In a competitive situation, Apple has acquired the rights to Taffy Brodesser-Akner’s upcoming novel Long Island Compromise to develop as a series.
Just like she did with the FX adaptation of her debut novel, Fleishman Is In Trouble, Brodesser-Akner will write Long Island Compromise, which she will executive produce with Richard Plepler through his Apple-based Eden Productions as well Fleishman Is In Trouble executive producers Sarah Timberman and Carl Beverly of Timberman/Beverly Productions and Susannah Grant.
Ahead of its July 9, 2024 publication by Random House, Long Island Compromise created a stir when it hit the TV marketplace earlier this year. Multiple studios pursued the book, with bids involving as much as $1M upfront, before the actual deal is negotiated.

Michael Douglas and the cast of Franklin touched down in Cannes today with a message. Speaking to press ahead of the world premiere screening of the series at Canneseries on Wednesday evening, the actor said the Apple TV+ period drama is a great reminder of “how fragile democracy is and how generous France was.”
The series was entirely filmed in France, and Douglas spoke about returning to the country to launch the show before it’s bow on Apple TV+ on April 12. “It’s coals to Newcastle – this is where our whole project is based: It is the story of Benjamin Franklin coming to France to save America.”
The star, a French speaker and regular at the Cannes Film Festival, added: “The least we could do was come back and say, ‘Thank you, France – thank you first for saving America. [We are] reminding everyone of that story and role France played – and...

It’s powdered wigs on parade in the new Franklin trailer, starring Michael Douglas as the calculating Newton of Electricity, Benjamin Franklin! As someone who performed miserably in history class throughout his schooling career, I was sure Apple’s upcoming limited series would not be to my liking. However, Michael Douglas transforms Benjamin Franklin into a charismatic, cryptic, and conniving figure. This portrayal is the jolt I needed to get interested in this fascinating television event.
Based upon A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America by Pulitzer Prize winner Stacy Schiff, the series will “explore the thrilling story of one of the greatest gambles of Benjamin Franklin’s career. At age 70, without any diplomatic training, Franklin convinced France – an absolute monarchy – to underwrite America’s experiment in democracy. By virtue of his fame, charisma, and ingenuity, Franklin outmaneuvered British spies, French informers, and hostile colleagues, all while...

Michael Douglas Is Definitely ‘Up to Something’ as Benjamin Franklin in Apple TV+ ‘Franklin’ Trailer
Turns out, Benjamin Franklin didn’t just sit around perfecting bifocals.
Apple TV+ today released the trailer for its eight-part limited series “Franklin,” starring and executive produced by Michael Douglas. The first three episodes will premiere globally on the Apple SVOD service on Friday, April 12; the next five episodes will role out one at a time on subsequent Fridays through May 17.
“Franklin” is based on Stacy Schiff’s book “A Great Improvisation: Franklin, France, and the Birth of America.” The series tells “the thrilling story of the greatest gamble of Benjamin Franklin’s career” — outside of holding a lightning rod in a thunderstorm, we imagine.
In 1776, the world-famous inventor faces his ultimate test: a secret mission to recruit France to help America fight for its independence in the Revolutionary War. And, oh yeah, he was 70 and Transatlantic travel hadn’t exactly been perfected.

According to the New York Times, which first reported the news, the cancellation came after creative differences between the iPhone maker and Stewart over potential topics and guests for The Problem. The Nyt reported that Stewart informed his staff Thursday that Apple pushed back on topics relating to China and artificial intelligence. Production on season three was already under way, with filming poised to begin shortly.
Apple declined to comment.

HBO’s Insecure is now streaming on Netflix, marking the first time an HBO original series is available on a rival streaming platform in the U.S.
All five seasons of the Issa Rae-fronted series, which aired its series finale in 2021, landed on the rival platform on Monday, confirming reports that the show could be among the Warner Bros. Discovery-owned titles added to Netflix.
The streamer is also set to add Band of Brothers, The Pacific, Six Feet Under and Ballers as part of a co-exclusive deal with Wbd’s Max, which closed late last week. Additionally, HBO series True Blood will be added to Netflix outside the U.S.
HBO has rarely licensed its original shows beyond its own corporate siblings, with Sex and the City sold in syndication (with significant edits) to TBS and later other basic cable networks. And when Richard Plepler was CEO, HBO licensed series like The Sopranos,...

