Stars: Dane DeHaan, Jason Isaacs, Mia Goth, Celia Imrie, Ivo Nandi, Adrian Schiller, Harry Groener | Written by Justin Haythe | Directed by Gore Verbinski
Lockhart (Dane DeHaan) is a cocky young executive working for a New York financial services firm. The board summons him and explains that there are unsavoury business shenanigans afoot. The source is an ex-board member, Pembroke (Harry Groener), who recently went Awol at a “wellness” retreat in the Swiss Alps. Lockhart is tasked with going there and bringing Pembroke home, so the board can pin the illegal activity on him.
But when Lockhart reaches the retreat, he struggles to find answers – or, indeed, Pembroke. He tries to depart, but a car accident leaves him with a broken leg. He’s stuck in the old castle, with its secret history, its “vitamin”-quaffing patients, and its menacing overlord, Dr. Volmer (Jason Isaacs). Lockhart meets Hannah (Mia Goth), a...

Chicago – Gore Verbinski is no stranger to the spooky. He always creates these tense, terror-filled scenes that effectively frighten us. His films, from “Ring” to “Rango”, each are compelling enough to keep our attention, not matter how absurd they transform into. Boy, does he ever deliver in the gorgeously grotesque “A Cure for Wellness.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
I grew up in what can easily be considered the golden era of fucked up cartoons. My formative years were filled with outrageous, absurdist shows like “Ren & Stimpy,” “Rocko’s Modern Life,” “Aaahh!!! Real Monsters,” and “Courage the Cowardly Dog.“ Each of them probably has something to do with my macabre sensibilities and Gore Verbinski perfectly mirrors my own predilections. The most powerful part of any Verbinski is the visual storytelling and “A Cure for Wellness” proves that he works best when the camera tells the story for him. The best way to describe his...

Normally in the early months of a given year, the mainstream wide releases leave a ton to be desired. Sure, there are decent enough ones if you look hard enough, but they’re usually safe genre outings, with more often than not the quality movies being independent releases. Ambition and ambitious filmmakers are in short supply. As such, even though A Cure for Wellness is only sporadically successful, the effort and uniqueness being put forth is worthy of commendation. Filmmaker Gore Verbinski goes all out in this hybrid body horror/mystery/thriller, leaving no odd stone unturned. I didn’t especially like it, but I’m oddly glad that it exists and that I saw it. Opening this week, it might just be a cult classic in the making. The plot is fairly hard to follow, unnecessarily so, even if it starts out rather simple. It follows an ambitious, overworked,...

"He's a patient, not a prisoner." 20th Century Fox has debuted a brand new, full-length trailer for Gore Verbinski's A Cure for Wellness, a mysterious, creepy supernatural thriller about a "wellness" spa in the mountains in Switzerland that seems to have some freaky tricks up its sleeves. The trailers we've posted so far have all been very creepy, with lots of footage that should make you squirm in your seat. Dane DeHaan stars as an employee sent to rescue his boss from the spa, only to discover something much more sinister going on. The full cast includes Jason Isaacs, Mia Goth, Celia Imrie, Adrian Schiller, Carl Lumbly, Susanne Wuest, Lisa Banes, Ivo Nandi and Magnus Krepper. Word from those who've seen this film already is that it's pretty damn good, and very disturbing. I'm glad to see Verbinski trying something new. Here's the full trailer (+ intl. poster) for Gore Verbinski...

This trailer has some of the most disgusting yet alluring imagery for this film yet, although there's not much footage to see. Just glimpses. I'm still quie curious. Check it out below. As Boardwalk Empire season 5 arrives on DVD, we chat to the man behind Charlie Luciano, Vincent Piazza…
Warning: this article contains Boardwalk Empire spoilers.
When Boardwalk Empire wrapped production last year it wasn’t without disappointment, not least because for some characters there was a sense that things were only just getting started. Chief among those was Charlie ‘Lucky’ Luciano, whose actor, Vincent Piazza, spoke to us about father figures, droopy eyes and reverse-engineering a Sicilian bad boy...
The end of Boardwalk is quite a big one for Charlie. We’ve seen him grow from the impatient young hothead of 1920 to someone a little more world-weary and considered. How did you approach the task of showing that ten-year growth while keeping true to the character?
Thank you for that. It was always the hope that we’d be able to get to the arc where he’s beginning to find...

