After a decade of era defining American high school comedies (mostly from John Hughes) and tawdry, derivative innuendo-heavy teen sex farces like Porky’s, Meatballs, Beach Balls, Screwballs and Oddballs etc., in 1989 director Michael Lehmann and writer Daniel Waters warped the teen high school comedy with their feature debut, Heathers. This cutting, provocative slice of poisoned cherry pie had cult written all over it from the outset with its weaving of provocative themes such as teen suicide, mass murder and psychosis into the fabric of the high school comedy. Heathers was nothing like anything that had come before it. Aside from its critical success and fast growing fan-base, Lehmann and Waters’ debut left a minimal dent in the box office; raking in just $177, 247 on its opening weekend, despite doing well later on VHS.

I love a heartwarming, feel-good romance story just as much as the next person, but sometimes, it’s those doomed cinematic relationships that tend to stick with you the most. One of the more interesting ill-fated couples I recently encountered was Rob (Cian Barry) and Holly (Abigail Hardingham) from Nina Forever. The new couple must endure the looming presence of Rob’s ex-girlfriend, Nina (Fiona O’Shaughnessy), who died recently in a car accident and happens to show up anytime they become intimate.
The pitch-black comedy touches on a lot of the complications that come with modern relationships and all the proverbial baggage we endure as a result of our previous romantic entanglements. It really struck me throughout the story just how well directors Ben and Chris Blaine perfectly explore those themes in Nina Forever, making me realize that some of my very favorite movie love affairs, particularly from the 1980s,...

When I was a kid, the one toy I wanted more than any other was a Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em Robots set. But Santa wouldn’t pony up, and birthdays came and went without a glimpse of those big-ass blue and red robot fighters.
When I finally got the chance to play the game, well… two robots punching each other until one’s head pops off can only be entertaining for so long.
Guillermo del Toro‘s Pacific Rim resembles Rock ‘Em Sock ‘Em in more ways than one. First, it’s obviously got huge robots beating the crap out of other huge things. And while the IMAX-ready promise of Rim‘s bigger-than-big smackdowns is irresistibly audacious, in actuality the film delivers your standard brand of summer movie chaos, only the heads that pop off are bigger.

This year promises a bumper crop of hip-hop films – here's how to get up to speed with the genre

I was never sold on The Kids Are Alright and I never got the joke about Spinal Tap – but I understand the power of a good hip-hop documentary. For hip-hop fans who weren't around to witness battle raps in the Bronx or block parties in downtown NY, hip-hop docs are a valuable commodity. This year will see two new additions to the genre: Can't Forget New Jersey looks at the migration of hip-hop out of NY and there's also For The Record: The Story of Latin Hip Hop. If the hip-hop forums are to be believed, there is also a film in the pipeline about Eazy-e's life. Those of you lucky enough to be within striking distance of New York can get...

Are you ready for giant mecha robot-suits and giant alien monsters to fly right into your face? The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Guillermo del Toro has succumbed to pressure from Warner Bros. and will be converting "Pacific Rim" into 3-D.
The Sisterhood lives on! Us Weekly reports that the wedding of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds in Mount Pleasant, South Carolina last Sunday was attended by the bride's "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants" co-stars: America Ferrera, Amber Tamblyn and Alexis Bledel.

Internet reaction to the news that Bravo is developing a remake/reboot of "Heathers" was swift and terrible on Wednesday (Sept. 12). As well it should be.
"Commence vomiting up a stomachful of hull-cleaner mimosa and crash to your death through a coffee table," says Grantland.
"What's your damage, Bravo?" asks Indiewire.
"There's no way that can be good. Good grief, there's just no way," laments The Atlantic Wire.

First rumored in 2009 as a Fox series, then promptly forgotten about as revenge fantasies against privileged teenagers were shelved in favor of regular fantasies involving privileged teenagers, the TV adaptation of Heathers is now reportedly back on at Bravo, cable's dead gay son. According to The Hollywood Reporter, producer Jennifer Bicks—who recently mined cancer for occasional chuckles on The Big C—remains intent on doing the same for teenage suicide, where TV's strict maxim of "don't do it" promises its own Big Fun. In fact, the synopsis already hints at the way Michael Lehmann's ...

