In the new FX drama The Veil, a colleague of British spy Imogen Salter pleads with her to change strategy on a new undercover assignment. “Please don’t speak to the real me,” she replies. “It is extremely unhelpful.”
The Veil repeatedly tries to figure out where the line exists between this persona and the real her, whose name isn’t even Imogen. The problem is that the version of the series about “Imogen” is vastly more entertaining, but the show mostly seems interested in her true identity.

We meet Elisabeth Moss’ Portia in the first scene of FX’s new Hulu drama The Veil, striding confidently through a busy international airport, stiletto heels precariously high, her mouth a gash of crimson lipstick. She’s meeting a shady businessman named Tomas, and they toast to a transaction successfully made. But several seconds later, Interpol rushes in and she chides Tomas for all the criminal details he spilled in the previous 37 days. She walks away, leaving him fuming and in custody.
Her name isn’t actually Portia. As she leaves, aspect and tone instantly changed, she’s already arranging her next destination — Istanbul — and her next identity, telling a person on the telephone, “I would like my name to be Imogen.” She will be Imogen for the rest of The Veil.
It’s here, two minutes into the show, that eagle-eyed viewers and English majors should already be putting together certain pieces.

Kim Kardashian is leaving fans intrigued with her mixed messaging on TikTok. Kim posted two videos on Thursday afternoon, the first set to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off” and the second to Sza’s “Kill Bill.” Both songs are notable picks for the 42-year-old reality star, who recently finalized her divorce from 45-year-old Kanye West.
Kim and Kanye’s eldest daughter, 9-year-old North, joins her mom in both TikToks, dancing alongside her with a pink filter over their eyes.
The Swift pick left fans wondering if Kim was, perchance, referring to Kanye and Taylor’s long-standing feud, which began over a decade ago when Kanye stormed the VMAs stage while Taylor was accepting her award for Best Female Video. Kanye grabbed the mic to tell the audience that Beyoncé should have won, and though he apologized after the event, he later went on to say he didn’t regret the evening.

Here comes the “slob kabob” all dressed in leather fits! On this week’s episode of “The Kardashians”, Kourtney Kardashian opens up about her drunken first “wedding” to Travis Barker in Las Vegas.
Though that wedding wasn’t legal, it was certainly memorable, just not to Kourt.
“I blacked out,” Kourtney admits to her pal, Simon Huck, days later.
In an aside interview, discussing “Tequila Kourtney,” the Poosh founder reveals, “I didn’t even remember Elvis, like, sang to me walking down the aisle. I didn’t remember I had a bouquet.”
The couple notes that their first faux-wedding was an intimate affair with only their security, Travis’ manager, and his drum tech in attendance.

Elsie Fisher and ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism’ Cast Embrace the ’80s at Carnival-Themed Premiere Party
Though many of them weren’t even alive in the 1980s, the cast of “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” said it was a dream come true to recreate the era for their new film.
Now streaming on Amazon Prime Video, the horror-comedy held its world premiere Thursday night at the Aero Theatre in Santa Monica as part of the 2022 Beyond Fest Film Festival. The afterparty was held at Pacific Park on the Santa Monica Pier, where guests could play carnival games and feast on funnel cakes and nachos.
Based on Grady Hendrix’s novel with a screenplay by Jenna Lamia, “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” is directed by Damon Thomas and centers on best friends Abby (Elsie Fisher) and Gretchen (Amiah Miller), who are struggling with high school when another challenge is thrown their way — Gretchen begins exhibiting signs of demonic possession. The year is 1988 and the United States is in the throes of the Satanic Panic. High school sophomores Abby and Gretchen have been best friends since fourth grade.
Author Gary Hendrix described his 2016 book My Best Friend’s Exorcism as “Beaches meets The Exorcist.” The movie adaptation from Amazon Prime, like the book, is a snarl of teen dramedy, horror, and plenty of winking ‘80s caricature, but it lacks some of the sharp character and nostalgic charm of the original novel. The film really tries its best, but ultimately collapses from exhaustion as it is unsure of its stature between satire and scares. It gets the closest when poking fun at the conservative Christian values that fueled the Satanic Panic movement, but overall the movie is a light teen satire with a horror wrapper.

