All good sitcoms have that one random tearjerker episode tossed in, and for "Futurama" that episode is clearly "Jurassic Bark." It gives us the tale of Fry's old dog Seymour, who tries his hardest to find Fry after he's trapped inside a cryogenic chamber. Eventually, Seymour gives up and spends the rest of his life outside the pizza parlor Fry worked at, waiting in vain for Fry to return. It's a dark sequel of sorts to the previous season's "Luck of the Fryrish," which ended on a more heartwarming note with Fry's brother naming his son after him.
"['Luck of the Fryrish'] gave us the right to try for one of these emotional episodes," co-creator David Cohen explained in a panel for Nerdist. "About once a year would you say we do one? So we did 'Jurassic Bark' with Fry's dead dog, which people care much more about than humans for some reason.

Sometimes with a franchise, and I’m talking about a bona fide, hit making franchise that churns out money and fans movie over movie, you gotta change it up. On this channel we’ve seen many defenses of entries that could have been the Black Sheep, we’ve taken a gander and what the eff happened to the movie from production to release, and we’ve even looked at movies that were never made. Fox says that the First Amendment limits the FCC from considering whether its news coverage of Donald Trump’s false election claims should play a role in the license renewal of its Philadelphia station.
In a filing this week, Fox Television Station attorneys argued against a petition brought by the Media and Democracy Project, a challenge led in part by former Fox executive Preston Padden. The public interest group is seeking an evidentiary hearing on the license renewal of Wtxf-tv, or Fox 29 on the basis of that the company “lacks the character to remain a licensee.”
The Fox attorneys wrote that such a hearing “for the first time in history, have the Commission adjudicate a broadcast license renewal on the basis of cable network content, in violation of the First Amendment and the authority delegated to the Commission by Congress.” Despite the revelations from the Dominion defamation case, the Fox...

Filmmaker Joe Lynch recently enjoyed a well-received world premiere of his new movie Mayhem (read Heather's review here) at the SXSW Film Festival, and true to form, the Holliston co-star is showing no signs of slowing down, as he's now set to direct the horror film Taste from a screenplay by David Cohen, the screenwriter behind 2012's No One Lives.
Deadline reports the news of Lynch taking the directing reins on Taste, which will be produced by Erin Eggers, Chase Hudson and Matthew Porter of Penchant Entertainment, with Cohen on board to produce as well.
Filming on Taste is slated to start in Los Angeles this summer with a food-centric (and potentially cannibalistic) plot (via Deadline):
"When a young chef-on-the-rise is invited to cook for a revered master’s private supper club, what at first seems like a career-launching opportunity soon turns deadly with the discovery that she and...

Luke Evans's psycho-killer turn enlivens Ryuhei Kitamura's slasher flick
Splashes of gore and evisceration combine with a nicely nasty psycho-killer turn from Luke Evans to enliven this grindy slasher from Midnight Meat Train director Ryuhei Kitamura. When stereotypical hoodlums turn over the wrong couple in a remote diner, twisty table-turning retribution ensues. Shooting on Super-16 (rather than digital), cinematographer Daniel Pearl achieves a neat balance between old-school grain and modern sheen, thankfully eschewing the tedious turd-brown-palette that has become de rigueur. David Cohen's table-turning script owes a debt to Jennifer Lynch's disreputable back-catalogue – his next project, Underground, is a "journey into the world of extreme cuisine" to which director Neil Marshall was reportedly attached. Waiter!

Frankenstein’s Army
Written by Richard Raaphorst, Chris W. Mitchell, and Miguel Tejada-Flores
Directed by Richard Raaphorst
Netherlands/USA/Czech Republic, 2013
Frankenstein’s Army is the closest thing thus far to a live-action Bioshock adaptation. The second Frightfest feature to resemble a video game – albeit in a positive light – the film forgoes the tiresome trademarks of the found-footage format, its curious lens rendering the entire escapade a thrilling a first-person adventure. We begin among a troupe of Russian soldiers during World War II as they delve deeper from the outskirts of the forest and into a laboratory of mechanical nasties, eventually confronting the mad scientist responsible for their creation. All the while, the camera never skirts from its responsibility as a steadfast explorer.
Dr. Victor Frankenstein’s creativity – and by extension, that of director Richard Raaphorst – is truly something to behold. There’s a huge range of beasts in all shapes and sizes,...

