Since George Lucas got out of the Star Wars business, he's been lending his Hollywood heft to some long-gestating passion projects that might be difficult to produce independently elsewhere. He started developing Red Tails, a war movie about the Tuskegee airmen, back in 1988 and eventually served as producer and an uncredited co-director on the 2012 movie.
Lucasfilm's latest, Strange Magic, is directed by Oscar-winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom, but it's also been around for much longer than you'd think. 15 years ago, while working on that pesky prequel trilogy, Lucas started thinking about making a film for his daughters. “Just like Star Wars was designed for 12-year-old boys,” Lucas told Wired upon the film's Us release in January, “Strange Magic was designed for 12-year-old girls.”

Shakespeare’s plays have been interpreted in many different ways. The newest one, beautifully animated, is George Lucas’ Strange Magic. It is based on Midsummer Night’s Dream but uses modern music to enhance the story. The story begins explaining the separation of two kingdoms. There is the Fairy Kingdom, light and sunny, and the Dark Kingdom, dank and shadowed. The two realms are separated by a row of primrose flowers and grow between the light and shadows. The ruler of the Fairy kingdom has two daughters. Marianna (voiced by Evan Rachel Wood) is spirited and adventurous. Dawn (voiced by Meredith Anne Bull) […]...

Apparently this was inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, but it has about as much in common with that as Burger King does with Macbeth. I’m “biast” (pro): nothing
I’m “biast” (con): nothing
(what is this about? see my critic’s minifesto)
Strange Magic is the first animated feature George Lucas has had a hand in since 1988’s The Land Before Time, and he should have left well enough alone.
Lucas gets a story credit and served as executive producer, but this has the whiff of a vanity project for cowriter and director Gary Rydstrom, making his feature debut. Yes, legendary sound designer Gary Rydstrom, who’s won seven Oscars in that field and has created some of the most memorable movie noises ever for films including Terminator 2, Jurassic Park, and Minority Report, but who, the evidence of this movie suggests, has no business writing and directing a movie.

Every now and then, I find myself suddenly and unexpectedly angry at George Lucas, but not for reasons that have anything to do with "Star Wars." There has been a refrain we've heard from him over and over during the past couple of decades, where he talks about returning to his roots and making experimental films that could never exist inside the studio system, movies that aren't created to be commercial product, but that come from a very personal place. And over and over, those comments lead nowhere and nothing happens. I'd love to see him do it, though. I have a huge fondness for "Thx-1138," Lucas's first feature film, which evolved out of a student film he made. I take Lucas at his word that commercial filmmaking was never meant to be the complete detour it became after "American Graffiti" and "Star Wars" both blew up into mega-hits,...

On its way to box office supremacy and Christmas season ubiquity, Disney’s Frozen left a lot of pretenders in its dust. With the exception of Studio Ghibli’s The Wind Rises, 2013’s animated scene was defined by better-than-expected sequels, but not much else outside the sweep of Frozen‘s popularity vortex. 2014, by contrast, saw studios separate the House of Mouse putting their best foot forward, with creative successes from the aforementioned Ghibli, Aardman Animation, Dreamworks, and the house that Lego built, Animal Logic. As a showcase for the breadth of styles and narratives available, 2014 was a stellar year for animation. Strange Magic, the first animated feature of 2015, suggests such a trend ended with the calendar year.

Rubber-faced characters and a seemingly ceaseless parade of repurposed pop ditties combine to make what might be the worst animated feature Disney has ever released
Well, now we know what a Las Vegas show designed for eight-year-olds would look like.
The advance marketing on producer George Lucas’ “Strange Magic” suggested a retread of the not-all-that-memorable 2013 cartoon “Epic.” And yes, this fairies-versus-bugs story does recall that earlier film, but “Magic” also ladles in unwieldy dollops of “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” “Moulin Rouge!” and a particularly long and excruciating episode of “American Idol.”

