Last week, Carnegie Hall resonated with the spirit and songs of Sinéad O'Connor and Shane MacGowan as an expanded lineup of luminaries took to the stage for a historic tribute concert.

Amigo the Devil is prepping for the release of his new album, Yours Until the War Is Over, arriving February 23rd. In advance of the LP, the dark-folk troubadour has unveiled a new song, albeit in an unconventional manner.
Following the official release of the singles “Cannibal Within” and “The Mechanic,” the singer-guitarist also known as Danny Kiranos has leaked another new tune, “Once Upon a Time at Texaco (Pt. 1).” Although it was posted unlisted on YouTube a few days ago, many fans discovered the new track via a voicemail at the phone number (458) 867-1239.
That phone number came from a wild and wacky late-night TV commercial promoting “The Mechanic” that Amigo hoped to get aired on MTV and Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim block. Unfortunately, the ad got resoundingly rejected for being “too violent.”

Shane MacGowan’s passing has led to an outpouring of tributes from fellow musicians.
“Every time I heard him sing I heard the truth, and my heart filled up with humanity,” wrote Flea of Red Hot Chili Peppers. He proceeded to share an anecdote about the time he met the Pogues singer: “I once saw him sing with the Pogues at a festival in the late 80’s. It was so beautiful and I was reduced to tears. I approached him, and gushed “Man that was so beautiful, thank you etc…” He looked at me and burst into laughter, accidentally spitting beer in my face, and it was not thoughtless or mean at all, he was just so humble and being a dude singing it seemed absurd to him to be elevated, like I was doing to him. I have never been a church going man or a religious man, but if I ever felt baptised,...

Josh Humiston, a music agent and partner at Agency for the Performing Arts, died Wednesday after a stroke, the agency said. He was 48.
APA said Humiston was the first agent in its 59-year history to rise from the mailroom to partner. His clients have included Dionne Warwick, Smokey Robinson, Judas Priest, X, Andrew McMahon in the Wilderness, Flogging Molly and Everclear.
“All of us are devastated for the loss of our dear friend, colleague and partner, Josh Humiston,” APA CEO Jim Gosnell said. “Josh was a unique and exceptional agent who was fiercely passionate and loyal to his clients and this company for 26 years. A much-loved member of our APA family, he wore his heart on his sleeve and would fight equally as hard for his clients as he did his colleagues. He will be extremely missed by all of us, as well as the music community in which he served.

The Walker Roaders — the supergroup featuring ex-members of the Pogues, Flogging Molly, and Dropkick Murphys — have released a new cover of Howlin’ Wolf’s “Smokestack Lightning.”
The cover finds the Walker Roaders using a banjo to deliver the song’s iconic blues riff, while later bits of acoustic guitar and accordion float over the clattering percussion. The track arrives with a music video that blends archival footage — including some of Howlin’ Wolf — with shots of frontman James Fearnley singing “Smokestack Lightning” in his resonant baritone.

It’s obscenely rare for a punk band to have the kind of sustained success that Green Day has enjoyed over the last 25 years. Granted, it could be argued that Green Day was only really punk for a hot minute before morphing into some variation of power pop or alternative rock…but that’s really just semantics, isn’t it?
They’ve produced 11 full-length albums in that time, and had a bonkers amount of success in the singles market. (They have enough hits for at least a double album by now.) They’re in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, have influenced a staggering number of bands in and out of the punk community, and even have their own Rock Band game. (That may not sound like much, but the only other band to be given their own version was The Beatles).

St. Patrick's Day falls on a Tuesday this year, which means some of the major celebrations of the holiday took place over the weekend. For the Windy City, that meant Saturday was the day that the Chicago River went green, an annual tradition that dates back to 1962. The dyeing takes about five hours and involves 40 lbs. of powdered green vegetable dye going overboard from a boat as it navigates the river. (The video is soundtracked - as virtually all St. Paddy's day-themed videos must be - to an old Irish fiddle tune called the "Kesh Jig" - you may recognize...

