This article is the eighth in Slackerwood's second series about the Texas Archive of the Moving Image (Tami) video library. For an overview of the Tami site, refer to this article in the first series.
"They say Mary Kay does not play favorites. That's not true. They do. We're all favorites!"
-– Fictional Mary Kay Cosmetics beauty consultant Susan Anderson
It's tempting to mock the subject of this month's Tami Flashback videos, Mary Kay Cosmetics. After all, Mary Kay epitomizes the beauty-industrial complex, which is built on the absurd and often cruel practice of telling women they aren't attractive unless they conform to conventional standards of beauty.
But this article is not about the way our culture treats women; it's about Tami videos. So I'll refrain from mocking the Dallas-based cosmetics giant (it will be a challenge) and focus on three of its corporate films from the late Seventies and early Eighties.

Say what you will about Bill O'Reilly, he welcomes a fair amount of criticism on his own show. Case in point, during a discussion on the IRS tea party targeting scandal, guest Charles Krauthammer heavily disagreed with O'Reilly's attempt to question the supposedly apolitical credentials of former IRS commissioner Douglas Shulman by invoking the involvement of Shulman's wife, Susan Anderson, in Occupy Wall Street. Krauthammer told O'Reilly it's unfair to go after Shulman with "guilt by association."...

Do you know of a local energy-saving project in need of funding? Chevrolet wants to help. The company announced this week a plan to invest $40 million in clean energy projects across the U.S., with the goal of cutting 8 million metric tons of carbon dioxide emissions. That's the equivalent of a year of electricity use in 970,874 homes--an effort designed to help Chevy offset emissions from cars that it sells.
"This is a big deal--as significant as cutting annual carbon emissions to zero for all the businesses and households in Portland," said Susan Anderson, Director of the Bureau of Planning and Sustainability for Portland, Oregon, in a statement. "Cities are working diligently to reduce carbon emissions, and this is the sort of leadership initiative that brings private and public efforts into alignment."
Communities and schools will have the opportunity to apply for funding, and decisions will be made by government organizations...

MasterChef Australia has been slammed for being unhealthy. The reality television series, which achieved record-breaking ratings when it was launched last year, has been accused by the Heart Foundation of being the reason why butter sales have increased by 9.3% since 2009. Healthy weight director Susan Anderson told The Daily Telegraph that the cookery series "does certainly seem to be contributing" to the obesity and heart problems (more)...