Title: Sunken City Director: Ryan McLaughlin Starring: Hamilton von Watts, Monique Gabriela Curnen, Vinicius Machado, Ivo Nandi, Cyrus Farmer, Richard Tyson, Spencer Garrett, Maz Jobrani, Evelina Turen, Alyssa Julya Smith One of the true delights of the Julien Dubuque International Film Festival, where it recently picked up a prize for Best Use of Music, “Sunken City” is an almost perfectly modulated low-budget indie with a keen sense of place. In the blink of an eye, fortunes change. One week you’re up, the next week you’re down. It’s strange to see a seemingly unassailable man like Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg) down on his luck, but that’s exactly where we find the Manhattan gangster in this episode. It’s perhaps a shock just to hear through dialogue that Rothstein’s empire is crumbling, but the writing has been on the wall for a few months now, especially as revealed in “All In,” the episode where the gambler lost his shirt in one of Nucky Thompson’s (Steve Buscemi’s) Atlantic City clubs. "Why is it you don’t gamble?" Rothstein asks his valet Peter while at home, playing billiards in an introspective mood. “Because I don’t have the stomach for it,” the man responds. Rothstein tells a story of how he won the first time he gambled as a little boy,...

Arrow: Monday (October 21) at 8pm on Sky1
Rejoice, because shirtless training montages and scenes featuring blokes in tight-fitting lycra are imminent. Arrow is back and as unapologetically brash as ever, with the almost impossibly manly Stephen Amell returning as playboy-turned-superhero Oliver Queen.
But shockingly, when we return Oliver has decided to give up life as The Hood following the death of his pal Tommy last season and put himself back into exile, just as a vengeful, bloodthirsty gang of copycat vigilantes begin to take control of Starling City. Timing is not his strong point, evidently, but Oliver's still a dab hand at ass-kicking, and there's plenty of it in this opening double bill.

Thematically, we’re following a “North Star” considering guiding lights reunite several estranged members of the “Boardwalk Empire” cast, even if it's a bit of a mid-season episode lull. Perhaps the writers had to give audiences a reprieve after the sad suicide of Eddie Kessler last episode. “North Star” takes Nucky (Steve Buscemi) back to Florida to finish his land deals with Bill McCoy (Pearce Bunting) from earlier in the season and meeting him in the Sunshine State are his new partners Meyer Lansky (Anatol Yusef) and Charles “Lucky” Luciano (Vincent Piazza). And so new alliances are formed, Nucky, McCoy and the new Italian man in Tampa, Vincenzo Petrucelli (Vincenzo Amato). But old alliances also crumble. Luciano gets spooked by Petrucelli as he has ties to his boss Joe Masseria (Ivo Nandi). If Joe were to find out that Luciano was making side deals on his own there would be hell to pay.

As we’ve repeated almost like a maxim: The creators and writers of HBO’s “Boardwalk Empire” like to play the long tail game. And while it can be slow going in the moment at times, that planning, patience and vision usually pays off. Such is the case in “Margate Sands,” the finale of season 3 and the conclusion to the three-episode arc where creators rewarded audiences by blowing the doors off, causing the body count to rise. On the ropes all season long, it appeared that Atlantic City kingpin and bootlegger Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) would finally succumb to rival mobster Gyp Rosetti’s (Bobby Cannavale) attack. At the beginning of the season, Rosetti, a hot-headed gangster, was an irritation, but his hubris grew and grew and his meddling continued. When his counter-attacks backfired, his boss, New York mobster Joe Masseria (Ivo Nandi), essentially gave him an ultimatum (though Rosetti...

