"The thrill of what might be behind the door of that little shop." 1091 Pictures has unveiled an official trailer for Vinyl Nation, a documentary about the return of vinyl and resurgence of records in modern times. This originally premiered at various film festivals in 2020 and has been playing on the festival circuit these last two years. Vinyl Nation is a deep dig into the crates of the vinyl record resurgence to discover what an old technology says about our relationship to music and each other in a divided time in America. Some of the questions the film asks: "Has the return of vinyl made music fandom more inclusive or divided? What does vinyl say about our past here in the present? How has the second life of vinyl changed how we hear music and how we listen to each other?" The doc film features Judy Mills, Ashley C. Ford,...

Music makes the movie with David Lowery’s haunting fantasy drama film, “A Ghost Story.” Much of the narrative is based around music: both its significance to the characters and its significance in telling the story of coping with love and loss for the living and the deceased. While the dialogue itself offers beautiful bits of wisdom and food for thought, the film’s score invokes emotions that even those who haven’t experienced profound loss will understand and connect with.

The film hit theaters on July 7 after generating tons of buzz during its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year, and now the film’s brilliant soundtrack, composed by solo violinist Daniel Hart, is available to stream. A mix of eerie yet beautiful and calming tracks set the tone for the equally haunting and beautiful movie.

Music plays an appropriately haunting part in David Lowery’s Sundance hit “A Ghost Story,” which follows his “Ain’t Them Bodies Saints” stars Rooney Mara and Casey Affleck as they attempt to navigate love, loss, and the afterlife in the filmmaker’s daringly intimate feature. (Affleck’s character eventually becomes a ghost in the film, but before his unexpected death, he’s a talented musician, and the music doesn’t stop after he shuffles off this mortal coil…kind of, sort of, not really.)
The film will hit theaters later this summer, along with a soundtrack filled to bursting with evocative tracks that unspool over the course of the riveting film, and we’ve got a batch of exclusive details on the album, complete with a first listen at one of its most essential songs.

Here's your daily dose of an indie film in progress; at the end of the week, you'll have the chance to vote for your favorite. In the meantime: Is this a movie you'd want to see? Tell us in the comments. "Kickstarted" Tweetable Logline: An original documentary about the crowdfunding revolution. Elevator Pitch: This is the first documentary to look at the crowdfunding revolution and the people powering it. The film will follow the inspiring, dramatic stories of a handful of crowdfunded project creators as they raise money and then, with all of their dreams and social capital on the line, have to deliver. Those journeys are set against the background of a bigger cultural and economic sea change — where the creative/entrepreneurial class can create their own projects independently. The film will also have interviews with Zach Braff, Amanda Palmer, John Vanderslice, Brian Fargo and dozens of other prominent crowdfunding personalities.

And this is what the title screen song for Team Meat's upcoming mystery game "Mew-Genics" sounds like. Its official title is "Mew-Genics (Cat Chase)" by Matthias Bossi (whose work and site you can find here) and Jon Evans, both of whom will be writing and composing the planned 20-song soundtrack album for the game.
Evans and Bossi won't be the only contributors, though: Team Meat co-founder Edmund McMillen teased that we can expect announcements about special guest contributors in the lead-up to the game's release.
Here's the official bios for Bossi and Evans:
Drummer/Composer Matthias Bossi (Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, Skeleton Key, The Book Of Knots) and Bassist/Engineer/Producer Jon Evans (Tori Amos, Linda Perry) somehow simultaneously and magically moved to the same tiny fishing village in Massachusetts. When they're not making music together, they drink coffee and chop wood.

Last month, Paste gave you a free download of “Never Going Back,” a track from Samantha Crain’s forthcoming album Kid Face. The track itself exemplifies the kinds of heartfelt lyrics for which Crain has been lauded since the beginning of her career. Kid Face will be Crain’s third full-lenth. She recorded the album with the help of producer John Vanderslice, and it is set for release on Ramseur Records on Feb. 19. As with many of Crain’s lyrically complex tracks, a listen sparks many questions about the song’s origin. You can catch Crain in the video below, explaining the lyrics...

There is so much going on at SXSW, just on the good old music front alone, that one person could not possibly absorb it all. Attempts have been made to be sure, but the more daring soul usually ends up with a condition called 6th street burnout (which may or may not include waking up in the back of a random band van without any pants). In an effort to stave that off I'll be highlighting a few choice events each week leading up to the festival, to help you (and I) plan ahead.
It's not easy sticking to a plan at SXSW, in fact spontaneity is often best, but here's a couple showcases I intend to bounce between on Wednesday, luckily they're at the same venue.
Wednesday March 16 Jagjaguwar/Secretly Canadian showcase:
Red 7 Patio (w/ Tig Notaro as Mc)
8:30- 9:10 Lia Ices
9:30- 10:15 Special Guests...

For more than a decade, John Vanderslice has created compelling music, first with his band, Mk Ultra, then as a solo artist. Since 1997, Vanderslice has owned and operated Tiny Telephone Studio, earning the respect of notable clients and peers such as Death Cab for Cutie and Okkervil River while providing a steady revenue stream. He commonly puts out an album a year, and in the past 12 months alone, has recorded a free digital-only Ep and an LP with the Magik Magik Orchestra, to be released on Jan. 25 by Dead Oceans, his new label after leaving longtime hub...

Director: Jim Granato Pat Spurgeon is a musician whose lifelong dream of being in a successful rock band is coming true with his band Rogue Wave. Unfortunately, just as Rogue Wave starts to take off, Spurgeon’s kidney (a transplant he received 13 years prior) begins to show signs of failing. As a career musician, Spurgeon is uninsured and has no “back-up plan.” Faced with twice a day dialysis and a search for a new kidney, Spurgeon simultaneously prepares to embark on a grueling tour with Rogue Wave because he does not want to forfeit his lifelong dream (and career). The tour is nicknamed the “D tour” because Spurgeon needs to get a “D” (for dialysis) fix twice a day. D Tour follows Spurgeon on his rocky and emotional quest for a matching kidney and overall health. Produced, directed, shot and co-edited by Jim Granato D Tour deals with two seminal...
