If there’s one positive thing even the many people he’s had feuds with might say about Vin Diesel, it’s that when he latches onto a character or concept, he doesn’t let them go. He may have skipped the first sequel to The Fast and the Furious, but once he did return to the role of Dominic Toretto, he made sure the sequels kept reaching theatres at a fast and furious pace. Few movie-goers seem to care about the Richard B. Riddick character beyond Pitch Black, but that hasn’t stopped Diesel from continuing to push sequels forward – and apparently Riddick 4 isn’t far off from production. Then there’s his 2015 fantasy/action film The Last Witch Hunter, which didn’t gain a lot of fans (although JoBlo’s own Alex Maidy dug it). Diesel liked it, so we might just get a The Last Witch Hunter...

A group of screenwriters including Eli Roth, Graham Yost and Amy Chozick have issued an open letter decrying the Writers Guild of America’s silence on last week’s Hamas terrorist attacks in Israel.
In the letter, posted to the blog site Medium, the screenwriters mention the statements already issued by other Hollywood guilds, including SAG-AFTRA and the directors’ guild.
“When it comes to taking a stand, the Writers Guild of America has always led by example,” the statement said. “When employers sought to exploit our work, the Guild bravely spoke up. When the BLM movement took flight, the Guild rightfully spoke up. When the #MeToo reckoning came and Hollywood needed to change, again the Guild spoke up. But when terrorists invaded Israel to murder, rape, and kidnap Jews… the Guild stayed silent. It remains the only major Hollywood union to do so.”

Jonah Hill is stepping behind the camera again with another topic close to his heart. After his 2018 directorial debut Mid90s, which was an autobiographical look at a young boy’s coming of age amongst a group of skaters, Hill will be directing a documentary for Netflix about therapy, using his own therapist as the focus. Dr. Phil Stutz will be at the center of Hill’s documentary, which he says on Instagram will “frame therapy and Phil’s tools for dealing with life in a way that isn’t corny or cheesy.” In an exciting addition, it is reported that the film will also feature an interactive component that will be able to assist people who are unable to obtain therapy to get the tools and information they need Joaquin Phoenix, who co-starred with Hill in the Gus Van Sant film Don’t Worry, He Won’t Get Far on Foot, will...

Crawl director Alexandre Aja has a new horror movie in the works: Elijah. The Searchlight Pictures film involves a young boy who invites a mysterious man into his house, which in turn results in “disturbing things.” Yeah, that’ll happen. The movie originated as a pitch from The Last Witch Hunter writer Cory Goodman, with Gregory Levasseur now handling the […]

Exclusive: We can tell you first that French filmmaker Alexandre Aja is set to direct the horror feature Elijah for Searchlight Pictures as the newly owned Disney label continues a streak with genre fare following last year’s Ready or Not and Scott Cooper and Guillermo del Toro’s Antlers.
The Last Witch Hunter scribe Cory Goodman sold the original pitch to Searchlight before Aja came in to direct, and rewrite with Gregory Levasseur (Mirrors). Pic follows a young boy who invites a mysterious man into his home, believing the stranger to be the key to saving his sick mother. As increasingly disturbing things start to happen around his home, the boy soon realizes that the sinister stranger is not the savior he claims to be.
Producers are David Goyer and Keith Levine of Phantom Four (The Night House) and Adam Goldworm of Aperture Entertainment.

Exclusive: Paramount Pictures has picked up Blessed Event, a spec script by Jeremy Lott based on a true WWII story. The pic is set at Temple Hill, which inked a multi-year first-look film deal with the studio earlier this year. Temple Hill’s Marty Bowen, Issac Klausner, and John Fischer will produce the project with Adam Goldworm serving as executive producer.
Set in the South Pacific during WWII, the film is about the American crew of a B-24 Liberator Bomber who pilots their wounded plane through a gauntlet of enemy fighters and anti-aircraft guns to complete an improbable but critical mission behind enemy lines.
Lott was initially inspired by a local news interview with the bomber’s tail gunner who was finally getting his medals after more than 70 years. This led to his five-year research stint where he tracked down and met with the tail gunner and family members of the rest of the crew,...

