With all due respect to everything that made Masters of the Universe so popular during the 1980s, there is no denying the fact that through numerous retellings of the saga, the characterization and narrative treatment have always oscillated between edginess and stagnation. Thanks to the dedicated collectors, the franchise has managed to keep its footing for so long in the pop culture landscape, which otherwise doesn’t allow space for such dated lore, which hardly grew in the span of thirty years. The challenge of exploring new possibilities while remaining faithful to the essence of the source material seemed to be a daunting task, especially when it came time to tackle the He-Man lore.
With Netflix allowing much-needed freedom, Kevin Smith’s Masters of the Universe adaptations finally break the shackles of the franchise’s’ outdated treatment as they manage to strike the perfect balance between new ideas and the original vision of the makers.

One of the defining features of toy line-oriented franchise is that there is no shortage of visually appealing characters. A vast number of behavioral archetypes and appearance combinations ensure a steady supply of characters, targeted to bolster sales numbers while ignoring the quality of the writing behind them. Similarly, one of Mattel’s most popular toy line IPs, Masters of the Universe set in the fantasy-adventure genre, boasts a significant number of key figures which have gone through little to no change since their first appearance during the 80s.

Plot: The new epic chapter in the battle for Castle Grayskull!. The newly mechanized Skeletor, armed with Motherboard’s might, attacks Eternia’s heart while Prince Adam grapples with a new responsibility and what that means for him as He-Man!
Review: Back in 2021, I gave a glowing review to Kevin Smith’s revival of He-Man. Titled Masters of the Universe: Revelation, the Netflix original was released in two five-episode drops, both of which I loved. A blend of modern animation techniques coupled with a throwback to the Filmation style of the 1980s cartoon, Revelation was blasted online by a vocal minority who disliked Smith’s decision to “kill off” Prince Adam in the first episode and make the series centered on Teela and many of the female characters. By the end of the full series, Smith’s vision came to fruition, even though many fans were not swayed. The second...

Aside from the transformation gimmick being a common factor, both the Masters of the Universe and Transformers franchises share the similarity of first and foremost being popular toy lines that were infused with distinctive lore in the 1980s to boost their sales. Even though Transformers has managed to expand its scope by adapting to changing times and finding a place across generations, the fantasy-adventure-oriented saga of He-Man has been stuck in the bubble of time for far too long and failed to appease a newer audience. After multiple attempts to revive the franchise failed through the years, Netflix and Mattel took a gamble in their efforts to rework the existing lore with a character-driven approach and bold narrative choices and brought the animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelations to light. In many ways, the series subverted the expectations of He-Man fans, resulting in extremely divisive reactions.

While Kevin Smith’s Netflix animated series Masters of the Universe: Revelation was envisioned as a follow-up to the 1980s show He-Man and the Masters of the Universe, it also included some nods to the 1987 live-action Masters of the Universe film, including the presence of flying discs, the characters of Pigboy and Blade, and even a line of dialogue that was lifted from the movie. So now that Smith and Netflix are moving forward with the sequel series Masters of the Universe: Revolution, it seems fitting that a cast member from the 1987 film has joined the voice cast. Coming Soon reports that Meg Foster, who played Evil-Lyn on screen in ’87, will be providing the voice of Motherboard, “who is described as “”an ancient sorceress of technology in the fight for the soul of Eternia.”

Melissa Benoist is going from DC Comics to the land of Eternia. The "Supergirl" star has officially joined the cast of the upcoming "Masters of the Universe: Revolution," which is currently in the works at Netflix. Benoist will be voicing Teela, as announced by Mattel in a press release. She joins a stacked cast that is led by Chris Wood as He-Man and "Star Wars" icon Mark Hamill as Skeletor, as well as "Star Trek" legend William Shatner, whose role has yet to be announced.
This marks Benoist's third collaboration with Kevin Smith, who executive produces the series. It serves as a follow-up to 2021's "Masters of the Universe: Revelation," which itself was a continuation of the original "He-Man" series from the '80s. Benoist previously appeared in "Jay and Silent Bob Reboot" as well as "Clerks III." Smith also directed several episodes of "Supergirl." Benoist had this to say...

If one knows anything about filmmaker Kevin Smith, it's that he loves "Star Wars." Also superhero comics. He is an old-school Gen-x pop culture nerd. If the Death Star conversation in his 1994 film "Clerks" wasn't enough evidence, the constant Marvel Comics references in his 1995 film "Mallrats" ought to clinch it. Smith was even able to secure a cameo from Stan Lee, playing himself. Lee, reading from a script Smith wrote, got to brag about how he has had more sex partners than Mick Jagger. Then, not to be outdone, "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" -- notice the title -- featured a cameo from Mark Hamill, also playing himself. He appears in costume as a movie superhero named ... well, his name cannot be printed in a safe-for-work website.
But Smith is more than a mere fanboy. He's involved. The filmmaker has repeatedly been involved with "Star Wars" side projects, and...

It’s easy to imagine the eye-rolling that’s being done upon seeing this pick since some lists would have Teela as the number one pick, and they’re not wrong since in the Revelations version she’s definitely come forward in a big way. But in the original series, it’s fair to say that she wasn’t given the same amount of leeway since He-Man and many others were given more of a chance to shine. But one of the great things about He-Man is that despite being huge, heavily muscled, with an awesome weapon, an armored tiger to ride into battle, and strength

James Gunn responded on Twitter this week to claims that his DC Comics tentpole “The Suicide Squad” is being review-bombed ahead of its U.S. release by supporters of “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” (commonly referred to as the Snyder Cut). Review-bombing refers to fans spamming aggregation websites such as Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb with negative user ratings to bring down a film’s overall score. “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” and “Captain Marvel” are two prominent examples of films that were review-bombed before release. The review-bombing of “Captain Marvel” led to Rotten Tomatoes disarming user ratings until after a film opens.
Here’s what Gunn had to say after a fan mentioned on social media that the “Snyder Cut crew” was review bombing “The Suicide Squad”: “I’ll live — stuff like this means nothing in the big picture.”
Kevin Smith recently spoke out against the review-bombing of his...

Bringing back He-Man and the Master of the Universe was always a no brainer. The original cartoon, which ran for just two years back in mid 80s, while massively derivative was also massively influential. Netflix had already hit creative paydirt with its Anime-influenced She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, the smart, overtly queer, rainbow-filled delight that wrapped up its run in 2020.
Bringing Adora’s super-swole brother back was an obvious move. That Kevin Smith was at the helm, promising a direct follow up to the old cartoons and featuring barely-messed-with character designs, only sharpened the excitement.
He-Man, of course, has been rebooted before – three times, in fact, if you count the 1987 live action film – and never especially successfully. Those previous versions, as with She-Ra and the Princesses of Power, were specifically designed to take the frame of the original story and drape a more up-to-date adventure for modern kids over it.

[Editor’s note: The following post contains spoilers for “Masters of the Universe: Revelation.”]
Kevin Smith’s animated Netflix series “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” is the latest bit of franchise IP to become the victim of toxic fandom. Similar to Rian Johnson’s “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” Smith’s direct sequel series to “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe” (1983-85) is being review bombed on Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb and trolled on social media for taking the franchise in directions fans don’t agree (via Variety). A lot of the toxic backlash stems from Smith’s decision to seemingly kill off main characters He-Man and Skeletor in the pilot episode. The twist allows supporting characters like the female warrior Teela to assume lead roles as they search for magic that can bring He-Man back.
“I know there’s some people that are like, ‘Hey, man, this show’s woke,’” Smith told Variety about the backlash. “I’m like,...
