You know the hair. The glasses. The voice. The sheer talent. Richard Ayoade spoke to HeyUGuys about The Double, which is out now on DVD and Blu Ray. Other subjects included The It Crowd, a new book, Ingmar Bergman, and trying not to bore audiences.
I’d like to start by going back a little bit to your first feature, which was obviously Submarine. I think for many people, they didn’t realise that a comedy actor was also going to be a great director. So I was wondering, did you feel that was a liberating experience?
Erm, I don’t know. I’d directed TV before – I directed a show called Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace, and music videos and things, so the main thing at the time [was I] felt the writing of something that was much longer than anything I’d done, and the structure of doing a film that has ninety minutes to it.

When Richard Ayoade directed Submarine he gave us this slightly quirky tale of teen love, it was all a little fluffy and silly but very good. Moving onto The Double if you saw the trailer you could already see that it was something very different. Taking Jesse ‘soon to be Lex Luthor’ Eisenberg and giving him a nightmarish doppelgänger we are invited into a world where being nobody can get you replaced.
Simon James (Jesse Eisenberg) is nobody, he goes around the world unnoticed, ignored at work and not even noticed by the women of his dreams. When a new worker James Simon arrives James is the only one to notice that he is an exact replica of himself. As...

Richard Ayoade is quickly establishing himself as one of the more interesting young directors working today. The Londoner gained loads of fans as a performer on quirky Brit TV shows like "The Mighty Boosh" and "The It Crowd," and his 2010 directorial debut "Submarine" gained plenty of fans after its Toronto Film Festival premiere.
His latest film, "The Double," takes a Dostoyevsky novella and turns it on its head, creating a quirky, cerebral-yet-darkly funny take on the drudgery of work and the promise of love. Star Jesse Eisenberg is perfectly cast as both sides of the doppelgänger, carefully fine-tuning his performance to create two unique characters who share more than just the same face.
Moviefone spoke to the director and star during Tiff, discussing everything from the source material to the challenge of playing two very dichotomous characters.

Editor's Note: This post is presented in partnership with Time Warner Cable Movies On Demand in support of May's Indie Film Month. This review was originally published during the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival. "The Double" is currently playing in select theaters and is available to view On Demand. "The Double" is based on a short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, but there's a lot more than the sensibilities of the Russian literary giant hanging over this grimly amusing picture. British director and comedian Richard Ayoade's follow-up to his stylized coming-of-age tale "Submarine," the abstract drama owes an obvious debt to "Brazil," but also borrows liberally from the likes of "1984," the labyrinthine plotting of a Kafka story and the outmoded aesthetics eighties computer commercials, while maintaining a deadpan stillness that calls to mind Finnish director Aki Kaurismaki. Yet the familiar elements of "The Double," which Ayoade co-wrote with Avi Korine, coalesce into a.

In only two films Richard Ayoade has proven to be one of the most talented young minds in the world of cinema today. With his first film Submarine he provided new life to the world of coming of age tales by crafting a film that was unique and heartfelt. His latest film The Double is rather a hard one to quantify. It is this roaming amalgamation of different cinematic features that should not go together, yet strangely do. There is a distinct Orwellian tone spliced with David Lynch sense of weirdness. Ayoade avoids creating too overbearing of a mood by adding in a dry comedic wit reminiscent of Wes Anderson’s fast paced humor. Within these familiar qualities is an...

In just under a month, Richard Ayoade's "The Double" will take you into a retro-future-punk world where there are two Jesse Eisenberg's and yet no one manages to confuse the two. In fact, one is smooth and confident, while the other is meek and anonymous, and the actor gets great mileage out of both parts in the film that hilarious and wonderfully put together. And now you can find out how it was all done. Ayoade recently stopped by New Directors/New Films festival in New York City, and spent thirty minutes following the screening of the film talking about the ins and outs of his work. The self-effacing filmmaker discussed working with Avi Korine on the screenplay, adapting the novella by Fyodor Dostoevsky, transitioning from his main gig as a comedy actor to his more serious turn as a director and so much more. Thoughtful and soft-spoken,...

