Exclusive: Warner Bros. Television Group has announced the seven directors selected for the 2022 Wbtv Directors’ Workshop.
The 2022 edition will be the first in-person class of the workship since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic.
The Wbtv Directors’ Workshop launched in 2013 with the aim to discover new and innovative talent, to prepare directors from other creative fields for the transition to television, and to provide increased opportunities for women helmers and those from underrepresented groups. Since its founding, the Directors’ Workshop has helped to launch or further the TV directing careers of more than 60 women and/or people of color, according to Wbtv.
This year’s class was instructed by directors Bethany Rooney and Stacey K. Black.
Prior Directors’ Workshop graduates include Bola Ogun, Stacey Muhammad, Pamela Romanowsky, Marcus Stokes, Jennifer Phang, Alexis Ostrander, Sherwin Shilati, Michael Goi, Antonio Negret, Jude Weng, and Jaffar Mahmood, among many others.
The following participants, culled from more than 650 applicants, comprise the Class of 2022:
Kayla Compton is set to direct an episode of Warner Bros. Television/The CW’s DC drama The Flash. Originally from Jacksonville, Florida, she has been writing and directing since the age of 8 and acting professionally in Los Angeles for 12 years. Kayla recently wrote and directed the short film In Training, which is currently on the festival circuit. She also currently plays the role of DC Super Hero Allegra Garcia on The Flash.
Claire Fowler, a Welsh writer and director, is set to direct an episode of Wbtv/Netflix’s Manifest. After studying at Oxford University, she made several documentaries focused on human rights before attending Columbia University’s M.F.A. program in film on a Fulbright scholarship. She has since participated in AFI’s Directing Workshop for Women, the Ryan Murphy Half program, and the Sony Directing program. Her short films have screened at more than 200 international film festivals, including Tribeca, London, Palm Springs and Outfest. In 2020, she won a BAFTA Cymru award for her short film Salam.
Tiffany Frances, a Taiwanese American writer and director, will direct an episode of Wbtv/The CW’s Kung Fu. She is an alum of the AFI Directing Workshop for Women, a Blackmagic Collective fellow, and a SeriesFest + Shondaland Women Director Mentorship Finalist. She has worked with Levi’s, Vogue, Citibank, Acura, Lancome, National Geographic, and more. She is currently developing two TV series as well as two feature films. Tiffany received her BA from Ucsd and her Mfa in Directing from the Art Center College of Design.
Calvin “Jai” Jamison Jr., a writer/director from Richmond, Va, will direct an episode of Wbtv/The CW’s Superman & Lois. He is an alum of Almanack Screenwriters (fka Nantucket Screenwriters Colony), is a Virginia Museum of Fine Arts Fellow, and a graduate of Hampton University, and American University’s Mfa Film program. His feature film Tri led to his selection for the Shoot Magazine New Director’s Showcase. Slave Cry, his most recent short film, won The Commonwealth Award at the Virginia Film Festival and screened at the 2021 Pan African Film Festival. He is currently a story editor on Superman & Lois.
Leon Lozano, an Oakland native, will direct an episode of Wbtv/The CW’s acclaimed drama All American: Homecoming. He is the founder of Son of Oakland Productions. His directing credits include Renée, an episode of Tales set to premiere this summer on BET Network, and the short film My Father Belize, which premiered at the 2021 Festival de Cannes Short Film Corner. Lozano is currently in post-production on his feature film A Little Hope for Chicago and his documentary short Prom Night Flex.
Geeta Malik will be directing an upcoming episode of the breakout Wbtv/ABC hit comedy Abbott Elementary. Malik is an award-winning writer and director whose accolades include the inaugural Academy Gold Fellowship for Women and the Academy Nicholl Fellowship. She won the Austin Film Festival Comedy Screenplay Award for her feature script Dinner with Friends, later retitled to India Sweet and Spices, which she also directed. Exclusive: Actor James Cromwell is teaming up with Janek Ambros of Assembly Line Entertainment and Nando Vila of Pop Front Pictures to produce Nixon’s Nixon, a film based on Russell Lees’ play of the same name, which Ambros adapted for the screen and will direct.
Nixon’s Nixon marks the third collaboration between Ambros and Cromwell as director and producer, on the heels of the 2019 sci-fi comedy Mondo Hollywoodland and the 2015 war documentary Imminent Threat.
The film will be a dual portrait of former U.S. President Richard Nixon and his National Security Advisor and Secretary of State Henry Kissinger that watches as they scramble to sustain power on the eve of Nixon’s resignation. The play on which it’s based premiered to critical acclaim in 1996, playing Off-Broadway before traveling the globe through the mid-2000s. It came back to the stage in 2019, after finding...

