Rashaad Ernesto Green will direct “’68,” a biopic about the careers and lives of Olympic runners and activists Tommie Smith and John Carlos for MGM, Participant and MacRo.
MGM announced news of the project Thursday, which tells the story of Smith and Carlos from their first meeting on the track team at San Jose State to the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City. As the two received medals for the 200 meter race, they raised their fists in salute and silent protest during the American national anthem. The event caused widespread controversy at the time, and is still regarded as one of the most political moments in the history of the Olympics.
“Still incredibly powerful and relevant, I’m honored for the opportunity to bring Tommie and John’s riveting story to life; to portray the weight of the world these two giants had on their shoulders and the self-determination, courage and sacrifice...

Premature filmmaker Rashaad Ernesto Green is set to helm Metro Goldwyn Mayer (MGM), Participant and MacRo’s feature movie ’68 inspired by the true story of Olympians Tommie Smith and John Carlos. The track athletes from San Jose State rose to become Olympic medalists and activists at the 1968 Games in Mexico City. That’s where they both raised their fists in solidarity and in support of human rights.
The screenplay is by Oscar nominated scribe Billy Ray. Participant and MacRo will produce the project, along with Stacy Sherman.
Participant will be incorporating ’68 into its ongoing impact work dedicated to civil rights and social justice. Carlos’ nephews, Airrion and Shaun McCoy, and DeLois Smith, the wife of Tommie Smith, are co-producing.
Bronx-born filmmaker Green received the Independent Spirit Someone to Watch Award in 2020 for his second feature directorial, Premature, which premiered at Sundance Film Festival to rave reviews. Shot in Harlem, New York entirely on 16mm film,...

Rare is the instance in which I’d place Paranormal Activity 4 above (three out of four) of these other films, but… that’s just how it’s going to shake out today. One of the first new casting bits on a film hitting in less than four months has arrived from BloodyDisgusting, who report that a mostly unknown youngster, Matt Shively (Nickelodeon’s True Jackson, VP), will star as Alex. How will this new member fit into the series’ expanding, increasingly strange and fascinating mythology? All will be revealed on October 19th 2012.
Henry Joost and Ariel Schulman will return from the third film, as will Katie Featherston and Sprague Grayden.
Now, on to the really big stuff: The Wolf of Wall Street took a nice weekend off, but it’s right back into the name game for Martin Scorsese‘s next. Deadline have learned that Kenneth Choi (Captain America,...

Chicago – With each passing year, Katherine Heigl’s claims about Judd Apatow’s sexism appear increasingly absurd. While Apatow is producing A-grade work from female filmmakers, such as “Bridesmaids” and HBO’s “Girls,” Heigl is portraying shallow ditzes who are susceptible to chauvinistic, overgrown adolescents. “The Ugly Truth,” “Killers,” “Life as We Know It” and “New Years Eve” is not a track record worth bragging about.
Yet the worst crime committed by Heigl’s latest bomb, “One for the Money,” is that it is a complete bore. There isn’t a character or situation that inspires any modicum of interest. Viewers unfamiliar with novelist Janet Evanovich’s beloved heroine Stephanie Plum will fail to see what all the fuss is about. The script crams Evanovich’s hugely popular novels into a run-of-the-mill star vehicle fusing tired sitcom banter with a predictable murder mystery. This is the sort of picture that destroyed Whoopi Goldberg’s career.

Having already accumulated quite a lengthy animation resume through countless episodes of Family Guy, Mila Kunis‘ latest job can’t be too much of a creative stretch. As Deadline reports, she’s climbed aboard the stop-motion animated Hell & Back, joining a group that already consists of T.J. Miller, Nick Swardson, Brian Posehn, Rob Riggle, and Kumail Nanjiani.
Centered on “two guys (Miller and Swardson) who must rescue their friend after he’s dragged into hell,” Hell & Back will have Kunis voicing “a [half-human] female demon whose ability to navigate the underworld makes her the toughest rogue demon in Hell.” (Her birth can be accounted for an instance in which “Orpheus of myth traveled down the River Styx, nailing everything in sight.”) Tom Gianas and Ross Shuman are currently shooting (or whatever you would call the process), with a 2013 release expected.

Who is Claire and how come she gets her own Cambodia?
We have a feeling that "Claire's Cambodia" is a film with more of a metaphorical title than a literal one, and one that has attracted a cast that includes Sarah Paulson, Mary Kay Place and Mamie Gummer, according to Deadline.
"Cambodia" revolves around three sisters whose estrangement, resentment and envy of one another knows no bounds -- even upon the news that their father is terminally ill. The film is set to be directed by Stacy Sherman ("God Sleeps in Rwanda"), who says the city of Los Angeles, where the story is set, will become a character in and of itself as its sprawling size and diverse neighborhoods will illustrate the sisters' differences in a "comedic way."
L.A.'s going to have trouble upstaging a cast this good, though. Sarah Paulson's understated performance as Elizabeth Olsen's...

There is nothing in the world that makes my blood boil like the concept of ‘not trying’. ‘Not trying’ is the very hallmark of contempt: for yourself and for others. It is also a sign of weakness. One For The Money may be one of the most contemptuous, weak films to come out Hollywood in quite some time. It is also one of the worst films you will see in 2012, and we’re barely a month into the new year.
To call One For The Money a film would be a disservice to all films, including the annual bulls***t churned out by the likes of Michael Bay and Tyler Perry. It’s flimsy premise isn’t even worthy to be the pilot of a really bad TNT, USA, or Lifetime television show. It is a piece of work that simply doesn’t need to exist beyond the crappy section...

Chicago – Just under five years ago, Katherine Heigl became a decently known actress in the film world for her role as Alison in the Judd Apatow film “Knocked Up.” After having been in the show “Grey’s Anatomy” for a few years, Heigl had finally broke into the world of cinema, and seemed to have a decent amount of comedy acting skills. Now, several years and a few bad movies in a row, Heigl seems to be desperately holding on to whatever career she still has left.
