In the final episode of Avatar: The Last Airbender Season 2, Azula’s lightning strike takes down Aang, nearly killing him. Before Azula could finish her job, Iroh facilitated the Gaang’s escape, allowing Katara to treat his wounds using her Waterbending skills. However, the Fire Nation believed that the last Airbender was gone for good this time. In the first episode of Season 3, Azula gives credit to Zuko for taking down Aang when they met their father Fire Lord Ozai.

Avatar director Giancarlo Volpe revealed that it was Azula’s evil plan that motivated her to give Zuko the credit. Volpe shared that Azula was actually passing the blame as she knew about the possibility that Aang may reemerge after getting healed by Katara.

Princess Azula, the daughter of Firelord Ozai, is undoubtedly one of the strongest female characters in the show, making her one of the cruelest antagonists in Avatar the Last Airbender. Known for being the only firebender capable of creating blue flames, she is intelligent, cruel, and always one step ahead of everyone, and nothing displays it better than the opening episode of Season 3.
While she succeeds in almost killing Aang, the firebender refuses to take the credit when meeting her father, and the motivations behind this decision further cement her as one of the best villains.

James Cameron has apparently always had big plans for his Avatar film series.
In fact, half a decade before Avatar’s 2009 debut – whereupon it became the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide, earning 2.9bn (£2.3bn) at the box office – he had already acquired the rights to its title.
As it turns out, Cameron’s forward thinking had ramifications for Nickelodeon’s hit animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender.
“In 2004 we learned that we had to change the name of our show from Avatar to Avatar: The Last Airbender because James Cameron already had the rights to a movie called Avatar,” series director Giancarlo Volpe revealed in a recent tweet.
“Now [Cameron’s] sequel is called The Way of Water. If part three is called The Firebending Masters we riot,” he quipped.

Nickelodeon’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” started airing in February 2005, over four years before James Cameron’s “Avatar” opened in theaters and began its run to becoming the highest-grossing film of all time worldwide with 2.9 billion (unadjusted for inflation). And yet, Nickelodeon was blocked from naming the animated series simply “Avatar” because Cameron already had the rights to the title. Fans have often wondered if a connection between the two titles existed, and now they have their answer courtesy of animator Giancarlo Volpe, who directed 19 episodes of the Nickelodeon series.
“In 2004 we learned that we had to change the name of our show from ‘Avatar’ to ‘Avatar: The Last Airbender’ because James Cameron already had the rights to a movie called ‘Avatar,'” Volpe wrote on Twitter. “Now the sequel is called ‘The Way of Water.’ If part 3 is called ‘The Firebending Masters,’ we riot.”

The Boys supervillain Homelander is just as maniacally insecure in short-form animation as he is in live-action.
In 2021, after two seasons of critical acclaim and a season two Emmy nomination for outstanding drama series, Amazon Prime Video expanded the world of The Boys, its no-holds-barred satire of superhero storytelling and modern-day America. And in March 2022, the second addition to the Boys shared universe, The Boys Presents: Diabolical, premiered with eight animated shorts, each utilizing anthology storytelling and a unique animation style.
The Boys and Diabolical executive producers Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg originally approached comedy triumvirate The Lonely Island (Andy Samberg, Jorma Taccone, Akiva Schaffer) to write an episode, but Samberg himself had a rather unexpected idea. “I have a long-running rule of when Seth and Evan call me, I just say, ‘What is it?’ And the answer is almost always yes,” Samberg...

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Boys” is finally giving fans of its Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson-created comic book source material what they have always wanted: Simon Pegg playing Hughie Campbell. The gift to “Boys” fandom was delivered Wednesday via the trailer for “The Boys: Diabolical,” Prime Video’s animated anthology series set in the universe of the live-action show.
In the trailer for the eight-episode “Diabolical,” the different characters and animation styles for each of the the fun-size episodes, running 12-14 minutes, are revealed. “The Boys Presents: Diabolical” proudly gives heroes a bad name.
The bloody fun-size superhero anthology isn’t for the squeamish, with eight short stories inspired by The New York Times–bestselling comic “The Boys,” created by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson. The was developed by executive producer and showrunner Eric Kripke for Prime Video’s live action series.
“From the wonderfully damaged minds” of writers Evan Goldberg and Seth Rogen, Justin Roiland and Ben Bayouth, Garth Ennis, Awkwafina, Eliot Glazer and Ilana Glazer, Andy Samberg, Aisha Tyler, and Simon Racioppa come “The Boys”-centric stories — including an origin story for Homelander that even further parallels Marvel’s Captain America by way of a handsome transformation.
Homelander, insecure? Now it all makes sense.
All eight “Diabolical” episodes will premiere March 4 exclusively on Prime Video in more than 240 countries and territories worldwide. Each episode runs between 12 and 14 minutes, featuring a unique animation style.