Director: Richard Ayoade; Screenwriters: Richard Ayoade; Starring: Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Chris O'Dowd, Paddy Considine, Avi Korine; Running time: 93 mins; Certificate: 15
Based on Fyodor Dostoevsky's classic 1846 novella, Richard Ayoade's stunning take on The Double cements his reputation as a director of distinct style and absorbing substance following his impressive debut Submarine. He creates a nightmarish world full of dream logic that's simultaneously seductive and claustrophobic, mirroring the split personality (and body) of Jesse Eisenberg's disturbed protagonist.
The basic premise is a simple but intriguing one, as lonely, unappreciated office worker Simon (Eisenberg) is driven slowly insane by the appearance of his doppelgänger James (also Eisenberg). This lookalike is the polar opposite of Simon in terms of personality, wooing his crush Hannah (Mia Wasikowska) and dazzling his superiors with plagiarised work. As resentment grows and tensions soar, Simon feels increasingly compelled to betray his meek nature and take action.

If you’re a fan of literary adaptations then no doubt you’ll currently have your head stuck in a copy of Joyce Maynard’s emotional coming-of-age novel Labor Day, Nick Hornby’s heart-warming suicide drama A Long Way Down, or maybe even Veronica Roth’s debut dystopian Divergent. What we’re looking forward to most, however, is Richard Ayoade’s upcoming adaptation of Russian author Fyodor Dostoyevsky’s dark comedy novella, The Double. With an adapted screenplay written by Ayoade himself alongside fellow scribe Avi Korine, this is his first film since the hugely successful Submarine.
Starring Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska as the two leads, the story follows a man driven insane after finding out his life and identity is being assumed by a doppelgänger. Richard Ayoade shot to fame as Moss in The It Crowd but it was Submarine, his debut behind the camera, that won him critical acclaim. As his new film, The Double, is released, he talks about pride, performing and giving up his pop dreams
The premise of Fyodor Dostoevsky's 1846 novella The Double is simple but ingenious: a man lives an entirely unremarkable existence until one day his exact doppelganger shows up. This incongruous situation fast becomes insufferable for two reasons: first, the new guy is slick where he is stammering, popular where he's forgettable, Day-Glo to his beige; and, second, because no one else notices any likeness at all between the pair of them.
The Double, it's said, is meant as an allegory: the straight man is Dostoevsky in real life, shy and often awkward; the arriviste is the author 2.0, the person he sometimes wished he was, who is quick-witted and irresistible to women.

Today, a small movie called Enemy opened in limited release, starring Jake Gyllenhaal and, well…Jake Gyllenhaal. In May, another small flick called The Double comes out, and that one stars Jesse Eisenberg alongside, you guessed it…Jesse Eisenberg. 2014 seems to be the year of the doppelganger, in addition to biblical epics as I mentioned a week or so ago. These are acting showcases through and through, so could Oscar bite for one or both of them? Honestly, I think they’re both too offbeat and weird for Academy attention, so instead of doing specific preview pieces on them and just going through the motions of talking about a likely to be ignored pair of films, I wanted to sort of discuss both of them a bit here in this sort of an article. These could be independent contenders for other awards, so it’s important to give the pair...

In Richard Ayoade's new film, The Double, Eisenberg plays two versions of the same character. Is it a case of art imitating life?
I'd felt some trepidation in the lead-up to my interview with Jesse Eisenberg. Throughout his promotional duties for last year's magic thriller Now You See Me, he was sporadically spiky; most notable was the video in which he mocked a young female interviewer for writing questions on her hands, then told her not to cry until the interview was over so that he wouldn't look responsible for her tears. There was also the voxpop in which, having been asked about his favourite things to do in Toronto, he replied sardonically: "Oh, you can read about it on my blog, Jesse's Guide To Toronto, where I list the top 4,500 things that I really like about the city."

One of the many indie films we really think deserves to break out this year is the latest feature from British filmmaker/actor/comedian Richard Ayoade, a funky dystopian sci-fi dark comedy based on Dostoyevsky's The Double, starring Jesse Eisenberg. The film premiered at Tiff last year and we've been promoting it with reviews, trailers, interviews and plenty of other posters in the past, but this new poster is the best one yet. This new UK poster for The Double has a very minimalistic, artistic feel to it, like it was hand-drawn. A single ray of light shines down across a city on one man. It's impressive, and I'm glad it's an official poster. Check out this latest poster for Richard Ayoade's The Double, direct from IMPAwards via Live for Films. Richard Ayoade’s Submarine is easily one of the most memorable directorial debuts in recent years, and his sophomore effort, The Double, sees him returning behind the camera with another brilliant comedy.
This time around, things are darker in tone, adapting Dostoyevsky’s classic novella for the big screen.
In recent months, we’ve been treated to a handful of teaser trailers, showcasing the eerie nature of the doppelgänger story wonderfully. And with less than two months before it arrives on our shores, StudioCanal have launched the first full-length trailer over on Yahoo Movies.

