Fellipe Barbosa Moves Out of Casa Grande
By Alex Simon
Brazilian cinema has traditionally been a mix of fantasies about the bourgeois class (Dona Flor and her Two Husbands) or dark tales of life in its slums, the flavelas (Pixote). Fellipe Barbosa delivers a debut feature that takes a serio-comic look at the changing face of the upper class in his country, with Casa Grande, winner of the Rio De Janiero International Film Festival’s Best Film prize, which opens November 15 at Cinema Village in New York and debuts online simultaneously via Fandor.
Casa Grande tells the story of a posh Rio family whose carefully-manicured façade is slowly crumbling as father Hugo (Marcello Novaes) runs out of money after a series of bad investments go south. Meanwhile, his teenage son Jean (Thales Cavalanti) attends a fancy prep school and is thinking about college, until finding love with a girl from...

Influenced by legendary names in the movie poster trade such as Amsel, Drew Struzan, John Alvin, the brothers Hildebrandt, and Tom Jung, artist Ciara McAvoy works almost exclusively in oils for her much sought-after movie posters. However, she has built a broad repertoire of skills in other media (acrylic, watercolor, graphite, charcoal, and pastels) as well as storyboarding, animation, character design, and matte painting. She studied at L'École Nationale Supérieure des Beaux-Arts de Paris, where she obtained her Diplôme Supérieur d'Art Plastique (D.S.A.P). Later, she expanded her artistic skill set to include costume design and historical fashion, which now play an integral supporting role in her posters and illustrations. She describes her modus operandi as “photorealism applied to movie posters.”
Her most recent work is the poster for Paul McGuigan’s Victor Frankenstein, set for release in November. The trailer for the film, which...

Bill Cosby, once the personification of family values as affable-yet-stern dad Dr. Heathcliff Huxtable on The Cosby Show, is once again facing allegations that he sexually assaulted multiple women.
Et spoke with one of his accusers, as well as the NPR host who asked the comedian point blank about the allegations last weekend.
News: Bill Cosby Alleged Rape Victim Speaks Out
Former publicist Joan Tarshis is the latest woman to come forward with allegations against Cosby, claiming that he assaulted her on two occasions in 1969. She explained to Et's Kevin Frazier why she stayed silent for so long.
"I want to talk about this now and I want to really support the other women who have gone through this," she told Kevin, explaining, "Now with people coming out..., it's being handled differently."

Bill Cosby is staying mum on the rape allegations against him. After the comedian refused to engage with NPR host Scott Simon on the topic this past Saturday, Nov. 15, his lawyer issued a statement explaining Cosby's silence. "Over the last several weeks, decade-old, discredited allegations against Mr. Cosby have resurfaced," John P. Schmitt said in the statement, which was posted to the Cosby Show star's website on Nov. 16. "The fact that they are being repeated does not make them true. Mr. Cosby does not intend [...]...

Bill Cosby stops speaking when NPR asked about rape allegations When “Weekend Edition’s” Scott Simon brought up the allegations in an interview taped last week but aired this morning, he was met with silence. Things aren't looking too good for Bill Cosby. The comedian stayed completely silent when he was asked repeatedly about the rape allegations he's being faced with during an interview with NPR on Saturday, Nov. 15. NPR host Scott Simon asked the Cosby Show star, 77, about the shocking claims that have resurfaced recently while interviewing Cosby and his wife Camille about an exhibit at the Smithsonian National Museum of African Art. Bill Cosby has been remarkably consistent with his strategy on the 13 rape allegations against him: stonewall. In his first public interview since Twitter had a field day turning him into a meme, Cosby went on NPR's "Weekend Edition" with his wife, Camille, to chat about his African art collection. Host Scott Simon asks, "This question gives me no pleasure, Mr. Cosby, but there have been serious allegations raised about you in recent days." To which we hear dead silence, followed by some narrating from Simon (ah, radio):Meanwhile, one of Cosby's accusers Barbara Bowman wrote a piece in the Washington Post called "Bill Cosby raped me. Why did it take 30 years for people to believe my story?" Bowman writes that she was a 17-year-old actress when she met Cosby in 1985 and he began sexually assaulting her. In a CNN interview about her experiences with Cosby, Bowman said the star...

