Beatles anniversary got you wondering how the group evolved? This understated take on Lennon's adolescence could be for you
Director: Sam Taylor-Wood
Entertainment grade: B+
History grade: A–
John Lennon was born in Liverpool in 1940. He formed his first band, The Quarrymen, at the age of 15 in 1956. They went on to become The Beatles.
Education
Young John Lennon (Aaron Taylor-Johnson) isn't doing well at his school, Quarry Bank High. "You're going nowhere," snarls his headmaster. "Is nowhere for geniuses, sir?" replies Lennon. "Because then I probably do belong there." The film is correct that Lennon was a hopeless pupil, going on to fail all of his O-Levels. He lives with his Aunt Mimi (Kristin Scott-Thomas) and Uncle George in a decent and moderately happy middle-class home, until George unexpectedly keels over. Then John's wayward mother, Julia (Anne-Marie Duff), re-enters the picture, and things start to get murky.

The tragedy is that John Lennon graced the earth for but forty years. But a perfect storm of brilliance, social consciousness, personal pain and populist embers whipped around Lennon, leading the confused lad from Northern England to fit more life into those years than perhaps anyone else in the 20th century. For that, on what would have been his 71st birthday, we celebrate.
Born as German bombs rained down on Liverpool in 1940, Lennon was born to Alf and Julia Lennon, a forbidden couple that flouted class convention in a still hierarchical society. That, years later, their son would be a self-styled Working Class Hero seems, in retrospect, predetermined by the scandal into which he was born.
That awareness of the economic and social lines dug deep into Scouse society was aided by his unconventional childhood, which kicked off in earnest after he was forced, in a deep act of cruelty,...

"Wanted (2008)" star James McAvoy and his actress wife Anne-Marie Duff will soon be first time parents. On Tuesday, January 26, the couple's spokesman Rupert Fowler issued a statement confirming that 39-year-old Duff is pregnant with 30-year-old McAvoy's first child.
"We are happy to confirm that James McAvoy and Anne-Marie Duff are expecting their first child," Fowler stated. No other detail on how far along Duff is and when the baby is due has been disclosed though. The rep said, "we have no further comment or information at this time."
Prior to the pregnancy announcement, Duff who plays Julia Lennon in "Nowhere Boy" has expressed her concern that she may not be able to have babies due to her age. "I would love to have a baby," she confessed. "I'm not putting it off but unfortunately bodies don't work that way."

Anne Marie - Duff, who starred in the biopic Nowhere Boy, emerged victorious at this year's British Independent Film Awards to win Best Supporting Actress for her role as Julia Lennon. Anne told us how she never imagined she would win her category, which included Rosamund Pike for her role in An Education, Kerry Fox for Bright Star, Kierston Wareing for Fish Tank and fellow Nowhere Boy star Kristen Scott Thomas. Talking about her time on the film, Anne describes how generous Sam Taylor - Wood was a director, making a huge effort to connect with the actors and the characters. Anne also explains how from the moment she read the screenplay, she was desperate to get invovled with Nowhere Boy - and we (as well as the Bifa jury) are very pleased she did.

One of the most exciting news I've read a few days ago is about the upcoming film entitled Nowhere Boy (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1266029/). It tells the story of social activist, pop icon and Beatles lead singer John Lennon. The film is based on a Memoir by Julia Baird (http://www.lennon.net/reflections/julia_baird.shtml) who is John Lennon’s half sister. I enjoyed last year's Across The Universe (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0445922/), which indirectly paid homage to the Beatles by celebrating their songs, and was raring for more. This upcoming movie is definitely one of my most anticipated! In this article, tMF takes a closer look at Julia Baird's Memoir and discuss casting posibilities on who should play John Lennon. - - - - - - The Book: Imagine This - Growing up with my brother John Lennon: Fans of the...