It has been just a few days since we last got a look at Richard Ayoade’s second directorial effort, The Double. But while that was a teaser, this is the new full trailer for the film, which finds Jesse Eisenberg having some double trouble. Take a look via Yahoo. Eisenberg handles the dual role of Simon James and James Simon. The former is a nerdy, unimpressive drone whose unsatisfying life is thrown into chaos by the sudden arrival of the latter, his doppelganger. This copy is actually funnier, sexier and much more confident than poor Simon, and soon the new version is creeping (or rather, marching confidently) into all areas of Simon’s life, including his job and the affections of his dream girl, Hannah (Mia Wasikowska).Drawing from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novella, Ayoade wrote the script with Avi Korine and scored a cast that includes Sally Hawkins, Wallace Shawn,...

Lately it seems like we've been doubly been seeing double. In the teaser trailer - titled '2 Snakes' - a voice is heard warning Simon that his double (James) will take control of his life.
The movie - which brings the events of the novella forward to the present day - follows Simon, a government clerk who becomes convinced that his doppelgänger has stolen his name, face and identity.
Mia Wasikowska, Noah Taylor and Ayoade's Submarine star Yasmin Paige feature in the supporting cast for The Double. Ayoade wrote the script for the film with Avi Korine.

With definite hints of Terry Gilliam and the early absurdity of Charlie Kaufman, everything we’ve seen of Darkplace/I.T. Crowd veteran and Submarine director Richard Ayoade’s latest, The Double, has ready to watch it. Now here comes another stylish trailer for the film, which should keep the anticipation cooking. Jesse Eisenberg handles the dual role of Simon James, a nerdy, unimpressive drone whose unsatisfying life is thrown into chaos by the sudden arrival of his doppelganger, James Simon. This copy is actually funnier, sexier and much more confident than poor Simon, and soon – as the story spun in the voice-over here suggests – the original (or is he?) is under threat from his more impressive double.Drawing from Fyodor Dostoevsky’s novella, Ayoade wrote the script with Avi Korine and scored a cast that includes Mia Wasikowska, Sally Hawkins, Wallace Shawn, James Fox, Paddy Considine, Noah Taylor, Yasmin Paige,...

We've already seen The Double after it premiered at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, and it popped up again at Sundance last month. Now the film is poised to hit screens in the United States early this summer (after hitting overseas in the spring) and a new trailer from across the pond is here. This trailer takes a unique approach by using the story of two snakes, which is a way of looking at this story of a man (Jesse Eisenberg) who encounters his doppleganger who begins to invade his life by doing everything better than him. Be sure to check out our interview with director Richard Ayoade and watch the trailer! Here's the new UK trailer for Richard Ayoade's The Double from Studio Canal UK: The Double is directed by Richard Ayoade (watch our Tiff interview with him here) who co-wrote the script with Avi Korine (brother of...

Arriving in our cinemas in the spring, the latest trailer for Richard Ayoade’s The Double has arrived, setting the tone very nicely for one of the most unique films of the year.
Loosely based on Fyodor Dostoevsky’s classic novella, the comedy/dramatic-thriller stars Jesse Eisenberg in the dual leading roles opposite Mia Wasikowska.
The film bowed out in Toronto last year – you can read our review here – before crossing the Atlantic for an appearance at the BFI London Film Festival, which is where I saw the film. It’s another instant hit from Ayoade, who made a brilliant directorial debut with Submarine, and is very much still on form with this sophomore feature.
Simon is a timid man, scratching out an isolated existence in an indifferent world. He is overlooked at work, scorned by his mother, and ignored by the woman of his dreams. He feels powerless to change any of these things.

Richard Ayoade's dark comedy The Double is set to make its Sundance premiere on January 17th in the fest's Spotlight section, and in honor of the occasion we have the official poster and an international teaser trailer to share.
The Double is directed by Ayoade, who co-wrote the script with Avi Korine. It stars Jesse Eisenberg in a dual role along with Mia Wasikowska, Wallace Shawn, Yasmin Paige, Noah Taylor, James Fox, Cathy Moriarty, Chris O'Dowd, Sally Hawkins, Craig Roberts, and Paddy Considine. Some cast, right? We'll be keeping an eye out for Magnolia Pictures to announce the release date.
Synopsis:
Simon James is a ghost. Friends, family, and coworkers meet his every action with complete indifference. He grimly goes through the motions, hoping for recognition that never comes. All of this changes when James Simon arrives.
Physically, James and Simon are dead ringers. Yet, in temperament, James is everything Simon is not: personable,...

