There are always Oscar snubs. But this one is striking the media as particularly egregious: Greta Gerwig wasn’t nominated for best director for Barbie — a film that was not only the biggest hit of the year and helped to bring moviegoers back to cinema with the success of “Barbenheimer,” but was also nominated for best picture and, by any measure, was a very tricky project to pull off. In addition, Barbie star Margot Robbie was snubbed for best actress, while Ryan Gosling and America Ferrera were nominated for supporting.
People have thoughts.
“Both Gerwig and Robbie ignored … it’s still so easy for Hollywood to overlook and discount artistic contributions of women — Even When Its The Point Of The Year’S Biggest Movie!” wrote MSNBC host Jennifer Palmieri. “My God. It was nominated for best picture. Didn’t direct itself, friends!”

His “retirement” a decade ago didn’t last. It couldn’t possibly. Steven Soderbergh is just too curious, too prolific, and far too in love with the work — the process of assembling a team to complete a herculean task, in particular — to hang it up. It’s a big reason why the 60-year-old filmmaker and television creator is a massive fan of Bravo’s Below Deck, about the crew of a charter yacht catering to its filthy rich clients’ impossible whims, and also why he’s constantly innovating. Over the past decade,...

Spoiler Alert: This interview discusses the events of “Command Z,” now available to purchase on its official website.
AI anxieties are only getting higher. Global temperatures are skyrocketing. Billionaires are challenging each other to mixed martial arts duels. Like everybody else, Steven Soderbergh and Kurt Andersen are wondering how to hit “undo” on the trajectory of civilization.
Available to purchase for $8 on its own official website, Soderbergh and Andersen’s “Command Z” begins in the year 2053. The story follows a trio of jumpsuit-sporting time-travelers, who influence the minds of the inhabitants of 2023 to nudge the world’s most powerful individuals into pumping the brakes on their world-dooming habits. The wisecracking coworkers are employed by deceased billionaire Kerning Fealty (Michael Cera) — or, at least an eldritch hologram AI with his likeness that doesn’t exactly scream collective interests. Sound familiar?

Director Steven Soderbergh has never really been a fan of orthodoxy, and his idiosyncratic approach to his own work was on full display Sunday night when he launched his latest project, sci-fi series Command Z, at the Metrograph in New York. The Michael Cera-starring dystopian narrative, inspired by Kurt Andersen’s book Evil Geniuses: The Unmaking of America: A Recent History, was shown as part of a “secret screening” for members of the downtown theater.
Soderbergh followed the screening with a Q&a with Florida Representative Maxwell Frost, the first Gen Z congressman, explaining to the audience, “I don’t really want to talk about the show,” and instead quizzing Frost about how he stays hopeful. “How do we convince people to not give up?” Soderbergh asked Frost, who in turn discussed his path to politics and his work organizing.
Though maybe not exactly what the gathered cinephiles came for,...

Hollywood star Alec Baldwin brought back his famous Donald Trump impersonation, an act that became a comic routine for the American actor on SNL during Trump’s presidency.
In his latest Instagram post, the actor dons a snappy white shirt, red tie and navy blue slacks – and pops a squat on the toilet, reports Mirror.co.uk.
With his boomer boxers around his ankles, he pouts as he looks out a nearby window, his orange-blond hair slicked back in a familiar fashion.
The next picture has a stylist spraying hair product onto a strand of his fiery locks that he holds up dramatically, his puckered lips still protruding from his clean-shaven face.
Hold up a second… Alec Baldwin’s hair isn’t orange-blond – it’s usually much more silvery in nature. And what happened to his grey beard?
As per Mirror.co.uk, the third and fourth pictures reveal the...

As Donald Trump’s presidency comes to a close, so does Alec Baldwin’s time as his top impersonator. To cap off the last four years, Baldwin and writer Kurt Andersen have collaborated on Hasta la Vista, America: Trump’s Farewell Address, an audiobook imagining a final speech by the president.
The 42-minute Pushkin Industries project, written by Andersen and performed by Baldwin, encompasses a parody of a Farewell Address, 2021 State of the Union Address and a preview of an imagined blockbuster presidential memoir, along with music and sound effects.
“I was only interested in doing Trump, again, in any form,...

Catie Lazarus, a writer, magazine contributor and comedian who developed and hosted an live, onstage New York celebrity talk show that grew from appearances at the Upright Citizens Brigade to a regular spot at Public Theater’s popular Joe’s Pub venue in Manhattan, died Sunday of cancer at her home in Brooklyn. She was 44.
Family members announced her death on social media.
Since moving to Joe’s Pub in 2014, Lazarus’ show, called Employee of the Month, became one of the venue’s most popular offerings. More than 250 interviews were recorded and used for weekly Slate podcasts, each marked by Lazarus’ funny, warm and emotionally generous approach to conversation.

Welcome back to the Fantasy League, Zoners!
It has been an eventful, newsy break, what with the excitement about Stephen’s upcoming performance in Company, followed by the big sail from Charleston to Bermuda. When does the man sleep? What surprise will he spring on us next? I’m blown away, so this week I’m going to take a slight detour and ask a fun question: Since this is the Fantasy League, what is your Professional Stephen fantasy? What artistic challenge would you like to see him take on—something theatrical? Musical? Cinematic? Literary?
I’ll give you mine: I want to see Stephen star in a remake of the film A Face in the Crowd, playing the role of Lonesome Rhodes (a terrific Andy Griffith originally, very far from Mayberry). It’s the dark side of Colbert Nation, an image of what could happen if Stephen were to...
