Along with its streamer competitors like Netflix and Hulu, Lifetime isn't shy about tackling true-crime stories on screen, ranging from Casey Anthony to JonBenét Ramsey. The network is again dabbling in the genre with the upcoming movie "Let's Get Physical," a story that is just as bizarre and unbelievable as it is true. The movie, which stars Jenna Dewan as lead character Sadie, centers around one woman's double life as a dance instructor and head of a prostitution business.
"Let's Get Physical" is based on the true story of Alexis Wright, who, in 2012, was charged with leading a prostitution ring out of her Zumba dance studio and collecting nearly 150,000 from her services. Ahead of the film's release on Oct. 15, let's dive into the real story that inspired "Let's Get Physical."

Netflix learned an important lesson from the mammoth success of "Making a Murderer," and that lesson was that people love murder shows. In the almost 7 years since "Making a Murderer" debuted on the streaming service, Netflix's collection of true crime originals has exploded, expanding beyond the straightforward subject matter of murder mysteries to include stranger hits like "Tiger King," "The Tinder Swindler," and "Don't F**k With Cats."
There have also been more experimental takes on the familiar genre, like "Casting JonBenet," a film that approached the well-documented horror of six-year-old JonBenét Ramsey's still-unsolved murder through the process of auditioning local actors from the Ramseys' home town Boulder, Colorado, for a reenactment of the murder.
But perhaps the best offering from Netflix's true crime collection is a show that dropped the "true" part entirely. Mockumentary series "American Vandal" was a deft examination of how Gen Z has been shaped...

As much as people want to have answers, sometimes there are none. It's hard to accept that, much like Jon Benet Ramsey's murder or the Zodiac Killer's identity, Kathleen Peterson's death may remain a mystery. Sure, people can make assumptions about what happened on the night of Dec. 9, 2001, but no one will really know how it is that Kathleen, played by Toni Collette in The Staircase, died that night. And while it's only human to speculate about whether Kathleen's husband Michael Peterson, played by Colin Firth, killed her (he entered an Alford plea in 2017, in which he maintained his innocence while acknowledging there's enough evidence to...

In an effort to put the spotlight on stories surrounding missing persons of color, “Access Hollywood” is teaming up with the Black and Missing Foundation for a monthly true crime segment that will bring focus to stories that are often left out of mainstream coverage.
Variety has exclusively learned of “Access Hollywood’s” special coverage initiative, which is intently designed to call attention to missing persons of color. The monthly on-air segments will be hosted by correspondent Zuri Hall.
The first segment will air tonight, as the entertainment news show digs into the case of Tiffany Foster, a mother of three who went missing in Georgia last year.
“It is my honor and privilege to play even a small role in highlighting the cases of missing Black men, women, and children in America,” said Hall, an “Access Hollywood” correspondent. “The fact that Black cases remain unresolved four times longer than...

Freeform's latest thriller, Cruel Summer, is reminiscent of predecessors such as Pretty Little Liars with flashbacks, twists and turns, unsuspecting victims, and criminals - but is it purely fictional? The series takes place in a small, fictional Texas town over the course of three summers and centers on the disappearance of beautiful, popular teenager Kate and how unpopular girl Jeanette seemingly takes her place while she's missing. While Cruel Summer isn't based on a true story, there have been nods to some very famous true-crime cases. If you've been paying close attention, you might've picked up on a few.
In episode two, during a '95 scene, Kate is talking to her dad in their kitchen and she is eating pineapple chunks in milk. This is a reference to the JonBenét Ramsey case from the late '90s; true-crime aficionados will have picked up on that immediately, as it is...

Chicago – Gratefully, we live in a post-Weinstein environment of #metoo, and one of the first films to comment upon it is “The Assistant,” written and directed by Kitty Green. Coming off its run at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, the film explores a low level female production assistant (Pa) as she navigates an office overwhelmed by a successful-but-abusive bossman.
Day After Day: Julia Garner is ‘The Assistant’

Interestingly, writer/director Green creates a mundane atmosphere for Pa Jane (Julia Garner), who has been on the job for five weeks at the film company. What she observes and experiences is appalling conduct from the powerful head of the company, both in his sexual manipulation and anger-addicted abuse. What is unique about the film’s statement is that the whole office is complicit, as to excuse the behavior means holding onto their highly sought-after jobs, and staying quiet about mistreatment.

