David Hemingson’s The Holdovers at Focus Features won original screenplay and Cord Jefferson’s Oscar-winning American Fiction from Amazon MGM Studios took adapted honours at the strike-delayed Writers Guild Awards on Sunday.
This was a second major adapted screenplay award in relatively short order for Jefferson after last month’s Oscar win.
The Holdovers prevailed in an original screenplay category that included Barbie and May December, but not the Oscar winner Anatomy Of A Fall, rendered ineligible here because it was not produced under a Writers Guild of America (WGA) contract.
The best documentary screenplay award went to Errol Morris for The Pigeon Tunnel.

Shrinking co-creator Brett Goldstein (Ted Lasso) is stepping in front of the camera in Season 2.
Sources tell Deadline there had been multiple attempts to have Goldstein appear in the Apple dramedy but things didn’t pan out. When the perfect role came along—which btw is currently top secret—he couldn’t say no. He is billed as a guest star in Season 2, which is currently in production.
Shrinking follows grieving therapist Jimmy (Jason Segel) who starts to break the rules and tell his clients exactly what he thinks. Ignoring his training and ethics, he finds himself making huge, tumultuous changes to people’s lives … including his own. In addition to Segel, the series stars Harrison Ford, Jessica Williams, Christa Miller, Lukita Maxwell, Michael Urie, Luke Tennie and Ted McGinley.

What’s old is new again at NBC which has given a pilot green light to Friends-In-Law, a multi-camera comedy from The McCarthys creator/executive producer Brian Gallivan, The Conners executive producer Tom Werner and Warner Bros. TV.
NBC originally developed and ordered Friends-In-Law to pilot last development season. Gallivan’s script is now being re-piloted. I hear that Pamela Fryman, who helmed last year’s pilot, has been approached about returning as director.
Written by Gallivan, Friends-In-Law centers on Brian and Jake, polar opposites who must quickly figure out how to coexist when their respective best friends decide to get married.
The 2018 pilot starred Devere Rogers and James Davis as Brian and Jake, respectively, with Nicole Parker and John Gemberling as their alter-bound friends.
NBC so far has picked up four comedy pilots for next season, two single-camera, including the Kenan Thompson starrer Saving Kenan, and two multi-camera.
Gallivan is repped by UTA.

A small town, dysfunctional family, desperate mayor, and fake miracles. According to Deadline, that's the gist of ABC's latest project, a half-hour adaptation of popular Austrian comedy Braunschlag.
Created by David Schalko in 2012, the Austrian series follows the attempts of a small-town mayor to save his nearly bankrupt town amid the pressure of mobsters and a family in shambles. The series has become a critical and audience favorite in its home country.
This is not the first time an American TV network has tried to adapt Braunschlag. Last fall, Deadline reported that Fox had made a commitment to a pilot starring Rob Riggle, but the project never went into production.
Now, ABC's pilot adaptation will have a female lead instead, with The McCarthy's creator Brian Gallivan and The Goldbergs executive producer Seth Gordon involved.

Should we feel bad for Eddie Huang? The restaurateur whose memoir about his childhood inspired the current ABC sitcom "Fresh Off the Boat" went on a multi-post Twitter rant after this week's episode, complaining that, since the pilot, the show has drifted far from the reality of his own experience, to the point where "it got so far from the truth that I don't recognize my own life."
That's certainly unfortunate, even for a guy who received a tidy sum for the TV rights to his autobiography. No one wants to see his or her experience distorted and broadcast to millions. Then again, what did he expect? It's a network sitcom. It's generally going to avoid any bleak reality that can't be resolved in 22 minutes.

It looks like The McCarthys will be moving to TV heaven. Hey, maybe they'll live next door to The Millers? CBS has yanked The McCarthys, the freshman drama starring Laurie Metcalf and Joey McIntyre, from its schedule early. According to The Futon Critic, the show was set to air on Thursday, Feb. 5 and Thursday, Feb. 12, but has been replaced by The Big Bang Theory reruns. The comedy as set to hit the bench on Thursday, Feb. 19 to make way for the Two and a Half Men finale with the new Thursday schedule being The Big Bang Theory, The Odd Couple, a Big Bang Theory rerun and Mom. The McCarthys was created by Brian Gallivan and also starred Tyler Ritter, Kelen Coleman, Jimmy Dunn and Jack McGee. The series...

