Green Lantern is one character that has been walked over for far too long, according to fans. While every other member of the Justice League was at least given a fighting chance, Hal Jordan was cast aside and never brought back into live action after the failure of the Ryan Reynolds film.
Ryan Reynolds in Green Lantern
Many fans have been begging for the character to be brought back in some way or another; be it in a series, a stand-alone film, or on the sidelines of another character’s story. Considering just how iconic and important he is in the comics, many do not think it is fair that the franchise has gone so long without actually incorporating him into the main series.
However, with the reboot and the DC Universe almost starting from scratch, James Gunn may have just teased something, and fans cannot control their excitement.

In early 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran introduced their rebooted universe named Dcu, unveiling a comprehensive lineup of projects. The most recent release in the Dceu was ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ last year, which achieved some success, especially compared to many MCU films from that year that struggled with critics and box office performance.
In January, Gunn and Safran revealed the initial projects of the Dcu lineup and announced the team of writers responsible for crafting the overarching story: Drew Goddard, Jeremy Slater, Christina Hodson, Christal Henry, and Tom King. They outlined a plan spanning eight to ten years, divided into “chapters,” with potential for further expansion. The first chapter, ‘Gods and Monsters,’ featured films like ‘Superman’ (originally titled ‘Superman: Legacy’), ‘The Authority,’ ‘The Brave and the Bold,’ ‘Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow,’ and ‘Swamp Thing,’ alongside television series such as ‘Creature Commandos,’ ‘Waller,’ ‘Lanterns,’ ‘Paradise Lost,’ and ‘Booster Gold....

In early 2023, James Gunn and Peter Safran presented their own new rebooted universe dubbed Dcu and presented a full slate of projects. The last movie released within the Dceu was last year’s ‘Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom’ which was somewhat of a success when you take into account that nearly all MCU movies released that year failed both when it comes to critics and when it comes to the box office.

James Gunn has been busy directing the first chapter of the new Dcu i.e. Superman (formerly Superman: Legacy). He is also simultaneously directing some episodes of Peacemaker season 2 and is handling all the grunt work that comes with being the co-chief of the new DC Studios.
It seems like part of the grunt work includes answering for the past projects of the Dcu (then the Dceu). The filmmaker was recently asked by a fan about the Green Lantern TV show for HBO Max that was in development starring American Horror Story’s Finn Wittrock. Gunn reportedly clarified the status of the project, which was announced back in 2021.

MCU May Have Only Been Successful Because Of What Bruce Timm Accomplished With The Dcau 20 Years Ago
As it stands today, even after a decade and a half of the franchise’s existence. the MCU is still the biggest and most revolutionary cinematic franchise to have been created in the history of cinema, which might never change even in the future.
But looking at things in retrospect, some keen-eyed observers may have realized that the idea of the shared multiverse that the franchise boasts of wasn’t pioneered by Marvel Studios originally.

Many people may have recognized the fact that the idea of a shared universe filled with superheroes and villains has been shown in the Dcau even before Kevin Feige took the reigns of Marvel Studios.
This was made possible under the leadership of the legendary DC producer and animator Bruce Timm, who popularized the idea of a superhero world, although, slightly differently than what Feige did.

When it came to the Dceu, Zack Snyder had quite the idea for his characters. They weren’t going to be just some usual run of the mill superheroes who had a conviction for doing good. For Snyder, it was so much more. He understood very well that life is never fair. The conundrums that categorise the postmodern era can’t be reflected in a hunky-dory world.
Hence the epiphany to explore with characters who would dare to start on the dark side of the spectrum, showing everyone’s favorite superheroes in a light no one could have imagined. And he was made to answer for that, with a section of fans questioning his choices. But he wasn’t the first to do so.

