"Justice League Unlimited" is a pinnacle of superhero cartoons. Had its airing not intersected with my childhood, my fascination with comics probably wouldn't have blossomed the way it did.
The terrific final product wasn't a sign of the creators always working under ideal conditions, however. In the 2000s, Warner Bros. was quite particular about letting DC Comics characters appear in more than one show at a time, apparently out of concern that audiences would be confused by multiple versions of the same character -- hence the infamous "Bat-Embargo." 2004, the year that "Justice League Unlimited" began, also saw the premiere of "The Batman," a solo cartoon about, well, Batman, but set in a different continuity. Batman's villains and supporting cast were therefore off-limits to the "Justice League" team.

Heads-up, landlubbers. This article contains major spoilers for "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."
Let's talk about trash. No, that's not a reference to the pretty dismal reviews for the latest "Aquaman" sequel, which has ended the DC Extended Universe with more of a whimper than a bang. (Although /Film's review by Rafael Motamayor generally lands on the more positive end of the spectrum.) Rather, this is in reference to one major oversight from the 2018 movie that director James Wan has finally set right this time around. For all its fairly obvious missteps, "The Lost Kingdom" actually improves on its predecessor in one specific way that few DC films -- and superhero movies in general -- have ever even attempted. And it has to do with pesky humans making this world a worse and worse place to live by the minute.

Back in 2011, DC Comics went through a line-wide re-launch known as ‘New 52,’ which streamlined their releases and revamped the entire overarching narrative to attract newer readers. The re-launch was marked by an unnecessarily edgy sensibility and mistreatment of established characters, which ruined a number of fan favorites and alienated long-time readers in the process. Eventually, the creators had to accept the mistakes involving the re-launch, and another restructuring was done in the form of ‘DC Rebirth’ in 2016, which brought things back to their past state. This is the same situation DC’s cinematic universe has found itself in, as Dceu’s muddled, directionless roadmap has resulted in its end, and Dcu, formed by James Gunn, is about to begin its journey.
James Wan’s Aquaman was among the few silver linings of the Dceu, which, despite having a straightforward cookie-cutter plotline and generic characters, managed to become extremely entertaining and...

“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is here.
The superhero sequel follows Aquaman (Jason Momoa), as he deals with parenthood and the threat of Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), who is out for revenge after Aquaman killed his father, a dangerous pirate. Manta aligns himself with a dark magic that could kill Aquaman’s underwater kingdom and the surface world as well. It’s up to Aquaman and his ne’er-do-well brother Orm (Patrick Wilson) to save the planet and stop the villainous Manta.
“Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” serves as the final film in the so-called Snyderverse, a group of interconnected stories that began with Snyder’s “Man of Steel” and continued with his “Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice” and “Justice League.” (Other movies included in this universe: “Wonder Woman” and its sequel as well as this summer’s “The Flash.”) While this marks the end of the road for those movies,...

Warning: this post contains major spoilers for "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom."
After five years, the best superhero movie of 2018 that did not win an Oscar is finally back with a sequel. "Aquaman" remains a high point of the Dceu, a fantastical adventure movie with great worldbuilding, cool performances, an excellent horror scene, and some of the most bonkers moments in the superhero genre — like a drums-playing octopus, an army of crab people, and Julie Andrews playing an aquatic kaiju.
Now, "Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom" doubles down on everything its predecessor did by letting James Wan go fully nuts. It expands the world of Aquaman by bringing in a mythical threat and introducing DC's answer to Mordor, it has a poignant story about the current threat to the environment, and it also gives us a fun road trip movie with Jason Momoa and Patrick Wilson as bickering brothers that once fought to the death.

Plot: Aquaman (Jason Momoa) finds his peaceful reign as King of Atlantis cut short when his former enemy, Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), is imbued with the power of the evil Black Trident. Bent on destroying Aquaman’s family, our hero must turn to an unlikely ally, his half-brother Orm (Patrick Wilson).
Review: Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom has been a surprisingly controversial sequel. One would think that because it’s following up a billion-dollar smash and reuniting a well-loved director in James Wan with a well-loved leading man in Jason Momoa, it would have been a slam dunk. But, the film has faced a staggering amount of behind-the-scenes drama, including reshoots, release date delays, and lousy test screenings (which began two years ago). Plus, it’s been through no less than three studio regimes, and that’s not even counting the fact that one of the stars, Amber Heard,...

Released in 2018, the first Aquaman movie delivered a refreshing take on the DC Extended Universe, infusing the superhero genre with a blend of high camp, stunning visuals, and oodles of surrealist humour. Fast forward five years, and director James Wan returns with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, a sequel that takes the aquatic hero on a new, if not exactly as exciting, journey.
The film opens with Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) leading a dual life, balancing his responsibilities as the King of Atlantis and his adventures on land. Married to Mera (Amber Heard) and raising a son, Arthur Jr., Aquaman faces the challenges of royal duties and bureaucratic conflicts within the Atlantean council.
The plot takes a dark turn as Arthur’s nemesis, David Kane, resurfaces with a vengeful agenda and a plot to destroy his one true enemy. Arthur is then forced to team up with his estranged brother...

In Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom, directed by James Wan and written by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, Jason Momoa reprises his role as Arthur Curry, diving back into the deep and turbulent waters of superhero cinema. With an ensemble cast including Amber Heard, Patrick Wilson, Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, Randall Park, Nicole Kidman and Temuera Morrison, the film navigates through a series of high-stakes conflicts, both personal and global. However, it’s not just the seas that are stormy; the film itself walks a messy path of narrative and visual execution.
Arthur aka Aquaman’s latest adventure kicks off with him recounting a daring hostage rescue to his son, Arthur Jr., followed by a montage of his life post-first film. As king of Atlantis and Queen Mera’s (Heard) husband, he navigates royal duties and family life, discovering his son’s unique ability to communicate with fish. Meanwhile, his nemesis, David Hyde (Mateen II) aka Manta,...

It’s fitting that “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” is about a dying world that can’t be bothered to save itself, as this goofy but half-hearted sequel — a damp shadow of James Wan’s deliriously fun 2018 original, which grossed more than a billion dollars at the height of the superhero boom — is the orphaned child of a cinematic universe that was abandoned at sea while this movie was still in the womb. Greenlit at a time when it seemed like Jason Momoa’s Atlantean surf-himbo might be light enough to buoy the rest of the Dceu, “Lost Kingdom” is being released in theaters as the product of a conglomerate that didn’t exist when production began, and under the banner of a newly formed studio that didn’t have any use for it by the time production ended. For DC Films, Aquaman was the future; for James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Studios,...

Despite sporadic efforts to repair the disastrous and confusing continuity of DC Extended Universe, it was doomed to fail thanks to multiple problems which plagued the shared universe ranging from misinterpretation of source material, interference in creative vision to controversy surrounding actors. The early signs of mismanagement under the contemporary WB regime were apparent during the divisive reception of the first phase of Dceu, and as a result, the universe almost crash-landed after the poor reception of Justice League (Joss Whedon version) back in 2017. However, the one movie that almost single-handedly turned the proverbial tide in the favor of Dceu was James Wan’s Aquaman, which to date stands as the franchise’s most entertaining and highest-grossing entry. In a franchise where a crossover movie of three premier characters couldn’t meet expectations, Aquaman, formerly known as the bottom of ‘Merman’ jokes, became its savior.

I’ll always remember my first introduction to James Wan. It was after Saw‘s success and heading into supernatural territory with Insidious. It was one of the first “set visits” I enjoyed attending – the opportunity to report on the film while it was in production. And it was a joy. Instantly, I found myself impressed with everything about the man. Mr. Wan is a wonderfully talented individual who manages to tackle something weird and wild like Malignant and then create a big-budget megahit like Aquaman.
With the upcoming release of Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom is hitting theatres on December 22nd, we had the the chance to have a quick chat with Mr. Wan. While our time to talk was short, James opened up about continuing with the characters he featured in Aquaman. The filmmaker discussed the look of the film and how they created a different visual landscape.

“I’m gonna kill Aquaman and everything he holds dear,” promises Black Manta in the trailer for Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom. “I’m gonna murder his family and burn his kingdom to ash.”
Such boasts are par for the course among supervillains like Black Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), and most people watching the trailer dismiss it as usual bad guy bluster. After all, the first Aquaman movie earned over $1 billion in 2018 because of its lighthearted tone. Director James Wan and writers David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick and Will Beall, working off a story they wrote with Wan and comics scribe Geoff Johns, crafted a fun script that took advantage of Aquaman’s role in the popular imagination and star Jason Momoa‘s undeniable charisma. Many of you probably had Superman, or Batman, as your favorite initial superhero. Me, I had Aquaman. Yeah, when I was young, many of my buddies didn’t get my appreciation for the orange and green-dressed blonde dude who could communicate with fish. But as a massive Jaws fan when I was too young, I thought it would be rad to chat with a shark or a dolphin. And that fish guy could do that. And now, thanks to James Wan and Jason Momoa, we have a new vision of the deep sea-dwelling hero. After a few years since Wan’s original Aquaman sent audiences into an underwater adventure, we finally have its follow-up with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.
Recently, we accepted an invitation to get an early look at the new trailer, with an introduction from the man himself, Mr. James Wan. After the trailer reveal, Mr. Wan...

Just over three months before its Dec. 20 theatrical release, “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom” has its first trailer.
The underwater actioner features Jason Momoa’s Aquaman reluctantly teaming with his previously deposed brother (Patrick Wilson) to deal with the return of Yahya Abdul-Mateen II’s Black Manta. Contrary to what the internet has been spouting for three years, Amber Heard is indeed back as Mera.
As with the previous CinemaCon sizzle reel, we see at least one shot of Mera in action. The trailer promises a jaw-droppingly gorgeous fantasy spectacle, with crisp, clear and colorful underwater photography. At a glance, James Wan isn’t handing over the underwater franchise crown to James Cameron without a fight.
Five years is a long time between installments. However, it’s only a year later than initially planned prior to Covid-related production delays. The plan, way back when, was to have ‘Aquaman 2’ open...
