Exclusive: Britain’s biggest film studios are preparing for crunch talks with a government agency amid fears that a so-called “studio tax” could “torpedo” the UK’s booming production industry.
Pinewood is among an informal task force of UK studios that has been working with the British Film Commission (Bfc) to avert potentially huge increases in property taxes. Representatives for the studios are due to meet with the Valuation Office Agency (Voa) this week to set out their concerns.
The Voa has redrafted UK studios’ “rateable values,” an assessment of the amount a property would rent for if it were available on the open market. Rateable values are used to calculate business rates, a tax on non-domestic properties. The higher the rateable value, the higher the business rate.
Pinewood Studios’ rateable value will increase fourfold from £3.95M to £16.2M (19.7M) under valuations set to be introduced by the Voa in April.

Monsters can be literal or metaphorical, but you’ll be hard-pressed to find which are which in the anthology horror series “Monsterland.”
“Monsterland” is a Hulu original horror anthology released on October 2, 2020. “Monsterland” doesn’t feature monsters in the traditional sense. There is no vicious monster on the loose killing people. Though the atmosphere is eerie, the series doesn’t rely on jump scares to deliver horror.
Instead, “Monsterland” will slowly inject horror into your mind and leave you unsettled for hours after. What’s “Monsterland” all about, and where can you watch it? Read on to find out.
Where Can You Watch “Monsterland?”
The series is absent from the big networks, such as Netflix and Amazon Prime, because Hulu has decided to keep “Monsterland” exclusive to its network. You can watch it with any Hulu plan.
What Is “Monsterland” About?
Instead of making your heart pump faster, “Monsterland” puts you into existential dread.

Arriving on digital platforms today is For the Sake of Vicious, a gnarly and tense home invasion thriller from filmmakers Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen that lives up to its memorable name (this writer highly recommends checking it out). Daily Dead recently had the opportunity to speak with the directing duo of the film, and they discussed how the project was initially borne out of their own anger and frustrations, their experiences collaborating with their core actors—Lora Burke, Nick Smyth, and Colin Paradine—as well as the challenges they faced during their ambitious and intimate shoot.
Great to speak with you both today. Something that I really appreciated about this film is that it is very cinematic, and yet there's something about it that almost feels like it could be a stage play, because of how intimate the filmmaking feels and all the different storytelling elements at play. We can tell it's been a long day when Romina (Lora Burke) gets home from the hospital where she works. All she wants to do is settle down with her son, who is being looked after elsewhere, and have a peaceful evening, but she's barely through the door before she realises that there's something very, very wrong. There's a man lying on the floor bleeding and crying out in pain. Then the perpetrator appears, seizing her to stifle her panic, and he's somebody she knows.
It's going to be a long night.
The set-up for Gabriel Carrer and Reese Eveneshen's latest film is fairly simple. Chris (Nick Smyth) has injured Alan (Colin Paradine), and wants Romina to keep him alive until he can finish extracting information. Whilst this goes strongly against Romina's instincts as a health and care professional (and human being), she can't bring herself to condemn Chris because she knows.

A Canadian film, from filmmakers Gabriel Carrer (The Demolisher) and Reese Eveneshen (Defective), this indie title brings a biker gang into a tiny kitchen for a vigilante beatdown. Carrer's synth' score helps amplify some of the film's tension. Meanwhile, the pacing only takes off near the final half hour. In the meantime, the film's topic is a bit dire and early scenes are constrained by the simple setting. For the Sake of Vicious will entertain a few patient indie thriller fans out there. The story could have used a bit more meat on the bone. However, the film is centered...

"This is my house." Raven Banner has released an official promo trailer for a brutal Canadian action horror film titled For the Sake of Vicious, which is currently being sold at the (virtual) Cannes Market this summer. It hasn't premiered anywhere yet, but it looks like it will play very well at genre festivals this fall. The film is about a single mother who returns from a late shift on Halloween to find a maniac hiding out in her home with a hostage. But once she finds out what's going on, more people start to come to her home. Lora Burke stars, joined by Nick Smyth, Colin Paradine, and James Fler. Yow this looks extra violent and twisted. This is an intense, full-on red band trailer so watch out! There's no nudity, but it is extremely bloody and brutal. One of those home invasion horrors that flips and becomes a vengeance flick in the end.

