Anita Sarkeesian wants to talk about That Time When.
And by That Time When, we mean her new web series–an original production by creator-owned streaming service Nebula and Sarkeesian’s first show since her 2013-2017 YouTube series Tropes vs. Women in Video Games.
For those unfamiliar, Tropes vs. examined the prevalence of common tropes like the stereotypical damsel in distress in video games, and making it catapulted Sarkeesian into the spotlight as a central target of the misogynist Gamergate movement. Like other women in Gamergate’s crosshairs, Sarkeesian was swamped with rape and death threats, and understandably has been leery of returning to making videos on the internet at all, let alone on YouTube.
That’s why she decided to make them on Nebula instead, she says. Nebula is a 5-a-month streaming service founded in 2019 by creator network Standard. It hosts content from around 160 self-described “education-y” creators, including Lindsay Ellis,...

Norman Lear and Brent Miller are set to executive produce an upcoming series about the 2014 Gamergate scandal. Mind Riot Entertainment is behind the project, which will follow the experiences of journalist, game developer and computer programmer Brianna Wu, who was one of the targets of the vicious online harassment campaign. Wu will co-write the series with Mind Riot’s head of development, J. Brad Wilke, while Lear and Miller are attached through their Act III Productions banner, according to Deadline. Gamergate was an online harassment campaign that began in August 2014, targeting women in the video game industry, notably Wu and fellow game developer Zoë Quinn, plus feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian. The campaign promoted sexism and anti-progressivism in video game culture and included disinformation, doxing, threats of rape, and death threats. According to Deadline, the series will trace the origins of the controversial intimidation campaign “from the perspective of multiple,...

Mixed reality, the merging of the real and virtual worlds, is slowly changing how we work, how we play, and how we communicate. Now, two women are using it to change how we share meals as well.
Remnant is an immersive, interactive dinner experience that pairs food with technology to tell a story. It’s the brainchild of Feminist Frequency executive director Anita Sarkeesian and Magic Leap interaction director Aleissia Laidacker. A self-described foodie, Sarkeesian was inspired to create the project after hearing Laidacker give a talk about mixed reality and how it can bring digital content and game design into the real world. She pitched the idea for Remnant about a week later.
Laidacker was immediately interested. Her father is a chef, and she once briefly considered giving up game development for her own culinary career. For her, it was an opportunity to combine two of her passions.

A showcase for four women fighting back against online physical and emotional harassment, Netizens is a film of undeniable power. Directed by Bully writer and co-producer Cynthia Lowen, the documentary explores everything from trolls launching grotesque personal attacks to the costs of revenge porn on its victims. Centering on a media critic, a lawyer, and two victims striking back against the patriarchy, the film takes aim at judgmental institutions and the simple-minded men with too much time on their hands and too much access to information.
The film first introduces us to up-and-coming New York attorney Carrie Goldberg, who takes the film crew to the scene of a recent case: a video has gone viral of a 13-year-old girl being raped by her classmate. The solution of the victim’s school focuses on the video–confiscating students’ phones, erasing videos–but they’re ignoring the needs of the victim in the process.

A mere sampling of some the films mentioned in Feminist Frequency’s thorough history of Hollywood whitewashing: “Breakfast at Tiffany’s,” “Apache,” “Murder Over New York,” “Prince of Persia,” “Aloha,” “Gods of Egypt,” “Ghost in the Shell,” “Dr. Strange,” and “A Beautiful Mind.”

Host Anita Sarkeesian walks us through these examples while laying out in simple terms just why such images are so harmful:
“One of the most insidious tools of white supremacy is its insistence on whiteness as the racial default or as an ethnic ’empty’ category. White people manage to exist in a kind of invisible zone, where they are assumed to not have a race or ethnicity. This allows whiteness to wear the cultural, religious, or social signifiers of other ethnic communities, as if they were merely accessories to be purchased at the mall.