Young Justice, ever since it first started airing on television, was hailed for its expansive worldbuilding, and for the inclusion of diverse stories across a range of characters that pulled from every aspect of the DC Universe. Continuing that tradition, it seems that Young Justice has added yet another corner of the universe into its canon, one that belongs to a shortlived CG series, belonging to one of DC’s most powerful heroes.
Green Lantern: The Animated Series
Green Lantern: The Animated Series was a CG animated TV series, lauded as Bruce Timm’s return to television after Justice League Unlimited. The show was unfortunately canceled due to bad toy sales, just like Young Justice. The show was also canceled for failing to capitalize on the Green Lantern film, which flopped horribly in theatres and was panned by critics and audiences alike.

Ever since the Dceu came to an end, fans have been going wild with speculation about who could be playing the new versions of the DC superheroes appearing in James Gunn’s Dcu. While we already know about some, thanks to Superman currently being in production, some of the key characters are yet to be cast. One of them is the other half of The World’s Finest – the Caped Crusader, Batman.

Green Lantern, starring Ryan Reynolds as the titular character, was a critical disaster for DC. The film was panned by fans and critics alike, and even Reynolds refused to suit up to play Hal Jordan again.
Unfortunately, the film’s failure was not just limited to the box office. It had far-reaching effects, and one of the victims of the catastrophe was DC’s animated show. Green Lantern: The Animated Series could not evade the chopping block either, and its cancellation was tied to Reynold’s forgettable outing as the superhero.

Bruce Timm needs no introduction when it comes to the animation industry. The man, the myth, the legend was responsible for creating much of the childhoods of 90s/early 2000s kids whenever they were not at school. His DC creations such as Batman: The Animated Series, Superman: The Animated Series, and Justice League have achieved legendary status over time, and once pushed Cartoon Network’s ratings and viewership to sky-high levels.
John Stewart/ Green Lantern was voiced by Phil Lamarr in Justice League
Apart from the amazing artwork and breathtaking action scenes, these animated adaptations enthralled young minds due to the variety of characters that graced the screen, especially in Justice League and its later installments. Comic book enthusiasts would know that initially, Hal Jordan was the Green Lantern who joined the ranks of the Justice League. But in the show, it was John Stewart who replaced him as the ring-wielding superhero.

Bruce Timm started working with DC Animations since 1992’s Batman: The Animated Series. Since then, he has worked on numerous projects that have come from the pages of DC Comics, and is still an important part of the Dcau. When he started working with DC, Marvel animation was but a blip in the pop culture world, and the MCU did not even exist.

But still, it took him a little while to achieve a franchise that is now considered to be the most profitable.

When Gunn & Safran assumed roles as co-chairmen and co-CEOs of DC Studio, they declared a complete revamp of the old Dceu and revealed numerous projects, including live-action films, TV series, and animations.
While some projects like ‘Superman’ set for a 2025 release and ‘Creature Commandos’ are in production, details on others remain scarce, with occasional rumors and leaks hinting at casting or plot points. Among the highly anticipated shows were ‘Booster Gold’ and ‘Lanterns,’ and we’re excited to share some updates on them.

"Suicide Squad Isekai," premiering this July, bridges the worlds of DC Comics and anime. "Isekai" is a popular anime genre; meaning "another world" in Japanese, Isekai anime follows an everyman lead being transported to a magical realm, "Alice in Wonderland" style. This time, the "everyman" leads are Harley Quinn (played by Anna Nagase instead of Margot Robbie), Deadshot, Peacemaker, King Shark, and Clayface.
Wit Studio ("Attack on Titan") is producing "Suicide Squad Isekai," but the series is only happening thanks to Warner Bros. Japan. Variety recently reported that Warner Bros. plans for DC Comics-inspired anime are only beginning. Like Disney, Warner Bros. has noticed an audience appetite for anime and is responding to it.
James Gibbons, Warner Bros. Discovery president of Asia-Pacific, told Variety:

The DC Animated Universe is generally hailed as one of the better adaptations of superhero comics. While it was the definitive version of characters like Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman, some characters suffered a lot throughout the shows, and fans felt that they were slighted in their depictions. When there are so many characters to focus on, some end up falling by the wayside.

