Let’s take a moment to recall the 2008 MTV Vma Best New Artist nominees.
That year, Tokio Hotel (what?!) upset Taylor Swift, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Jordin Sparks for the annual honor, in a sort of curse of fate that befalls many Best New Artists, as Tokio Hotel went on to not make much of an impact stateside (they’ve fared much better in their homeland of Germany), while Sparks grabbed a couple of chart-climbing hits, and Swift, Perry and Cyrus became… well, you know… megastars.
Photo: Getty Images
Perry’s 2010 Teenage Dream album is matched only by Michael Jackson’s Bad in the number of No. 1 singles it produced, Cyrus’ “Wrecking Ball” of an album frenzy was arguably the most culturally relevant (and arguably, appropriative) phenomenon of 2013, and Swift -- a self-image virtuoso and omnipresent millennial icon -- transformed from the “Teardrops on My Guitar” country darling, to the victim of the most infamous mic-grabbing in recorded...

Whenever Tokio Hotel gets ready to play a concert, they gather backstage, circle up, put their hands in the center and give a hearty Power Ranger "Activation!" If Tokio Hotel is to believed, this is the truth. We learned that fun nugget and more from our recent HitFix Mix interview, where the four-piece German pop-rock troupe revealed a little more about what makes them nervous and more of their... motivations. When you flash your boobs at Georg Listing and Tom Kaulitz, for instance, the bassist and guitarist will respectively be almost 100% sure you're flashing at them. Singer Bill Kaulitz revealed that the band is especially "lazy" in the studio, while Gustav Schäfer admitted that smoking is perhaps one of their most treasured time-killers. The band last released their album "Kings of Suburbia" and have been promoting singles "Love Who Loves You Back" and "Feel It All"; the music video for...

Lawson arrived to the music scene in a moment when One Direction had monopolized the slot for a male pop band. The Wanted were also doing well, even with their permanent look of boredom (and also slight anger at being in the shadow of a newcomer, despite being older and having been around for longer). It could have seemed that the only option for male bands was to go down this route of dancing rehearsals and summer love songs, and then Lawson arrived. This four-piece band ventured their way into the music biz with a first single titled ‘When She Was Mine’, and built their image as performers by playing their instruments. It worked: the song was number 4 in the UK and it was followed by ‘Taking Over Me’, which managed a position in the top 3.

The newly single Depp attended Aerosmith's after party at the Los Angeles eatery, along with guests like Jim Carrey, Seth Green, Lana Del Rey and members of Tokio Hotel, reports TMZ.
"Aerosmith rented the place out ... one of the greatest parties I've ever seen ... legendary," says one source.
After 14 years together, Depp and Paradis confirmed their split in June via a statement from Depp's publicist.

Far East Movement recruited some unexpected A-listers for Dirty Bass, ranging from pop titans like Justin Bieber and Tokio Hotel's Bill Kaulitz to urban music's own prince and princess, Tyga and Cassie.

Ever wondered what it would sound like if the Far East Movement enlisted Tokio Hotel's glammy, gothy lead singer Bill Kaulitz for a track? Well, wonder no more, because now we have "If I Die Tomorrow."

There are still a few hours left before polls close in the Elite Eight of MTV's Musical March Madness, and it looks like every second — and vote — is going to count. Because, as we predicted on Wednesday, we've got more than a few epic encounters on our hands, as the remaining eight bands slug it out for a spot in the Final Four.
And, really, with matchups that include Paramore vs. Evanescence, Green Day vs. Adam Lambert and the Mmm grudge match to end all Mmm grudge matches (that would be Coheed and Cambria vs. Tokio Hotel), well, we'd expect nothing less. Things have been wild, to say the very least.

Well, here we go. It's Elite Eight time in MTV's Musical March Madness, and it's not exactly hyperbole to call it the greatest round of eight in tournament history.
Why? Well, after voting in the Sweet 16 closed Tuesday at midnight, we bid farewell to both Mmm favorites (30 Seconds to Mars and Linkin Park — you will be missed) and proverbial flies in the ointment (Semi Precious Weapons, F---ed Up, we're sad to see you go), leaving us with only the biggest and baddest bands in the land. And now, finally, they're facing each other, with a spot in the Final Four on the line.
Voting in all Elite Eight matchups is now underway, and polls close at midnight Et Thursday.

After two rounds of upsets and upheaval, MTV's Musical March Madness has finally reached the Sweet 16, where things really start to get interesting.
Because at this point in the tournament, only the strong remain: Our last two champions are both still alive, as are the last two runners-up. There are the perennial powerhouses still looking for that elusive Mmm title, and a few hard-to-kill underdogs, too, each hoping to shock the world.
And with matchups that include Evanescence vs. Linkin Park, Paramore vs. 30 Seconds to Mars and Green Day vs. James Durbin, this year's Sweet 16 is shaping up to be one for the ages. And if your favorite band is still alive, you can help them move one step closer to the Mmm title by voting now.

Of all the first-round upsets in MTV's Musical March Madness tournament (and there were a lot), none was as shocking as Toronto hardcore act F---ed Up's trouncing of top-seeded — and heavily favored — Mumford & Sons. Except to F'ed frontman Damian "Pink Eyes" Abraham, that is. He saw this one coming from the day the bracket was revealed.
"I think anyone who bet on them was a fool, because, let's just be honest, if their fans were really living the Mumford & Sons way, they're probably not the most technologically savvy individuals in the world," he laughed. "It's all based on, you know, the 1920s, so the Internet at that point was just a wireless typing device, and it takes a lot longer...

After one week of MTV's Musical March Madness, about the only sure thing is that there really is no sure thing. Because with one round in the books, we're bidding adieu to three of our top-seeded bands — the Foo Fighters (bested by James Durbin), Mumford & Sons (shocked by F---ed Up) and the Black Keys (nipped by Awolnation) — upsets that prove no one is safe and assure us that, much like the actual Ncaa tournament, everyone's bracket is irrevocably broken (shout out to Mizzou and Duke ... thanks, guys!).
And though they survived, several other top-tier bands were taken down to the wire. In the West, third-seeded Blink-182 got by #14 Korn by a razor-thin margin, while #5 Linkin Park narrowly avoided an upset at...

It’s one of the biggest categories of the night. Previous winners include Eminem, Lady Gaga, Alicia Keys, 50 Cent, Justin Bieber and Nirvana. We’re talking about the MTV Video Music Award for Best New Artist, and as usual, this year’s nominees represent some of the hottest new acts in music.
With talent this diverse vying for the Moonman, it’s anyone’s guess who will walk away from the Aug. 28 ceremony victorious. Will voters opt for Big Sean’s smooth R&B hit “My Last” or will they lean toward the harder hip-hop of Tyler, The Creator’s “Yonkers” or Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow”? Will they prefer Kreayshawn's fun and funky “Gucci Gucci” to Foster the People’s fresh rocker “Pumped Up Kicks”?
We have not idea who’s going to take the prize, but you can cast your vote here.
