A new documentary looks back at the 80s toy craze and the battle over who really created the dolls in the first place
Black Friday is said to have originated in Philadelphia in the 1960s, when members of the city’s police department used the term to describe the chaos that broke out when droves of suburbanites flooded downtown to shop on the day after Thanksgiving. The American tradition swelled to monstrous proportions in the early 1980s, when grainy and horrifying footage of citizens knocking each other to the ground became a fixture of holiday-weekend local news.
These sharp-elbowed consumers were keen to scoop up Atari consoles, Swatch watches, and Cabbage Patch Kids, the doughy dolls with close-set eyes and the signature of a man named Xavier Roberts inked on their bums. Film-maker Andrew Jenks’s zesty Billion Dollar Babies, narrated by 80s child and Doogie Howser, M.D. star Neil Patrick Harris,...

This week’s episode of What Really Happened, a popular podcast hosted by documentarian Andrew Jenks, is set to explore the concept of the “27 Club,” which posits that artists die with improbably frequency at the age of 27. The term emerged from the deaths of musicians such as Jim Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, Kurt Cobain and Amy Winehouse. While it appears to be a simple statistical anomaly, Jenks claims that there’s more to the story.
“Some say this is nothing more than a media-manufactured term,” he says in a trailer for the episode.

Only 28 years old, Holiday Inn had been out for nearly 50 years by the time Corbin Bleu was born. But that didn’t stop the former High School Musical star and Dancing With the Stars contestant from stepping into the role made famous by Fred Astaire in Broadway’s musical adaptation of the film.
In fact, Bleu brought a modern flair to the character of Ted Hanover, a professional dancer who loses his partner to an oil tycoon and later sets his sights on friend Jim Hardy’s holidays-only hotel performer and love interest, Linda Mason. In one particular number from the Broadway show, “Let's Say It With Firecrackers,” Bleu performs a solo tap dance with the accompaniment of firecrackers with so much pizazz and style that even Astaire would have been impressed.

Chef Carla Hall has one goal for the holidays: for everyone to slow down.
“We’re so busy doing stuff,” says The Chew host and former Top Chef contestant, who is perhaps best remembered for her philosophy of “cooking with love.” “The busier I get, the more family is important to me. I have to carve time out to make sure that everything else stops around me and that I get this time to spend with family.”
It’s why Hall is partnering with T.J. Maxx, Marshalls and HomeGoods to launch the Gift My Gathering campaign, which aims to inspire families to press pause and celebrate what truly matters -- each other -- by offering the chance to win their own holiday celebration. “This campaign says, ‘Forget the stuff. Let's look at each other. Let's have a conversation. We're going to celebrate each other.’ And I think that's the greatest gift,” she explains.

Striving to achieve and maintain your goals is a continuous struggle people are often forced to contend with throughout their lives. But when those dreams harrowingly clash with someone else’s objectives that cross your path, it becomes devastating when your ambitions are derailed as a result. But when that person has wrongfully been accused of such a heinous crime, and was unjustly sent to prison for almost a decade, just so prosecutors can garner and maintain a conviction on the highly publicized case, it’s understandable that people can emotionally identify with them. Director-producer Andrew Jenks powerfully crafted a sympathetic view of Ryan Ferguson, the subject of his new crime documentary, ‘Dream/Killer,’ while showcasing what he has had to endure after being wrongfully convicted. CNN Films has acquired director Sharon Liese's "The Gnomist" out of the 2015 Tribeca Film Festival. The short film, which follows three women on a journey deep into the woods of Overland Park, is expected to premiere this Fall. Produced by Liese and Oscar winner Cynthia Wade and shot by Ty Jones, the film takes us to Firefly Forest, where fairy dwellings fit in the hollows of trees began mysteriously popping up in Spring 2013. For these three former strangers, the suburban Kansas forest takes on a psychic healing power. CNN launched its inaugural online short film series in March as part of its aggressive push into the realm of original video content. Additional films for the Fall series will include shorts from Andrew Jenks and Roger Ross Williams. CNN Films recently released the campus rape doc "The Hunting Ground" and will launch the Oscar-nominated "Glen Campbell: I'll Be Me" later this year.

"It's About A Girl" is a new web series from filmmaker Andrew Jenks, charting the experience of looking for love in your twenties -- and what happens when your expectations don't quite match up to reality. A new episode will be posted here on HuffPost Women each week.
During the sixth chapter of Andrew Jenks' "It's About A Girl" our nameless protagonist's fantasy relationship gets serious. He and his girlfriend look at a drop-dead gorgeous apartment (one that the vast majority of twenty-somethings in New York City could never afford to rent), and they seem blissfully happy in their potential new home. In reality, our protagonist finds that visiting a new person's apartment can be fraught with anxiety.

