When Emma Stone, star of Disney’s Cruella and Searchlight’s Poor Things, introduced CEO Bob Iger at the company’s Upfronts presentation this week – the first time that the former TV chief had been on stage at the advertising rodeo in 30 years – it was clear that this is no longer just a TV event.
“To say a lot has changed since 1994 would be an incredible understatement and I’m not just talking about the color of my hair, or my fashion choices,” Iger said.
Stars such as Ryan Reynolds, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz, Reese Witherspoon, Will Ferrell and Jake Gyllenhaal were all highly visible presences across the week to promote their recent and upcoming feature films.
It marked a sea change for the Madison Avenue set, who were previously treated to a cavalcade of television stars promoting the small-screen, usually fresh from the broadcast pilot process. Unlike April’s CinemaCon,...

Imagine “Wicked” without wigs, hair, or makeup. Or “The Lion King.” Or “The Phantom of the Opera.” Or “Cats.” Frankly, it would all be a bit bizarre and lackluster. None of those shows — in terms of looks, character, and story — would make sense without the incredible wigs, hair, and makeup (Wham) featured in them, which is why it is so strange that Wham artists are not recognized at major theater awards organizations.
There is, however, a campaign trying to get this bizarre omission rectified, and Victoria Fenton, the founder of the campaign Recognize Wham, has set up a Change petition to raise awareness of this issue. I spoke to Fenton, who is a freelance wig maker and a Wigs, Hair, and Makeup Assistant for “Mrs. Doubtfire,” as well as Wigs, Hair, and Makeup Supervisor Alice Hardy, to discuss this campaign, which aims to get awards groups such as the Tonys...

And nobody in all of Scotland is ever gonna bring her down. That’s the thesis, more or less, of Macbeth (An Undoing), a production from the Royal Lyceum Theatre Edinburgh now at Brooklyn’s Theater for a New Audience, that strives to do for Lady Macbeth (Nicole Cooper) what Wicked did for the Wicked Witch of the West. But Zinnie Harris’s play never defies gravity in its laborious quest to reimagine and center Lady Macbeth’s story.
Perhaps Harris hasn’t seen a decent production of Shakespeare’s Macbeth. The smart ones articulate without textual revision what Macbeth (An Undoing) goes to such unsubtle lengths to declaim: Lady Macbeth is the more powerful, ingenious, compelling character, and it’s her coolly competent ambition, not her husband’s, that motors this play. No argument there.
What especially bothers Harris isn’t the ferocity but the fragility in the original Lady Macbeth’s villainy,...

There’s no place like CinemaCon for Universal to debut enchanting new footage for Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of Wicked! On Wednesday, the studio dropped a house on the CinemaCon crowd at Caesar’s Palace in Las Vegas, helping Elphaba, the Wicked Witch of the West, to tell her side of a misunderstood story.
During Universal’s CinemaCon presentation, the studio surprised the crowd by activating lanyards and roses given out before the presentation. Like magic, the objects lit up, flashing different colors as the theater filled with music. When the Great and Powerful Oz showed up, the lights interacted with his entrance. Jeff Goldblum is Oz, and he took the stage to introduce the film. “I’ll be a ringtail flying monkey if that’s not the biggest flying cranium I’ve seen in my life,” Goldblum quipped about his character.

“Wicked” director Jon M. Chu confirmed in a new interview with Vanity Fair that his leading ladies Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo sang live on set, similar to how other movie musicals such as “La La Land” and “Les Miserables” were filmed. Studios often rely on pre-recorded tracks when filming musical numbers, which requires performers to lip-synch along on set. Grande and Erivo were not interested in this traditional method.
“These are live vocals,” Chu said. “When we were shooting it, those girls were like, ‘Fuck the pre-records. We’re going live.’”
Chu remembered telling them that singing live on set meant “there’s going to be a lot of wind in your air pipes. Is that okay?” He said the actors responded with confidence, saying, “Yeah. That’s what we do.”
Based on the blockbuster Broadway musical of the same name, “Wicked” is a prequel to “The Wizard of Oz...

If coughing blood into a napkin is “movie for dying,” Ariana Grande and Bowen Yang pairing up for a musical mashup is “Saturday Night Live for funny.” And funny it was!
In this weekend’s spoof of Moulin Rouge, the 2001 film starring Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor, musical guest Grande joined Yang in a never-before-seen, uncut version of the film’s iconic love medley. The extended mashup started off the same as the actual film’s, but quickly segued into a particularly giggly Yang and Grande duetting a bizarre collection of mostly unrelated, unromantic songs including “Man! I Feel Like a Woman!

