Frieda Lee Mock’s 2013 critically acclaimed film, “Anita”. With a panel of experts the screening was an event playing to a packed house. It didn’t matter that the film had already had its theatrical release. According to Jacqui “that’s what Take 2 is all about. Our mission is simply to show great documentary films to our local East End audience”. This festival reaches out to the community by showing films throughout the year in local libraries as well.
This year, the festival will screen a total of 32 documentaries at the Bay Street Theater. Using only one theater venue makes this festival intimate and very, very easy.
There is a balance in the festival between social issue documentaries and other docs, and between bringing in filmmakers and focusing on community filmmakers. Indeed the first day of the festival is devoted to regional filmmakers with a “Focus on Locals”.
In addition, the festival will feature several sections which are targeted at local youth: Young Voices (short docs made by local middle and high school students), Future Voices (films by Student Filmmakers from the NYC Media Arts Centers) and Emerging Voices (two strong films by recent graduates of the School of Visual Arts Mfa Social Documentary Program, introduced by documentary filmmaker and Sva professor, Deborah Dickson).
The Evening Galas are not red-carpet-celebrity events. Rather they honor documentary filmmakers such as Richard Leacock the inventor of the sound-sync camera or Susan Lacy of American Masters or Chris Hegedus & D A Pennebaker. This year the honors go to Barbara Kopple who has been making ground-breaking docs for 40+ years. Her first film on a devastating coal miners’ strike in Kentucky, “Harlan County USA”, was an Oscar winner, and will screen to this growing audience of doc fans.
This rock-solid festival is not premiere driven. However, this year the festival was offered the New York premiere of Michael Apted’s “Bending the Light” about lens making for photographers and filmmakers, and will also feature the east coast premiere of “The Big Beat”, made by local filmmaker and archivist, Joe Lauro. Also screening is Martin Scorsese’s “Fifty Year Argument”, an HBO documentary about the anniversary of The New York Review of Books.
The closing night film is reserved for the annual Filmmaker’s Choice Award which this year goes to Wendy Keys both filmmaker and former administrator at the Film Society of Lincoln Center. Her documentary “Milton Glaser: To Inform & Delight, “ a warm and insightful view of the iconic American graphic designer of the “I Love New York” campaign and the founder of New York Magazine, will be the feature film.
The enthusiasm and efficiency behind this festival abide with Jacqui to such an extent that I wondered how she did it and wondered about her own docs, made by her company Justice Productions.org. She said they do not have traditional distribution, however, they continuously sell on Amazon’s Create Space, and she is invited to speak and show the film at universities, libraries and other venues where audiences care about social issues. Recently the Reel Recovery Film Festival showed “The Last Fix: An Addicts Passage from Hell to Hope” at the Quad. “The Empty Chair: Death Penalty Yes or No,” the recipient of the 2006 prestigious Thurgood Marshall Broadcast Journalism Award aired on national television on the Hallmark Channel’s World of Faith and Values and is still actively requested as well.
The festival has welcomed Karen Arikian (former Exec. Dir of the Hamptons International Film Festival and currently the Us rep for the Berlin International Film Festival) on board as Creative Advisor, and Jacqui has put together an Industry Advisory Board of top film and television professionals. Jacqui describes board meetings at the Paley Center for Media (Board Member, Ron Simon, is Paley’s Curator for TV and Radio) taking place in the Chairman’s office around Paley’s own round leather desk. As Jacqui puts it: “Now that’s a place of inspiration”.
Industry Advisory Board:
Julie Anderson - Executive Producer, Documentaries and Development at PBS/Wnet; former producer at Espn; documentary filmmaker at HBO Sports; executive at HBO Original Documentary Programming.
Karen Arikian - Founded her independent consulting company with offices in Germany and New York for clients including BAFTA, Toronto International Film Festival, Hamburg Media School; Us Delegate to (Berlinale) Berlin International Film Festival.
Susan Lacy - Founded "Pentimento Productions" in 2014, with a film to premiere on HBO, the first in an exclusive multi-picture deal with HBO Documentary Films; former creator, director & executive producer of 200 documentaries for the PBS “American Masters” series.
Don Lenzer - Documentary director and cinematographer whose credits can be found on five Academy Award winning feature documentaries and numerous public television programs; co-directed and shot the Emmy Award winning Great Performances documentary "Itzhak Perlman; In The Fiddler's House."
Susan Margolin - President of Docurama and Special Acquisitions at Cinedigm. She oversees the recently launched Docurama Channel as well as the Docurama brand of award winning documentary films across all platforms including theatrical, home entertainment, and digital distribution.
Nigel Noble - Producer, director and Academy Award winner for the documentary short, “Close Harmony;" producer and director of films and video for theaters, television, not-for-profits, major businesses with works earning nominations and accolades from the Director’s Guild of America, Cannes Film Festival, Telluride Film Festival.
Roger Sherman - Director, producer and cinematographer of documentaries that have won an Emmy Award, a Peabody Award and two Academy award nominations. He is a co-founder of Florentine Films with Ken Burns.
Ron Simon - Curator of television and radio for The Paley Center for Media; an adjunct associate professor at Columbia University, New York University and Hunter College; judge on the George Foster Peabody committee; member editorial board of Television Quarterly.

