Presidential hopeful Ron DeSantis once again called out Disney over Memorial Day weekend, and, come Tuesday morning, the hosts of “Morning Joe” were cracking up at the Florida governor’s assumption that invoking his feud with the company would help him in a state like Iowa.
During an interview with “Fox and Friends”, DeSantis argued that Iowans should vote for him over twice-impeached-once-indicted former president Trump, because Trump has “taken the side of Disney” and “I think a multi-billion-dollar company that sexualizes children is not consistent with the values of Florida, or the values of a place like Iowa.”
After playing that clip on Tuesday morning, the “Morning Joe” hosts and panelists were stunned before anything else.

Kirk Cameron took a detour on his normal route to bashing gays, blaming current church leaders and straights for ruining marriage. “When people get too focused on redefining marriage, you’re distracted from the bigger problem — fornicators and adulterers. If the people sitting in the pews are fornicators and adulterers, the church will destroy marriages much more quickly than those outside the church. When God’s people mock marriage, God doesn’t take that lightly. The church isn’t taking God’s definition of marriage seriously. It’s not other people sabotaging marriage that’s the problem.”

Civil unions come to Malta, judge strikes down Ohio marriage recognition law, Laura Ingraham joins ABC’s This Week
During his remarks at the White House Easter Breakfast, President Obama turned to openly gay Bishop Gene Robinson to ask for the closing prayer, surprising the bishop, who says that his remarks will live on only in memory, because it was entirely off the cuff. Considering an audience of different faiths, it’s hard to imagine the President’s move was apolitical.
Happy Tax Day! I hope you filed yours.
It’s also Palindrome Week on the calendar, if you write your dates like we do in the U.S.
The Guardian and the Washington Post were honored with Pulitzer Prizes for their publication of the Edward Snowden documents, enraging most of the far right by actually doing the job of the Fourth Estate.

A film crew follows Robinson as he struggles to bring to light that homosexuality does not interfere with the right to preach and worship and the Lgbt communities should be welcomed to practice the religion as anyone else. He is constantly yelled at and told he is a sinner, and even people who think they are soldiers for [ Read More ]

“Love Free or Die” is now available April 9, thanks to Wolfe Video. The documentary, focusing on the first openly gay person to be elected bishop, was filmed by the award-winning Macky Alston and illuminates more about how sexuality and religion are pitted against each other: “Love Free Or Die is a film about religion, homosexuality and human rights; how tradition and scripture are used by many to reject a faithful minority and amid the growing calls in the Us and beyond to adopt inclusion. The film follows Bishop Gene Robinson, the first openly gay person to be elected bishop in the high church traditions of Christendom. Bishop Robinson’s elevation [ Read More ]

Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert have long been two of the Lgbt community's favorite straight allies. Maybe it's because they're equal-opportunity piss-takers, calling out Democrats who don't support same-sex rights with the same incredulous smirk they use to call out Republicans and Fox News. (There was a time when President Obama was really tight-lipped about same-sex marriage, remember.) Maybe it's because they — Stewart, especially — have been parodying homophobes since before parodying homophobes was cool. Or maybe it's simply the fact that satire is the best way to mock the ridiculousness of anti-gay people and politicians.
2012 was a really revolutionary year for gay Americans, but there was still plenty of bizarre anti-gay sentiment for Stewart and Colbert to report on. So take half an hour and enjoy their ten gayest moments of 2012. You won't be sorry.
10) Stephen Colbert explains how homosexuals created Hurricane Isaac.

Former Teen Wolf star Colton Haynes has joined Arrow as Roy Harper, a character who has a complicated history in DC comics. Roy Harper was variously the civilian alter ego of Green Arrow's sidekick Speedy, Teen Titan's Arsenal, and Justice League's Red Arrow. Nobody is yet talking much about Haynes' character on Arrow, but what really matters is if he gets to train on the salmon ladder shirtless like Stephen Amell.
Speaking of Arrow, John Barrowman talked to TV Guide about his character. He won't reveal if he's actually playing the Dark Archer, but he does talk about how his character's importance grows throughout the season, so we should be looking forward to seeing a lot more of him going forward.