Netflix has announced that they are producing a new animated fantasy series called The Dragon Prince. They also released a poster for the series which you can see in full below. This actually sounds like a promising show as it comes from the writer of Avatar: The Last Airbender, Aaron Ehasz, and the director of hit video game franchise Uncharted, Justin Richmond.
We learned from the announcement that the story will center around "two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands."
Sounds pretty awesome and something that I'd enjoy watching. The original series will make an appearance at Comic-Con next week on July 21st. Ehasz, Richmond and executive producer Giancarlo Volpe (Atla) will offer a sneak peek and an inside look into the epic fantasy tale.

Netflix took to Twitter today to announce The Dragon Prince, its new animated series from Avatar: The Last Airbender headwriter Aaron Ehasz and Uncharted game director Justin Richmond.
The streaming service’s @seewhatsnext account tweeted the first poster from the new series, which will be about “two human princes who forge an unlikely bond with the elfin assassin sent to kill them, embarking on an epic quest to bring peace to their warring lands.”
The all-new original animated series will make an appearance at Comic-Con on July 21. Ehasz, Richmond and executive producer Giancarlo Volpe (Atla) will give a sneak peek and an inside look into this new epic fantasy tale which is slated to hit Netflix in September.
The new series adds to the list of Netflix’s new animated fare of the fantastical persuasion. Matt Groening’s fantasy series Disenchantment is set to premiere on August 17, one month before The Dragon Prince.

They say unseen footage will be shown. Now, this is subjective, because we only had 11 episodes air in the United States, two more on the DVD / Blu-Ray release and a few more have aired overseas for those that can find them for download, so more than likely it will be one of these epsiodes, but we don't have confirmation yet. Cartoon Network has revealed their 2013-2014 TV show lineup today and, much to the dismay of fans, confirmed that that “Green Lantern: The Animated Series” and “Young Justice” have been canceled. While this may not come as the biggest surprise for the “Young Justice” viewers who paid attention to both the series’ hiatus and subsequent cancellation of its comic book counterpart, the news certainly comes as a blow for fans. Together with the end of “Green Lantern: The Animated Series”, this leaves only “Beware the Batman” and “Teen Titans Go” as the remaining DC Nation shows, both of which have yet to premiere on the network.
While the absence of the shows didn’t necessarily cement the cancellation of the series, Giancarlo Volpe, the showrunner for “Green Lantern: Tas” confirmed the news via his Twitter stating, “This time we knew. They just didn’t want us to announce it publicly until they did.

Speaking with Newsarama, Green Lantern: The Animated Series showrunner Giancarlo Volpe discusses the show, as well as the debut of Sinestro (arguably Hal Jordan's greatest enemy) in the episode "Prisoner Of Sinestro". He confirms that the character wasn't originally brought on board the series because of its being in early development during the release of the 2011 Green Lantern film, in which Mark Strong played Sinestro. "The folks at DC Entertainment politely asked us to back off of Sinestro "for now" because they weren't really sure what his fate would be in the feature film [when we were in early development of the series]. They didn't know if his turn would be in the first one or later, and if you've seen the film they do hint at his turn to the Yellow Lanterns in the credits scene." Volpe expresses his pleasure in finally bringing the character onto the series, and...

After returning home from a lovely picnic, I made it my top priority to watch the latest episode of Young Justice to bring you my latest thoughts on the going ons of DC's Earth-16 universe. Instead many fans of the show, including myself, were shafted royally this morning as Cartoon Network pulled the entire DC Nation block from its October schedule. Without warning, mind you.
In place of Green Lantern and Young Justice, the network aired two episodes of their How To Train A Dragon series, which sent Twitterverse and fans of the DC Nation block into a tizzy. Green Lantern producer Giancarlo Volpe explained Cartoon Network's 'reason' for duping fans this morning, and revealed that he had no clue that the preemption would take place.
"Apparently, Cartoon Network preempted it in celebration of their 20th birthday," Volpe tweeted. "Their logic, not mine."
Um, should we even call that explanation "logic?...

With new episodes starting up a mere two weeks ago, Cartoon Network has suddenly pulled DC Nation from its scheduling until January of next year. Giancarlo Volpe, a producer on Green Lantern: The Animated Series, had this to say on the subject: “Apparently Cartoon Network preempted it in celebration of their 20th birthday. Their logic, not mine. I am very disappointed.” Not surprisingly, the backlash has already begun, with criticism of the decision appearing on the DC Nation Facebook page (including one individual that responded to a poll asking fans to name their favorite supervillain with “Cartoon Network executives").

