The coronavirus has hit the industry like a wrecking ball.
Starting late last week, news emerged — sometimes in bursts — of productions shutting down across the globe.
In every case it wasn’t a decision that was made lightly, after all the lives and livelihoods of the cast and crew will be temporarily derailed by the decision. But what choice do studios and producers have? The alternative is to plough on and risk the safety of everyone on their sets, which can resemble “a breeding ground” for viruses given the number of people working often in relatively close confinement.
Shutting down a production in the blink of an eye is no mean feat, especially when it’s the financial and logistical size of, say, “Stranger Things.” Yet when executive producer and director Shawn Levy gathered over one hundred members of his cast and crew into a huddle on Friday morning, the decision had already been taken.

If you’re looking to make a killing in television, unscripted might not be your thing. Margins are tight, huge hits can be infrequent and accolades are often rare.
But now, for the first time in several years, a new wave of optimism is sweeping over the reality TV business. More buyers are in the marketplace as streaming services start bulking up on alternative fare. “In terms of the demand for unscripted and nonfiction reality, you can feel it,” says Tinopolis U.S. chairman and A. Smith & Co. Prods. CEO Arthur Smith. “More money is being spent on unscripted programming this year than any other year in history.”
Recent hits have injected fresh energy into the business, with shows like “The Masked Singer” and “Live Pd” not only being massive draws but also inspiring more risk-taking. Even A-list stars are diving into reality, giving the entire genre more of a shine.

If there’s a company that knows how to keep unscripted TV hits on the air for the long haul, it’s Bunim/Murray Productions.
Maybe that comes with instilling franchises like “The Real World” and “The Challenge” with the staying power to last for more than three decades. But even Bunim/Murray CEO Gil Goldschein will admit that when it comes to what may be his biggest hit of all, E!’s “Keeping Up With the Kardashians,” he is somewhat mystified as to how America’s most famous family has managed to keep their crazy train on the tracks for 18 seasons and counting, but he thinks it boils down to a simple secret.