News broke on June 12 that celebrity chef Anthony Bourdain tragically took his own life in Paris, but Netflix quickly jumped in to make sure his legacy lives on. Anthony was the star of the CNN series, Anthony Bourdain: Parts Unknown, that premiered on the streaming service in 2013, and explored different parts of the world using the local cuisine as a focal point. However, back in May, Netflix announced which movies and shows were going to end in June, and Parts Unknown had made the list — it was scheduled leave on June 16. But, after Anthony's death, fans became incredibly interested in not only his life, but also the shows he created. A petition was started on Change.org to keep Parts Unknown on Netflix, and it garnered almost 7,000 signatures. (Photo Credit: Getty Images) So, just hours after the world found out about Anthony's passing and fans created this petition, Netflix changed their tune.

He was shot outside of his office on May 31 in Scottsdale, Az, along with four other victims in the surrounding area. The man who allegedly killed these people, Dwight Jones, became a prime suspect in the case after Richard Anglin, a retired investigator currently married to Dwight's ex-wife, Connie Jones, had a hunch that her ex-husband was behind the murders. Anglin went to the police and explained how all of the victims somehow connected to Connie's divorce — including Pitt who evaluated Jones in 2010 after he was arrested in 2009 on a domestic violence charge, CBS News reports. Over the course of 14 seasons, Forensic Files haunted viewers with hundreds of true crime and murder cases — all of which were narrated by Peter Thomas — but some were more memorable than others. From the killer who ripped out eyeballs to the rapist who implanted himself with another man's blood, here are nine of the best Forensic Files episodes… some of which you can find on Netflix! Forensic Files "See No Evil" In 1991, police investigated a series of grisly murders of Dallas-area sex workers. In each case, the victim had her eyes carved out. The media rabidly reported the crimes until the man known as the "Eyeball Killer" was finally apprehended. Forensic Files "Invisible Intruder" This case, soon to be revisited by the ABC docu-series The Last Defense, focused on Darlie Routier, a woman from Rowlett, TX, whose two young sons were stabbed to death in 1996. Even on death row, however,...

It's been more than 20 years since JonBenét Ramsey was found murdered in her parents' Boulder, Co, home, but now her father may allow authorities to open up the case once more. According to a new report, John is considering giving investigators permission to exhume his daughter's body. A cold case unit has been created to solve the crime using modern techniques, which recently led authorities to the Golden State Killer. "I am very pleased the new district attorney is setting up a cold case team," John told Radar Online. "That is often the only way older cases are solved. I'm hoping JonBenét's case is the first one they work on." The six-year-old beauty queen was found murdered in her parents' upscale home on Dec. 26, 1996. The killer broke into their basement and snuck up to her bedroom where she was sleeping. Investigators said she was carried to the basement, bound, silenced with duct tape,...

He goes by many epithets — the Golden State Killer, the Original Night Stalker, the Diamond Knot Killer, the East Area Rapist — but the world might finally know the real name of the man behind at least 12 murders and 45 rapes in California between 1976 and 1986. On April 24, authorities arrested 72-year-old Joseph James DeAngelo in a suburb of Sacramento, CA, after his DNA matched evidence in the 40-year investigation. So who is this suspected Golden State Killer? For six years in the 1970s, DeAngelo actually worked as a police officer in the Californian cities of Auburn and Exeter. He was eventually fired for shoplifting a can of dog repellent and a hammer from a drugstore, according to CNN. "Very possibly he was committing these crimes during the time he was employed as a peace officer, and obviously we'll be looking into whether it was actually on the job," Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones said.

