Kateryna Gornostai’s Timestamp led the industry winners at Cph:dox film festival last night, taking the Eurimages New Lab award for Outreach.
The award, worth €30,000, is given to promote public awareness of an innovative and experimental project near the end of production or in post-production.
Timestamp is produced by Olha Beskhmelnytsina for Ukraine’s 2Brave Productions and Natalia Libet for the Netherlands’ Rinkel Film & Docs. It was chosen by a jury of producer Emile Hertling Peronard, consultant Eleni Chandrinou and The Storyboard Collective executive Patricia Finneran.
Filmed from 2023 to 2024, Timestamp documents the everyday lives of teachers and schoolchildren in Ukraine under martial law.

After six-days of intense pitching and networking from 2,023 accredited docu industry guests, Copenhagen’s Cph:dox industry showcase wrapped Thursday with an awards ceremony, where two urgent projects tackling the current war in Ukraine and the complex Israeli and Palestinian conflict were handed out prizes.
The Ukrainian documentary “Timestamp” by Kateryna Gornostai scooped the biggest cash prize of €30,000 associated to the new Eurimages Outreach Award. The project, to be delivered later this year, chronicles the wartime school years 2023-24, through the everyday lives of kids and their teachers during martial law. Ukraine’s 2Brave Productions is producing, together with Dutch outfit Rinkel Film & Docs.
Praising the film’s “highly cinematic film that avoids traditional narrative structures, the jury said in its motivation statement: “This war movie takes place far from the frontline where soldiers, mostly men, fight for their country. It is the story of teachers, mostly women, who fight to...

Though Canada’s National Film Board has invested in interactive projects for well over a decade, 2020 has proven to be a banner year for the publicly funded organization, as three of their VR productions made waves across the international festival circuit.
This past January, director Randall Okita’s “The Book of Distance” premiered at Sundance, kicking off a yearlong festival tour that took the immersive doc from Tribeca to Bucheon to Venice. On the Lido, Okita’s critically acclaimed doc was joined by two other Nfb co-productions, Pietro Gagliano’s “Agence” and Michelle and Uri Kranot’s “The Hangman at Home,” the latter of which would go on to win the festival’s grand jury prize.
Now playing at NewImages Festival in Paris ahead of additional festival dates in Ottawa, Vancouver and Montreal, “The Book of Distance” represents a new milestone for the Nfb’s interactive lab, which began to...

“Nomadland” has received the Golden Lion Award as the best film of the 2020 Venice International Film Festival, a jury headed by Cate Blanchett announced on Saturday.
The Searchlight drama, a simultaneous premiere by the Venice, Telluride and Toronto festivals, was directed by Chloe Zhao and stars Frances McDormand as a woman who travels through the American West in a van after losing her job and her home. Apart from McDormand and David Strathairn, almost all of the actors in the film are actual “nomads” that Zhao cast on her own travels through the area.
“Nuevo Orden” (“New Order”) by Mexican director Michel Franco won the Silver Lion, the festival’s second-place award, while acting prizes went to Vanessa Kirby for “Pieces of a Woman” and Pierfrancesco Favino for “Padrenostro.”
Kiyoshi Kurosawa was named the festival’s best director for “Wife of a Spy.”

MIFA’s Work in Progress presentations offered online delegates a glimpse into some highly anticipated features, series and interactive projects in the second week of Annecy’s online festival.
Leading the pack was upcoming America-Canadian animated TV series from Netflix “The Cuphead Show!” – based on the characters in the best-selling Canadian “gun and run” video game “Cuphead.”
While the game has been highly praised for its authentic “rubber hose” style animation inspired by the Fleischer-produced toons of the 1930s, the TV series aims to go a step further – fleshing out some of the more minor characters and painstakingly reproducing watercolor sets for a digital production line.
According to executive producers Dave Wasson (“Micky Mouse Shorts”) and Cosmo Segurson (“Rocko’s Modern Life”), the pilot has been designed to introduce the show’s two main characters – a pair of energetic and bickering siblings called Cuphead and Mugman.

French productions are led by the hugely awaited “The Summit of the Gods,” produced by Jean-Charles Ostorero and the most ambitious movie to date from Didier and Damien Brunner.

Hi everyone, Tim here. Those who know me in my other life at Antagony & Ecstasy are well aware of my affection for animation in its many forms, and starting this week, that’s going to be carried over here to the Film Experience. Officially, as of now, this space will be home to a weekly column about the current world of animation with, I suspect, regular guest appearances from classics of both American and international animated cinema.
And there's some pretty exciting news to kick things off. The 39th annual Festival du Nouveau Cinema is set to run in Montreal on Oct 13-24. But, within the overall, massive festival is the Fnc Lab, the avant-garde and experimental section that will be having screenings and live film performances every night on Oct. 14-22.
This year, the Fnc Lab is showcasing two retrospectives; plus, a short film program of strictly 16mm films, films from the Korean Jeonju Digital Project, four feature-length projects and several special one-of-a-kind performances.
The retrospectives are of two key American women experimental filmmakers. First, in conjunction with the Double Negative Collective, the fest presents a career overview of Chick Strand, the eminent ethnographic filmmaker who sadly passed away last year at the age of 77.
Then, there’s also a retrospective of playful avant-garde filmmaker Marie Losier, who is well known for her collaborations with and film portraits of key underground figures like George Kuchar, Tony Conrad and Genesis P-Orridge.