To be fair, I’m sure the title didn’t come from the director himself, probably someone who was releasing the movie decided that. There seems to many horror movies with the same title or something very similar and it just screams run-of-the-mill, low budget genre title. This movie called Covenant doesn’t throw up much in the way of surprises.
It is low budget and although there’s a variety of reasons I can tell this, the main one is the awful – and I mean student-level – ‘special’ effects. I have no idea how to create CGI...

Production began this week, here in Toronto, on a new thriller called Daughters from Craig David Wallace. This will be the sophomore feature film from the co-creator and showrunner of the series Todd and the Book of Pure Evil, though we get the sense that Daughters is a different ball of wax. It follows a single mother stalked by a vengeful couple who believe she’s responsible for their daughter’s murder. Daughters stars Lora Burke, Kristen MacCulloch (The Vault and upcoming Psycho Goreman), Nick Smyth, and Colin Paradine. It will be the debut of Tessa Kozma. Daughters is being produced by a number of friends...

Lora Burke plays nurse and single mother whose home comes under attack over Halloween.
Raven Banner has lined up an October 4 start of production on For The Sake Of Vicious, which the Toronto-based genre specialist represents for worldwide sales.
Avi Federgreen is producing the action horror and Marvin Waxman serves as executive producer with James Fler, Michael Paszt, and Andrew Hunt of Raven Banner.
For The Sake Of Vicious is described as “relentless, punch-in-your-face action horror” and stars Lora Burke as a nurse and single mother who returns from a late shift on Halloween to find a maniac hiding out with a hostage.

Well well, it would seem that someone has been watching a little too much RoboCop (or maybe read too much Judge Dredd?) and decided that they had an idea for a sequel, expanding on the concept of the Ocp and the police state they wanted to bring in with the Ed-209 bots… only no-one would a) let them make a sequel; and b) no-one would give them a budget to make a film anywhere near as good either.
So what do we end up with? Defective. A film that loving lives up to its title.
In the near future, the corporation S.E.A., has implemented North America’s first and only police state. Uniformed, anonymous Preservers of Peace investigate,...

(In honor of Banned Books Week (September 30-October 6, 2012) we are reprinting this list from the Comic Book Legal Defense Fund, and will be reprinting lots of stuff from them over the coming week to highlight their efforts. Donate now! —Cm)
Banned Books Week is upon us, and it’s telling that the event is more relevant than ever in its 30th year. Given their visual nature and the rampantly held misconception that comic books are for children, comics are among the most challenged and banned books in libraries and schools. Let’s take a look at some frequently challenged and banned comics…
Amazing Spider-Man: Revelations by J. Michael Straczynski, John Romita, Jr., and Scott Hanna
• Location of key challenge: A middle-school library in Millard, Nebraska
• Reason challenged: Sexual overtones

Charlie: Do you know the film, "The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoise?" When I first saw that title, I though, "Finally, someone is going to tell the truth about the bourgeoisie." What a disappointment. It would be hard to imagine a less fair or accurate portrait.
Cynthia: Well of course, Bunuel is a surrealist. Despising the bourgeoisie is part of their credo.
Nick: (disgusted) Where do they get off?
Charlie: The truth is the bourgeoisie does have a lot of charm.
Nick: Of course it does, the surrealists were just a bunch of social climbers.
- Whit Stillman, "Metropolitan"
Famously dubbed the “the Wasp Woody Allen” and the “Dickens of people with too much inner life” by reviewers and critics when his comedy-of-manners indie pictures arrived in the early 1990s, Whit Stillman’s ironic, clever and urbane examinations of upward and downward social mobility and the shallow concerns and preoccupations of the young,...
