Although the feature film “Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers” was released on Disney+ and not in theaters, director Akiva Schaffer knows the importance of seeing a movie with an audience, as proven by the film’s tastemakers screening at the D23 conference and its L.A. world premiere.
“At home, it’s so easy to have a look at your phone,” he tells Variety. “You can miss half the things because they’re visual in the movie, but then again, as somebody who’s put out those movies and had nobody in the theaters, that’s not any good either.”
He’s referencing the poor box-office performance of his last feature, “Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping” (2016), which he directed and starred in along with the other two members of musical trio the Lonely Island: Andy Samberg and Jorma Taccone. Since then, the film has garnered a cult following.

Paul Thomas Anderson was helping Haim prepare for their headlining set at Coachella in 2018 when the Academy Award-winning director of Boogie Nights, There Will Be Blood, and Phantom Thread turned to guitarist-singer Alana Haim with a thought. “He said, ‘I’m going to put you in a movie,’ ” says Alana, the youngest of the three Haim sisters. “I was like, ‘Ok. All right. I’ll be fine walking in the background of a movie.’”

In the wake of George Floyd’s killing by Minneapolis police, more than 700 actors, recording artists and entertainment and music industry organizations and their supporters have signed a letter urging swift passage of the Justice in Policing Act. The bill pending in the House of Representatives would ban chokeholds and no-knock warrants, limit military-style equipment on American streets and make lynching a federal crime.
The legislation would also make it easier to prosecute police misconduct and enable individuals to recover damages in civil court by eliminating qualified immunity for law enforcement officers who use excessive force. See the letter and its full list of signatories and supporters below.
Signers of the letter, which has been sent to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, include SAG-AFTRA, the Motion Picture Association, the Recording Industry Association of America, the Songwriters Guild of America and the Association of Independent Music Publishers,...

“I always wanted to play a character that was the opposite of the public’s perception of me — and of course make fun of myself,” The Weeknd told Variety about his guest appearance on Seth MacFarlane’s long-running animated series “American Dad,” which aired Monday, and, it’s safe to say he succeeded on all counts. In the episode — which The Weeknd, a longtime fan of the show, co-wrote — the singer revealed that despite his bawdy public image, he’s actually a virgin, and even sang a song about it.
While the song — which was written specifically for the series with Asa Taccone, who also co-wrote and co-produced Portugal. The Man’s smash “Feel It, Still” and has contributed to his brother Jorma’s group The Lonely Island — isn’t going to give “I Feel It Coming” a run for its money in the Weeknd-classic stakes, it’s distinctively him,...

Considering his moody and at-times dark public persona, it may come as a surprise to find out that The Weeknd is a devoted fan of TBS’ long-running animated series “American Dad.” So much, in fact, that he not only makes a guest appearance in the new episode that premieres Monday night, he even co-wrote the show — and will premiere a new song, written with Asa Taccone, specifically for the series.
Watch an exclusive preview of the show above.
Trailers and images from the episode — in which we will see “Stan abducting The Weeknd to teach Roger a lesson” — aired last week, but there are plenty of surprises in store, as he tells Variety in the exclusive interview below. The appearance is the latest in The Weeknd’s unusual but fast-growing acting resume, which includes a cameo (as himself) in Adam Sandler’s recent film “Uncut Gems,” a third appearance on “Saturday Night Live” in March,...

Danny Hoch's solo performance piece "Taking Over" previews tonight, January 21, 2009, and tomorrow night at 8 p.m. at the Center Theatre Group/Kirk Douglas Theatre. Opening night for the Obie Award-winning performer is Friday, January 23 (at 8 p.m.). Performances continue through February 22. The production is directed by Tony Taccone, artistic director of Berkeley Repertory Theatre. "Taking Over" is a riveting study of the effects of gentrification and how this is changing the face of many American cities. Hoch seamlessly transforms himself into the vividly diverse characters from his hometown, the Williamsburg neighborhood of Brooklyn, and into the real estate agents and developers who are shepherding radical changes into the district's character and nature. Filling the stage with compelling, impeccably drawn, multicultural portraits, Hoch captures the complexities of the transition of a poorer urban community, once vibrant and colorful - albeit crime and cocaine-ridden - into a culture that is wealthier,...
