There's a scene early on in Brotherhood, the concluding chapter in Noel Clarke's British Hood trilogy, in which his Sam Peel checks himself out in a changing room mirror after a rigorous gym session. He ends up sadly patting his emerging belly and you realise that whatever his original intentions for this series, Sam has become his Rocky Balboa.
Having played the antagonist in 2006's Kidulthood and then switched gears in the hit 2008 sequel Adulthood to show the difficulties of that character's life after being released from prison, Brotherhood ties up a lot of loose ends but also rediscovers Sam a little further down the line, much like Sylvester Stallone brought back his most iconic character in Rocky Balboa or Creed. Sam the character has nothing like the innate sympathy that the Italian Stallion evokes, but the connecting tissue in all...

Film directors and their crew discuss the techniques and approaches to capturing fruitiness on the big (and small) screen...
John Badham has written a couple of excellent books where he passed on advice about directing movies, and the lessons he's learned across his own career. In the latest, John Badham On Directing, he raises the spectre of filming sex scenes, and the problems that ensue.
Actors get really spooked when it comes to intimacy in a scene, even kissing", he wrote. "This is where the director has to be extremely patient with the actors and know that the emotional or intimate part of scenes don’t always shoot as easily as the production department thinks they should. The actors are not robots on a Toyota assembly line".
But just how do different filmmakers approach putting intimacy on film? In lots of different ways, is the answer...

Something like a Shakespearean comedy, full of highly amusing, sharply drawn characters and offering wicked insight into how identity is shaped by city living and immigrant culture clash. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing

There is no denying the poignant, uplifting message behind Destiny Ekaragha’s comedy Gone Too Far! as a film that certainly has a lot of heart behind it, but, regrettably, falls flat with a lacklustre screenplay. The way our characters question their own identity and culture and almost seem embarrassed by their roots makes for an intriguing narrative, but it’s one that simply hasn’t been executed well enough.
Malachi Kirby plays Yemi, a youngster who desperately wants to attract the attention of Armani (Shanika Warren-Markland), despite the fact she’s only leading him on to pettily get back at her ex-boyfriend Razer (Tosin Cole). Yemi’s chances take an even bigger blow when his estranged brother Iku (O.C. Ukeje) comes to London from Nigeria, and he’s left with the responsibility on showing him around the city, despite feeling ashamed of his native sensibilities. However their simple trip...

The BFI Film Fund is set to back a film adaptation of Bola Adbaje's coming-of-age comedy stage play "Gone Too Far" says The Hollywood Reporter.
The story follows two estranged teenage brothers over the course of a single day as they meet for the first time, and struggle to accept each other for who they are.
Destiny Ekaragha helms the project, while Agbaje has adapted the screenplay from her own Laurence Olivier Award-winning play.
Malachi Kirby, O.C. Ukeje, Shanika Warren-Markland, Adelayo Adedayo and Golda John star while Christopher Granier-Deferre will produce. A month-long shoot takes place on location in East and South London later this month.

Victim
Stars: Ashley Chin, Ashley Madekwe, Jason Maza, Anna Nightingale, Michael Maris, Letitia Wright, Shanika Warren-Markland, Natasha Sparkes, David Harewood | Written by Ashley Chin, Michael Kyei, Michael Maris, Adrian Scott | Directed by Alex Pillai
It’s quite strange watching Victim after recently viewing GBH because that was a British film that escaped the trappings of being a normal “urban” drama that is almost drowning the industry right now. You expect Victim to be very “urban”, giving an impression it’s about a life of crime, gangs and a typical almost cliché view of “life in London” which is almost threatening to be over used, but surprisingly it’s a film that pulls you into the security of thinking yes; it’s just another one of those typical “urban” films then blows that misinterpretation away.