The death of Kathleen Peterson led to not just one of the most infamous murder trials but one of the most prolonged. Kathleen's husband, Michael Peterson, just recently walked free, a decade and a half after her death, but some people still think he's responsible. Others, as you'll see below, say an owl is a real culprit. And now Investigation Discovery is reexamining the case with An American Murder Mystery: The Staircase. Here's the backstory: In the early morning hours of Dec. 9, 2001, a then-58-year-old Mike called 911 to say his 48-year-old wife had fallen down a staircase at their home in Durham, Nc. Mike — a novelist, a military veteran, and a one-time Durham mayoral candidate — said he'd come in from the backyard to find her dead. And he said she'd been drinking. Sure enough, her blood alcohol level was 0.07, but the autopsy report also determined she'd suffered head trauma consistent with a beating.

As the saying goes, "hell hath no fury like a woman scorned" and the chilling case of Lorena and John Bobbitt is most definitely proof of that! After the trial revelead a sordid history of domestic violence, infidelity, and emotional abuse, Lorena was eventually found not guilty due to reasons of insanity. As for John's injury, law enforcement was able to locate the severed penis and after a nine hour procedure, it was reattached. In the 20-plus years since JonBenét Ramsey was senselessly killed at just six years old, true crime fans everywhere poured over the evidence, trying their best to find any shred of evidence that could explain who was responsible for this senseless crime — with some people suspecting it was her parents, and others pointing their fingers at the possibility of an intruder. For years, people pointed to the ransom note as “proof” that her murder was an accident, later covered up by her parents — but new evidence unearthed suggests that new suspect, Glenn Meyer, could have written the ransom note. According to Radar Online, Meyer — who has since passed away — was interviewed at the time in relation to the pint-sized beauty queen’s death. Fans first urged authorities to exhume Meyer’s body after his wife came forward, admitting that she believed her late husband was responsible for the murder. Since then,...

As In Touch exclusively revealed earlier this morning, O.J. Simpson described the 1994 murders of Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman in shocking detail during a series of secret 2006 meetings for his chilling, supposedly hypothetical book, If I Did It. Now, in a preview for Fox’s upcoming special O.J. Simpson: The Lost Confession?, his publisher Judith Regan reveals that she was given the impression that O.J. was ready to take responsibility for the brutal deaths of his ex-wife and her friend. "I received a phone call from an attorney that said O.J. was ready to confess. And actually, I thought it was some kind of a scam and I didn’t believe him and I thought this guy’s a lunatic," Judith says in a clip, obtained by TMZ. "But I took his number and said I’d call him back and the next day I called him back.

It's no surprise that prolific super-novelist Joyce Carol Oates, with her appetite for revealing Gothic horrors in family sagas, would choose to pick up the JonBenet Ramsey case for her latest true-crime effort. (1995's "Zombie," about Jeffrey Dahmer, was another notable one.) Beauty pageants become ice-skating competitions and suburban Colorado is swapped for old-money New Jersey in My Sister, My Love, but the disclaimer at the front of the book only makes it clearer how closely the story following hews to what is known about the still-unsolved murder case—and how unsatisfying people still find its meager facts. Oates' novel explores the Ramsey case through an observer whom even dedicated CNN viewers might not have been aware of: the victim's older brother. Now 19 and estranged from his parents, Skyler Rampike is holed up in a dingy New Brunswick boarding house, writing a tell-all whose copious footnotes, crossed-out lines,...

The syndicated newsmagazines got a ratings bump during the week ending Aug. 20 with their coverage of the Jonbenet Ramsey murder case arrest. Nearly all of the newsmagazines were up from the previous week and from the same period a year ago thanks to their coverage related to John Mark Karr, who was arrested Aug. 16 in Bangkok, Thailand, as a suspect in the murder of 6-year-old Ramsey nearly a decade ago. The Boulder (Colo.) County District Attorney's office has since ruled that DNA evidence shows that Karr, who had confessed to the murder when he was arrested, could not have been the killer. Top-rated newsmagazine "Entertainment Tonight" averaged a 4.4 household rating, according to Nielsen Media Research. That figure is up 5% from the show's previous weekly rating and up 7% from a year ago. Helping boost the ratings was an interview with Pam Paugh, the sister of JonBenet's mother, the late Patsy Ramsey.
