It’s not every day you get to sit down with a seasoned composer of the industry, and it was with great pleasure I got the chance to talk to Jason Graves, the man behind Far Cry Primal’s composition, as well as many other prolific games such as Dead Space, Tomb Raider’s 2013 reboot and Until Dawn, to name but three.
Primal itself is Ubisoft’s prominent left-turn from the otherwise modern setting the franchise had been routed in to this point. By literally having the game with an onscreen graphic rewinding time from 2016 all the way back to 10,000 BC, it required the team to reevaluate every game mechanic and ability, reworking them for an entirely new time period.
Honestly, whilst the game itself seems to be coming under fire for reusing too many of the same aspects as Far Cry 4, it’s become a personal early highlight of the year,...

Two years in the making, the suitably cinematic score to the smash Tomb Raider game reboot became an anticipated release in itself, after award-winning composer Jason Graves (Dead Space 3), debuted the suite “Survivor” at last year's Spike Video Game Awards during the unveiling of game footage. You can watch the performance of that piece at the end of this article, but first let's get to the score itself, which is actually kind of revolutionary in the world of game music – and a surprise treat for horror fans as well, which even non-gamers will appreciate. Graves has cited classical composers Prokofiev and Tchaikovsky as his greatest influences, but he also revealed in a behind-the-scenes interview that the game's scariest cues were inspired by modern composer Krzysztof Penderecki, whose most frightening works have been used in legendary horror films like The Shining and The Exorcist. The cues most reminiscent of Penderecki's unsettling,...

The latest installment in Visceral Games & Electronic Arts' splattery sci-fi/horror game series finds our protagonists on the ice planet of Tau Volantis, exploring a vast industrial complex on a mission to end the Necromorph plague, and confronting deadly new enemies both humanoid and monstrous. For the complete breakdown on the game itself, check out our review here. But right now, let's dig into the soundtrack, which features some of the series' most impressive musical compositions, and reflects the series' dramatic change in tone. This entry in the series has a much more sweeping, muscular sound, with less emphasis on the claustrophobic tension and dark horror ambiance of chapters 1 and 2, and more on action-adventure elements – though many familiar themes are carried over from the earlier games. The new sonic textures are ably handled by the team-up of two acclaimed composers: Jason Graves, who scored the previous two Dead Space games...

Amanda Dyar: Dead Space 3's soundtrack was the first you've worked on in the highly popular series. How did you become involved in the project, and did you originally think it was a good fit for your talents?
James Hannigan I got involved during the middle of last year, but things didn’t get too intense for me until fairly late in the day - partly because some of what I was set to work on didn’t fully come together or finalize until the later stages of development. If you've ever wanted to hang a piece of art from "Mirror's Edge" on your wall, Danish gallery Cook & Becker have partnered up with EA to offer fine art prints from 2008's first person free running game as well as the "Mass Effect" franchise.
Both Dice and BioWare provided Cook & Becker with images for ten "Mass Effect" prints and nine for "Mirror's Edge," (technically five for the latter which has a three repeats with smaller sizes). You can see the BioWare gallery here and the Dice gallery here.
For my money, the "Mass Effect" stuff comes off a bit better, although these are pieces we've seen quite a few times before in promotional material and the "Art of Mass Effect 3" book from Dark Horse. Still, whichever image you choose, expect to cough up a little bit of money for these limited: something like the museum-quality Tali print (printed in a...

The bloody sci-fi survival horror game Dead Space from Electronic Arts has been terrifying gamers for several weeks now, and even more frightening than it’s ghoulish graphics is it’s original symphonic soundtrack. Composed by the renown composer Jason Graves with the help of The Skywalker Symphony Orchestra, Graves creates an intense, eerie soundscape for this first person shooter game that adds the perfect atmosphere to this nightmarish game. The Dead Space CD features 15 tracks of bombastic orchestrations offering a wide dynamic range from eerie, screeching strings to thunderous, frenetic percussions. A must have for lovers of dark and dissonant music, or for fans of the EA game itself.
