After embracing the pulp-style narrative in their novel Grim Death and Bill the Electrocuted Criminal, Mike Mignola and Tom Sniegoski are reteaming to bring that same pulp-infused fun to the world of comic books with Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land. Featuring artwork by Craig Rousseau, the first issue of the four-part miniseries will be released on February 17th from Dark Horse Comics, and we caught up with co-writer Sniegoski in a new Q&a feature to discuss his latest collaboration with Mignola, including exploring Hellboy's formative years and instilling The Hidden Land with a pulpy 1930s atmosphere.
Thanks for taking the time to answer questions for us, Tom, and congratulations on Young Hellboy: The Hidden Land! This marks your latest collaboration with Mike Mignola, with whom you co-wrote Grim Death and Bill the Electrocuted Criminal. How did your writing reunion come about for this project?

It’s that time of year when the Christmas/ Holiday/ Winter Solstice/Hanukkah/ Kwanzaa Specials come out. Not all different ones of course, but these days the books try and be inclusive and include all the above. DC have cleverly sidestepped the yearly outrage at using either Christmas or Holidays in the title. Life’s too short. I’ve been enjoying these seasonal specials in one shape or another for many years, going back to the late 70’s. I still have most of them and still read them every year in the run up to Christmas. Digital now means I don’t even have to fight my way into the correct comic storage box too, an annual tradition I’m pleased to let go. The stories are generally light and a bit of fun, but that’s the spirit of the season.

Eric Powell’s The Goon is a one-of-a-kind comic book character, a brawny, unconstructed lug who has a dive-bar soul and an alley-fight face. This year, remarkably, is the 20th anniversary of the cult character, who has tussled along he way with ghouls, a giant squid, mobsters, mutants, deranged scientists, demons, and a pie-eating skunk ape. For the award-winning Powell, the anniversary celebration has been chance to connect with fans (with an ambitious book tour and a barrage of tie-in releases) as well as peers (through a bevy of unprecedented collaborations).
In the all-new Goon comic book series now underway, Powell has teased that he would be joined by some notable names from the comics world. For issue No. 5, which goes on sale July 31, the writing chores were divided by Powell and Thomas Sniegoski (The Fallen) while the illustrations are by Brett Parson (Tank Girl). Emboldened by the success of Gotham and other comic properties, Fox is going back to the comic well again, albeit a smaller well.

Graham Yost of The Americans and Justified will write the pilot and produce alongside Neal Moritz, Pavun Shetty, Toby Jaffe, Stephen Christy and Ross Richie. Fox is describing the deal as including a pilot script with a significant penalty if its not picked up to series. In other words, it's highly likely that this will see the light of day.

Bone: Out from Boneville Tribute Edition
By Jeff Smith
192 ages, Scholastic Graphix, $14.95
Bone is a phenomenon that just keeps growing, it seems. Jeff Smith’s self-published debuted in 1991 and charmed readers who discovered the black and white fantasy. However, he found a brand new audience when Scholastic added the series, in color for the first time, to their Graphix imprint. There now are the nine volumes, Rose (with art by Charles Vess), Tall Tales, Bone Handbook and three illustrated prose novels from Tom Sniegoski.
To celebrate the tenth anniversary of this incredibly successful partnership, Scholastic is releasing next week a hardcover Tribute Edition of volume one. The complete, still-charming is on hand but there is also additional material. We start with the 10-page poem “An Ode to Quiche”, written by and critiqued by the monsters who plague the fellow from Boneville. There are nine pinups culled from the other...

In honor of the release of Christopher Golden's Joe Golem and the Drowning City in limited edition hardcover on October 3 and Baltimore: The Play, his collaboration with Mike Mignola, on November 21, Dark Horse editor Scott Allie interviewed the award-winning author for us.
Topics covered in the interview include Golden's interpretation of the term "dark fantasy," his upcoming project with True Blood author Charlaine Harris, vampires in our current culture, his influences, the scariest thing he's written, and Lots more. Check it out below, and look for more guest blogs from Scott Allie over the coming weeks.
Scott Allie: Can you explain “dark fantasy” to me?
Christopher Golden: The easy approach would be to say it's a merger of horror and fantasy, but that's not always true. For me, dark fantasy is fantasy in which nasty things happen. For people who've read my original novels, dark fantasy would be easy to recognize.

Sunday July 15th is the last day of Comic-Con 2012, and most of us will be completely worn out looking like Spider-Man in the image above. Chances are he's asleep under that mask. Sunday has always been a cool down day for us, we kind of just try to relax a little bit more and enjoy it. That doesn't mean their isn't anything to see or do though!
We've got a Fringe screening and Q&A, Doctor Who, Buffy the Vampire Slayer 20th Anniversary, Sons of Anarchy, the annual Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical screening, and more! I've always wanted to go the Buffy musical sing-a-long, but am usually trying to leave San Diego before it starts.
Just a little reminder, we will be having our annual GeekTyrant meet up this year to meet our readers, which is something we always enjoy doing! That will take place on Wednesday night, and...