She’s not exactly the most modest singer in the game, but Katy Perry is tired of sexy songbirds showing skin to get attention.
During her interview with NPR’s Scott Simon, the “Hot N Cold” songstress noted that the trend of flashing flesh is pretty played out.
"Like females in pop -- everybody's getting naked. I mean, I've been naked before but I don't feel like I have to always get naked to be noticed. But it's interesting to see..."
"I'm not talking about anyone in particular. I'm talking about all of them. I mean, it's like everybody's so naked. It's, like, put it away. We know you've got it. I got it too."
Katy also made sure to admit her own indiscretions in the past. "I've taken it off for -- I've taken it out here and there. And I'm not necessarily judging. I'm just saying sometimes it's...

Katy Perry wants all of those female pop stars getting naked on stage or on camera to put their clothes back on. The “Roar” singer bemoaned the “strange world” in which established singers are getting “naked to be noticed,” in an interview with NPR over the weekend to promote her new album, “Prism.” “I’m not talking about anyone in particular. I’m talking about all of them. I mean, it’s like everybody’s so naked,” Perry told host Scott Simon. “It’s like put it away. We know you’ve got it.

Losing a parent is, obviously, one of the most painful experiences one can endure. NPR's "Weekend Edition Saturday" host Scott Simon chose to deal with that pain, in part, by live-tweeting from his mother's deathbed. Some saw it as a beautiful tribute to Simon's mother and a testament to the power of social networking. Others saw it only as a tribute to Simon's narcissism. Also read: Kidd Kraddick, Radio Host, Mourned by Ryan Seacrest, Kelly Clarkson Some tweets were funny; many were a frank description of what the end of life is...

Motion Picture Academy to expand its ranks: "The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is aiming to expand and diversify its ranks by relaxing a cap on membership that has restricted new admittances since 2004. The academy has about 5,800 voting members; in recent years, fewer than 200 people have been invited to join annually. The number of openings is essentially determined by how many members have retired, resigned or died. In the last decade, the overall ranks have not grown by more than 30 members a year." Los Angeles Times The Wall Street Journal's Barbara Chai talks with NPR's Scott Simon about what to expect from the upcoming Tony nominations. TV Guide's Michael Logan handicaps the race for Best Drama at the Daytime Emmys. He cheers "The Bold and the Beautiful" for its episode submissions, and thinks "The Young and the Restless" could still be nominated despite mediocre episodes and a "bloody dreadful" year.

As a white, liberal thirty-something stereotype, I obviously listen to a lot of National Public Radio (and American Public Media). Besides the Internet, it's where I get most of my news. It's also the best way to educate yourself for daily games of @Qrank. I spend a lot of time with these people, and over the years, I've developed certain relationships (Note: I am not about to ask you to donate). For instance, I don't give a damn about business and finance news, but Kai Rysdall is my favorite public radio personality. If I spend any time in the car over the weekend, I look forward to listening to "Wait, Wait Don't Tell Me," and for reasons that escape me, I usually end up listening to "Car Talk," too, even though I have no interest at all. If Terry Gross is not interviewing a jazz musician or a novelist writing...

Following the shocking revelation on him being replaced by Don Cheadle in "Iron Man 2", Hollywood actor Terrence Howard straightens things out in a recent interview. Talking to NPR's Scott Simon for Weekend Edition about his debut album "Shine Through It", the 39-year-old admits that he has discovered about the recasting saying, "Yeah, I found that out, too."
The "Pride" actor further fesses up that the news still came as a big surprise to him and that Marvel didn't give him any explanation on their reason to go on with different actor on the sequel. "It was the surprise of a lifetime," he said. "There was no explanation. [The contract] just...up and vanished."
Though not indicating the real reason behind Marvel's decision, Howard is explicit on expressing his disappointment. "I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and...

I think we were all a little surprised by the move this week that saw Terrence Howard replaced in the Iron Man franchise by Don Cheadle. Cheadle is a great actor, no question about it, but the change seems both sudden and unnecessary.
Marvel hasn't said a word about it, but now Howard has.
Talking to NPR's Scott Simon on Weekend Edition, Howard - who was promoting his new album Shine Through It - discussed how he found out that his services were no longer needed for Iron Man 2.
"It was the surprise of a lifetime. There was no explanation...I read something in the trades implicating that it was about money or something, but apparently the contracts that we write and sign aren't worth the paper that they're printed on, sometimes. Promises aren't kept, and good faith negotiations aren't always held up."