Tyler Ritter is tackling the starring role of CBS's new sitcom “The McCarthys,” about Ronny McCarthy (Ritter), an openly gay man who's surrounded by a sports-obsessed family and is even recruited by his father to be his assistant high school basketball coach. The series is based — although loosely — on the life of series creator Brian Gallivan, with Ritter standing in for the “Happy Endings” alum. Brian Gallivan's new comedy “The McCarthys” revolves around a gay man named Ronny in Boston who's surrounded by a sports-obsessed family. It's a situation Gallivan knows well, having grown up in the same circumstances himself. But Gallivan, a veteran of lamentably canceled ABC series “Happy Endings,” cautions that the new series — which stars Tyler Ritter, Joey McIntyre, Laurie Metcalf and Jack McGee, and premieres Thursday at 9:30 p.m. — isn't a carbon copy of his own experience. Finally, a multi-cam series I can get behind. CBS's new comedy “The McCarthys” is well written and terrifically cast. Star Tyler Ritter is effortless in his delivery and grounds the comedy that can take family bonding to extremes. Comedian, actor and writer Brian Gallivan created the show and has said it's based on his life. It stars Ritter as Ronny McCarthy, an openly gay guidance counselor and square peg in his working class, basketball-obsessed Boston family. We finally had our first network cancellation of the fall season last week, when ABC dropped the ax on "Manhattan Love Story." Had the Alphabet waited one more week, we'd have made it through the first season in a while where all the new fall shows got to debut before one was canceled. But that was not to be, and instead we have our final new network fall show (with plenty more on the bench for midseason, or whatever the broadcast nets are willing to call it these days) coming up this week, along with a new cable comedy. Both, oddly, feature Jack McGee in a supporting role (the result of cable and network shows often filming on different schedules), and that — along with the fact that I don't feel strongly about either one at this stage — is enough excuse to put them together in the same post for a...

[In case you've Forgotten, and as I will continue to mention each and every one of these posts that I do: This is *not* a review. Pilots change. Sometimes a lot. Often for the better. Sometimes for the worse. But they change. Actual reviews will be coming in September and perhaps October (and maybe midseason in some cases). This is, however, a brief gut reaction to not-for-air pilots. I know some people will be all "These are reviews." If you've read me, you've read my reviews and you know this isn't what they look like.] Show: "The McCarthys" (CBS) The Pitch: "Ethnographically Specific Multi-Cam Family Comedy #432" Quick Response: When I did my Take Me To The Pilots on "The Goldbergs," I took the show to task a little bit for all of the shouting and Adam Goldberg told me on Twitter that his real family is just loud. I can't argue with that. Well, "The McCarthys" is a passion project for creator Brian Gallivan and it's at least semi-autobiographical, so who am I to say that his actual family isn't a loving hodgepodge of Boston Irish stereotypes and that family get-togethers don't become a non-stop stream of gay jokes that really might have been edgy and pushing the conversation forward in 1974, but seem stale and dated in 2014. And if Brian Gallivan says that, honest-to-goodness, he and his mother bond over their love of "The Good Wife," I can't say, "Lies, you've inserted at least three...

CBS's “The McCarthys” won't be showing the darker side of the gay experience — at least not in its first season. “I don't think we'll hit the dark in the first 13 episodes,” show creator Brian Gallivan told reporters at Thursday's Television Critics Association press tour. “I think it's probably going to be pretty light, probably.” He then said as the audience laughed, “My life is just always fun as a gay man. So, that's what I'll reflect.” Also read: CBS’ Nina Tassler Says Post-'Colbert’ Series May Not Be a Talk Show Gallivan based “The McCarthys” after his own experience as a gay man.

The networks’ pickups and cancellations have been done and their new schedules have all been announced as we wrap another upfront season. Like in a Walking Dead episode, among the countless bodies strewn around, a few are still standing. Here are the pilots and cancelled series that I hear are still alive or hoping for a resurrection in a new home. Related: Upfronts 2014: Comedy Sputters, Diversity & Adaptations Flourish; Other Trends, Oddities Pilots left in contention at the networks they were developed at include comedies Cabot College at Fox, where it has been eyeing a six-episode order; Sober Companion, also at Fox; Gaffigan at CBS; and Old Soul at NBC; as well as drama Agent X, whose pilot is being retooled, at TNT. ABC Brian Gallivan comedy also is a possibility. CW’s Supernatural: Bloodlines is dead but the network will take another stab at a Supernatural spinoff next season.