The 73rd George Foster Peabody Awards on Monday presented 46 statues (of more than 1,100 submissions) to TV, radio and in one case a viral video -- the most yet for the annual awards administered by the University of Georgia's Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications. At three-plus hours, the annual luncheon at Manhattan's Waldorf Astoria Hotel may have been long, but it was loaded with content as the awards were bestowed for programming that illuminated issues of race (NPR's The Race Card, PBS' Latino's in America), class (NBC News' In Plain Sight: Poverty in America, Jenji Kohan's

The list of Peabody Award winners was announced today, and it was as expansive as ever. Netflix took home awards for "House of Cards" and "Orange is the New Black" after being shut out last year, while "Breaking Bad" took home an award for AMC in its last season of eligibility. Comedy Central's "Key & Peele" added to its accolades as well, as did BBC America's cult hit "Orphan Black" and its soon-to-be-adapted-for-America "Broadchurch." Among scripted series, the only major network show to take home a Peabody was ABC for "Scandal." NBC and CBS' news departments were rewarded. The George Foster Peabody Awards are handed out by the University of Georgia for excellence and service by broadcasters, cable and webcasters. Perhaps the only show designated this year in which "excellence" would be called into question, at least by this writer, would be FX's "The Bridge" -- though the choice...

The list of Peabody Award winners for 2013 was announced today prior to the formal ceremony scheduled to take place on May 19th. The large list, 46 winners in total this year, is highlighted by shows such as "Orange is the new Black," "Scandal," "House of Cards," "Breaking Bad," and "Orphan Black." Named after George Foster Peabody, the awards are the oldest in broadcasting and designed to recognize excellence across that spectrum. There are no categories for the Peabody Awards and no set number of winners – the judges simply decide whether a submission is deserving or not. Winning requires a unanimous vote from the 16 member board. Consequently, this year has 46 winners whereas last year there were 39. Ira Glass, who is also hosting the ceremony in May, made the announcement about the recipients on CBS's early show, "CBS This Morning," along with Charlayne Hunter-Gault, a Peabody board member. Glass's program, "This American Life,...

Pivot's made a multi-year alliance with the Peabodys that will begin this year and go through 2016. This year's honorees will be announced April 2. For the first time in a decade, the Peabody Awards has a TV home. Pivot, Participant Media’s TV network targeting millennials, has signed a deal to telecast the University of Georgia’s George Foster Peabody Awards through 2016, which marks the Peabody’s 75th anniversary. Broadcasting the awards, which honor excellence in TV, radio and webcasting, is challenging since winners traditionally are announced well in advance of the trophy ceremony. This year’s winners, for instance, will be announced April 2, but the medallions will be dispensed May 19 at a luncheon ceremony at New York City’s Waldorf Astoria. The 2014 Peabody Awards special, the two parties announced, will “blend highlights from the presentation ceremony with exclusive interviews with featured award winners. “We didn’t get mad, we got smart,” HBO CEO Michael Fuchs said about hitting The Wall, looking back at HBO stalling in 1984 from the vantage of the early 1990s. Actually, a lot of the rank and file didn’t get mad or smart; we’d seen 125 of our friends and colleagues get shown the door when the company had suddenly flatlined after eight years of phenomenal growth, and what we got was scared.
But it’s to the credit of HBO’s execs that whatever anxieties they may have had, they showed no panic or even nervousness in public. Instead, they poured any concerns into energetically and immediately addressing the question of, “What do we do now?” The world we knew had changed and there was no going back to the Gold Rush days of the late 1970s and early 1980s. The company required a humongous...