Time is running out for How I Met Your Mother. Series creators Craig Thomas and Carter Bays have asked that CBS decide by the end of 2012 if the comedy will end this season or next. CBS is in the process of negotiating for another season and it's probably not ready to lose a hit show after a disappointing fall. PBS documentary series "Independent Lens" officially kicks off its 2012-2013 season tonight, October 29th, with "Love Free or Die," a film from director Macky Alston about Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in a Christian church, a man who wore a bullet-proof vest to his consecration in 2003. It's a portrait of both an individual and an extremely timely issue, and this round of Independent Lens is filled with similarly relevant films in a moment in which public television itself is coming under political fire. Indiewire spoke with Independent Lens' founding and senior producer Lois Vossen about the docs, the series' move to Monday nights after a problematic shift to Thursdays last year and new host Stanley Tucci. Can you tell me about the new timeslot [Monday nights at 10pm] and what you expect from it? We feel PBS definitely demonstrated a commitment to independent film by giving us one of its key timeslots -- Monday.

Wales One World Film Festival, Across Wales
The world comes to Wales for this event, which isn't to suggest that the Welsh need to get out more; rather, it's full of remote destinations most are unlikely to see first-hand. Like Mongolia, as seen in landscape epic The Eagle Hunter's Son, and heard in music doc AnDa Union: From The Steppes To The City. Or perhaps 1920s Siberia (silent Soviet doc Turksib, with a live soundtrack). There are also classics, recent releases (Mysteries Of Lisbon, Surviving Life) and national premieres (Jafar Panahi's controversial This Is Not A Film, Austrian coming-of-ager Breathing).
Various venues, Sun to 11 Apr, wowfilmfestival.com

Cardinal O'Brien might be asking God to smite them all for thinking about getting married, but Britain's gay community will find the usual safe (but not too safe) haven at this annual celebration. That's more than can...

Love Free or Die Click here to read the review! "There’s nothing innately wrong with Alston’s documentary, other than that it seems to lack a cohesive focus. While the main thrust seems to be concerned with the subject of Gene Robinson, the documentary slips into a mild treatise on homosexuality and how divisive it is in the religious realm. While everyone should be able to practice the faith of their choosing and everyone should be respected and treated equally, it’s a bit hard to feel too emotionally distraught over the treatment of Gene Robinson and the struggle for acceptance in the religious realm."...

Parker Posey was all set to host last night's awards ceremony, but fell ill — and so, as live-bloggers Eric Hynes and Claiborne Smith report, Sundance festival director John Cooper reluctantly took the helm, choking up a bit right at the top as he drove himself through a remembrance of Bingham Ray. Rebounding, he brought on director and actress Katie Aselton as co-host and it was on to the awards. You can actually watch all this here (select "2012 Sundance Film Festival"). An overview of what the critics are saying about the winners:
Grand Jury Prize: Documentary. The House I Live In, "a lucid, long-view unpacking of the War on Drugs from Eugene Jarecki, who ably dissected the lead-up to the Iraq War in Why We Fight." The Boston Globe's Ty Burr: "The movie marshals a wide selection of talking heads, from Oklahoma prison guards and Reagan-era appointees to street dealers and Jarecki's own nanny,...

Macky Alston's "Love Free or Die," playing in the Us Documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival, begins as a portrait of Gene Robinson, the first openly gay bishop in the Anglican Church. Even if "Love Free or Die" had been content to just remain focused on "the most controversial Christian in the world," it would have had a solid story to tell. Despite facing death threats and opposition within his own church, Robinson is a sensitive, funny and altogether inspirational subject. The thing that elevates "Love Free or Die" -- which I will eventually type as "Love Free...