CBS unveiled its new fall programming yesterday, but only a few new shows made it to the lineup — CBS is all about returning favorites, so there aren't a lot of open slots. In fact, there's only one new comedy for fall (Odd Couple is scheduled for mid-season), and the new dramas are pretty by-the-book CBS shows. Behold:The McCarthys is the only sitcom of the bunch, and it's about a tight-knit Boston family. The show was created by Brian Gallivan, whom you might recognize as Sassy Gay Friend. Scorpion is about geniuses. Katharine McPhee plays a waitress. NCIS: New Orleans is what it sounds like. Scott Bakula who will be sorely missed on Looking. Stalker comes from Kevin Williamson and fits right in with this season's new crop of violent murder shows. If you were wondering which woman-in-peril show would straight-up light a woman on fire in a two-minute promo,...

What’s the best new show coming to CBS? Well, we have high hopes for Vince Gilligan and David Shore’s Battle Creek, but as CBS Entertainment Chairman Nina Tassler explained during the network’s upfronts presentation, that doesn’t premiere until midseason. For fall, CBS knows what you want: More NCIS! Your guide to non-ncis offerings also appears below.
NCIS: New Orleans
NCIS is the biggest drama on TV, so you can’t blame CBS for trying to milk it for an endless array of spin-offs. This one focuses on Special Agent Dwayne Pride (Scott Bakula), who leads a...

All week long as the other networks have been frantically renewing and canceling established shows and picking up new shows, CBS has been the cool kid leaning up against the wall in a leather jacket smoking a cigarette. [Yes, I'm picturing Pre-Upfronts Week as a '50s problem drama.] Late Friday (May 9), CBS decided to get in on the action, announcing seven series pickups, five dramas and two comedies. [Actually, it's kinda only six series pickups, since Vince Gilligan's "Battle Creek" had been acquired as a 13-episode series commitment pre-pilot.] On the drama side, CBS is moving forward with the "Battle Creek," the planted spinoff "NCIS: New Orleans," "Stalker" (formerly "Untitled Kevin Williamson"), "Scorpion" and "Madam Secretary." On the comedy side, CBS has ordered "The McCarthys" and "The Odd Couple" to series. It's unclear which shows are headed for midseason and which are targeted for fall. And CBS isn't expected to announce any additional pickups or cancellations today. So let's get down to the details on CBS' new shows for the 2014-15 season,...

ABC has given a pilot order to an untitled single-camera comedy from creator Brian Gallivan, Sony TV and Will Gluck‘s studio-based Olive Bridge Productions — the auspices behind another family comedy pilot this season, CBS’ The McCarthys. The ABC project, which had a high-seven-figure penalty, centers on an overworked father dreaming of being “on vacation all year” who decides to uproot his family from the city and move them to New Hampshire where they open a group of tourist cottages. And where they rarely, if ever, feel like they’re on vacation. Gallivan, who hails from New England — he grew up in the Boston area, where he taught middle school language arts before embarking on a comedy career — wrote the script and executive produces with Gluck and Olive Bridge’s Richie Schwartz. Mike Sikowitz has taken on his first assignment under the rich new overall deal he just signed with Sony Pictures Television. The comedy writer-producer has joined the studio’s CBS multi-camera comedy pilot The McCarthys as executive producer/showrunner. The McCarthys, from Sony TV and Will Gluck’s Olive Bridge Entertainment, was retooled as multi-camera after shooting a single-camera pilot last season. Written/co-executive produced by Brian Gallivan, The McCarthys revolves around a big, sports-crazed Irish Catholic clan in Boston and the gay son (Tyler Ritter) whose greatest sin is not his sexuality but his desire to spend less time with his family. Sikowitz will exec produce alongside Olive Bridge’s Gluck and Richie Schwartz. This marks a return to multi-camera comedy and to CBS for Sikowitz, who previously served as executive producer on Sony’s long-running CBS comedy series Rules Of Engagement. He is repped by ICM Partners and Michael Gendler.
