In the new Whitney Houson biopic I Wanna Dance with Somebody, Houston’s mother has police escort her daughter from her home (in front of her young daughter, Bobbi Kristina) after finding Houston in a drug-fueled stupor following her father’s death. We next see Houston in tranquil recovery at a rehab center, and later, a recreation of her emotional comeback performance on The Oprah Winfrey Show in 2009. The film excises most of the 2000s from Houston’s story, including her starring role in 2005’s disturbing reality series Being Bobby Brown.

Plot: The life of Whitney Houston (Naomi Ackie), from her early days as an up-and-comer to her eventual run as a superstar and drug-fuelled decline.
Review: I Wanna Dance with Somebody is a mixed bag as far as music biopics go. While it follows the familiar beats and doesn’t shy away from the darker side of Houston’s life and career, the film is perhaps too devoted to Houston’s music to work as a compelling drama. Of the 144-minute running time, conservatively, forty (or more) minutes are devoted to lengthy restagings of Houston’s live performances. Given that Houston’s real vocals were used, that means star Noami Ackie is given little to do but mime to these performances. While Houston’s once-in-a-generation voice obviously can’t be imitated, it leaves Ackie too little time to inhabit the part effectively.

Is this really unprofessional?” Naomi Ackie has made a beeline for the wine. But wouldn’t you need a drink if everyone was about to see you play Whitney Houston? Ackie has been nearly famous for a few years now, a British actor best known for playing a resistance warrior in Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker, then Lena Waithe’s uncertain wife in the Master of None spin-off Moments in Love. Today, though, she’s plastered on the wall of every Tube station I pass en route to meeting her. “I’m so sorry about that,” she winces, as we pour two glasses of emergency rosé. Ackie used to pray for the day when her name and face would be on a movie poster. But now, with her phone inundated with texts from friends and family about the ads for I Wanna Dance with Somebody – tagline: “Naomi Ackie is...

We’ve been a fan of The Crab, one of the WildCard entries on season five of “The Masked Singer,” since he made his debut at the end of episode 4 on March 31 with a moving version of Bill Withers classic “Ain’t No Sunshine.” The Crab returned the following week and changed it up with a cover of the Rick James hit “Give It to Me Baby.” That got him a spot in the Super 8 competing in a special two-hour edition of the show on April 21.
We’ve gone back and watched both performances by the Crab and reviewed all the clues from his video packages. We are convinced that the judges are wrong with their guesses that the Crab is Johnny Gill or Lenny Kravitz. Keep reading for “The Masked Singer” spoilers, including the true identity of the Crab.

Bobby Brown is sharing his candid thoughts on son Bobby Brown Jr.'s tragic passing. The 52-year-old R&b singer was a Red Table Talk guest on Wednesday, April 14, where he spoke with co-hosts Willow Smith, Jada Pinkett Smith and Adrienne Banfield-Norris about painful moments from his life over the years. This included the death of his 28-year-old son, who died Nov. 13 from an overdose of alcohol, cocaine and the opioid fentanyl, according to the autopsy report. Bobby has also dealt with the loss of daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, who died at age 22 in July 2015 following seven months in a coma after being found unconscious in a...

The Crab is one of the best vocalists on this season of “The Masked Singer” but he didn’t make his first appearance till the very end of episode 4 on March 31. He showed off his soaring voice with a heartfelt cover of the Bill Withers classic “Ain’t No Sunshine.” The Crab, who is the second of the Wild Card entries, returns to compete against Black Swan, Chameleon and Piglet in the Group B final on April 7.
Last week, there was no way that the four judges were going to send Crab packing after such a short stay. Instead, Grandpa Monster got the boot, and he was revealed by guest host Niecy Nash to be YouTube sensation Logan Paul.

The second of “The Masked Singer” wildcards, Crab, made his first appearance at the end of episode 4 on March 31. This season 5 twist shakes up the game with new contenders for the Golden Mask competing against the original slate of celebrity contestants. Crab certainly sounded like a winner with his toe-tapping cover of the Bill Withers classic “Ain’t No Sunshine.” The Crab said he chose this song as “a tribute to the family members that have gone before me. After all the darkness, it’s time to finally let the light back in.”
The four judges lavished him with praise for his performance, which had them on their feet. We loved their enthusiasm but think that they are wrong with their guesses that the Crab is Johnny Gill or Lenny Kravitz.
We’ve been doing some digging and have a good idea as to which famous face is hiding beneath that crusty mask.

Attorneys for Bobby Brown and the estate of Bobbi Kristina Brown have filed suit in a New York court over the documentary “Whitney: Can I Be Me,” alleging that Showtime, the BBC and several other defendants violated their rights by improperly using footage from the production of the 2005 reality series “Being Bobby Brown.”
Brown’s lawsuit, filed in U.S. District Court’s New York southern district, asks for $2 million from defendants Passion Pictures, Tracey Baker-Simmons, Wanda Shelley, B2 Entertainment and Simmons Shelley Entertainment, as well as Showtime and the BBC.

Contracts or releases they did sign for the filming of the lone season of Bravo’s “Being Bobby Brown” in 2005 didn’t carry over for any other usage, the claim maintains.

Bobby Brown says a 2017 documentary about his late wife Whitney Houston used more than a half-hour’s worth of footage of him and his children without his consent — and that’s good enough for a lawsuit. The one-time New Edition and solo R&B hitmaker has filed a multimillion-dollar lawsuit against Showtime and the BBC over their film Whitney: Can I Be Me.
“The film contains footage that Brown and [his late daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown] has never consented to have released,” according the suit filed Tuesday in New York District Court (read it here). “Brown and [his late daughter] appear in the film for a substantial period of time, in excess of thirty (30) minutes. … Brown never signed or executed a release for the airing of the material that appears in the film.”
The filing also says: “The film contains images of [Brown’s] other children, Landon Brown, Robert ‘Bobby’ Brown Jr. and Laprincia Brown as minor children.

Bobby Brown promoted Bet’s “The Bobby Brown Story” at a place with a difficult history for him: The Beverly Hilton, the hotel where his ex-wife Whitney Houston died in 2012.
“The spirit of my ex-wife is probably still here,” Brown said, when asked how it felt to be in the hotel. “It just feels good to be here and to promote this movie.”
As Brown noted, he did not choose the location. The panel was part of an annual summer gathering by the Television Critics Association, which is almost always held at the hotel.

“The public record is wrong,” proclaimed Bobby Brown.
The R&B singer and former New Edition band member was fielding questions Friday morning at the Television Critics Association press tour for his new two-part Bet miniseries “The Bobby Brown Story” when one journalist asked about the domestic violence 911 call that had been called in the midst of a domestic incident between Brown, who had allegedly abused his ex-wife, the late Whitney Houston.
“There [were] no violent incidents between me and Whitney,” he claimed. “You’re mistaken. You’re completely wrong.”
Puzzled by his denial that a 911 call that is part of public record ever happened, another reporter cited the particulars of the call, detailing the date and report about the one-inch bruise seen on Houston’s cheek. That’s when Brown doubled down and declared that that version of reality was false: “The public record is wrong.”