Right now, the media is flooded with superheroes, almost to the point of saturation. Comic book films have become the new summer blockbusters, networks are scrambling to find caped vigilantes that will appeal to the general adult viewing audience, and kids’ networks all have a variety of comic book-related animated series in their schedules. And with so many of the upper-tier heroes having hogged the spotlight for so long, we’re finally getting to see some of the lesser-known crime fighters get their due. One recent addition to Cartoon Network’s roster is the Dcau (DC Animated Universe) series Green Lantern, which follows the adventures of the first Silver Age member of the Green Lantern Corps, Hal Jordan. The series so far has focused on the Corps fighting the Red Lanterns (whose abilities are drawn from rage, as opposed to willpower like the Green Lanterns), who are led by Atrocitus,...

Giancarlo Volpe serves as producer of fan-favorite series Green Lantern: The Animated Series, which recently wrapped up it's first season. The show will return "this fall" alongside Young Justice: Invasion with new episodes, so I went ahead and asked the producer what we can expect from the show this fall. Although he didn't reveal anything too specific, he does reveal some details about Anti-Monitor, new Lanterns, and more. Q:You worked on Avatar: The Last Airbender. What are your thoughts on The Legend of Korra? I love it! Besides being friends with (co-creators) Mike Dimartino and Bryan Konietzko, I'm also big fans of their work. I really admire how they're able to break all the rules of what a kid's show is supposed to be, and do it so masterfully. Their story telling style is very unconventional, and they take their work so seriously. My only regret is that...

Since it's debut in March, Green Lantern: The Animated Series has built an incredible fanbase from both comic and non-comic fans alike. The series is to return in September alongside Young Justice in the DC Nation programming block. Last season's finale saw Team Interceptor dealing with a Red Lantern army who found their way through the Maelstrom to attack Oa. In the images below, you can see Peter Markowski's concepts for the Lighthouse and The Maelstrom. [Click To Enlarge All Images] You can see some more pieces at his blog. Meanwhile, Zak Plucinski has released his intial designs for Tomar-Re and B'dge, who was later finalized into Ch'p. You can see both characters in action by watching the Comic-Con sizzle reel for Season 2. Producer Giancarlo Volpe (who I'll be interviewing soon) has posted this collage on his Tumblr. When Green Lantern: The Animated Series returns to Cartoon Network this September, Hal Jordan will find Earth a different place. After defeating the Red Lantern Corps. in the far reaches of space Hal looks to be in a good place but not so fast warns producer Jim Krieg. He warns "not to get too comfortable with the happiness Hal is feeling in his heart, because we're just gonna mess up his life again." Hal's life takes a turn for the worst when he finds that while he's been out in space a new Green Lantern for Sector 2814 has been found in Guy Gardner, a character probably most famous for a run-in with Batman. "He's like Hal Jordan cranked to Level 10," said producer Giancarlo Volpe. "He's that much cockier, more brash and a womanizer." Guy Gardner will be voiced by Diedrich Bader of Batman: The Brave and...

When Cartoon Network's Green Lantern: The Animated Series returns in September, Hal Jordan is finally back on Earth, having vanquished the rage-feuled Red Lantern Corps. But producer Jim Krieg cautions the audience "not to get too comfortable with the happiness Hal is feeling in his heart, because we're just gonna mess up his life again." That begins as soon as Hal gets home and finds he's been replaced as the Green Lantern of Sector 2814 by Guy Gardner, a character well-known to comic-book fans as a tactless and hotheaded bruiser. "He's like Hal Jordan cranked to Level 10," says producer Giancarlo Volpe. "He's that much cockier, more brash and a womanizer."

The latest DC hero to hit the small screen is Green Lantern, as a part of the DC Nation Block on Saturday mornings on Cartoon Network. The Green Lantern Animated Series looks to make amends and bring Hal Jordan into a palpable medium outside of comics. They’ve chosen a new style to do it in, using computer-generated imagery and tapped some of the greatest comics in the character’s lore as the launching point. After five episodes, it appears that another DC hero has made a successful leap into animation. BuzzFocus had the pleasure speaking exclusively with producers Giancarlo Volpe and Jim Krieg to talk about the first season and how Jordan’s brightest day on TV is yet to come.
Was there concern to moving to Saturday morning after Young Justice along with the Man of Action cartoons like Ben 10 made Friday night a destination point for cartoon fans?...

Among the star guests at WonderCon 2012 were the cast and crew of hit TV shows Fringe and Alcatraz, plus the producers behind DC Nation - Cartoon Network's new Saturday morning segment dedicated to the superheroes from DC Comics.
Fringe is now in its fourth season and although its ratings dipped after it was moved to Friday nights in the USA - a slot notorious for killing off so many shows - there is a genuine optimism from those involved that it will get renewed for a fifth season. I would like to my add my own hope to that.
Speaking to reporters (via Spinoff Online) at WonderCon, John Noble, who plays Walter Bishop, said: "The overriding feeling is we're on the cusp of being one of the great science fiction shows of all time. We all want to finish it. We don't want to leave people going 'What? I've watched this for four years!