Park City – Despite the insurgent rallying cry implied by its title, Love Free or Die is a probing, even-handed account of the experience of Gene Robinson, the first openly gay, non-celibate bishop ordained in a major Christian denomination. Examining the ripple effect of his actions both in the U.S. Episcopal Church and the 78 million-strong worldwide Anglican network to which it belongs, Macky Alston’s engrossing documentary sheds light on a significant chapter in the broader struggle for Lgbt rights. With the backing of progressive clergy, Robinson’s committed stance led to a successful referendum at the

When Gene Robinson became a bishop of the Episcopal Church’s New Hampshire diocese in 2003, it was a watershed moment for organized religion, to be sure. Yet to merely deem the election of the first openly gay non-celibate priest in the history of major Christian denominations a “watershed” is to understate the rather extraordinary significance of a single act that overturned a millennia-old tradition of intolerance. Macky Alston’s documentary Love Free or Die is a film worthy of that momentous event. It follows the courageous Bishop Gene as he faces a wealth of hatred and distrust. He is excluded from the Anglican Church’s once-a-decade Lambeth Conference, and he faces death threats, cruel hecklers, and more while fighting for full-fledged equality in his church and a newfound understanding of the Bible’s most controversial elements. Robinson, a folksy native Southerner with charm to spare, is a relentless advocate for Lgbt rights, adept...

[Premiere Screening: Monday, January 23 6:00 pm –Temple Theatre, Park City]
Last night, I was at a holiday party and I saw my five year old daughter in a silver-sequined dress through the lens of someone else’s video camera. Christmas lights shone in the center of the frame and my daughter glistened to the right of the frame. For a second, as she danced in front of the camera, I saw her as I knew her most truly to be and had never seen her before. It is for such moments of revelation that I am addicted to documentary film.
Sometimes it fails. A searing experience too often loses its power when the footage is screened and edited. But when life at its most beautiful or most shattering is reflected and even heightened through the art of this medium, it feels like more than witnessing a miracle; it feels like performing one – which is totally hot.

"Love Free Or Die," directed by Macky Alston ("The Killer Within") is one of three Lgbt-themed films in the U.S. Documentary Competition. What's it about? "Love Free Or Die" is about openly gay bishop Gene Robinson whose courageous honesty and catalytic leadership have changed the world. Director Macky Alston says: "The biggest challenge in making this film was interviewing bishops and other religious leaders who were gay but couldn't be open about it. As a gay man, it was excruciating to connect with these people (and there are a lot of them) and watch them shut down, withdraw, say that maybe someday they would be able to come out, but no time soon. Meeting so many people who were unable to come out of the closet over the past four years gives me all the more respect for those who have and do. There are some in this film...

His anger drove his ratings, but also drove his bosses crazy. Howard Kurtz on how the newly unemployed MSNBC star's indignation fueled his rise and fall.
When Keith Olbermann launched his MSNBC program eight years ago, he attempted to assemble a witty, fast-paced, post-ironic look at the day's news. Then he got angry.
Related story on The Daily Beast: Rush Limbaugh's TV Nemesis
As his indignation swelled-fueled by George W. Bush, the Republicans, the Iraq war and Fox News-his ratings ballooned as well. But at times the anger would metastasize into self-righteous fury, producing bitter confrontations with his network bosses-who treasured Olbermann's success but were increasingly worn out by the histrionics.
Olbermann's abrupt departure Friday demonstrated, in a very real sense, the limits of anger as a tool of television. The same fervor that draws cheers from partisan viewers almost invariably leads to clashes with the people who sign the checks,...

Weekend Meme: Bishop Robinson Retiring, Justin Timberlake Gets Naked, and Darren Criss talks "Glee."
The New York Times has a great piece on the efforts some communities are making to add anti-bullying and sex education curriculum into their schools and the resistance they’re encountering. In Montana, phrases as innocuous as “human beings can love people of the same gender” have inspired protests by parents saying, “Anyone who reads this document can see that it promotes acceptance of the homosexual lifestyle.” Frankly, I wish the homosexual lifestyle were more glamorous as I sit here on a Saturday evening watching cartoons and eating leftover Halloween candy.

I attended the 20th Annual GLAAD Media Awards at the Nokia Center in Los Angeles on on April 18. When I told a number of lesbian friends that I would be going to this, rather than lurking typically around West Hollywood on a Saturday night, they told me this was pointless because GLAAD is mostly for guys. Some of my best friends know guys, so I decided to give it a whirl.
And guess what? It was a giant sea of gay. Shocking. Actually, I have never seen so many gay people in one room.

"The Ellen DeGeneres Show" was named the Best Talk Show for the episode "Ellen and Portia's Wedding Day", and accepting the award was the mentioned couple.