According to The Hollywood reporter, Roberts took the stage to accept the accolade and explained it had been "eight months to the day since [her] transplant," which resulted in a standing o from the entire crowd.
As previously reported by GossipCenter, Robin was diagnosed with bone marrow disease back in June of 2012 before undergoing surgery in September.
The 52-year-old television personality, who is also a breast cancer survivor, made a triumphant return to "Gma" exactly five months after her surgery date.

Patrick Stewart will host the Peabody Awards: "Tony Award nominee Patrick Stewart will host the 71st annual George Foster Peabody Awards ceremony May 21 at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City. 'Patrick Stewart, the first actor to host the Peabody Awards Presentation Luncheon, brings a career that perfectly illustrates the breadth of the Peabody Award,' said Horace Newcomb, director of the Peabody Awards at the University of Georgia, in a statement. The Peabody recognizes excellence in journalism and news, documentary and public service, and in all forms of entertainment in electronic media." Playbill Jon Hamm doesn't understand why Don Draper is so popular: "Your classic TV hero, 1960s ad agency rainmaker Don Draper is not. He cheated on his wife as casually as squirrels pluck acorns. He’s an identity thief. He lies to friends and can verbally backhand colleagues trying desperately to please him. But he’s hardly a villain,...

The former speaker's top aides bolted en masse Thursday, leaving his campaign in tatters. Peter J. Boyer on staffers' complaints about Gingrich's rogue inclinations, the Greek cruise with wife Callista that was the final straw-and whether the candidate has any chance of recovering.
Newt Gingrich's troubled campaign for the Republican presidential nomination finally imploded Thursday when the core of his political team, vexed by the candidate's own erratic performance, quit en masse. The decisive moment came in a meeting at Gingrich's Washington, D.C. office between the candidate and his top two operatives, campaign manager Rob Johnson and strategist Sam Dawson, who had hoped to convince Gingrich that his approach as a candidate-which one insider described as "appalling" -needed a drastic transformation. When Gingrich did not agree, Johnson and Dawson said they were done.

Conservatives longing for a 2012 savior are increasingly fixating on Texas' governor. Peter Boyer talks to Perry about his suitors, his state's economic success-and his timetable for deciding.
One of the photographs that Texas Gov. Rick Perry keeps on his BlackBerry is a portrait of Aurora P. ( "Rory" ) Perry, the family's black Labrador Retriever, who last year acquired a key role in local Perry legend. The governor and the dog were out for an early morning jog when a coyote suddenly appeared, growling at Rory. Perry, who carries a Ruger .380 handgun in his belt when he jogs, pulled the weapon and shot the coyote dead. When some Austin locals protested that Perry's reaction was excessive, and dangerous, he shrugged it off. "Don't attack my dog," he said, "or you might get shot."

Beyond the buzz over the delays, Gabrielle Giffords, and President Obama, Endeavour's launch Monday signifies the setting of the 30-year-old shuttle program-ceding U.S. space preeminence to the Russians. Peter J. Boyer reports.
As a presidential candidate, Barack Obama once remarked that America's space program had become so uninspiring the space shuttle missions scarcely qualified as news. He could not have foreseen the drama attending the twice-delayed launch of the shuttle Endeavour. As many as half a million people crowded the beach roads and byways around Cape Canaveral to watch the stubby space plane push through the morning sky, an awesome spectacle of rocket power, before disappearing into orbit for its rendezvous with the International Space Station.

In reporting my Newsweek cover story on Gabrielle Giffords' recovery from a gunshot wound to the head, I learned from her doctors that insurance coverage for treatment of brain trauma injuries is spotty and unpredictable. One key therapy is not offered to troops, a glaring deficiency in military health care that investigative outlet Pro Publica has been persistently exposing for months. Now Rep. Giffords' office is making the case for brain trauma rehab to be included in the health-reform law, setting up the possibility that Giffords' injury-already a human interest story-could become a political one as well.
The life-saving medical treatment that Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords received in the critical first hours after being shot in the head occurred in a trauma unit headed by a former combat surgeon, Dr. Peter Rhee, whose approach was shaped on the battlefields of Iraq and Afghanistan. The crime scene had been, in essence, a combat zone,...
