James Murphy, Flying Lotus, Carl Craig, Skrillex, 2 Chainz and Maya Jane Coles are among the artists set to perform at Detroit’s Movement Festival. Held at Hart Plaza over Memorial Day Weekend, May 28-30, this year’s dance music extravaganza will feature more than 100 acts. Tickets are available now. Typically held annually in downtown Detroit, the fest marks its return for the first time since 2019, with its 2020 and 2021 editions canceled due to the pandemic.

Amsterdam Dance Event is truly one of the biggest Edm festivals in the world. The Netherlands based club crawl will touch down with more than 300 events at over a hundred venues, while the festival will host an excess of 2,000 DJs over its duration. That list is only getting better too, with the announcement of the phase 3 lineup.
Joining the roster as keynoters for the conference portion of the event are techno veteran Richie Hawtin and DJ Laidback Luke. On the music front, a number of new acts have been added to the roster, including Netsky, Carl Craig and DJ Jazzy Jeff.
This year’s Amsterdam Dance Event will also feature some new additions, including Ade Sleep / Over, a camping experience hosted at the Ndsm Wharf that will offer a string of panels and performances, and Ade Hackathon, an initiative aimed at developers and designers to put their skills to the test in the festival environment.

Amsterdam Dance Event is the Netherlands’ answer to electronic music conferences like International Music Summit and Winter Music Conference, so the lineups for the numerous parties it consists of can give you an idea of where the industry is headed. And, as with other 2016 festivals, house and techno have seen increased presence on the event rosters.
In addition to obligatory mainstagers like Hardwell and Martin Garrix, artists such as Maya Jane Coles, Nicole Moudaber, Richie Hawtin and Joris Voorn have been confirmed for various Amsterdam Dance Event parties. Aside from performers, a number of speakers will make appearances over the course of the weekend as well – including Kickstarter’s head of music Molly Neuman and Def Jam CEO Steve Bartel.

If the buzz is any indicator, Edm is on its way out – but anyone who attended the 2016 edition of Electric Daisy Carnival (Edc) Las Vegas last weekend would likely tell you otherwise. Insomniac Events organized a magnificent 20th anniversary celebration for its flagship festival, going to great lengths to ensure that those in attendance would look back on the landmark event with a special fondness.
After all, there were quite a few of them to witness what took place. Edc 20’s organizers reported that three-day attendance broke the 400,000 mark for the second time in the festival’s history, although it took two months longer for this year’s edition of the festival to sell out than that of last year. The festival nearly came to a close with zero reported fatalities for the first time in three years, but...

Over the last week, La based club Cure And The Cause stirred up some controversy in the dance music scene by banning laptops from the DJ booth. Club owner Kenny Summit justified the decision with some notorious statements, telling laptop DJs to “learn the tools of the trade already.” It’s just the latest episode of a constant dialogue about what defines “true DJing” and what technology is appropriate for DJs to use.
Seasoned DJs Richie Hawtin and Seth Troxler took to social media recently to weigh in on the issue, with each offering up a different perspective in response to the controversy. Richie Hawtin criticized the venue’s decision to ban laptops, stating “Most ridiculous rule ever!Stifling creativity by limiting an artists own personal approach is a step backwards.”

After its tenth anniversary, there’s no denying that Movement has lived up to its name. The Detroit music festival once again succeeded in drawing the techno elite from every corner of the globe to celebrate the genre in the city of its birthplace, but this year’s edition in particular served as a special homecoming of sorts.
After all, the extra year digit was but one milestone reached by the techno community this past week. Shortly before the event took place, Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan declared the week of May 23rd-30th Detroit Techno Week. Following that, a business report presented a couple of days later at the International Music Summit in Ibiza revealed that the genre surpassed all others in Beatport downloads last year. Nowhere else in the world does techno quite like Germany, which is why Mannheim festival Time Warp has remained a staple of Southwest Germany’s music scene for as long as it has. Case in point: The events organizers have released the official lineup for its 2016 edition, which reads like a veritable who’s who of dance music’s original “other” genre.
Richie Hawtin, Carl Cox and Dubfire are but a few of the veteran artists on the lineup. Adam Beyer and Nicole Moudaber will bring some of the Drumcode energy to the occasion (although most artists who belong to the label are considered too mainstream by true techno elitists), and The Martinez Brothers and Jamie Jones are even likely to incorporate a little house groove into their performances for those seeking some semblance of variety.