If you consider yourself a fan of rap, and especially the history of rap, do yourself a favor and get Big Fun in the Big Town. Forget about the quality of the documentary itself—which is simply passable—the real value of this film is in the unbelievable footage contained in the mediocre doc. It is practically a treasure trove of the who's who of hip hop, back when their household status are still in their future.
At just 40 minutes long, this is the product of a Dutch television skeleton crew that set foot to Harlem, New York in 1986 to interview local artists about the emerging rap culture. What point it was trying to make is anyone’s guess, but the Dutch seems to be enamored enough by America's black youth to want to highlight it somehow (see also: The Black Power Mix Tape). 26 years after it was filmed, Dutch director, journalist and rap aficionado Bram Van Splunteren's Big Fun in the Big Town is finally being released to worldwide audiences. A documentary on the origins of hip hop filmed in New York in 1986, just as the genre was getting noticed—but not, notes Van Splunteren, being taken seriously—on an international scale, Big Town features interviews with pioneers like Russell Simmons, Run-dmc, Grandmaster Flash, Doug E Fresh and LL Cool J from before they became household names.

According to a study, Angelenos have more sex, on average, than any other city in the United States: 135 times/year. Yet Southern Californians, as well as sexually active people around the country, don.t publicly talk about sex as much as one would think. Popular TV actress and host Lisa Rinna joins the Emmy Award-winning syndicated daytime talk show The Doctors on Thursday, May 10 to talk about her book, The Big Fun Sexy Sex Book (co-authored by Dr. Ian Kerner, also on the show): .There are so many books about how to look, your diet and your exercise regimen. This [sex] is just as important or maybe more!. The Doctors co-host and Ob-gyn Dr. Lisa Masterson agrees...

"Lisa Rinna uncensored" doesn't even begin to describe the 48-year-old bombshell's newest venture. Rinna has authored a new sex bible, "The Big Fun Sexy Sex Book," and had no problem letting her mind wander to the gutter when I asked her to reveal her favorite sex positions and the most well-endowed celebrity in Hollywood.
Why is it hard to talk about sex?
People were taught that sex is bad, especially women. If you’re a good girl, you don't do it and you don't talk about it and if you do, you are a bad girl, which is ridiculous and is why there are so many hang-ups and shame around sex.
How old were you when you lost your virginity?
I lost my virginity at 16.
How many men have you slept with?
I have only slept with five men in my life!
What’s your favorite position?

Considering it's where most of us (bar the weird home-schooled kids) spend our crucial formative years, where we have our first fights, our first loves, our first tentative steps into adulthood, it's no surprise that high school has long been a popular setting for movies. A range of genres (though generally leaning towards comedy) have taken place in those hallways, particularly from the 1980s onwards, when John Hughes, among others, made an entire career out of the lives and loves of 15-18 year olds.
The latest film to head back to class is "21 Jump Street" (review here) the big-screen reboot of the '80s TV show, which stars Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum as youthful-looking cops who are sent back to high school in order to bust a drug-running ring. While you might assume this to be another lazy remake, you'd be very wrong, as Tatum, Hill, co-writer Michael Bacall,...

“I mean, she’s actually evil… not high school evil!” Unfortunately for Needy Lesnicky (Amanda Seyfried) no one else recognizes the true nature of her Bff (“best friend forever”) Jennifer Check (Megan Fox), a high school student-turned demonic killer in this mixed bag of a horror flick from Juno scribe, Diablo Cody.
Designed to make some members of the audience feel considerably aged within the first five minutes, it certainly does take time to catch up with Cody’s slang-infused high school girl speak. This includes terms like “shuttie” (which apparently is what you say to someone to shut them up) and personality trait descriptions that include the gem “freaktarded” (well, you can probably figure that one out). Whether or not this is how any high school student actually speaks is highly debatable, but one can already envision the “slang dictionary trivia track” option running underneath the movie for its DVD release.

Dear Diary: My blogger-angst bulls-- now has a body count. Everybody's sad...but it's kind of a weird sad. The rumors just won't stop. First a phantom wacky 'Heathers' musical starring Kristen Bell, then a hypothetical 'Heathers' movie remake, and now a proposed 'Heathers' TV series (announced by Fox today, ugh). I have no control over myself when these obnoxious fairy tales inundate my slushied-out brain. Are we going to prom or to hell? You know what, Heather? I think I'll just watch my 'Heathers' DVD instead. Forever. Yep! That's what I'm going to do. Go ahead and make a Heathers TV show. Yeah! Great. I'll believe it when I Don't see it. In the meantime, I'm just going to pull up a sofa and eat some BBQ Corn Nuts and watch Christian Slater and Winona Ryder murder some teenagers. The Old Way.
