“Technology is an incredibly powerful tool. I hope we can use it all to our advantage and not clumsily smack ourselves in the face with it,” declares “Black Mirror” creator Charlie Brooker. In our recent webchat, producer Jessica Rhoades adds, “When technology connects us, it’s at its best. When it divides us it’s at its worst.” Watch our exclusive video interview above.
“Black Mirror” is the anthology series where each episode tells a dystopian tale featuring technology. Brooker has written the series since it launched in 2011. He has won five Emmys for his work on the show. He explains, “It’s interesting because each one is separate. You say goodbye to all the characters at the end of each episode. There’s something a bit sad about that. You’ve bothered to create this whole world and it’s like, ‘goodbye.’”

Right as generative AI was becoming the hot-button issue of last summer’s WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, Charlie Brooker, creator of beloved Netflix television anthology series “Black Mirror,” was ready to skewer the topic with his season 6 premiere, “Joan Is Awful.” Following a woman named Joan (Annie Murphy) as her life slowly unravels due to its constant depiction on an app called Streamberry, the episode delves into the slippery slope we’ve all signed up for by signing our data away to companies and computers with potentially dubious intentions. Released a month into the 2023 strikes, “Joan Is Awful” became a touchstone for artists raising alarms on the entertainment industry’s new investment into AI programs like ChatGPT and Midjourney.
“It was really odd,” Brooker said in a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter. “So, I must have written it in June-July in 2022. When we shot it, it was September-October.

Charlie Brooker anticipates a lot of things. As the creator and writer of Black Mirror, his Emmy-winning sci-fi Netflix series has predicted everything from new Apple technology to the election of a certain U.S. president.
With the season six episode “Joan Is Awful,” Brooker knew the AI-centered story would be timely. But even his dystopian crystal ball couldn’t have foreseen that the Ally Pankiw-directed installment starring Annie Murphy and Salma Hayek would become a flashpoint in Hollywood’s AI battle.
“A couple of times on the show, there’s been something I’ve written and then something similar happens in the real world similar-ish,” says Brooker. “Narcissistically, you start to feel like, ‘This is too big a coincidence. I feel like I’m living in a simulation.’”

Netflix’s “Black Mirror” returns to the Emmy Awards after a four-year break with its sixth season that premiered back in June 2023. The trajectory of the Charlie Brooker anthology series at the Emmys has been a tumultuous journey, particularly in recent years. The science-fiction dystopia used to dominate the limited/movie genre, winning Best Television Movie for three consecutive years at its height, before the Television Academy ruled that it must compete for the drama categories for its fifth season in 2020, ending its streak. Then the following year, the top category for limited series was changed to Best Limited or Anthology Series, placing “Black Mirror” back into the genre, but in the more competitive limited series race rather than the standalone television movies.

If you thought season one of Hulu’s limited series Nine Perfect Strangers gave a new definition of locked up, there’s going to be plenty of cabin fever come season 2.
We caught up with the series star and EP Nicole Kidman last night on the red carpet for her AFI Life Achievement Award to ask how the next season is coming along.
“Swiss Alps And Crazy! Hold on tight!” exclaimed Kidman. She was talking about the series’ setting which switches up from the Tranquillum House retreat in the fictional town of Cabrillo, CA to the Swiss Alps. Kidman plays the wellness resort’s founder Masha Dmitrichenko who has it out for her guests by dispensing to them a psychoactive drug, namely Psilocybin. Masha is arrested, cradling her hallucinated late daughter in her arms. However, she appears to have beaten the rap as the Tranquillum House guests covered for her illegal actions during police interviews.

For the longest time, Caitlin Cronenberg wanted no part of the director’s chair. As a highly successful photographer who’s shot everyone and everything — including the much-publicized cover art for Drake’s fourth studio album, Views — she had no interest in following in the footsteps of her father, David Cronenberg, and older brother, Brandon Cronenberg. But everything started to change when Schitt’s Creek star Annie Murphy gave Caitlin a call about a low-pressure directing job that would ultimately whet her appetite en route to her feature directorial debut, Humane.
“It was very much thrust upon me by my friend Annie Murphy from Schitt’s Creek. She was doing a web series [The Plateaus] and needed a fake music video … and over the course of that process, I realized that directing felt very natural to me,” Cronenberg tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And when I did a short film called The Endings...

To date, only three programs throughout television history have swept the top seven Primetime Emmys categories for series, lead actor, lead actress, supporting actor, supporting actress, writing and directing. The lucky three are: miniseries “Angels in America” (2004), comedy series “Schitt’s Creek” (2020) and drama series “The Crown” (2021). At the upcoming 2024 Emmys, “The Bear” is hoping to join this esteemed list — and it’s all thanks to a savvy category switcheroo from one of its fan-fave stars.
Recently the FX dramedy about a Chicago beef restaurant claimed six of the top seven Primetime Emmys for its first season: comedy series, lead actor Jeremy Allen White as Carmen “Carmy” Berzatto, supporting actor Ebon Moss-Bachrach as restaurant manager Richard “Richie” Jerimovich, supporting actress Ayo Edebiri as sous-chef Sydney Adamu, and both writing and directing for Christopher Storer. “The Bear” was not eligible in the lead actress category, so it couldn’t win there and complete the sweep.

In the last episode of Peacock’s Mrs. Davis, Simone (Betty Gilpin) finally gets to the truth behind the seemingly omnipotent algorithm of the title. But whatever dramatic origin story Simone might have expected, she doesn’t get it. Instead, she discovers that what Mrs. Davis has really been all this time … is a Buffalo Wild Wings app wildly overdelivering on its customer service directive.
The reveal is so hilariously, gob-smackingly stupid that even Simone, who’s spent the series trying to destroy Mrs. Davis, looks a little crushed. But it also feels perfectly apt for the year of ChatGPT and OpenAI. As the AI-driven future once only imagined in sci-fi inched toward mainstream reality, shows like Mrs. Davis, Black Mirror and A Murder at the End of the World leaned in for a closer look — and discovered not some sleek and shiny panacea, but our own human foibles reflected back at us.

Anna Drezen, the creator of Freeform’s animated series Praise Petey, has announced on social media that the cable network has canceled the show after one season.
“Sad to say Praise Petey will not be renewed at Freeform,” Drezen shared in an Instagram post. “I cannot believe we got to make this show. Best crew, best cast, top to bottom the dream of my life to make something this funny and unwell that went on actual television.”
The series premiered on Freeform on July 21 of this year and consisted of 10 episodes. Drezen acknowledged the difficulties in attracting viewers to a new show in the summer and during the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes.
“I have heard that making a non-ip show during covid that premieres during a double strike in the dead of summer was not ideal for viewership,” the former Saturday Night Live writer added.
