The Lost Boys wasn’t just a massive box office success, it was also a game-changer in vampire media, making the undead hip again and convincing a whole generation that they too could become juvenile vampire hunters (though I know a lot of people who wouldn’t mind joining Kiefer Sutherland’s punk-rock group of dreamy Nosferatu).
And as is often in the case in Hollywood, the film’s near-instant popularity meant that the studio was immediately interested in a follow-up, with director Joel Schumacher even coming up with a pitch titled “The Lost Girls” meant to follow a different tribe of female vampires. Of course, we all know that this project never materialized, and fans were forever left to wonder about what a proper Lost Boys sequel might look like. Or were they?
What a lot of horror fans don’t realize is that we actually did get not...

Academy Award-nominated producer Brian Oliver launched a new production and financing venture, New Republic Pictures, on Tuesday, with a first-look agreement at Paramount Pictures.
Under its first-look deal, Paramount will co-finance and distribute some of New Republic films. The two companies have agreed to co-finance Paramount’s Elton John biopic “Rocketman,” starring “Kingsman” star Taron Egerton. Academy Award-nominee Lee Hall (“Billy Elliot”) wrote the screenplay and Dexter Fletcher (“Eddie the Eagle” and “Bohemian Rhapsody”) will direct.
“Earlier stops in my career, especially at Propaganda Films and Cross Creek Pictures, allowed me to learn all aspects of production, finance, distribution, and marketing, and to construct my own company from that extensive knowledge base in every aspect of the business,” Oliver said in a statement. “Building a new company from the ground up was a bit more challenging than I imagined and there have been a couple starts and stops with potential financing partners, but I believe the things I learned throughout this process will allow me to position my investors in even better ways for continued success.”

Oliver was the co-founder of the production and financing company Cross Creek Pictures before launching New Republic Pictures. At Cross Creek, he was responsible for spearheaded award-winning films such as “Black Swan” and “Hacksaw Ridge.”
Films that Oliver has helped produce have received 13 Oscars nominations, 14 Golden Globe nominations and 23 BAFTA Award nominations, along with more than $1.4 billion of worldwide box-office grosses.

Before “Twilight,” before “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” there was “The Lost Boys.”
The seminal 1987 teen vampire flick starred Corey Haim as a confused teenager battling a band of leather-clad alterna-vampires in his new hometown of Santa Carla, California. The role helped establish Haim as a legitimate movie heartthrob in the wake of his first semi-hit, 1986’s weepy “Lucas,” and it kicked off a career-long association and friendship with fellow troubled teen actor and co-star, Corey Feldman.
The 38-year-old Haim, who was found dead of a suspected drug overdose on Wednesday in Los Angeles, played Sam Emerson in the film, a nerdy, excitable teen forced to move to the mysterious coastal California town after his mother’s divorce. Shortly after their arrival, older brother Michael (Jason Patric), falls for the sensuous Star (Jamie Gertz) and is seduced into joining the pre-Hot Topic-looking vamp gang led by David (Kiefer Sutherland), while Haim...

Many people may not even be aware that there was a Lost Boys sequel, but last year saw the release of Lost Boys: The Tribe. The title became a straight-to-dvd sensation, making back its $5 million dollar budget in just three weeks of DVD sales. The Tribe saw the return of Corey Feldman as Edgar Frog, a vampire hunter with an attitude, as well as Angus Sutherland filling in for his brother Kiefer. Corey Haim returned as well, but only for one scene at the end of the movie, while the other Frog brother, Jamison Newlander, only appeared in an alternate ending found on the DVD. Feldman told ShockTillYouDrop that the Frog Brothers will reunite for the third installment, titled Lost Boys: The Thirst.
We can't give away that much information right now. All I can tell you is this is officially the return of the Frog Brothers. We've gone through many stories.

A second sequel to the 1987 Joel Schumacher film The Lost Boys looks to be moving forward, with Blood Disgusting reporting veteran TV writer Evan Charnov has signed on to write the script. Just like the first sequel, Lost Boys: The Tribe, part three will be a straight to disc release. The site also says Corey Feldman will be back to play Edgar Frog as the flick is expected to focus on the vampire hunter character, more so than The Tribe. As for Corey Haim, who hits the big screen in April in Crank 2, Bd says it’s very unlikely that he’ll return. Moviehole is also reporting that Jamison Newlander will be back to play Alan Frog. Newlander appeared in The Tribe but his scenes were deleted. Moviehole sources claim this new flick is the “official return of the Frog brothers”. The original film centered on two young Arizonans...

**Note: This will be at the top for a bit; new stories will appear below!** It was the best of times, it was the worst of times; it was the age of remakes -- also known as the age of foolishness; it was the epoch of bad, it was the epoch of incredible; it was the season of fright, it was the season of dumb; it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair -- and man, did we have a lot of it; we had everything before us, we had nothing before us; some flicks took us directly to heaven, others took us the other way. The year was 2008, and it was pretty memorable.

I came home to several new Blu-ray discs that arrived in the time I was away and out of all of them eight of them hit the shelves today. Six of them I am going to detail here as they are catalog titles. The others I will get to in a second. The first one was Top Gun of which I reviewed on HD DVD (review here) and was not very kind to considering the HD DVD edition contained none of the features from the 2-Disc Special Edition DVD. Well, I am happy to say the Blu-ray comes with all the goodies (documentaries, music videos, commentaries, etc.) that I loved from the DVD. On top of that... included is a DTS soundtrack, a Huge step up from the HD DVD Dolby DigitalPlus.