Comic-Con Sundays are typically light on horror, and this year is no exception although once again our favorite panel, "Supernatural", is heading to Hall H. Here are the genre highlights as well as info on the 36th annual Robert A. Heinlein Blood Drive.
One thing we can't stress enough is to keep checking the Sdcc website for updates as nothing's set in stone until the event actually starts happening.

Since the color editions of Bone began appearing nearly a decade ago, Jeff Smith’s delightful series has become synonymous with Scholastic’s Graphix imprint. In 2009, Scholastic concluded a deal that allows them to publish expansion material set in the Bone universe such as the Tall Tales collection that came out a while back.
Last year, a new series, Quest for the Spark, began but what made this unique was that these books would be illustrated prose works. Tom Sniegoski, who collaborated on Tall Tales, has been penning the stories while Smith (with colorist Steve Hamaker) has provided the covers and spot illustrations. Volume two is due out momentarily with volume three coming this summer.
When this was first announced, Smith noted on his website, “I was a bit unsure about this project when Tom first suggested it, but when I read the first book I laughed so hard, I agreed to do it.

It’s been several years since a film deal was made with Universal to turn the graphic novel “Talent” into a movie, but now some more headway is being made. "Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog" co-creator Zack Whedon, brother of Joss Whedon, has been hired to write the script for the film.
The report comes from Variety, which speculates that having Whedon brought on board will "stir momentum." After all, things hadn’t really been moving for “Talent” in quite a while.
Whedon’s writing credits include the TV shows “Deadwood” and “Fringe.”
A few other names are already attached to the "Talent" adaptation, too. Matt Platt will be producing the film along with Ross Richie and Andrew Cosby.

Zack Whedon (the brother of Joss Whedon) has been hired to adapt the graphic novel Talent by Christopher Golden and Tom Sniegoski for Universal Pictures. The studio has been sitting on this project for a long time, but they are obviously ready to movie forward with brining it to life.
The story follows a professor who, after surviving a plane crash, finds he has inherited the abilities of the passengers who have died. A secret group hunts him down when he begins to use those abilities.
Whedon has worked on TV shows such as Deadwood, Fringe and Rubicon. He also worked on Dr. Horrible Sing-a-long Blog. This should be a great film project for Whedon to work on, especially for his first feature film. For those of you unfamiliar with the comic, here's a little more information on the story.

TV writer Zack Whedon has been brought on-board Universal's latest comic book venture. He will adapt Christopher Golden and Tom Sniegoski's graphic novel Talent for the big screen. Apparently Universal have had the project for a while but are only now getting moving, hoping brining in Whedon(Deadwood,Fringe) will build momentum. Bone: Tall Tales
By Jeff Smith with Tom Sniegoski
128 pages, Scholastic Graphix, $10.99 (paperback), $22.99 (hardcover)
Scholastic’s Graphix imprint is wisely repackaging all the Bone material, turning it into a uniform library for the young adult readers who can’t get enough of the denizens of Boneville. The latest such entry is Tall Tales, which is the color edition of 2000’s Stupid, Stupid Rat-Tails: The Adventures of Big Johnson Bone, Frontier Hero, which in turn collected a 1999 miniseries. The key differences are that “RIblet” is not included here while a story produced for the late, lamented Disney Adventures magazine is added along with some new material.

Scholastic’s Graphix imprint is wisely repackaging all the Bone material, turning it into a uniform library for the young adult readers who can’t get enough of the denizens of Boneville. The key differences are that “RIblet” is not included here while a story produced for the late, lamented Disney Adventures magazine is added along with some new material.

Scholastic has announced that Jeff Smith will soon be expanding the popular Bone graphic novel series. The first book, Bone: Tall Tales, will be released Summer 2010, and will be a collaboration between Jeff Smith and Tom Sniegoski. The book will feature new art and stories about favorite Bone characters.
The duo will also collaborate on the highly-anticipated Quest for the Spark Trilogy, an expansion of the Bone world. The books, Bone Quest for the Spark: Book One (Fall 2010), “Bone Quest for the Spark: Book Two” (Spring 2011), and “Bone Quest for the Spark: Book Three” (Summer 2011) represent the first time Smith has continued the adventures set in the valley since the publication of Rose, the prequel to the Bone series, which will be released by Scholastic/Graphix in August 2009.
“I always said I would find a way to draw more Bone stories, and now I have,” said Jeff Smith. “Tom...

Good news for big fans like myself of Jeff Smith's Bone. Comic Book Resources just posted a press release from Scholastic promising four new graphic novels, the first new story in that universe since 2002's Rose. Don't take my word for it:

Universal Pictures has Talent. The studio won the rights to the Boom Studios comic book in a heated bidding war that involved five studios including DreamWorks and Warner Bros. Pictures. Written by Christopher Golden and novelist Tom Sniegoski and drawn by Paul Azaceta, the four-issue miniseries follows a 34-year-old college professor who is the lone survivor of a plane crash. He discovers he has mysteriously taken on the "talents" of those who died in the crash and finds that the attributes are a blessing and a curse.