Like any decent trick, "Strange Magic" came about as a bit of a surprise. Instead of the usual multi-year lead-up of most animated film releases, the release announcement for this film came as a bit of a shock when its beans were spilled last November.
The project is directed by Gary Rydstrom, a sound designer and editor credited with the majority of the most popular live-action and animated films ever made, from "Toy Story" to "Titanic," with the "Star Wars" prequels, "Jurassic Park," and "Saving Private Ryan" under his belt. He has 17 Oscar nominations (with seven wins), yet this is the first time he's credited as the director of a film.
The story is credited to Rydstrom's boss at Skywalker Sound, the one and only George Lucas. This is a straight-up fairy tale, complete with dark forests, goblins, elves and the like.
Oh, dear. Are you going to be some Lucas fanboy about this?...

“Strange Magic,” a new animated film from Lucasfilm Ltd., is a fairy tale—but not your average fairy tale. It’s a madcap musical with a princess who has sworn off love, a vulnerable villain, a slightly nutty Sugar Plum Fairy, a tenacious and big-hearted elf, a mischievous imp, and a knight who is no Prince Charming.
With Marius DeVries serving as musical director and soundtrack producer, the Strange Magic digital soundtrack from Buena Vista Records is now available at digital retail.
The physical CD will be available on Feb. 17. “Strange Magic” from Touchstone Pictures will be in theaters on Jan. 23, 2015.
“Strange Magic” welcomes an extraordinary roster of voice talent, including Alan Cumming (CBS’ “The Good Wife,” Broadway’s “Cabaret”) as Bog King, Evan Rachel Wood (“The Ides of March“) as feisty fairy Marianne, Elijah Kelley (“Hairspray,” “Lee Daniels’The Butler”) as lovelorn elf Sunny, newcomer Meredith Anne Bull as Marianne’s lovesick sister Dawn,...

A couple of weeks ago, the world at large learned of the existence of Strange Magic, an animated adventure based on an idea by George Lucas that had quietly been developing at his Lucasfilm company under the aegis of director Gary Rydstrom. With the movie arriving in the Us in a couple of months, the trailer has now appeared. Strange Magic is set in a world where the kingdoms of the magical and the mysterious are linked but never meet. Then an interloper crosses the border and all manner of chaos breaks out, mostly to do with a powerful potion that both sides wish control over. Loosely based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream, the film is powered along by pop songs that apparently help tell the story, even if it all seems a little basic in terms of plot. The cast includes Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth,...

George Lucas might have sold off Lucasfilm for a hefty $4 billion, but that doesn’t mean his creative output has ceased. Prior to unloading Lucasfilm onto Disney, the iconic filmmaker had begun work on an animated musical feature loosely based on A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Touted to be a “madcap fairy tale,” Strange Magic was only very recently revealed to the world. With its release date coming up fast, the first trailer has now dropped, courtesy of Yahoo!
For his first full-length feature, Oscar-winning director Gary Rydstrom has assembled a starry cast to provide vocal talents for his crew of goblins, elves and fairies. Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Alfred Molina, Peter Stormare, Sam Palladio, Meredith Anne Bull and Elijah Kelley all make ‘appearances’ in this first preview.
Taking a glance at this first footage, the Shrek-inspired vibe suggests it’s being aimed at a younger market.

Before George Lucas sold Lucasfilm to Disney he was producing an animated feature film called Strange Magic. The movie is based on an original idea from Lucas, and it's a fairy tale musical that was inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The story follows a “colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion.”
The movie was directed by Gary Rydstrom (Toy Story‘s Hawaiian Vacation), and today we have the first trailer for you to watch. This is definitely geared more towards kids, but it still looks like a lot of fun.
The movie features the voice talent of Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein, Peter Stormare, and Meredith Anne Bull.
Strange Magic will open in theaters on January 23rd, 2015.

Okay, so it's not the trailer for "Star Wars: Episode VII — The Force Awakens," but the below is something from the mind of George Lucas. Inspired by William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream," "Strange Magic" is an animated tale that he wrote, and hey, it's not everyday you hear about something like that. Featuring the voices of Alan Cumming, Evan Rachel Wood, Kristin Chenoweth, Maya Rudolph, Sam Palladio, Meredith Anne Bull, Alfred Molina, Elijah Kelley, Bob Einstein and Peter Stormare, the movie lines up a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and follows their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. Now toss in some popular songs from the past six decades and you get....this. What ever happened to "I"m-gonna-make-experimental-movies-in-my-garage" George Lucas? Anyway, this opens on January 23, 2015. Watch below.