Defiance, Season 1: Episodes 9, 10 and 11 – “I Just Wasn’t Made for These Times,” “If I Ever Leave This World Alive” and “The Bride Wore Black”
Directed by Allan Kroeker (9 and 10) and Todd Slavkin (11)
Written by Clark Perry (9), Bryan Garcia (10) and Todd Slavkin and Darren Swimmer (11)
Airs Monday nights at 9 on SyFy
Apologies for major technical issues on my end that made me fall behind on these reviews. Coming back to watch and write about three episodes of Defiance as one unit, though, was a really interesting exercise. As this debut season has gone along, it has felt like Defiance episodes work perfectly fine in their own right as self-contained stories but that they lack that substance that lends itself to more meaningful examination or criticism. When I’ve addressed this in the past, I’ve pointed my finger at the fact that the show is more concerned with world-building than...

Manchester, Tennessee — In a two-hour set that absolutely flew by, the Red Hot Chili Peppers proved Saturday night that they're still the hardest-working band in the business. Their incomparable energy was on full display in their first Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival appearance as they tore through their nearly 30-year catalogue.
A little more than two months into a tour schedule that has them performing nonstop through the end of November, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees opened with "Monarchy of Roses," the first track on their most-recent release, I'm With You. "Factory of Faith" and "The Adventures of Rain Dance Maggie" also represented that disc.

While Miley Cyrus isn't the first person to come to mind when making a wishlist of artists to cover Bob Dylan songs, we have to admit -- we're really looking forward to this album.
Miley and a host of her contemporaries have joined forces to pay tribute to both Bob Dylan and Amnesty International with a new cover album. The record, titled "Chimes of Freedom," features a huge variety of artists -- from Pete Seeger to Ke$ha.
"Glee" star Darren Criss even makes a contribution to the four-disc compilation, covering New Morning with his brother, Chuck Criss, and his band the Freelance Whales. The jam-packed album, which "salutes Amnesty International's 50th anniversary and life-saving human rights work," is set for a January 24 release. Check out the list of songs and artists below to see which classic your favorite singer will be covering.

So, folks…I’ve been pretty lazy in my necessary duties as a staffer at the Liberal Dead. I don’t really pull my weight and even though I’m not doing this for pay or anything like that, I do feel consequences whenever I don’t pitch in. And it’s not because of my editors or anything—no, every single person at Liberal Dead is a great person who understands that I’m a busy man. I still feel like I have an obligation, however, to present my corner of weirdo horror cinema to you, the reader. As a result, it’s time for me to make it up to you. Simple sex won’t suffice. We’re going straight-out clusterfuck on this one. I present unto you as many reviews as I can do in one weekend, in one big, snappy package. I hope it’s enough.

What a difference a week — and a price higher than 99 cents — makes. While Lady Gaga will hold on to the #1 spot on the Billboard 200 albums chart this week, sales for Born This Way were down a whopping 84 percent in its second go-round, according to figures provided by Nielsen SoundScan, plummeting from more than 1.1 million to just over 174,000. That put Mother Monster within sight of the 1.3 million mark, while the unstoppable Adele held the #2 spot with 21, which moved another 121,000 to push over the 2 million mark.
There are plenty of other new faces in the top 10, with Death Cab for Cutie crashing in at #3 with Codes and Keys (102,000), Eddie Vedder just behind with his sedate solo effort Ukulele Songs (71,000) and Kentucky rockers My Morning Jacket notching their...

In which case Tuesday (June 7) morning was either a huge relief or a major bummer if you're planning on trekking to Chicago on August 5 for Lollapalooza. First, the good news: With the exception of a few headliner conflicts, the schedule is actually one of the most fan-friendly rundown in years.
Yes, Muse and Coldplay are playing at the same time on Friday night, which will probably cause major headaches for thousands of fans of falsetto-driven, pomp and circumstance English rock. (To say nothing of the fact that party...