"It's About A Girl" is a new web series from filmmaker Andrew Jenks, charting the experience of looking for love in your twenties -- and what happens when your expectations don't quite match up to reality. A new episode will be posted here on HuffPost Women each week.
The protagonist's fantasy in the fifth episode of "It's About A Girl" is all about the past. We see videos from his and his girlfriend's (quite adorable) childhoods. The clips of each character growing up are compared, showing how their individual life experiences have merged into a shared one. Yet the protagonist's reality is his and his alone.
In a Q&A with the Huffington Post, Jenks spoke about how he relies on music and imagery to convey a message, as he does in episode five. He said:
I tried to remind myself this was just a nice love story -- nothing bigger than that.

In the third chapter of Andrew Jenks' "It's About A Girl" our nameless protagonist's fantasy involves happily cavorting about town with his date. In this week's installment of "It's About A Girl," the protagonist's fantasy involves elegant rooftop drinks with the beautiful woman he met last week. Unfortunately, his date is pretty far from his reality -- which involves making epically awkward eyes at a girl on the subway.
In a Q&A with the Huffington Post, Jenks reflected on how frustrating it is to be surrounded by interesting strangers but be unable to summon the courage to speak to them: "Man, what if I had the guts to go up to one of these women? I'm a normal guy. I can talk and be cool.

Andrew Jenks is best known for his MTV series, World Of Jenks, but his most recent project provides an introspective experience rarely offered on TV. Jenks is the creator and star of It's About A Girl, a very clever web series that seeks to draw a line between dream and reality. While the premise may sound like a bad Inception knock-off, It's About A Girl is actually quite clever in the way it juxtaposes fantasies against the mundane nature of real life. The series follows Jenks as he pursues the girl of his dreams, but instead of painting an idealistic picture where that girl falls into his lap, Jenks instead plays a character who can only meet his true love (played by Taryn Southern) through a TV screen. The best part of It's About A Girl's debut episode is its lack of dialogue. Many web series feel obliged to...

Zap2it: How did the idea for "World of Jenks" come about?
Andrew Jenks: The idea was to give young people going through tough circumstances a voice that would not get a voice as wide as MTV. One issue I was keen on delving into was a young person facing death because there are obviously a lot of 20-year-olds that are going through terminal illness, or something that hard. And it would be tough to relate to that. ... So we did all this research and met with different camps that take in young people over the summer, and we could not really find a young person that I felt really did the trick. And at one point in a meeting, I said, "Why don't we just Google 'young person cancer'?" And a blog came up. It was Kaylin, and I was reading the blog, and holy cow, she is...

For those who miss the weekly goings on of the "Jersey Shore" cast, the majority of them are getting back together March 23, at a concert thanking the young volunteers of the "Spring Fix" program, which helped to rebuild parts of New York and New Jersey, following Hurricane Sandy, the Daily Record reports.
The event will take place at Six Flags Great Adventure, in Jackson, N.J. Most of the gang will be appearing, with the exceptions being Mike "The Situation" Sorrentino and Pauly D. Joining them will be Andrew Jenks, star of another MTV show, "World of Jenks."
The day will be highlighted by a performance from R&B star Ne-Yo, as well as the band Sammy Adams and Timeflies. The event, which is sponsored by MTV, follows a telethon the cast had immediately following the storm.

Watching a documentary about someone, we get an idea of who he is and what the filmmaker wants to impart.
But watching a season devoted to the same three subjects over the course of a year gives viewers a deeper understanding, which is precisely documentarian Andrew Jenks' goal for "World of Jenks."
The series, airing Mondays on MTV, is different from last season's of the same name. This is one hour, rather than half an hour, and instead of focusing on different people each segment, this examines the battles three different people face.
Chad from Middletown, N.Y., is the only person returning from last season. He is autistic, funny and profane, and Jenks follows him as he graduates from high school.
D-Real is a terrific dancer from Oakland, Calif. Once a drug dealer who did time, he's buried many people close to him.

You don’t really know someone until you’ve walked a mile in their shoes.
That mantra is at the center of Andrew Jenks’ acclaimed documentary series for MTV, World of Jenks, which will return for a second season March 4. In 10, hour-long episodes, Jenks will follow three individuals struggling with difficult – and topical – problems over the course of a year. This season will focus on autism (with season one participant Chad continuing to show his day-to-day life), as well as a woman, Kaylin, dealing with cancer and D-Real, a dancer and Oakland resident who recently lost his brother to gun violence.