One such character was Green Lantern, be it Hal Jordan or Jon Stewart. Both Lanterns were instrumental parts of the teams they were on, but fans are pretty sure that they could have done better with these characters.

Actor Nathan Fillion recently found himself cast in movies like The Suicide Squad and Superman: Legacy. But back before these roles, many were eager to see Fillion in superhero movies in some form. However, there was one role fans linked him to that Fillion just couldn’t see himself playing.

It seemed it was only a matter of time before Fillion did a superhero feature. He already had good professional relationships with two filmmakers connected with Marvel movies. He worked alongside Avengers director Joss Whedon in the cult classic show Firefly. He was also good friends with Guardians of the Galaxy director James Gunn, who he did Slither and Super with.
At the time, Fillion shared that he didn’t do a Marvel movie because he was tied up with another franchise.

However, plans changed when it was revealed in April 2020 that Johns would produce a Green Lantern Corps series for HBO Max, indicating a shift in direction. Hollywood A-lister, Mark Wahlberg known for his action roles and dramatic turns, has had a long and successful career. But even the best actors have near misses. For him, that almost meant suiting up as a superhero in a film not exactly known for its critical acclaim.

With Lord and Miller’s proven track record of success in the animated superhero genre, James Gunn now wants them to helm a Dcu project. What’s more interesting is that fans have come up with some interesting ideas, too.

James Gunn has now become the ‘Kevin Feige’ of the new Dcu. Last year, he announced several DC projects that will be a part of his vision for the beginning of the Dcu moving forward. While Kevin Feige has the experience and achieved success over the years, Gunn is also a solid filmmaker and has never disappointed audiences with his work.

However, there is a stark difference between how they operate and their way of telling actors what to do to prepare for their roles. As pointed out by a popular scooper, Gunn seems to have an edge over Feige over one aspect in building his own DC universe.

This Blue Beetle article contains spoilers.
At the start of Blue Beetle’s second act, protagonist Jaime Reyes (Xolo Maridueña) asks an important question: “Who the hell was Blue Beetle?”
A lot of viewers wondered the same thing when the Warner Bros. movie came to theaters earlier this year and they’ll likely be asking it again now that the movie is streaming on Max. People don’t ask that same question of Superman, Batman, or Wonder Woman, but not because Blue Beetle is at best a C-lister in the DC Comics bullpen. Rather it’s because the man behind the Blue Beetle mask has changed several times since Charles Nicholas Wojtkoski debuted the character in 1939.
The big-screen adaptation introduces Blue Beetle as Jaime Reyes, who is a recent college grad forced to the superhero identity after receiving an alien scarab from Jenny Kord (Bruna Marquezine), the daughter of inventor Ted Kord,...

The DC Universe is abuzz with tantalizing rumors, setting fan forums and social media alight with speculations and hopes for upcoming releases. With whispers of fresh character dynamics and the introduction of enigmatic heroes, the Dcu might be on the verge of a narrative renaissance. While the film industry grapples with strikes and inevitable delays, the subreddit r/DCEULeaks has become the epicenter for intriguing leaks, providing fans with much-needed speculation fuel. Though these are still unconfirmed rumors, the sheer possibility of such developments makes it an electrifying time to be a DC aficionado.
‘Lanterns‘: A fresh spin on age-old heroes
The long-awaited Green Lantern series is finally setting its course with Chris Mundy, the genius behind “Ozark” and “Criminal Minds,” taking the reins as showrunner. The revamped narrative is set to offer a twist, presenting an older Hal Jordan mentoring a younger John Stewart, deviating from the original vision of them being contemporaries.

The early 2020s have been a pretty rough period for DC Studios so far. The last seven Dceu movies have all been box-office disappointments, and since 2022’s ‘The Batman,’ which is separated from Dceu, DC Studios hasn’t released a commercially successful movie. This year’s ‘Shazam! Fury of the Gods’ was this year’s first box office failure, with only $133.8 million grossed worldwide against a budget of $125 million. On top of that, we know that Dceu is facing a soft reboot. Therefore, Zachary Levi’s future as Shazam is under a big question mark.
Levi debuted as Shazam in the original ‘Shazam!’ movie, which was released in 2019 as a part of then-dc Films’ plan to focus more on standalone movies. The movie received positive reviews for its family story and sense of fun and grossed $367.7 million worldwide, which maybe doesn’t sound much, but it was enough to grant it a sequel,...