It would appear that any scandal or controversy that emerges in modern times has a ‘gate’ suffix slapped on the end of it. From Climategate to Rathergate – the latter of which underpins Robert Redford’s Oscar hopeful Truth – each title apes the political storm that surrounded the Watergate scandal of the late 1970s. Hyperbolic though they may be, such monikers in no way undermine the pertinent issues that each controversy unearths, and that’s of particular importance when it comes to 2014’s Gamergate.
Rearing its ugly head in the video game industry, the parade itself was a warped harassment campaign against a number of women in the medium, including developers, writers and voice actresses. Promoting sexism out of turn, Gamergate was effectively stirred by a lynch-mob, one who erroneously banged the drum for such archaic views across the echo chambers of 4Chan, Twitter and Reddit, despite claiming to be on the hunt for journalistic corruption.

Just about a year since the beginning of the Gamergate “controversy,” conditions for women in gaming are, in many ways, as bleak as ever. The Joss Whedon Twitter storm rumbles on...
Feminist Frequency's Anita Sarkeesian has denied criticising the director's portrayal of Black Widow in Avengers: Age of Ultron and being responsible for his decision to quit Twitter.
Whedon recently described reports that he quit the social network due to criticism from feminists as "horses**t", adding that he just needs some peace as he begins writing again.
Sarkeesian replied: "Good to know I didn't personally drive Joss off Twitter with all the stuff I Didn't say about Avengers 2 *eyeroll*"
Whedon has been criticised by some Avengers fans and critics for using the character in a typical 'damsel in distress' role in a few key scenes late in the film.

A few months ago, the unfolding furore surrounding Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg's comedy The Interview probably seemed quite funny.
The film, about a TV host (played by James Franco) and his producer (Rogen) who are instructed by the CIA to assassinate North Korean leader Kim Jong-un, enraged the country's government. It was, North Korea's foreign ministry spokesman said, "an act of war."
"Making and releasing a movie on a plot to hurt our top-level leadership is the most blatant act of terrorism and war and will absolutely not be tolerated," read a statement from a North Korean news agency. "If the Us administration allows and defends the showing of the film, a merciless counter-measure will be taken."
When the story emerged in June, Seth Rogen didn't seem particularly worried.

Sega has pulled out all the stops for the new entries in the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Not only are there two new games for the Wii U and Nintendo 3Ds, Sonic fans have been treated to a new animated cartoon on Cartoon Network and a new title from Archie Comics, for a total of four if you count the magazine-sized Sonic Super Special. Not bad for a game series that over two decades long.
So you can’t expect me to review just one of them, can you?
Both the video games feature a new villain, Lyric, a serpentine scientist from the dawn of time, the last of a race known as the Ancients, which if you think about it, is an odd thing to name yourselves since you’re not ancient when you name yourselves. In addition to Sonic and his able sidekick Miles “Tails” Prower, Knuckles the...

On last night's episode of The Colbert Report, the Comedy Central host took on Gamergate, gaming's biggest controversy. The segment also included a surprise guest—feminist media critic Anita Sarkeesian. As is pretty well documented, Gamergate is a diffuse movement that bills itself as a "consumer revolt" geared toward addressing the perceived ethical failures in video game journalism. Make no mistake, there are many well-intentioned people under the Gamergate banner that are honestly in it for that reason—although, as Colbert points out, Gamergate's biggest claims are baseless, and despite proponents' best efforts, the Gamergate hashtag has becoming synonymous with...

Anita Sarkeesian, whose video blog "Feminist Frequency" and YouTube series "Tropes Vs. Women in Video Games" have explored the often dubious roles of female characters in video games, appeared on "The Colbert Report" to discuss the, uh, effing terrifying threats women gamers face for having dissenting opinions, wanting change, and pretty much existing in general. Sarkeesian herself had to cancel a planned lecture at Utah State University after that venue received anonymous terrorist threats. This violent misogyny is at the center of what's being termed GamerGate, and Stephen Colbert invited Sarkeesian to his show to discuss the roles of women both as players of video games and as playable characters in video games. At first Colbert's contrarian, nyah-nyah approach on this topic wasn't working for me, but eventually he earned some good laughs as Sarkeesian dutifully offered up great insight. Love when he says, "Do you hear all that applause for a male-dominated space?...