We won’t look this gift horse in the mouth too much, but “Boardwalk Empire” Season 3 went from a passive slow walk to a mild trot, then finally to an explosive gallop late in the game. Patient and sometimes meandering, the first half of the season took a while to get cooking, but the gloves are now fully off. Episode #11, “Two Imposters” is positively detonating, even compared to “The Pony,” the episode where a bomb killed Nucky Thompson’s (Steve Buscemi) mistress Billie Kent (Meg Steedle) in a failed assassination attempt on the Atlantic City kingpin. The nearly unhinged and sociopathic mobster Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale) has the blessing of Joe Masseria (Ivo Nandi), and he’s out for blood. Like an electric jolt, the riveting “Two Imposters” takes off like a shot, is a nail-biter throughout, and leaves the audience breathless by the end. When we last left off in "A Man,...

The one episode we take off and stuff happens. Apologies for being gone last weekend for "You'd Be Surprised," but we assume you'll live. In last week's episode sparks finally flew. Atlantic City bootlegging kingpin Nucky Thompson (Steve Buscemi) came to Jesus with his New York counterpart Arnold Rothstein (Michael Stuhlbarg) to discuss the violent loose cannon gangster Gyp Rosetti (Bobby Cannavale). Nucky called Gyp a wild dog that had to be put down, but Rothstein argued he was one of Joe Masseria's men (Ivo Nandi) and they had a truce that could not be broken. In the end, while Nucky and Rothstein landed more than a few insulting blows on one another, Rothstein's men, led by the hot-headed Benny Siegel (Michael Zegen) attempted to put a hit on Rosetti. Rosetti, revealed to be an auto-erotic asphyxiaphile, barely survived a slaughter that killed all his muscle. And so in episode #7, "Ging,...

There were rivalries born that will undoubtedly result in spilled blood, new career opportunities that could change the course of someone's life, and connections formed that give one a sense of purpose and belonging. The year 1923 will be a big one for the Boardwalk Empire cast of characters, the change going on in the country reflected in their lives and that change taking a while to get used to.

Castle's (Nathan Fillion) publisher, Paula (Debi Mazar) tells him about a new three book publishing deal to write about a 'British secret agent.' Castle has just launched his own character so why would he get involved with someone else's character? Then he realizes who that is and claims his entire reason for becoming a writer was this agent. His phone rings, Castle: "Another body must have dropped." Aptly put, seeing as the Db is found in a manhole. Perlmutter (Ayre Gross) puts Cod as blunt force trauma and she was killed two days ago. Ryan (Seamus Dever) asks if he can narrow it down. Castle arrives at the scene late and they tease him about the weird CODs he's just missed. Beckett (Stana Katic) joins in too, continuing on from last episode where she called him a pushover and seems he hasn't got the hint here either.

A man comes too on the floor of an apartment and the TV plays in the background, a scene about self defence and not being believed. He leaves on his bike. A jury and judge arrive to view a Cs and the judge is shot by a shooter on a bike. Mac (Gary Sinise) picks up his rolling cigar. Flack (Eddie Cahill) comments the criminal court judge was shot under the noses of the cops and the jury was sequestered. Judge Vinnie Corsica (Brad Blaisdell) was presiding over the Markov trial, a Russian mobster. Danny (Carmine Giovinazzo) talks about him being the "Sammy Bull of Russian organized crime and Markov has "a dozen bodies on him." Mac: "Looks like it just went to a baker's dozen." Groan that was definitely one of Stella's lines. Hawkes (Hill Harper) and Lindsay (Anna Belknap) process the Cs. Hawkes finds a smashed bullet. Three...

Viewers will finally learn the truth about Jacob and the Man in Black in the May 11 episode of "Lost". In the preview, the Man in Black says to Jacob, "Do you have any idea how badly I want to kill you?"
The official synopsis from ABC is kept relatively short, saying "The true motives of John Locke are finally explained." The preview shows Smocke showing two sides - light and dark, good and evil - using Othello seeds.
According to Buddy TV, there will be a bunch of new characters as well as returning ones in the episode. The teenage boy in the jungle is back and so is the Boy in Black. The description of these two young characters lead to speculation that the Boy in Black is the younger version of the Man in Black while the boy in the jungle is actually young Jacob.