In celebration of Pride Week, five gay friends and recent Brown graduates meet up in New York, catalysing one sexy, dynamic reunion. The Skinny, a dramedy by Logo favorite Patrik-Ian Polk (Punks, Noah’s Arc) explores many aspects of the Lgbtq community, including promiscuity, monogamy, drugs and HIV–and especially focuses on the issues faced by different races in the gay community, a topic not explored nearly enough in film and TV.
Polk’s coming-of-age tale earned him a “Fusion Achievement Award” (which acknowledges people of color in Lgbtq film) at the 2012 Outfest Fusion, and stars Jussie Smolett (The Mighty Ducks, North), Blake Young-Fountain, Anthony Burrell, Shanika Warren-Markland and Jeffry Bowyer-Chapman. Other actors include Darryl Stephens (Noah’s Arc), Jennia Fredrique (Noah’s Arc), Wilson Cruz (Noah’s Arc), Seth Gilliam (Punks), newcomer Dustin Ross and internet sensation B. Scott.

Alex Pillai's urban melodrama has energy, despite the EastEnders-ish moments
Alex Pillai's urban melodrama Victim has a bizarre and overwrought ending and a few EastEnders-ish moments. But there's some energy there. Ashley Madekwe plays innocent Tia, who comes to London to study, staying with her tough cousin; this is Charmaine (Shanika Warren-Markland) who seems to be living the high life, partying and hanging out with male friends including Tyson (Ashley Chin). The awful truth is that Charmaine and her mates are running a honey-trap scam: they seduce drunken City types in clubs, go back with them to their expensive flats, then Tyson and his crew move in, beat them up and steal everything. Inevitably, a romance develops between Tia and Tyson. It doesn't quite come together, yet there's some rough'n'ready force.

New British Horror film Demons Never Die is the directorial debut of Arjun Rose and opens in the UK today.
We spoke to Rose and some of the cast at the HeyUGuys/Who’s Jack night during the London Film Festival and there was a clear sense of pride in what they had achieved as well as an infectious enthusiasm for the film.
Earlier this week I spent a lovely evening catching up with Arjun Rose at the Swanky Soho House and discussed how it feels to have directed his first film, the actors involved and his future aspirations.
Movie Synopsis:
Stylish teen slasher film Demons Never Die follows eight very different London students with one deadly secret: they have all made a pact to end their lives together. However, a mysterious masked killer emerges from the shadows to grant their death-wish in more terrifying fashion than they could ever have imagined.

Last night was the first ever HeyUGuys event and it went off with a bang! We teamed together with the amazing people from Who’s Jack Magazine to bring you a Q&A with the cast and filmmakers from brand new British horror / slasher movie, Demons Never Die at the Jameson Apartment in Soho which is in place for the duration of the London Film Festival.
Jon did a fantastic job anchoring the Q&A session which was attended by Director, Arjun Rose, Producer Rhian Williams from Exile and cast members, Jason Maza (who also produced), Shanika Warren-Markland and Andrew Ellis. The film was shot in just 18 days and from the trailer, it looks like a slick, gritty and we can’t wait to see the finished article when it’s released October 28th.
Arjun spoke about how John Carpenter movies and the Scream franchise affected his writing of Demons Never Die...

The film was shot in just 18 days and from the trailer, it looks like a slick, gritty and we can’t wait to see the finished article when it’s released October 28th.

Sex, murder, accents… That pretty much sums up Demons Never Die, a UK film directed by Arjun Rose and produced by Idris Elba (The Wire, 28 Weeks Later).
A sort of Scream meets Clue meets the United Kingdom, Demons Never Die wrangles together an impressive ensemble cast of UK actors, including British Independent Film Award winner Ashley Walters, Tulisa Contostavlos, Robert Sheehan, Andrew Ellis, Arnold Oceng, Jacob Anderson, Reggie Yates, Emma Rigby, Femi Oyineran, Jack Doolon, Peter Baladi, Jason Maza, Jennie Jacques, and Shanika Warren-Markland.

Okay, so let me get this straight. Actor Idris Elba, who you'll know if you watched HBO's The Wire, is producing a teen thriller called Suicide Kids about a group of kids who decide to form a suicide pact and then realize that they are Also getting murdered by a serial killer which gives them the will to live. What? I mean, I know I have to see the flick to know how it all plays out, but two things jump out at me on this one. First, if they were already planning to kill themselves then who cares if killer does the job instead? And second, what are the chances? But if Elba is involved I'll give it the benefit of the doubt.
Synopsis:
When a young girl [Amber] takes her own life, her friend Archie Eden and seven other London teenagers decide to follow her lead and create a suicide pact.

