I don’t need to inform anyone that mainstream Hollywood entertainment is still in the grips of a franchise and IP based fervor. Mega franchises, sequels, reboots, requels, remakes – all of these have been the lion’s share of high profile releases for well over a decade now. Everything from the most recognizable franchises in film history to more niche pop cultural artifacts have been resurrected, dusted off, and had a new coat of paint air-brushed on.
Every day across social media the online film community seems to litigate “the state” of Hollywood.
Superhero fatigue. Franchise fatigue. You know the discourse. Personally, I take as much of a nonchalant attitude with all this stuff as I can. I have my peccadillos. I have my areas of agreement regarding “the state” of Hollywood. But at the end of the day I’m just…a dude. A dude who just wants to...

On the outside, Chucky may appear to be a harmless, pint-sized “friend to the end” Good Guy doll, but the popular toy houses the evil spirit of serial killer Charles Lee Ray. Debuting in the 1988 film Child’s Play, Chucky has sliced, stabbed, and slaughtered his way through five movies in an effort to possess a human form. 2004's Seed of Chucky marked his last sadistic endeavor, and ever since he’s been missing in action... until now. Produced, written and directed by Chucky's creator, Child's Play creator Don Mancini, Curse of Chucky finds the horror icon adding to his body count in the latest entry of the franchise. “Chucky’s been dormant,” explains Mancini. “We’ve wanted to do a new Chucky movie for a while. We did Seed in 2004; a couple of years after that, the big trend in the horror world was to do remakes. David Kirschner and I,...

It’s been twenty-five years since Charles Lee Ray first possessed a Good Guy doll in a Chicago toy store whilst on the run from the cops and in that time we’ve had a further four Child’s Play movies – the last almost ten years ago (has it really been that long?) – each of which has successively watered down the creepy tale of Chucky, taking the series from its tongue-in-cheek slasher beginnings to a mocking parody of its very own franchise. Thankfully Curse of Chucky, from series creator Don Mancini, returns to the “fun and fear” formula which made the original film such a success.

Universal recently sent me the upcoming Chucky: The Complete Collection Blu-ray Set, which includes Child's Play, Child's Play 2, Child's Play 3, Bride of Chucky, Seed of Chucky and the brand new Curse of Chucky. Last night around 8:45 or so I knew the second episode of "The Blacklist" was going to be on at 10 Pm, but I wasn't exactly slobbering with anticipation after last week's disappointing pilot. Not wanting to watch anything all that intellectually stimulating I decided to grab the box set and give this new Chucky film a watch. I think I made the right choice. Let's get one thing out of the way at the start, Curse of Chucky isn't a very good film. I don't think this will surprise anyone, even those that will say they enjoyed it. It's possible to enjoy a bad film and in the case of Curse, the enjoyment will largely...

Well, here's a nice switch. After a pair of sequels in which raunchy comedy and silly splatter were much more important than anything resembling a legitimate scare or creepy idea, everyone's favorite killer doll is back with Curse of Chucky, a sixth chapter that clearly wants to be taken a bit more seriously. Or at least as seriously as one can take a movie in which a doll possessed by the soul of a serial killer stomps around a creepy old mansion and hacks people to bits.
Needless to say the Chucky films have always been tongue-in-cheek horror films. The first three entries -- Child's Play (1988), Child's Play 2 (1990), Child's Play 3 (1991) -- were sometimes suspenseful, occasionally scary, and frequently sprinkled with generous portions of gory bits. By the time we got to Bride of Chucky (1998) and Seed of Chucky (2004), the character had degenerated into a completely self-aware and self-mocking parody.
