- He served with the Royal Engineers in the Middle East 1951-1954, where he learned about surveying. He later joined the Falkland Islands Dependencies Survey, the forerunner of the British Antarctic Survey. He mapped about 45,000 square miles of the Antarctic.
- For his North Pole feat, he took a route from Alaska to the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen. He covered 3,720 miles in 16 months, and reached the pole in April 1969. The data collected on this expedition is still being used by scientists to measure the extent of melting of the polar ice cap and the effects of climate change.
- He allegedly declined a C.B.E. (Commander of the Order of the British Empire) before accepting Knighthood of the British Empire in 2000 for his services to polar exploration.
