In the lead-up to the 86th annual Academy Awards on March 2, HitFix will be bringing you the lowdown on all 24 Oscar categories with multiple entries each day. Take a few notes and bone up on the competition as we give you the edge in your office Oscar pool! The Best Original Song category enjoyed a hell of a lot more attention this season than it likely ever has as "Alone Yet Not Alone"-gate was a blight and an embarrassment. Not entirely for the composer of the song, mind you, who waged a one-man email campaign to get fellow branch members to vote for the track, but also for the Academy, which decided that disqualified the song, making it the only instance of a nomination being revoked due to perceived campaign malpractice in the Oscars' 85-year history. Given what happens under the hood every single season, if the Academy wants to go down that road,...

U2 announced that they would be performing their Oscar-nominated song, “Ordinary Love” from Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom at the Academy Award ceremony on March 2.
U2 members Bono (Paul David Hewson), The Edge (Dave Evans), Adam Clayton and Larry Mullen will join fellow nominees Pharrell Williams, who will be performing “Happy” from Despicable Me 2, and Idina Menzel, performing “Let it Go” from Frozen, on the Oscar stage. Presumably, Karen O will also be performing her Oscar-nominated song, “The Moon Song” from Her, though her appearance has yet to be confirmed.
“Ordinary Love” won the Golden Globe for Best Original Song, and U2 recently opened up about their involvement with Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, saying they were approached by studio head Harvey Weinstein and simply could not refuse.
“This was the one project you just couldn’t say no to. For our generation, South Africa was a real illustration...

The Best Song skirmish continues.
Last week, AMPAS announced that their Board of Governors had voted to rescind the Original Song nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone,” music by Bruce Broughton and lyric by Dennis Spiegel. The decision was prompted by the discovery that Broughton, a former Governor and current Music Branch executive committee member, had emailed members of the branch to make them aware of his submission during the nominations voting period.
Academy president Cheryl Boone Isaacs stated in the press release that, “No matter how well-intentioned the communication, using one’s position as a former governor and current executive committee member to personally promote one’s own Oscar submission creates the appearance of an unfair advantage.”
On Saturday, The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences issued another statement regarding the decision due to all the flack they’ve received and this time,...

Three days after yanking the Original Song nomination from the religious period-drama Alone Yet Not Alone, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has issue a more detailed explanation about why the theme song was disqualified.
At issue was composer Bruce Broughton, a former governor of the group’s music branch, who acknowledged that he privately emailed members of that voting division and asked them to consider his song from the relatively obscure movie.
Meanwhile, Broughton is questioning whether what he did was any different than the past award-season consulting done by the current Academy president, who comes from...

When the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced the nominees for their annual awards on January 16th, 2014, suspicion rumbled around the Best Original Song category, which featured a nomination for a little heard song from a little seen film titled Alone Yet Not Alone.
Composed by Emmy winning Oscar nominee Bruce Broughton, with lyrics by Dennis Spiegel, the song is performed by quadriplegic evangelical Christian author and radio host, Joni Earekson Tada. Concerns about the inclusion of the song, however, stemmed from the fact that the composer is a former Governor of the Academy’s music branch, and a current executive committee member.
Following the nominations announcement, Broughton addressed concerns as he spoke to Entertainment Weekly:
“What happens is that the Music Branch of the Academy puts all the songs on a disc and I was concerned that this song would be really easy to overlook. So, yeah,...

‘Alone Yet Not Alone’ Best Song Oscar 2014 nomination revoked: Nod for obscure song from equally obscure Christian movie had left many scratching their heads (photo: Kelly Greyson in ‘Alone Yet Not Alone’) Last night, January 28, 2014, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Board of Governors voted to revoke the Best Original Song Oscar nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone,” from the movie of the same name, and with music by Bruce Broughton and lyrics by Dennis Spiegel. According to the Academy’s press release, the decision to disqualify “Alone Yet Not Alone” "was prompted by the discovery that Broughton, a former Governor and current Music Branch executive committee member, had emailed members of the branch to make them aware of his submission during the nominations voting period." Following the announcement of the 2014 Academy Award nominations, several publications raised concerns about the legitimacy of the nomination for “Alone Yet Not Alone...

It was a contender, yet not a contender.
In a shocking and extremely rare move, an Academy Award nominee for original song has had its nomination pulled amid accusations of electoral impropriety.
Alone Yet Not Alone, the theme song from a little-seen film with the same title, was the headscratcher of nominations morning two weeks ago. Few had heard of it before it secured a coveted place among the top five movie songs of the year.
Now it’s out of the race completely as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences rules that its composer, a former governor...

The Academy has announced the Board of Governors has voted to rescind the Original Song nomination for "Alone Yet Not Alone," by Bruce Broughton. A press release says the decision was prompted by the discovery Broughton, a former Governor and current Music Branch executive committee member, had emailed members of the branch to make them aware of his submission during the nominations voting period. This is an important distinction as the song's eligibility was also called into question as noted by the Hollywood Reporter as it did have an Oscar-qualifying run took place at Laemmle Town Center 5 in Encino, where it screened once daily at 9:55 p.m. from Nov. 15 through Nov. 22, but in order to be eligible the distributors must also purchase advertising prior to the film's one week run... There was no such advertising. The Academy, however, chose to focus on Broughton's lobbying of his former Branch members,...

Our eagle eyed writer Stephen Leigh spotted yesterday a jetski in the trailer for Grand Theft Auto V had the name ‘Speedophile’ written on it, a term which has now started to trend online and on twitter and which may cause a considerable headache to Rockstar Games somewhere down the road.
The reason?
Well it’s been reported that The Federal Court of Australia has ordered one central coast blogger, Dave Evans, to shut down a number of his websites (which were deemed pornographic or ‘salacious’) because they featured Speedo branded swimming costumes and domain names. Evans had taken out several domains with the word ‘Speedo’ included and many of them featured men in Speedo briefs alongside pornographic images that caught Speedo’s attention as they deemed them offensive. His sites contained paid subscription services.
Speedo claimed Evans was infringing trademark agreement that threatened their company’s “valuable reputation and...

"Tranquil Disturbances" is the latest release from Khp Publishers. Much like the Grindhouse double features of yesteryear this book is made up from two tales, one novel and one novella both penned by award winning horror writer Garry Charles. The two stories are vastly different but they hold one similarity... they are written as a homage to the fiction from the late '70s and early '80s and guarantee the reader a roller coaster ride of adrenaline fueled mayhem and fear. In a further nod to the era Charles, with the help of Khp, arranged to have Dave Evans (original lead singer with AC/DC) to feature on the cover and his lyrics to appear throughout the Death Tide segment of the double feature. Charles has already made mention of a possible Death Tide screenplay going...