Last night one of you lovely readers out there caught a proofreading mistake I'd made in the column and pointed it out. Now, it's not unusual that I make slight spelling or grammar mistakes so I want all of you to know that please, feel free to let me know if you catch one. You can mention it in the comments or email me because I'm terrible at proofreading things I've written and am happy to fix them if they're really irking you. Most of the time. I've found that some of my spelling mistakes end up making things more amusing for all of us so some of them I just leave alone even if I know they're there. So, with that said, here's your Monday night TV:
8:00pm: "The Bachelorette" on ABC
"Basketball Wives" on VH1
"Last Man Standing" on Lifetime. Original Telefilm.
"Mastercheif" on Fox. Second season premiere.

It’s a rock bonanza this week with new releases from Death Cab for Cutie, My Morning Jacket, Flogging Molly, Eddie Vedder and Dave Matthews Band on May 31. Then, of course, New Kids on the Block’s Jordan Knight is sure to make all the ladies scream. Are any of the titles likely to dislodge Lady Gaga’s “Born This Way” from the No. 1 spot? No, but they should log some strong numbers. Kate Bush, “Director’s Cut” (Fish People/Emi): British singing icon revamps 11 songs from 1989’s “The Sensual World” and 1993’s “The Red Shoes" on this new effort. Death Cab for...

It's that time of year again: Lollapalooza.
After months of rumors and line-up "leaks," the official Lollapalooza 2011 line-up has been announced... and it's good. There are six headlining acts, including Eminem, Muse, Coldplay and Foo Fighters. Lollapalooza takes place from Aug. 5 -7, in Chicago, Illinois.
Other acts include My Morning Jacket, Cee Lo Green, Bright Eyes, Flogging Molly, Lykke Li, Cage the Elephant, Arctic Monkeys, The Kills, Ok Go, Grace Potter, The Naked and Famous and many, many more.
There are a few interesting acts included on the line-up, including "Gossip Girl" actress Taylor Momsen's band The Pretty Reckless and former Fall Out Boy frontman Patrick Stump.
Hm... Coldplay and Cee Lo Green? Could Gwyneth Paltrow make a surprise appearance? We wouldn't put it past the "Glee" guest star at this point. To buy tickets and check out the rest of the acts performing, visit the official Lollapalooza website here.

Indio, California — Despite finding message-board haters among some festival vets for snagging a headlining spot at the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, Kings of Leon won over the first-day crowd on Friday night, as the masses in attendance couldn't help but sing and sway to the band's radio-friendly rock.
Saying they were "tired of playing the new stuff," the Kings dug out "Molly's Chambers" from their pre-big-time 2003 debut Ep, Holy Roller Novocaine, which joined more-recent hits "On Call," "Sex on Fire" and "Use Somebody."
The rockers' Who-reminiscent "Black Thumbnail" finale of feedback and drum pummeling ended not with smashed guitars, but with good-ol'-boy singer Caleb Followill knotting up his handkerchief to toss into the adoring crowd.

The schedule for this weekend's Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival has at last been revealed, and in typical music-fest fashion, it is forcing fans to make heart-wrenching decisions. Anyone that has ventured to a major music festival, especially one of Coachella's magnitude, knows that they will inevitably have to choose between, not one or two, but up to four or five of the newest wave of indie bands and veteran acts playing simultaneously.
Friday is going to be hardest day for the music elitists sweating in the California sun. If you want to check out the latest rap crew the music world is buzzing about, Odd Future, you will have to sacrifice seeing foul-mouthed Cee Lo and art-rock outfit Warpaint. And what would make a wicked indie-rock bill on its own is instead a touch dilemma: Noise-rock duo Sleigh Bells perform at the same time...

