"Star Trek Beyond" might be the best "Mass Effect" movie we ever get. The shiny Yorktown station, with city sprawls built along the surface of spinning, gravity-manipulating rings, is a dead ringer for the Citadel. The film's villain — Krall (Idris Elba) — leads an army of robots, "The Swarm," much like Saren Arterius employing the cyclopean robot Geth in the first "Mass Effect."
Krall's army destroys the Enterprise in the first act of "Beyond," leaving the crew stranded on planet Altamid. Though Krall made his home on this world, he isn't a native. No, he's really Balthazar Edison, once the (human) captain of the Starfleet ship the U.S.S. Franklin. After the Franklin crashed on Altamid in the 22nd century, rescue from the Federation never came and Edison became disillusioned.
He and his surviving crew found abandoned technology, including his Swarm army and the life-draining devices they've sustained himself with.

The time has finally come for Marvel Studios‘ newest outing, which has been collecting hype — good and bad. Echo has a lot on its plate. It will be the first title, which is the launch of the company’s Marvel Spotlight banner. This will be their platform for “more grounded, character-driven stories” that don’t require a knowledge of “larger MCU continuity.” Plus, it has been touted as a more gritty, violent project that would rival previous shows like Daredevil and The Punisher. It will even re-introduce Daredevil and Kingpin in an effort to connect to the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again. The review embargo has lifted, and reactions are now hitting social media.

As of 12:01 a.m. Pt on Wednesday, September 27, the writers strike is over.
Though the ratification of the Guild’s fresh bargaining agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) won’t be official until all members vote affirmatively on it in the weeks to come, that is basically just a formality. The WGA’s negotiation team has secured a three-year Minimum Basic Agreement (Mba) with studios that they are rightfully very proud of.
The full details of the WGA’s agreement can be found on the organization’s website. Ultimately, the WGA received $233 million per year in additional commitments from the AMPTP, which is less than the $429 million it sought but more than the $86 million studios initially offered. In addition to that $233 million, the WGA successfully negotiated new rules for the industry that will make writing a far more secure profession. These include: strict guidelines for the use of A.

With all the hubbub surrounding Marvel‘s output and “superhero fatigue” in general, the studio seems to have taken a step back to evaluate the noise. As such, the rush to churn out more MCU projects has seen a slowing pace, with behind the scenes rumors and chatter indicating that some planned shows and movies will take on a different form, or perhaps be put on the backburner for a while.
Not many of us know the truth about these internal conversations, despite the things that certain leakers will tell you with bluster and confidence. But we do know that at one point Marvel was planning to release quite a few projects to Disney+ this year, and now there are only three official shows on the calendar, with one of them, Echo, arguably being dumped on the streamer in a more bingeable format this November.
But before Echo and Loki...

What You Need To Know About All-Star Superman, One Of The Key Comics Behind James Gunn's DC Universe
Ever since Warner Bros Discovery hired James Gunn and Peter Safran to restart their slate of DC films, fans have been debating what the new status quo might look like. Will these new movies be in the vein of "The Suicide Squad" or "Peacemaker," witty and sentimental action blockbusters with an affinity for the grotesque? Or will Gunn rein in his style and produce films more in line with the company's recent output? Gunn gave audiences a clue in a January press conference, where he revealed the first big film of his reign would be "Superman: Legacy." Rather than another origin story, it was teased as "Superman balancing his Kryptonian heritage with his human upbringing."
My first instinct reading that synopsis is to draw a connection to "Superman Smashes the Klan," Gene Luen Yang's fantastic 2019 limited series that borrows from the radio play "Clan of the Fiery Cross." The...

You may have heard that Warner Bros has, the company says, cancelled forever the release of Batgirl, starring Leslie Grace of In the Heights in the title role.
Darren Mooney at The Escapist has the best rundown I’ve come across yet of what happened, the conflicting explanations, and the likely fallout:
The film was reportedly so near completion that it had been shown to test audiences — even if the accounts of how those test audiences reacted vary dramatically depending on who is framing the story. Warner Bros. had already invested between 70M and 90M in the film that had been intended to stream on HBO Max. If anybody needed more proof that the streaming revolution promised by the pandemic was a failure, this would seem to be it.
Competing justifications for the cancellation have been offered, with commenters inevitably seizing on whichever argument validates the opinion they already hold.
