PARIS -- Three months after president Jacques Chirac urged French television channels to give more screen time to the country's ethnic minorities, leading commercial network TF1 has appointed its first black newsreader, TF1 said Tuesday. Harry Roselmack, whose family hails from the French Caribbean island of Martinique, will join TF1 from the Canal Plus-owned all-news channel i-tele this summer. Roselmack will serve as the holiday replacement for longstanding TF1 anchorman Patrick Poivre d'Arvor on the main evening bulletin. This will give him unprecedented visibility, since the bulletin claims to be Europe's highest-rated news broadcast, with an average market share of 39% and some 9 million viewers nightly. Roselmack also will present on TF1's all-news channel, LCI.