As a castmember of shows such as Garth Marenghi’s Darkplace and The It Crowd, Richard Ayoade has garnered numerous fans for his onscreen work. His feature filmmaking debut, however, revealed a new set of skills, and left many interested to see what he would pursue next. That turned out to be an adaptation of Fyodor Dostoevsky, which Ayoade directs and co-writes with Avi Korine. The film stars Jesse Eisenberg, Mia Wasikowska, Chris O’Dowd, Wallace Shawn, Sally Hawkins, and Paddy Considine. A new trailer for the feature, which made its debut at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, has now been released, and can be seen below. You can also read our review of the film here.

"Hey - you've got a call?" Another short new teaser trailer has debuted for The Double, the second feature from comedian-turned-filmmaker Richard Ayoade, adapting this time from a twisted Fyodor Dostoevsky novella. Jesse Eisenberg stars in the film as Simon, and also as James, his doppleganger who shows up at his work doing his tasks even better than him. It's a wacky, fun, but still wholly unique experience that I enjoyed quite a bit, since the film premiered at the Toronto Film Festival and will also play Sundance in January. The cast includes Mia Wasikowska, Sally Hawkins, Wallace Shawn, Noah Taylor and Yasmin Paige from Ayoade's Submarine. This is another solid teaser trailer, using the song "Little Man" by Sonny & Cher. The Sundance Institute has released the movie line-up for their Spotlight, Midnight and Sundance Kids selections for The Sundance Film Festival 2014. The Midnight selection has always been my favorite because its always packed with really crazy, fun, and messed up films. It looks like another great collection of films this next year! They include films such as Cooties with Elijah Wood, Dead Snow: Red vs. Dead and more. Sundance Kids is a new addition this year which, if you couldn't tell, is meant for younger audiences.
The Festival takes place January 16-26 in Park City, Salt Lake City, Ogden, and Sundance, Utah, and we will be there to cover as many of the films as humanly possible. Director of Programming, Trevor Groth, had this to say in a statement.

You may have noticed Uncle Creepy posting lots of imagery from films playing at Sundance 2014 earlier today, and now we have the full announcement of which horror projects are included in the Spotlight and Park City at Midnight lineups.
As mentioned when posting the first wave of films screening this year, it's sometimes difficult to tell exactly what's horror-related, so below are our best guesses of what we'll be covering from this latest batch or are films that sound just fringey enough that we'll be keeping our eyes on them:
Spotlight
Blue Ruin / U.S.A. (Director and screenwriter: Jeremy Saulnier) — A mysterious outsider’s quiet life turns upside down when he returns to his childhood home to carry out an act of vengeance. Proving to be an amateur assassin, he winds up in a brutal fight to protect his estranged family. Cast: Macon Blair, Amy Hargreaves, Sidné Anderson, Devin Ratray,...

Sundance’s Spotlight section works as a sampling of quality items that dug their knees in the sand of the Croisette, or hit the asphalt payment in Toronto. It’s an acknowledgment of U.S film distributors (in this case: Radius-twc, Magnolia, Music Box Films, A24, Sony Pictures Classics, Strand Releasing) who’ve all contributed to my favorite disease – one that is called cinephilia. It’s also a look into 2014 – which is when they’ll be unveiled theatrically. And finally, it’s a way in which to receive the extended Sundance family once again such as Richard Ayoade (preemed his debut feautre here – Submarine) and Jeremy Saulnier (was at the fest as a cinematographer for Matthew Porterfield’s I Used to Be Darker). Here are the eight selections:

When Sundance announced the films in competition for the 2014 festival yesterday, its organizers noted that they were impressed by the caliber of cinematic artistry — mostly due to technology — that freed up filmmakers to experiment with different genres. No category of the festival is more rooted in genre than Park City at Midnight, the late-night section that specializes in horror and the supernatural, and this year’s slate has several potential breakouts. “The Midnight lineup came together in a way that is about the strongest group we’ve ever had, top to bottom,” says Trevor Groth, Sundance’s director of programming.