It’s the syndication move that nobody expected.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Warner Bros. Discovery is actively talking with Netflix to license HBO shows — including Insecure — to the streamer. Such a deal would be considered a stunning move for the two big-spending rivals, neither of whom immediately responded to THR’s request for comment on the potential licensing pact late Tuesday.
Should a deal close, licensed content would stream on both Netflix and the newly rebranded Max. It would become the first time that HBO’s prized original series would be available on a rival streaming platform in the U.S.

Casey Bloys was about four years into his tenure as a programming executive at HBO when he was driven to champion a project that was disliked by others at the network.
At first blush, the brilliantly raunchy Danny McBride comedy “Eastbound & Down” might have seemed out of place among the erudite offerings on HBO. When the series premiered in February 2009, HBO was still known for its New York-centric (“Sex and the City”) and Hollywood-set (“Entourage”) comedies. “Eastbound” revolved around Kenny Powers, a washed-up, foulmouthed, amoral former professional baseball player who heads home to North Carolina.
HBO brass weren’t sure “Eastbound” fit their high-end brand. But Bloys, then the network’s young head of comedy, knew McBride had something with the show. “I truly thought and continue to think the show is funny,” Bloys says. “And it was at a point in my career where I was learning how...

Can you remember the last time a documentary actually took your breath away?
I can. It happened on the evening of Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2014, in a theater at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. The film was Citizenfour, which documented the encounters between National Security Agency whistleblower Edward Snowden and the filmmaker/journalists Laura Poitras, Glenn Greenwald and Ewen MacAskill.
My datebook for the day simply said “Poitras”—she was on hand to introduce the picture, of which I had no particular expectations. Documentaries come, and documentaries go by the hundred, after all. This one, I thought, was just one more in a crowded season.
But within minutes I knew I was wrong, stunningly so. In a shocking act of cinematic transgression, Poitras and her colleagues had risked the rage of multiple governments to record evidence of vast surveillance overreach by virtually unfettered intelligence agencies. They had filmed Snowden in real time,...

American period drama "Boardwalk Empire" ended its five-season run, plot-wise, with the termination of Prohibition in the early 1930s. Enoch "Nucky" Thompson (Steve Buscemi) and his disreputable associates rose and fell alongside the crest of a nationwide ban on alcoholic beverage sales the decade prior. Speaking to Esquire at the celebrated series' conclusion in 2014, creator Terence Winter recalled Martin Scorsese's involvement in the show, which quickly evolved from producing to directing the pilot:
"HBO told me, 'You're going to go to Martin Scorsese's house and meet him to talk about the show' and I was like a girl going to the prom. What should I wear? [laughs] Literally, I got to his house 20 minutes early and walked around the block. I didn't want to be too early, I didn't want to be too late, I didn't want to appear too eager. This was one of my idols. It's really kind of goofy,...

George R.R. Martin told The New York Times that he was kept “out of the loop” during the last four seasons of HBO’s “Game of Thrones,” a mistake that “House of the Dragon” co-showrunner Ryan Condal did not want to make during the development of the upcoming prequel series. “House of the Dragon” is based on Martin’s 2018 novel “Fire & Blood.” Martin maintained that he doesn’t know why “Thrones” showrunners D.B. Weiss and David Benioff let him become estranged from the show.
According to The Times: “As Condal got to work on ‘House of the Dragon,’ he leaned on Martin’s expertise a lot — the opposite of what had happened with Martin in the later seasons of ‘Game of Thrones.’ In the early seasons, Martin wrote and read scripts, consulted on casting decisions and visited sets. Over time, however, as he stepped back to focus on his long-delayed next ‘Thrones’ novel,...
