Michael J. Barnes is the Artistic Director of the Department of Theatre
and Dance, an Associate Professor of Theatre, Voice & Speech, and
serves as the Voice Specialist for Hilberry Theatre Companyat Wayne
State University. He is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma (BFA)
and from The National Theatre Conservator (MFA), is certified as an
Associate Teacher of Fitzmaurice Voicework, and has served on the Board
of Directors for the Voice & Speech Trainers Association. Some
productions he has directed in theatre include: Batboy, Guys & DOlls,
Hairpray, Ragtime, Ain't Misbehavin', Into the Woods, Little Shop of
Horrors, Desdemona: A Play About a Handkerchief, How I Learned to
Drive, and Eastern Standard. Regionally, he has voice, speech and
dialect coached for the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Shakespeare Santa
Cruz, Arena Stage, Wilma Theatre, Denver Center Theatre Company, Studio
Theatre, Rep Stage Company, Pearl Theatre, People's Light and Theatre,
Venture Theatre, Everyman Theatre, and the Colorado Shakespeare
Festival. He coached the films: Convicted (aka Return to Sender) with
Aidan Quinn, Kelly Preston, Connie Nielson, and Tim Daly--directed by
Academy Award winner Bille August; Broken Bridges, with Kelly Preston,
Toby Keith, Burt Reynolds, Tess Harper, and Lindsay Haun -- directed by
Steven Goldman; and Master Class with Faye Dunaway. He has been on the
faculties acting training programs at the University of Miami and
Temple University.
