What to Expect When You’re Expecting to Expect It: Michele’s Debut Arrives Stillborn
Times are tough for the rom-com and Hollywood isn’t the only old geezer that’s forgotten how to treat a lady. Mainstream schlock in the Gallic realm is nothing new, but a host of recent B, C, and D grade features keep churning our way, all potential prototypes for possible Kate Hudson carbon copies. Currently at the top of the heap is actor turned director Clement Michel’s debut, The Stroller Strategy, a blindly constructed sham that gender reverses something like Bachelor Mother (1939) and perambulates nowhere in particular. Combining the usual base hetero rom-com ingredients together, Michel never gets beyond simple sugar.
Within five minutes of running time, Thomas Platz (Raphael Personnaz) has met Marie Deville (Charlotte Le Bon) at her birthday party in silent slo-mo. Without taking a breath, we see them move in together,...

IFC released High Lane on VOD late last year and now has announced the street date for the French thriller. The flick will drop on DVD on February 8th but no specs have been announced yet. The foreign slasher is directed by Abel Ferry from a script by Johanne Bernard and Louis-Paul Desanges and stars Fanny Valette, Johan Libéreau, Raphaël Lenglet, Nicolas Giraud, Maud Wyler, and Justin Blanckaert. Synopsis:
Towering heights and beautiful vistas turn into a haunting mindtrip in Abel Ferry’s gripping French scarefest that will definitely make you think twice about your next mountain climbing trip. In the film, a group of friends on vacation in Eastern Europe embark on an ambitious mountain expedition along a trail that they discover – way too late – is closed for repair. The thrill of this foolish challenge quickly turns sour as it becomes clear that not only is the path a...

Director: David Morlet.
Writers: Louis-Paul Desanges and David Morlet.
Mutants is a French film from David Morlet ("Bitten"), which was distributed on DVD October, 26th in North America. The non-communicative IFC Films and Mpi Home Video both helped facilitate the release, with the film being called an homage to: "Danny Boyle's modern classic 28 Days Later" (Scott Weinberg, Fearnet). The chilling atmosphere between these two films is shared, but Morlet's approach is focused more on the relationships in a zombie apocalypse and biblical references, rather than family loss, or military corruption.
The film incorporates a couple of dead end subplots. However, Mutants is centrally of a romantic union between the infected Marco (Francis Renaud) and Sonia (Helene de Fougerolles). Sonia's efforts to save Marco from complete infection involve persuasion, communication with a local military base (Noah), and a hit and run battle with a group of malingering bandits. The film...

Below is the trailer for the French horror film Mutants, which is timed rather poorly considering the imminent release of the remake of Romero's The Crazies. I say timed poorly because they appear incredibly similar in plot -- according to Bloody Disgusting, Mutants is about:
... a world devastated by a pandemic virus that turns human beings into primitive and bloodthirsty creatures, Marco and Sonia set off to find a secret base to escape from the "mutants". When the latter attack them, Marco is contaminated too. Little by little, he undergoes the same changes. Sonia, who is expecting a baby, is then forced to fight her worst enemy, the man she loves.
So, yeah, a little bit of 28 Days Later, a little bit of the Living Dead series, a little bit of The Crazies. Not exactly original. That said, if you're going to rehash a tried-and-true plot device, you should do it well.

The Bottom Line: A worthy addition to the zombie canon that, despite a predictable third act, gives zombie fans something new and chilling to contemplate.
Repeat after me: in the classic zombie survival narrative, the enemies are not the zombies/mutants/infected miscreants, but ourselves. How many times have we seen a group of survivors fending off wave after wave of happy-go-lucky flesh-eaters before turning against each other in a fit of paranoia, claustrophobia, or plain stupidity? Quite enough, and that’s part of the allure of the zombie genre, methinks. Romero started it, and most zombie flicks seem to have continued that trend in one shape or another.
Mutants, a French virus/zombie film by David Morley, certainly does, but it’s added its own distinct element. In this incarnation of the tried-and-true formula,...