Ariana Grande‘s estranged husband, Dalton Gomez, has been keeping himself busy “in positive ways” since his split with the pop star became public.

A separate source tells Et that the luxury real estate agent has been “throwing himself into work and working harder than ever since his split from Ariana. He is trying to stay distracted and keep himself busy in positive ways.”

Chicago – Yet another famous musical version of the final days of Jesus Christ is celebrating its 50th Anniversary as a film. “Godspell” began as a college project, moved to off-Broadway, released the film adaptation the same year as its cousin film “Jesus Christ Superstar” and had one actor go through all the iterations, while scoring a hit single with the song “Day by Day” … she is Robin Lamont.
Robin Lamont of “Godspell”
She went through all the steps of “Godspell” – even premiering in the Broadway stage version in 1976. Lamont was a student at Carnegie Mellon when a normal class assignment would connect her to the musical for six years. “Godspell” began in Pittsburgh in 1970 as a staged thesis for a Masters Degree by John-Michael Tebelak. It had a whole different set of songs and was structurally different than the show that opened Off-Off Broadway in 1971. After rejecting the original songs,...

Jeff Goldblum is off to be the Wizard, the Wonderful Wizard of Oz. The actor is in talks to join the cast of the upcoming “Wicked” films, as Variety reported.
A source close to the project tells IndieWire that Goldblum is still in early talks.
If confirmed, Goldblum will play the Wizard, depicted in the original Stephen Schwartz stage musical as the beloved but mysterious ruler of the Land of Oz, capable of incredible feats of magic and power. Joel Grey originated the part in the Broadway production based on Gregory Maguire’s 1995 novel “Wicked: The Life and Times of the Wicked Witch of the West.” Of course, the character of the Wizard originates in L. Frank Baum’s classic 1900 children’s novel “The Wonderful Wizard of Oz” and has been portrayed onscreen numerous times, most notably by Frank Morgan in the 1939 MGM film adaptation of Baum’s original work.

Maren Morris’ Broadway dreams are on the way to coming true! On Thursday, the 32-year-old country music superstar revealed that she got a call back for Wicked, after sending in her self-tape.
“I got a callback for Wicked,” she wrote in green letters on her Instagram Stories. “I am in tears. What the hell,” she continued before ending it with a witch-hat emoji.
“The Bones” songstress shared an up-close reaction with her fans in a series of emotional videos posted on her Instagram. “Ya’ll, I literally don’t even care — yes I do — if I go beyond this callback,” she said through tears as she rocked sunglasses.
“Because this is like, 14-year-old Maren’s getting to achieve something that was never in reach, like it just never felt possible.”

It's 40 years since Multi-Coloured Swap Shop made its television debut and kick-started the Saturday morning kids' TV slot...
Imagine the excitement - it's just before 9.30am on Saturday 2nd October 1976. It's almost like Christmas has come early, such is the anticipation. The nation's kids, who hitherto got their kicks at the Saturday morning pictures, settle in front of their television screens and press the button marked 'BBC1'. Those who read their parents' Radio Times know a new show is about to start with Radio 1 Breakfast Show DJ Noel Edmonds at the helm. 28 year old Noel is cool and down with the kids. Tom Baker and Elisabeth Sladen - the Doctor and Sarah Jane from Doctor Who - are to be the first star guests, and you can actually speak to them live by telephone! The TV set warms up and the familiar blue and yellow BBC...

From trashing the Terminator to praising the baboon – here's a selection of the stories you chose as your favourite in 2009
Anything by Lucy Mangan, because of the hooting hilarity that invariably ensues (Wookey Hole wants to hire a witch. Well, I can cackle ... G2 shortcuts, 9 July) – Sadie Clifford, Stockport
The greatest named place in Britain is inviting applicants for possibly the country's greatest job – to become the modern-day counterpart to the legendary witch of Wookey Hole.
The Somerset caves have long been home to a witch turned to stone in the middle ages by a Benedictine monk with a flair for that kind of thing called Father Bernard. Now, however, the popular tourist attraction is in need of someone with a wider skill set than that possessed by the average vaguely person-shaped rocky outcropping, and is advertising for a living witch to take up residence in the caves at weekends,...