Hoping to take flight far more than the recent film adaptation is Green Lantern: The Animated Series.
It's just started airing as part of DC Nation - the new one-hour programming block from Cartoon Network, Warner Bros Animation and DC Entertainment.
You might well wonder why they would create a TV series about a character whose live-action, big-screen incarnation did not exactly glow at the box office. Maybe it's an attempt to compensate for that failing, to show they can do it right, and perhaps to generate a stronger audience awareness that sets the stage for a movie sequel or reboot in the near future.
Whatever the reason, Green Lantern: The Animated Series seems to be making fans happy so far and a sneak peek at some of the upcoming episodes has been shown at this weekend's WonderCon 2012 in Anaheim, California. The footage is embedded below.

Giancarlo Volpe, the producer of the upcoming Green Lantern: The Animated Series, recently spoke with Newsarama about what fans should expect from the CGI series when it airs a special one-hour sneak peek on November 11th. The show will be the first CGI-animated series to be based on a DC Comic book and will make it’s official debut on Cartoon Network in Spring 2012.
Speaking about his knowledge of the comics –
I kind of lost track of it over the years; I’m not sure why. In recent years, especially with all these superhero movies are coming out, it’s really hit that nostalgia for me. I wasn’t the biggest Green Lantern fan. To be honest, I didn’t know a lot. Thankfully, a friend of mine told me, if you’re going to read Green Lantern, read the Geoff Johns stuff. So I ordered all of those graphic...

Talking to Newsarama, producer of the upcoming Green Lantern: The Animated Series Giancarlo Volpe has revealed a ton of new details about the show. There's much, much more to be found over at the site (including how much of the series will be set in space) by clicking on the link below. Green Lantern: The Animated Series will debut this coming Friday at 7 pm on Cartoon Network. On The Inclusion Of The Red Lanterns In The Upcoming Series: I guess that partially had something to do with the fact that Geoff Johns is so involved with DC creative right now. When I was brought on for this project, it was already sort of decided that it would be Red Lanterns, but I wouldn't be if surprised if Geoff maybe made that suggestion. I actually really kind of believe in keeping it modern and keeping it current. If we would have...

Recently, we had the chance to speak with Giancarlo Volpe, producer on Green Lantern: The Animated Series. For those of you who don’t know, the new series will be in CG and will launch entirely new story arc that differs from the feature film. This will be the first major comic book adapted series that will be done entirely in CG. In this interview, Volpe tells us how this series will differ from other cartoons as well as Warner’s prior Green Lantern home movie releases. Since this series will not start with an origin tale like most stories, Volpe talks about getting right into the action as well as where the story with the Red Lanterns will naturally progress through future seasons. Also, this series will give more focus to the Lantern Corps and in particular Kilowog. Check out the interview below and be sure to let us...

Deadline Comic-Con TV correspondent Gary Hodges: The worst-kept secret at Comic-Con, and at the Green Lantern: The Animated Series (Cartoon Network/Warner Bros) panel, was that Conan O’Brien and his alter ego The Flaming C would crash the party. Attendees politely sat through an episode of the new series (premiering spring of 2012) and waited at least a few minutes before flatly asking the panel (Bruce Timm, Giancarlo Volpe and Jim Krieg) about Conan during the audience Q&A session. Finally, they introduced “some other footage”: the trailer to The Flaming C. (“From the creators of Batman: The Animated Series and the Masturbating Bear.”) O’Brien received a standing ovation and spent the remainder of the panel’s time doing what he does so well: making fun of the audience, making fun or himself, and being surprisingly agreeable to even the strangest requests (he doled out a hug to...

Arriving this October is Batman: Arkham City, in which Gotham's slums are used to create a prison community that the caped crusader must enter to stop Two-Face from executing Catwoman.
And in more DC Comics-related goodness, a month earlier sees the arrival of a new TV show featuring Green Lantern.

If past years are any indication, Comic-Con will begin releasing its official 2011 panel schedule later today (Wednesday) with the schedule for Preview Night, Wednesday, July 20. If that happens then we can expect them to follow suit for the rest of the days, so that Thursday will see the release of the Thursday of Con schedule, etc., through Sunday.
Once the official schedules are posted these “TV and Movie Panels and Screenings Updates” will be scaled back to just the date, time, title, and location, since the rest of the information and So Much More (including comics panels, autograph signings, etc.) will be available on the Comic-Con schedule link we’ll provide. Consider this, then, the last of the extremely long posts, and hopefully we’ll be getting that official schedule soon.

Information added to this update includes Locke & Key, Dexter, Shameless, Homeland, Archer, Wilfred, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, Sons of Anarchy, Shark Night 3D, Haywire, The Raven, Immortals, Thanks to THR...