Exclusive: Cory Goodman & Jeremy Lott have sold an original family-themed Christmas adventure pitch to Paramount. Studio is keeping plot and title under wraps.
Original Film’s Neal Moritz & Amanda Lewis and Aperture Entertainment’s Adam Goldworm will produce.
This marks the third sale for Goodman & Lott, who scored in the seven figures for a Warner Bros deal for Lore that has Dwayne Johnson attached, and one to Sony for Hood, with Jerry Bruckheimer producing. Goodman separately sold his spec The Oberlin Incident to Paramount with Aperture producing, and wrote the Kate Beckinsale-starrer Underworld: Blood Wars, the Vin Diesel-starrer The Last Witch Hunter and the Paul Bettany-starrer Priest.
Lott wrote Man At Arms for Jonathan Liebesman with Thunder Road and Aperture Entertainment producing and Rally Car for Keanu Reeves to star with Fundamental producing.
Goodman is repped by Verve and Aperture Entertainment. Lott is repped by CAA and Aperture.

Ah, the ’90s. Headlines of huge spec sales and bidding wars filled the trades. The spec screenplay replaced the Great American Novel as the pastime everyone and his uncle was working on. If you could write a halfway decent actioner or rom/com, you had a shot in Hollywood.
Not so much today. According to Gointothestory.com, there were 173 spec sales in 1995… and 62 in 2017. Ouch! But do those numbers tell the whole story? “There was a long period when financiers weren’t buying as much,” UTA agent Alex Rincon said. “In the last 18 months, they have perhaps looked at their development slates and realized there was not as much original development as they had hoped and got slightly more aggressive.”
Indeed, things are heating up. Spec sales are again making headlines — witness the recent sale of not one but two specs by Emilia Serrano to Sony. Verve partner David Boxerbaum is positively upbeat.

Exclusive: Paramount just won an auction for The Oberlin Incident, a spec by Cory Goodman that Safehouse and Aperture will produce. Studio’s keeping logline on the down-low, but it’s described to me as a horror thriller. Deal was high six figures.
Joby Harold and Tory Tunnell at Safehouse Pictures and Adam Goldworm at Aperture Entertainment developed the script with Goodman. Pace of this deal shows the appetite for material that can be turned into movies quickly. Verve sent the script out to buyers Monday afternoon, and there were multiple bidders by the following day with Paramount prevailing late Tuesday evening.
Goodman’s specs have gotten buyers hot and bothered before, as he sold several potential franchise starters as pitches and specs resulting in seven-figures deals that included Hood to Sony and Lore to Warner Bros. He also wrote the Black List script The Last Witch Hunter, Underworld: Blood Wars and Priest.

The last time we saw Kate Beckinsale’s blood-sucking, wolf-slaying, blade swishing Selene she was battling a digital were-blob in a car park at the arse end of Underworld: Awakening: the abominable third sequel which belted the franchise into apparent oblivion. Failing to keep her promise of reclaiming the world from Lycans, made during Awakening’s tepid finale, Selene vanished from our screens. Five years later and following a staggering turn in Love and Friendship, Kate Beckinsale returns, back on autopilot, into her comfort zone and to the role that made her famous. While half a decade can’t quite waft away the stench of its putrid predecessor, Underworld: Blood Wars is surprisingly decent and easily the best of the franchise so far.

Five movies in, the Underworld series—the day-for-night soap opera to Resident Evil’s pulp anthology—remains humorlessly committed to the eternal conflict between high-tech, goth-industrial Draculoids and their grungy werewolf foes, soldiering on with its post-Matrix aesthetic of pleather catsuits, submachine guns, and floor-length coats with way too many buckles. Too rote to be trash, it has to make do with being mere junk, impatiently exposing more incoherent machinations and more condo-board-like council meetings involving the dullest vampires in moviedom. Written by Cory Goodman (Priest, The Last Witch Hunter) and directed with sort-of-competence by the longtime Roland Emmerich associate Anna Foerster, the new, generically titled Underworld: Blood Wars is everything an entry in this notoriously interchangeable series is supposed to be, though anyone expecting it to be good has walked into the wrong theater. It has murky werewolf-on-vampire action, dialogue that sounds lifted from a dubbed early ’60s ...

‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ Review Roundup: Critics Say the Franchise Needs a ‘Stake Through the Heart’
Kate Beckinsale returns as the “Vampire Death Dealer” Selene in “Underworld: Blood Wars,” the fifth installment in the action-horror franchise. While hardcore fans of the supernatural series may find delight in the new movie, critics aren’t so thrilled with it.
Variety’s Owen Gleiberman writes:
“[The film] should satisfy fans of the ‘Underworld’ movies just enough to live up to the previous films’ success … and to guarantee that Beckinsale, if she so chooses, can ride out this saga some more.”
The Hollywood Reporter‘s Frank Scheck’s bottom line was, “This anemic franchise desperately needs a transfusion,” adding in his review:
“Strictly for rabid fans, ‘Underworld: Blood Wars’ is a generic, by-the-numbers genre exercise that, for all its talk of blood, is strictly anemic. It’s particularly depressing to see Kate Beckinsale once again don her tight black spandex outfit after displaying her versatility and comic skills in ‘Love & Friendship.’”

The promotional snippets for Underworld: Blood Wars have been coming thick and fast ahead of the movie’s January 6th release date, and so far, have kept very much to intrigue and action-based ‘money shots.’ Just two days ago, an international trailer appeared, and reshuffled much of what we’ve already been teased with. Now, we’re moving into the closing stages of this marketing campaign, and it seems that Screen Gems have decided to leave it all on the trailer screen.
The Underworld franchise has been one of the more lucrative female-led action film series, with a total worldwide box office haul of $458.5 million from four films. Kate Beckinsale's fifth adventure as the Vampire Death Dealer Selene will be titled Underworld: Blood Wars. Co-producers Screen Gems & Lakeshore Entertainment made the announcement earlier today on the film's official Facebook page. Anna Foerster (Outlander) directed the feature, which wrapped principal photography earlier this year, with a script from Cory Goodman (The Last Witch Hunter). Joining Beckinsale are Theo James, who reprises his role from the previous installment, Tobias Menzies (Outlander), Lara Pulver (Edge Of Tomorrow), Charles Dance (Game Of Thrones), Bradley James (iZombie), James Faulkner (Da Vinci's Demons), Oliver Stark (Into The Badlands), Peter Andersson (Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit), Clementine Nicholson, and Daisy Head (The Syndicate). The film will arrive in theaters just in time for Halloween on October 14, a week ahead of the Tom Cruise-starrer Jack Reacher: Never Go Back. There are also a few early rumors circulating that suggest a sixth film with Beckinsale is already being planned.

It would seem, given the critical reaction to this film, that the general consensus is that outside the Fast & Furious franchise Vin Diesel can’t headline a movie. Critical reaction is wrong. The Last Witch Hunter is a fantastic example of Vin Diesel’s pre-Fast franchise career – making interesting choices in characters and story. Personally I’ve waited a long time for a Vin Diesel movie as enjoyable as this, which is easily up there with Diesel’s sci-fi horror Pitch Black (I dare say its actually better than that films immediate follow-up too).

Chicago – You will see many many better movies this year, but you’re unlikely to see one quite this batshit crazy. I’ll give Vin Diesel this much credit, at least he’s created a memorably awful blockbuster instead of one that simply fades off into the moonlight.
Rating: 1.5/5.0
The filmmakers seem to have started with the image of Vin Diesel scowling while holding a large flaming sword, and then reverse engineered the story from there, no doubt trying to stifle chuckles all the way. After all, this is a movie that begins and ends with Diesel facing off in an epic battle against a tree – and that tree is more rooted in reality than anything else in this movie.
“The Last Witch Hunter” casts Diesel as a medieval warrior (looking like an oversized extra from Peter Jackson’s “The Hobbit). He eventually thrusts his trusty flaming sword through a medieval witch,...

