Barcelona – Rémi Chayé’s “Calamity, a Childhood of Martha Jane Cannary,” Anca Damian’s “The Island,” Fernando Trueba and Javier Mariscal’s “They Shot the Piano Player,” and Enrique Gato’s “Tad the Lost Explorer and the Curse of the Mummy” are among the sixty-six projects from twenty countries to be pitched at the 22nd Cartoon Movie, Europe’s leading animated movie co-production event. Cartoon Movie will take place in the French port city of Bordeaux, kicking off March 3rd.

I still have at least three films competing for Best Animated Feature to watch, including Ernest & Celestine (which is made by the wonderful talents behind A Town Called Panic), A Letter to Momo and O Ap?stolo from director Fernando Cortizo, which I only just received a couple days ago. Films that made the shortlist that I have not received screeners for include The Fake, Khumba, The Legend of Sarila, Puella Magi Madoka Magica the Movie - Rebellion and Rio: 2096 A Story of Love and Fury. So no telling what will come of those, or who has actually seen them to comment intelligently. That said, I've just updated my Best Animated Feature predictions and Frozen remains my #1 even though Hayao Miyazaki's The Wind Rises seems to be the critical darling of the season. We'll see how that shakes out over the coming months. Here are my current predictions. Frozen...

They say timing is everything, and somehow, I managed to have good timing with some of the clothes I chose to wear to Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas. (Bear with me and my nerdiness.) I had picked out an Epcot-specific T-shirt to wear to Day Two of Fantastic Fest, in some goofy way to tie into Escape from Tomorrow, which screened that morning. Of course, then I thought I wouldn’t be attending said screening; the machinations that went into place to secure me a spot, as mentioned in that Day Two report happened so immediately that I realized I was no longer ironically dressed for the occasion in Disney gear. But as it happens, I wore that shirt, with the design of The American Adventure, the centerpiece of Epcot’s World Showcase, to Day Four of the festival. And, as luck would have it, a shirt commemorating one aspect...

Rio 2096: A Story of Love and Fury, the feature debut from Brazilian director Luiz Bolognesi, has won the top prize at Annecy Film Festival. The film revolves "around the love between an immortal hero and Janaína, the woman he has been in love with for 600 years." The story is set in four phases of Brazil's history: colonization, slavery, during the military regime and in the future, in the midst of wars over water. It is the first Brazilian film to play in competition at Annecy. Other prize winners include Oscar-winner Chris Landreth (Ryan) winning best short film for Subconscious Password and Australian Julian Frost taking home best commissioned film for the viral hit Dumb Ways To Die. The audience award goes to Fernando Cortizo...

I would really like to tell you about Marçal Forés' fantastic story of an adolescent and his talking teddy bear, Animals, and Fernando Cortizo's gorgeous animated fantasy film O Apostolo. But I cannot. I can tell you a little bit about each, but you see, both were in either Spanish or Catalan with no subtitles. And I don't speak either of those languages. Here's what I know: The 3-D stop-motion animation in O Apostolo is gorgeous right from the first scene, which depicts two convicts running through labyrinth tunnels in hopes of escaping from prison. Both men talk quite a bit in these tunnels, and based on audience-laughter, I think that some of what they say is funny. That's about where I checked out, but,...

O Apóstolo isn't only the latest animated offering from Spain, but it reflects upon Spain's rich history in film animation. For some, the more recent “Planet 51” was considered a major landmark due to the budget size, overseas box office, and the huge technical advances it made in rapport to previous films in the genre, but the latest animated offering, which was set to have its world premiere at Sitges International Fantastic Film Festival but has since shifted plans, is a bigger, more detailed, stereoscopic 3D item that is poised to become a benchmark in the animation field. Directed by newcomer Fernando Cortizo, O Apóstolo is unlike previous films in the genre since it's one of the first animated films in Spain in which the target audience is for mature audiences. The story and the mood are closely inspired by the likes of Tim Burton's “The Corpse Bride”, though here,...

As the number of Hollywood 3D movies continues to proliferate, there are signs that the process is gaining popularity among independent filmmakers...
For more than a century, makers of 3D films have been finding new ways of poking audiences in the eye. Since the first stereoscopic film appeared in 1903, the Lumière brothers' minute-long L'arrivée D'un Train, the process has been roundly associated with novelty and spectacle.
In the 20s, 3D was used to depict the vastness of landscapes in films including New York City and the Grand Canyon, before seeing a brief resurgence in popularity in the 50s, with low budget genre pictures such as House Of Wax and It Came From Outer Space.
Fast-forward to the 21st century, and 3D is again being pushed by Hollywood studios as the next big thing and, in an echo of earlier years, is frequently employed to add depth to expansive vistas (most...