It’s been a week since ‘Blue Beetle,’ the newest DC movie, opened in theaters, and judging by the first weekend only, WB and DC Studios are listing this as their fourth DC flop in a row. 2022’s ‘The Batman’ remains the latest commercially successful DC movie, and it looks like it’s going to stay like that for a while now.
Despite the fact that ‘Blue Beetle’ is still very early in its theatrical run, grossing a little over $40 million worldwide for the opening weekend is already enough to call it a flop, particularly because ‘The Flash,’ another commercial disappointment for DC one and of the biggest box-office flops in history, grossed $139 million in its opening weekend.
At this point, the future of Xolo Maridueña as the Blue Beetle, despite the fact that he was born to play this role, is very uncertain, regardless of James Gunn’s promises about his future in Dcu,...

James Gunn and Peter Safran have taken the reins of the new DC Universe of movies and TV series, the new cinematic univese born from the ashes of the Dceu that began with 2013’s Man of Steel. Interestingly, the new Dcu will also kick off with the Last Son of Krypton, this time in Gunn’s upcoming Superman: Legacy, starring David Corenswet and Rachel Brosnahan. But although Superman: Legacy is set to be the Dcu’s first official installment, Xolo Maridueña’s Blue Beetle has been confirmed to be the “first” Dcu character.

“Superman: Legacy” writer-director and DC Studios co-chief James Gunn is expanding the new DC universe with three new actors joining the cast: Nathan Fillion (“Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3”) will play Guy Gardner, one of the figures known as Green Lantern; Isabela Merced (“Dora and the Lost City of Gold”) will play Hawkgirl; and Edi Gathegi (“X-Men: First Class”) will play Mister Terrific.
Gunn cast David Corenswet (“Hollywood”) as the titular Man of Steel two weeks ago, alongside “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” star Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
At a press presentation of the new DC Studios slate in January, producer and DC co-chief Peter Safran said the film will focus “on Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing. He is the embodiment of truth, justice and the American way. He is kindness in a world that thinks of kindness as old-fashioned.”

James Gunn has added three more names to cast of Superman: Legacy, including longtime collaborator Nathan Fillion as the Guy Gardner version of Green Lantern. Additionally, Isabela Merced has been cast as Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi will portray Mister Terrific.
Vanity Fair was the first to report the news of the trio’s castings.
Fillion, who appears in many of Gunn’s projects, already had a Dceu role as T.D.K. (The Detachable Kid) in The Suicide Squad. Considering how that character was left at the end of the film, there should be little concern over his new casting. As for the Green Lantern he’ll be portraying, Gardner is one a handful of Earth-based ring-slingers. Unlike the heroic Hal Jordan (played by Ryan Reynolds in the best-forgotten 2011 film) or fan-favorite John Stewart, Gardner’s abrasive personality makes his membership in the Lantern Corps contention. Nathan Fillion has joined the cast of “Superman: Legacy” as Green Lantern’s Guy Gardner, along with Isabela Merced who will play Hawkgirl, and Edi Gathegi, who will play Mister Terrific, according to an insider with knowledge of the project.
The trio joins a growing cast for James Gunn’s DC reboot that stars David Corenswet as the Man of Steel, and Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane.
Gardner was introduced in Green Lantern (Vol. 2) #59 by John Broome and Gil Kane. Gardner was initially a second-rate Green Lantern who was passed over in favor of Hal Jordan. However, he later became one of Earth’s greatest protectors and a significant member of the Justice League. Despite his often abrasive personality, Gardner is devoted to the Corps and is a vaunted member of the Green Lantern Honor Guard.