Spoiler Alert: Do not read if you have not yet watched “Bloody Celestial Karaoke Jam,” the 10th episode of the fifth season of “Lucifer,” streaming now on Netflix.
After seasons of one-off songs, the second half of the fifth season of “Lucifer” finally delivered a full-on musical episode.
In the episode, the titular Lucifer (Tom Ellis) has to assist in solving a case while a baffling number of performances break out around him. So, when he and his partner, Chloe (Lauren German), attempt to interrogate a young suspect, he’s frustrated as the lights turn moody and the teen’s overbearing mother (guest star Debbie Gibson) breaks into the Police’s “Every Breath You Take.”
Unfortunately for Lucifer, his own father — God (Dennis Haysbert) — is also watching what’s going on from the viewing area in the next room. The camera swings between the two feuding families, utilizing lighting tricks...

The biggest huzzah from today’s DC Fandome Lucifer panel was a clip from season 5B’s upcoming musical episode, “Bloody Celestial Karoake Jam” in which our title protagonist (Tom Ellis) and Ella Lopez (Aimee Garcia) cover Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” on a football field with dancing players, cheerleaders and a high school band. An air date for season 5B has yet to be announced.
However, Wbtv isn’t dropping the clip to the general public today, just a season 4 blooper reel which you can see below.
The idea for a musical episode “began to blossom after our Vegas episodes, after Tom and Aimee did ‘Luck Be a Lady’; I remember coming into rehearsal and crying, it was so exciting,” said Lucifer showrunner Ildy Modrovich today on DC Fandome’s TV session in a conversation with the series director Sherwin Shilati.

Speed and star-power: Those are the two clear goals for the DC Fandome virtual event on Aug. 22, which released its full schedule Friday.
Over 100 hours of content stretching across the film, TV and comic book properties from DC Entertainment will unfold over a 24-hour period on the Saturday event, including panels featuring the filmmakers and casts of “The Batman,” “Wonder Woman 1984,” “The Suicide Squad” and the Snyder Cut of “Justice League,” and the casts of TV series including “DC’s Legends of Tomorrow,” “Batwoman,” “Black Lightning” and “The Flash.”
Most of those panels, however, will run just 15 to 30 minutes in length. The panel for the upcoming feature film version of “The Flash,” with filmmakers Andy and Barbara Muschietti, star Ezra Miller, and screenwriter Christina Hodson, will clock in at a speedy 10 minutes. (The briefness of that panel could also be due to unresolved questions surrounding a video of Miller appearing...

Warner Bros Television Group on Tuesday revealed the 12 directors selected for the 2020 Warner Bros Television Directors’ Workshop, which will be held virtually this year because of the coronavirus pandemic.
The redesigned program has been condensed into two weeks (from the usual nine) of online learning, with lectures led by co-teachers Bethany Rooney and Mary Lou Belli along with various showrunners, directors, cinematographers and editors. The practical directing work normally done on Warners’ sets will now be done using co-habitating actors, with the directors work with them remotely.
The program launched in 2013 with the aim to directors from other creative fields for the transition to TV, and to spur equity and inclusion by providing opportunities for female helmers and those from underrepresented groups. It has seen 100% of the graduates from the past four classes go on to direct episodes of Warner Bros–produced series. Alums include Pamela Romanowsky, Marcus Stokes, Jennifer Phang,...

In 2002, director Thomas Riedelsheimer premiered his documentary “River and Tides – Andy Goldsworthy Working With Time” at the San Francisco International Film Festival. At the time, its future was uncertain: Unlike Sundance, San Francisco wasn’t an active marketplace for movies in search of U.S. distribution. Nevertheless, the movie won a top prize at the festival and began its theatrical life at the Roxie that year before gradually finding an audience nationwide. When it opened in Chicago in early 2003, Roger Ebert gave it four stars, noting its Bay Area origin story and a history of “finding its audience not so much through word of mouth as through hand on elbow, as friends steered friends into the theater.”
Now, Riedelsheimer is returning to San Francisco with a sequel to “Rivers and Tides” called “Leaning Into the Wind,” which updates viewers on the progress of British artist Goldsworthy, and the movie has...

We've got a really fun comedy short for you to watch today that comes from writer-director Sherwin Shilati, and stars Neil Hopkins (Lost) and John Forest (Young Adult).