In an industry that frequently sees 20 and 30-year-olds playing high schoolers, Elsie Fisher is the rare performer who acts her own age. To that effect, she’s made a name for herself with her tenderly studied portrayals of unlikely teen protagonists: the soft-spoken Kayla Day in Bo Burnham’s “Eighth Grade”; the daughter of Annie Wilkes in Stephen King’s “Castle Rock”; and Lila, the “final girl” in 2022’s “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.”
With “My Best Friend’s Exorcism,” Fisher brings humanity to horror once again as Abby, a sophomore hell-bent on rescuing her best friend Gretchen (Amiah Miller) from demonic possession. Based on the book by Grady Hendrix, the film is a fresh take on the exorcism and teen horror flicks of the ‘70s and ‘80s, weaving in subjects like sexual assault, religious repression and queerness from a contemporary perspective.

Based on the bestseller by Grady Hendrix, My Best Friend’s Exorcism is the 1980s set tales of Gretchen and Abby. They’re typical teen movie friends, they come from different religious, social, and economic backgrounds but attend the same private school thanks to Abby’s scholarship.
But that friendship is threatened by Gretchen’s parents’ plans to move at the end of the school year. But in the meantime, there are better things to do than worry, like spending the weekend at a lakefront cabin owned by their friend Margaret’s parents. Their friend Glee is invited along, Margaret’s boyfriend Wally isn’t but shows up anyway.

Author Grady Hendrix described his second novel, My Best Friend’s Exorcism, as “Beaches meets The Exorcist.” It emphasized sentimentality and humor over scares, though it wasn’t afraid to inject a few frights. The adaptation tries to faithfully capture the events of the book within its constraints and format, but this rushed retelling struggles to worm its way into your heart.
It’s 1988. High school sophomores Abby (Elsie Fisher) and Gretchen (Amiah Miller) have been inseparable best friends since the fourth grade. Their tight bond gets tested after a disastrous slumber party leaves Gretchen behaving differently. She’s moodier, more aloof, and occasionally downright mean. Is it hormonal, social pressures, or something more? Abby begins to suspect that Gretchen’s been possessed.
Director Damon Thomas, working from Jenna Lamia’s screenplay, keeps an irreverent, breezy tone. Kitschy décor, terrible wigs, and popular decade-specific needle drops broadcast the ‘80s setting. Abby...

Stronger in concept than execution, “My Best Friend’s Exorcism” is, as fans of Grady Hendrix’s YA source novel already know, studded with entertaining ideas. But while there’s certainly enough talent involved, the film adaptation can’t seem to coalesce around the cleverness and insight that made Hendrix’s book a bestseller.
Though this is the first feature from director Damon Thomas, he’s had plenty of experience in sharp, female-focused screen horror, as a director and executive producer of “Killing Eve” and “Penny Dreadful.” The same goes for writer Jenna Lamia, making her movie debut after working on shows like “Awkward” and “Good Girls.”
There’s also the unfulfilled promise of lead Elsie Fisher (“Eighth Grade”), who is — through no fault of her own — miscast and misdirected as Abby, a self-conscious high school sophomore in 1988. Abby, who is alienated enough already, is broken-hearted about the fact that her...

The recent outpouring of love for Netflix’s Do Revenge has demonstrated that there’s an appetite for a modern and more malevolent take on the classic teen movies we revere. My Best Friend’s Exorcism is the latest example of this pleasing new twist on the genre and, although far from perfect, it’s an endearing and entertaining ride.
Abby (Elsie Fisher) and Gretchen (Amiah Miller) have been as close as sisters since fourth grade and have every reason to believe they’ll be best friends forever. So far they’ve supported one another through acne, body dysmorphia, religious zeal, inappropriate crushes and high school…there’s no reason to think that a little thing like demonic possession will come between them.
Margaret (Rachel Ogechi Kanu) and Glee (Cathy Ang) round out their friendship group and together the girls form a supportive and tight unit; essential for surviving life at their uptight,...