Whether it’s using her lasso to get the truth out of her enemies or her gauntlets capable of trapping energy and using it to her advantage, Wonder Woman has some pretty cool abilities. And that’s not even getting into her crazy speed and jumping ability. While we may not have gotten her invisible jet, the other staples of Wonder Woman are all there, so join us on today’s DC Revisited as we dive into Patty Jenkins’ Wonder Woman.
While we may have finally received a Wonder Woman via Zack Snyder’s Batman v Superman, the project had actually been in development for quite some time. Comedy director Ivan Reitman was even attached to the film as a producer in 1996. Then in ’99, Jon Cohen was tapped by now-producer Joel Silver to write a Wonder Woman script. He was even eyeing Sandra Bullock to star in the title role.

Even before James Gunn announced the upcoming slate for the newly-launched DC Studios that he heads with Peter Safran, we knew that superhero television was about to change. For years, DC succeeded on television where it had arguably struggled on film, thanks to the hugely successful Arrowverse on CW. From the gritty series Arrow that launched in 2012, the Arrowverse grew into a massive superhero soap opera, making up for the absence of the DC Trinity with fan-favorites like the Flash and the Atom, and rehabilitated D-listers like Wild Dog and Vibe.
But for all of its popularity and success, the Arrowverse is nearly over. With The Flash in its ninth and final season, and Superman & Lois officially not part of the same universe, the massive franchise seems to be at an end. And although Gunn has been clear that the DC Studios slate will not only include television offerings but...

David Harbour has revealed that he keeps a framed photo of Hellboy in his closet, offering him a chance to “remember where [he] came from.”
In a recent video for Architectural Digest, David Harbour took viewers on a tour of the Brooklyn apartment he shares with his wife, Lily Allen, who he married in 2020. When they get to David Harbour’s nearly all-black closet–admittedly smaller than Allen’s–he reaches past a couple hats and tells viewers, “Just whenever I’m feeling particularly good about myself…I like to always remember where I came from.” Harbour then pulls out a small framed photo of himself as Hellboy, who he played in the 2019 reboot. Allen can be seen laughing in the background, also apparently quite aware of how awful Hellboy is.

The duo is prepping and implementing a long-term interconnected story for the iconic franchise and characters, and today announced the beginning of "Chapter 1" focused on "Gods and Monsters" with five new films and five television series for HBO Max already in development.
"As we craft the plan for DC Studios, we are thrilled to share with fans the first 10 stories they can expect from the unified DC Universe featuring some of our most well-known characters as well as the next generation of marquee characters," said Safran.

The Green Lantern TV series is dead. Long live the Green Lantern series.
After years of development and redevelopment, an HBO Max series based on the DC superheroes from Greg Berlanti, the longtime steward of DC’s TV shows, has been scrapped. In its place, a new series is being developed, titled Lanterns, which is acting as a foundational show under the plans from newly installed DC Studios heads, James Gunn and Peter Safran.
“Greg’s vision was more of a space opera that he wanted to do,” said Safran during a presentation of the new DC slate on the Warner Bros. Studios lot Monday. “Our vision is more True Detective, more of a terrestrial-based investigation story. We all agreed to part ways.”
In the works since at least 2019, Green Lantern was touted to be the most expensive DC show ever made, with multiple stories sprawling across time and space.

After teasing that he and fellow DC Studios CEO Peter Safran today began talking up some of the movies and shows we can expect. And that includes new versions of Batman, Superman, Supergirl, Green Lantern and more. Watch the announcement here, and read the full breakdown below.
Gunn started by confirming that the existing DC movies still to be released — Shazam! Fury Of The Gods, The Flash, Blue Beetle and Aquaman And The Lost Kingdom – will all still make it to cinemas, with The Flash and its universe-rebooting nature proving key to helping to usher in the new paradigm. They will lead into what Gunn and Safran are calling 'Gods And Monsters', effectively the first chunk of the first part of the plan. It'll be a mix of TV (both animated and live-action) and movies, with games tying in as needed.
So what can we expect? Gunn talked up 10 initial titles.