Imagine a parallel universe where Harry Potter got pumped up on steroids and you'll have an idea of what to expect from The Last Witch Hunter. Vin Diesel is the unfortunate soul charged with banishing wicked witchery from the world, the kind of man you'd want on your side in a bar fight with supernatural heavies - as opposed to a small British schoolboy.
Like most Vin Diesel films, this lacks wit and subtlety, going full-throttle instead on action thrills. But also like most Vin Diesel movies, this is perfectly likeable nonsense - only this time with flaming swords, instead of smouldering tyres.
Adrenaline and what looks like molten lava start coursing as early as scene one, which sees the moment Kaulder (Diesel) is made immortal by the Witch Queen (a latex-encased Julie Engelbrecht) while he drives a fiery sword through her body.
As evil curses go, living forever doesn't seem bad,...

Vin Diesel gets what could be the start of a new action fantasy franchise with The Last Witch Hunter. Here's our review...
Director Breck Eisner’s 2010 remake of George Romero's The Crazies was far better made and considered than it might otherwise have been, so it makes sense that he’s managed to turn what might have been a pot-boiling action fantasy into a visually-arresting and fun vehicle for growling action man Vin Diesel.
As a contrast, take a look at 2011’s Season Of The Witch as an example of how badly an effects-heavy fantasy movie can go wrong; Nicolas Cage looked glum underneath his lank Cher wig, Ron Perlman was given little to do and the numerous sword fights and the screaming necromancer of a plot failed to add up to a hill of beans.
The Last Witch Hunter largely succeeds because it’s aware...

Last November, I had a chance to sit down and talk to Vin Diesel on the set of his upcoming fantasy film “The Last Witch Hunter.” Ostensibly we were supposed to discuss Diesel's immortal witch hunter character Kaulder and how the lore of the witch world differs from any other telling audiences have ever seen. Instead we talked about Dungeons & Dragons. Oops? What was it about “The Last Witch Hunter” that attracted you? Vin Diesel: Let me go way back. For the 30th anniversary Dungeons and Dragons the company at the time asked me to write the foreword for the book. [In it] I talked about my experience growing up playing Dungeons and Dragons religiously. I even talked about a character that I had named Melkor — a name that obviously I stole from “The Silmarillion” — and [how] that character was a witch hunter. [Then] about four years ago I met with a writer...

Visiting a movie set is always an adventure into the unknown. Will you be on a sound stage or oudoors? On location or in the comfort of a climate controlled warehouse? In the case of Lionsgate’s “The Last Witch Hunter” last November, the answer was weirdly…“yes.” It was a cold day in Pittsburgh when the publicist herded us onto the bus to see Breck Eisner’s vision for a world of witches and those who hunt them. I’d been told to dress for the weather and be prepared for a long day, none of which sounded appealing. Who wants to be outside for twelve hours in sub-freezing temperature? No one. Driving through a Pittsburgh forest stripped bare for the winter, Lionsgate had other plans. We were about to enter the literal underground world of “The Last Witch Hunter.” Pittsburgh is rich with abandoned limestone mines like the one converted by Wampum Underground.

One thing I took away from my visit to the set of Lionsgate's The Last Witch Hunter in November of last year is that the cast and crew are very proud to be working on a film not based on a pre-exisiting property. It isn't an adaptation of a novel/comic book/video game, nor is it a reboot or remake. In fact, Cory Goodman wrote the original script for the film after hearing Vin Diesel use to play... "None of this is real... You are in a trap!" Flame sword activated! My goodness this looks like an awful mess. Universal has debuted another new trailer for Breck Eisner's The Last Witch Hunter, starring Vin Diesel as "Kaulder" the last witch hunter, which has been delayed for years. We've featured two trailers for this previously, but this one is an obvious desperate attempt to sell this hunk of junk to as many people as possible. Selfies, flaming swords, Vin Diesel in front of a sexy car? Come on. Is that car even in the movie? Hopefully this is the last trailer we'll ever have to post for this, I'm ready to move on and forget it already. Here's the newest trailer for Breck Eisner's The Last Witch Hunter, direct from Universal's YouTube: The Last Witch Hunter is directed by Breck Eisner (The Crazies) and written by Melisa Wallack (Dallas Buyers Club,...