Happy St.Patrick's day, everyone! The day of the year when I get more slightly uncomfortable questions about my ethnic make-up than other days. (It's the ginger-ness, it's like a big sign saying "Ask me about my ancestors! Seriously, it's not intrusive or presumptuous at all.") It's also the day when people in the Us like to celebrate "Irish culture" by drinking Guinness, wearing green, consuming corned beef and cabbage if they're really unfortunate, and listening to Flogging Molly and/or Dropkick Murphys. There's at least one St.Paddy's day special on tonight, but mostly there's a lot of basketball which is probably the least Irish sport in the world. Don't mind me, though, I'm just grumpy because I had an early dentist appointment and had to play the "Oh My God you're Like Totally Irish Aren't You?!?" game earlier than I would've liked. I hope you're all enjoying yourselves.

HollywoodNews.com: Weezer has just announced that they have partnered with Cinder Block, the world’s leading independent music merchandiser, to take care of their worldwide merchandising needs. Weezer kicks off its “Memories” tour this month in Los Angeles in support of its latest release, Hurley. In addition to servicing its touring business, Cinder Block will provide the band with its web store, retail distribution and licensing solutions. Weezer’s signing brings the band’s merchandising business back to Cinder Block, where it worked for the better part of the 2000s.
2010 has been a banner year for Cinder Block. In addition to re-signing Weezer, the company has inked deals with several other top tier and emerging acts such as The National, Phoenix, Coheed and Cambria, and Alkaline Trio. Cinder Block is also the official merchandise home for artists and tours like Kid Rock, The Pixies, Flogging Molly, Yeah Yeah Yeahs and the Vans Warped Tour.

This weekend at the Guys' Choice Awards for Spike TV in Los Angeles, history was made. World champion eater and California native Joey Chestnut devoured 40 1/2 slices of pizza in ten minutes to set a new world record in the Pizza Hut Chow-lenge, an official event sanctioned by the International Federation of Competitive Eating, and a return to form after Chestnut's loss at the same event last year. Chestnut beat Pat Bertoletti, the mohawked Chicago kid fond of listening to Flogging Molly on his iPod while competing, who had a respectable 36 1/2 slices of pizza in ten minutes. Both of these gastral gladiators went through five full-size Pizza Hut pies before amazed onlookers, their technique being to crush each slice in their fist into paste, then shove the sauce and dough down their throats. After a three-week run at the top, Sade's Soldier of Love will be replaced at #1 on the Billboard albums chart by the very album she vanquished last month, Lady Antebellum's Need You Now. I’m a huge fan of Rock Band, like so many others. Harmonix studios decided to take the next step of their powerhouse fake band music game by introducing the Rock Band Network to players.
What is it, exactly? MTV Gaming Executive, Paul Degooyer, provides a bit of an explanation:
“The Rock Band Network Music Store gives artists at any level the opportunity to reach new fans through our deeply engaging interactive platform. This new pathway for discovery is a huge win for passionate music fans, as well as an opportunity for artists to promote themselves while positively impacting their bottom line.”
The Rock Band Network allows musicians and their labels to directly pipe new music to gamers through Rock Band – where gamers can disover new artists and expand their taste in music.
More or less, it’s a fancy promotion system that lets gamers get access to new music through Rock Band.

In the history of popular music, there are a handful of genres that have been maligned to the point that they're remembered as the absolute nadir of culture, even if there might have been a handful of tunes worth saving on your iPod. Disco is the prime example, and no amount of Abba-based musicals or "Saturday Night Fever" retrospectives will wash away the memories of people dancing awkwardly to Donna Summer at Studio 54. The swing revival from the late '90s will never be mentioned in any loving retrospectives despite some quality singles from Squirrel Nut Zippers, and though plenty of the bands from the era are still working and drawing crowds and sales, nobody ever really says, "You know what I miss? Nü metal!"
And then there's ska, or specifically the ska-punk revival that flooded the airwaves between 1993 and 1998. The micro-genre that blended the Third Wave sound of the...

If you're celebrating your Irish heritage this week you'll want to be sure to include some tune-age that gets you in the St. Patty's spirit. Country star Alan Jackson has scored his fourth U.S. number one album after his Good Times debuted at the top of the new chart.