We're happy to report some fantastic news about one of our favorite indie films from this year's Toronto Film Festival. The second feature directed by Richard Ayoade, titled The Double, has just been acquired for Us release by Magnolia Pictures. The indie distributor just made the announcement today, saying "we're thrilled to announce that we have acquired The Double! Starring Jesse Eisenberg (The Social Network) & Mia Wasikowska (Jane Eyre) and Directed & Co-Written by Richard Ayoade (Submarine)." The film will undoubtedly earn a cult following and earned quite a bit of praise (our review) at Tiff just last month. For reference, here's the first Tiff teaser trailer for The Double that originally came out during the festival: The Double is directed by Richard Ayoade (watch our Tiff interview with him here), who co-write the script with Avi Korine (brother of Spring Breakers director Harmony Korine), based on Fyodor Dostoyevsky's The Double: A Petersburg Poem.

You’ve probably heard a fair bit about this one, and now you get to know what company to pay attention to for all your The Double needs. The film has managed some great press following Tiff, and if Jesse Eisenberg wasn’t enough, writer/director Richard Ayoade is finally getting enough attention that people are curious to see what he’s doing with this one.
Unfortunately, we don’t get a lot of information about release, but this is one to keep your eyes on. If Submarine is anything to go by (which I loved), and if the full cast does even a small percentage of what they are capable of, this is going to be on your top list of 2014.

Ayoade ("Submarine") co-penned the script with Avi Korine (brother of "Spring Breakers" director Harmony Korine), loosely adapting it from Fyodor Dostoyevsky's novella of the same title. Wallace Shawn, Chris O'Dowd, Sally Hawkins and Paddy Considine add support to the cast. Magnolia is eyeing a 2014 release, following the wrap up of the film's festival run.

Returning to the London Film Festival with his sophomore feature, Richard Ayoade’s The Double is by far one of the most memorable films you’ll see this year. It really stays with you after you’ve left the cinema, and all too often that isn’t the case.
Taking Dostoyevsky’s original novel of the same name as its inspiration, the film is led by brilliant performances from Jesse Eisenberg and Mia Wasikowska. And in celebration of the film’s appearance at the festival over the weekend, StudioCanal has launched the first character posters, via Empire, giving us a look at the leading duo.

Following its debut at the 2013 Toronto International Film Festival, the newest film from British TV star turned director, Richard Ayoade, is set to arrive in the UK next spring. "If everyone decides you're not a person, you aren't, in a way." One of my favorite films that I saw at the 2013 Toronto Film Festival is The Double, the second feature from comedian-actor-filmmaker Richard Ayoade. I fell in love with his first film, Submarine (watch it on Netflix!), back at Tiff in 2010 and was lucky enough to catch the world premiere of The Double at Tiff this year. Based on the Fyodor Dostoevsky novella, Jesse Eisenberg stars as a timid worker whose life is thrown into disarray when his doppelganger shows up. I met up with Richard Ayoade in Toronto for a good chat about The Double recorded on Flipcam. Ayoade is credited as co-writer of The Double, along with Avi Korine, and director. The film has received comparisons to Terry Gilliam and Brazil, in a positive way, on top of great reviews (see Criticwire). I talked with Richard at length about being a filmmaker,...

Fresh from triumph on the festival circuit, a host of exciting British films is set for release. We talk to the directors behind this sudden renaissance
At Cannes, in May, there was anxious talk. Of the 70-plus features showcased at the film festival only two of them were British. Did it signal a decline in the UK industry? By the end of 2013, would our film people be wringing their hands while cinemagoers queued up for American fare and the House of Lords unhappily convened a select committee?
Without a doubt, the pair of British films on show at Cannes were excellent – Clio Barnard's The Selfish Giant and Paul Wright's For Those in Peril – both bruising, powerful dramas. But French and American and Mexican and Chinese and Cambodian film-makers left Cannes with the top prizes; meanwhile fans and boosters of British cinema travelled back across the Channel in mild panic.

The Double
Written by Avi Korine and Richard Ayoade
Directed by Richard Ayoade
UK, 2013
Better to have an ungainly surplus of ideas than none at all; that seems to be Richard Ayoade’s philosophy behind The Double, a wild, uneven, but never dull sci-fi black comedy that purports to tackle Dostoevsky’s novella of the same name, but is at least as interested in pilfering visual ideas from films gone by while marrying them to Ayoade’s winningly dry comic sensibility.
Set in a bleak retro-futuristic dystopia, The Double stars Jesse Eisenberg, who amplifies his usual bumbling manner for slapstick’s sake, as Simon James, a number-cruncher at a massive corporation whose precise purpose is deliberately ambiguous. Simon dreams of climbing up the corporate ladder by earning the praise of his boss (Wallace Shawn) and makes pathetic attempts to flirt with a fellow employee, Hannah (Mia Wasikowska), but his persistent...