The “Bff Quiz” was a staple of the Eighties teen girl magazine. Back then, the media treated young women with open contempt. Female friendship was deemed too fickle and too poisonous to be determined by feelings – no, the only way to know if your bestie was really your bestie was to have them answer 12 hypothetical questions. Would they tell you if your new Esprit skirt was actually hideous? Would they get jealous if you started dating one of the popular boys? Would they douse your body in holy water if a supernatural entity took possession of your soul?
In My Best Friend’s Exorcism, banishing demons is the ultimate test of teen girl loyalty. It’s a devilishly smart and self-aware take on the current trend for Eighties horror homage, lovingly adapted from Grady Hendrix...

Plenty of horror movies claim to be “messed up.” “Barbarian” actually is messed up. Tess (Georgina Campbell) is a young woman who travels to Detroit for a job interview. Prime Video has debuted the trailer for ‘My Best Friend’s Exorcism,’ based on the novel from New York Times best-selling author Grady Hendrix.
Surviving the teenage years isn’t easy, especially when you’re possessed by a demon. It’s 1988, and best friends Abby (Elsie Fisher) and Gretchen (Amiah Miller) are navigating boys, pop culture, and a paranormal force clinging to Gretchen like a pair of neon legwarmers. With assistance from overly confident mall exorcist Christian Lemon (Christopher Lowell), Abby is determined to compel the demon back to the pits of hell—if it doesn’t kill Gretchen first. At turns horrifying and hilarious.
The movie pays homage to 1980s pop culture with a totally timeless tale of terror and true friendship.
Directed by Damon Thomas and written by Jenna Lamia, the film stars Elsie Fisher, Amiah Miller, Cathy Ang, Rachel Ogechi Kanu (Cheer for Your Life), and Christopher Lowell.

Kim Kardashian has been caught wed-handed! The reality star and mogul confessed that, despite some doomed relationships in her past, she has hope for the future, in this clip from the May 5 episode of Hulu's The Kardashians. "I believe in love," she says. "That's why hopefully there will be just one more wedding for me. Fourth time's the charm!" While she didn't name him specifically, it's safe to assume that, at least for the moment, Kim is referring to her relationship with boyfriend Pete Davidson. Kim was previously married to Damon Thomas from 2000 to 2004 and Kris Humphries from 2011 to 2013. Her marriage to Kanye West, who she wed in 2014, ended earlier...

“Killing Eve” fans have never seen Villanelle like this. The BBC America drama returned on Sunday night for Season 4 with what appears to be a major role reversal for its two lead characters: While Eve (Sandra Oh) is taking on a harder edge with a gun in hand, Villanelle (Jodie Comer) seems eager to take a more righteous path.
That has led Villanelle to a religious community, where she’s eager to prove that she’s not a monster. But in her haste to get baptized and prove her worth, Villanelle still gets in her own way. Enter what the show is calling her “Villanelle Vision”: Villanelle starts imagining a version of herself, dressed as Jesus Christ, who has some hard truths for the assassin.
Comer told Variety that playing the vision was “Terrifying. Fun. Hairy. I’ll leave you with that one,” she quipped. “I hope [viewers] enjoy it.

BBC America’s “Killing Eve” is coming to an end, and on Tuesday the network revealed the trailer for its fourth and final season.
Villanelle (Jodie Comer) and Eve (Sandra Oh) find themselves seeking to change their lives — Villanelle through therapy — in the new trailer. Is Villanelle developing a conscience while Eve goes in the opposite direction? The trailer sure seems to hint at that.
The final season will see Eve and Villanelle starting out in very different places. Eve is working on a revenge mission, while Villanelle is trying to prove she’s not a monster.
Meanwhile Carolyn (Fiona Shaw) is chasing down The Twelve and the person who ordered the hit on Kenny.
Each of the women are driven by “passion, revenge and obsession, building towards. messy, nuanced and totally glorious season finale,” according to AMC.
Season 4 is written by Laura Neal. Neal is also an executive producer on the series.