No One Lives director Ryuhei Kitamura took part in our latest Q&A session, telling us about his love for Driver, working with Luke Evans and Robert Hall, and what’s next:
Thank you very much for taking the time to talk with Daily Dead. What was it about the script for No One Lives that made you want to take on this project?
Ryuhei Kitamura: I loved the script because it was not just about blood and guts. I was fascinated by the character of Driver; a non-stop killing machine doing it all for love. To me this is a twisted love story.
When looking for your lead actor, was Luke Evans your first pick? What made him stand out from the pack and why was he perfect for this role?

No One Lives (2012) Writer David Cohen and “Versus” director Ryuhei Kitamura’s nifty little horror flick surprised the hell out of me. As soon as I saw the WWE Studios logo, my heart slipped into the heel of my socks. Although the company’s releases are generally entertaining, I’ve never really encountered one that really blew me away. “No One Lives” might be light years away from perfect, but it’s one of the stronger genre films I’ve seen all year. The film tells the story of a group of low-rent criminals who come face-to-face with an unstoppable killing machine. The premise might be simple and stupid, but Kitamura manages to work wonders with the material. Thankfully, the movie doesn’t try to rewrite the well-worn slasher handbook used by countless filmmakers over the years. Instead, Kitamura and company use these tropes to fashion an experience that somehow...

They Died of Boredom: Kitamura’s Second Graceless English Language Film
Japanese director Ryuhei Kitamura, of Versus (2000) fame, follows up his perplexing guilty pleasure English language debut, The Midnight Meat Train (2008) with No One Lives, a sort of torture porn meets Dexter scenario that manages to come across even more tired than its dated synopsis already sounds. While many will cite Kitamura’s assumed discomfort with the English language as the responsible factor for this atrociously silly film, the real culprit has to be the brain-dead screenplay by David Cohen (who, surprise, surprise, has no other writing credits to his name/pseudonym at the moment), which doesn’t contain one decently written line.
A half naked, terrorized female runs screaming through the woods, and she hurriedly scratches the words “Emma Alive” into the bark of a tree before she’s predictably recaptured. It turns out that Emma (Adelaide Clemens) was kidnapped quite some time ago,...

The body count rises with bloody, relentless precision in No One Lives, an old-fashioned slasher flick masquerading as a kidnapping thriller. When a family of Tennessee backwoods killers kidnaps a traveling couple, the power dynamic abruptly shifts when the man, known only as Driver (Luke Evans), turns out to be a serial killer on the run. Mayhem ensues, as one by one, Driver begins picking off the clan, deploying tools the maniacs from Friday the 13th and Halloween would appreciate: a woodchipper, the whirring fan of a car engine, and for one nasty beheading, a wooden clipboard. Director Ryûhei Kitamura (The Midnight Meat Train) is too talented for material this retro-junky, but he and screenwriter David Cohen keep the action coming hard and fast, whi...

No one runs, no one escapes… Well actually, we’re here for No One Lives, an upcoming horror thriller which comes from director Ryuhei Kitamura (yep, The Midnight Meat Train helmer) and stars Luke Evans and Adelaide Clemens in the leading roles. I mean, we finally have a decent look at the movie which premiered this September at Toronto International Film Festival, but is (unfortunately) still without an official release date (January 2013 is expected, though).
Let us start this horror story by saying that David Cohen is responsible for the script which follows a gang of ruthless highway killers who kidnap a wealthy couple only to shockingly discover that things are not what they seem.
Beside the above mentioned Evans (great Evans by the way!) and Clemens, the rest of the No One Lives cast also includes America Olivo, Beau Knapp, Derek Magyar, George Murdoch, Laura Ramsey, Lee Tergesen and Rob Steinberg.

Returning to Midnight Madness for the first time since his 2000 film Versus, Director Ryuhei Kitamura brings us a messy, bloody and disturbing case of why it pay to not judge a book by its cover with No One Lives. Warner Bros. PIctures has noted the success of Paramount's The Devil Inside and has tapped director William Brent Bell to direct The Vatican, a pitch for a conspiracy driven thriller to be scripted by David Cohen, reports Deadline. The Vatican, a sale that was conducted right before the holidays, will be fast tracked by Warner Bros and is described as a hybrid that uses some found footage techniques like The Devil Inside did. Cohen wrote Subject Zero, a script on last years Black Script, and No One Lives, which is in post production, was directed by Ryuhei Kitamura and stars Luke Evans. The Vatican will be produced by Roy Lee, Lawrence Grey and John Middleton, and Bells producing partner Matt Peterman. Peterman wrote The Devil Inside with Bell, and produced that horror hit with Morris Paulson.