Exile Media Group is producing a new urban thriller titled Suicide Kids. Recently, the first teaser became available and the tagline offers: "find a reason to live." The characters in the film will find their own reasons at the end of knife, as an anonymous serial killer breaks up a suicide pact with a swift slice and dice. But, this is not Gordon Ramsay's Hell's Kitchen and the first clip, while obtuse, shows one character preparing for butchery. All the details on Suicide Kids are inside.
The synopsis for Suicide Kids is here:
"When a young girl [Amber] takes her own life, her friend Archie Eden and seven other London teenagers decide to follow her lead and create a suicide pact. As the group begins to die one by one, Archie realises they have become the target of a masked killer. The suicide kids decide that life is too valuable to throw away.

Noel Clarke is best known in the sci-fi realm for his role as Rose's boyfriend Mickey Smith in TV's Doctor Who. But there's much more to him than that.
He's also a writer and director who won Bafta's Orange Rising Star Award last year following critical acclaim for Kidulthood and Adulthood, two films he wrote, starred in, and, in the latter case, directed.
Noel (pictured right), 34, first came to prominence for his work in Richard Wilson's theatre production of Where Do We Live for which he won Most Promising Performer at the 2003 Olivier Awards. As well as Doctor Who, he's since appeared in films such as Sex & Drugs & Rock & Roll and Centurion.

Noel Clarke steps into the director’s chair for the second time with 4.3.2.1, a fast and furious ensemble movie with plenty to enjoy…
Following the Twitter feed of Noel Clarke, the writer and co-director of 4.3.2.1, we were surprised to see him express his displeasure regarding a Q&A he did at the BFI a few weeks back. Our surprise wasn't aimed at him, though, rather the audience that turned up to question him, whom he described as 99% uninterested in what he had to say.
That's odd. Because, and 4.3.2.1 offers ample of proof of this, if you're a young filmmaker looking to make movies in the UK, Noel Clarke is absolutely one of the people you should be hunting down to talk to.
His new movie is precisely the kind of film that you wouldn't expect the British film industry to churn out. It's got more of the soul and beats of an American independent film,...

4.3.2.1 is the latest film from Noel Clarke, whose career has been a runaway success these past few years. Last year Clarke was the winner of the Orange Rising Star award following a host of acting roles and also his work on Kidulthood (which he wrote) and Adulthood (which he wrote and directed) and 4.3.2.1 sees Clarke co-directing, writing and starring.
The tagline line to 4.3.2.1 is “4 Girls, 3 Days, 2 Cities, 1 Chance” and the four ‘girls’ in question are Jo (Emma Roberts), Cassandra (Tasmin Egerton), Kerrys (Shanika Warren-Markland) and Shannon (Ophelia Lovibond). Using a muddled structure Clarke focuses on these four girls individually over three days, essentially restarting the film three times in order to tell each one of their stories. There are obviously many overlaps and the overarching plot surrounds a bag of diamonds, the result of a high profile heist, that end up in the girl’s possession.
Along the way there are sub-plots involving internet boyfriends,...

Noel "Adulthood" Clarke tries his hand at a transatlantic comedy thriller with four female stars, but the result is a chaotic mess, says Peter Bradshaw
Noel Clarke writes and co-directs this ambitious but completely chaotic urban comedy-thriller, set in London and New York, about four young women with attitude. They are friends whose lives are upended when they come into contact with dangerous individuals who have stolen a bagful of "conflict diamonds". Clarke himself appears in a smallish role as a supermarket employee, and is described by one of the attractive young women in the cast as kind of sexy and probably very well endowed. Well, if you can't big yourself up in your own movie, when can you? Emma Roberts plays Joanne, a lonely American in the UK, Tamsin Egerton is Cassandra, a talented classical pianist about to get a big break in the Big Apple, Ophelia Lovibond is Shannon,...