For its 2016 edition, Bestival has finally announced its theme: The Future. While their announcement video takes cues from the gritty synths of the 80’s, we’re certainly going to get caught inside the bass monsoons of modern production. Playing effortlessly into the year’s theme, Major Lazer, Hot Chip, and The Cure have been announced as headliners for the first wave lineup. However, no future themed event would be complete without the avant garde reaches of Animal Collective, and the accompanying house of Eats Everything, Danny Byrd, Richie Hawtin, TS5, and Skream.
Bestival Curator Rob de Bank says, “Prepare yourselves for a Bestival unlike any other with futuristic new stages, and as ever it’s a broad church of music from every decade and every genre.” Bestival will take place from September 8th to the 11th, and you can find more information on their website. You’re not going to want to miss this one.

At long last, DJ Mag has unveiled their top 100 DJs list of 2015. While this year’s results made for a predictable, cross section of the mainstream Edm talent pool’s most accomplished echelon, perhaps nothing spoke to the state of the scene as much as the #1 entry.
Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike secured the #1 spot for the first time in their career, all but proving that contemporary dance music is more manufactured than it’s ever been at any point throughout its history. The two artists are famous for enlisting the services of ghostwriters like Maarten Vorwerk to assist in their productions, and engaged in notoriously aggressive marketing campaigns to drum up votes.
More than ever, the results simply prove that the rankings are more for which artists have the biggest marketing budgets than anything else.

French techno virtuoso Gesaffelstein has become a hot commodity over the past year or so not only due to his unique, avant-garde sound, but also his high-profile tie-ins – and his soundtrack for French film drama Maryland (which also goes by the title Disorder) will make for a novel means of putting his music in the ears of an even wider audience. After a momentous countdown, he’s released the first track from the effort in the form of “A Pledge.”
The track features Gesaffelstein’s distinctly French take on the less-is-more sensibilities of second-wave Detroit techno artists like Richie Hawtin. Sound design elements that are but a step up from midi quality tell a seven-minute story of serene dissonance, building to a suspenseful peak before feathering back down into the shadows.

Billed as “Escape from Wonderland” or “Escape: All Hallows Eve” in previous editions, the two-day event takes place from October 30th to October 31st – so Hard Day of the Dead attendees could still feasibly attend a day of Escape, or vice versa. Nobody ever called Kid Rock, Detroit’s bare-chested musical ambassador to the world, a tame guy.
“I mean, he gets paid to drink Jim Beam.” says Jeremy "Jd" Deputat, who photographed I’m Kid Rock, What’s Your Excuse?, a large format 176-page glossy photography book following the singer-songwriter's summer 2011 ”Born Free” tour. “I just never really went home.”

If you want to find a happy place, may we suggest Ultra Music Festival? There's nary a frown at the whirling neon Edm bacchanal, which just concluded its first of two consecutive weekend takeovers of Biscayne Boulevard and Bayfront Park with the likes of Swedish House Mafia, Kaskade, and Richie Hawtin.
There's also not a lot of clothing, as you'll see in our gallery below. But what's even more striking than the fashion -- or at least comes close -- is how well-run the festival is. With seven stages, dozens of major acts to juggle at any one time, more than 100,000 attendees, and a small village's worth of bathrooms, venders, carts, tents, and security, Ultra, in its 15th year, is a marvel of organization and runs incredibly smoothly, especially considering its tight footprint Downtown.

Techno icon Richie Hawtin noted at the beginning of his "in conversation" SXSW panel with Edm superstar Joel "Deadmau5" Zimmerman that they were both Canadians, but then they proved it when asked what it was about Canada that had resulted in two of the biggest names in electronic music coming form the country. They both replied, "Tim Horton's doughnuts and the double-double."
"I had one across from my studio," Hawtin added.
"Really, I have one across my studio, too," said Zimmerman, noting sardonically to the crowd, "There's a Tim Horton's on every fucking corner in Canada."
But if they fulfilled Canada's doughnuts-and-coffee-loving cliché at the conference, they certainly didn't pull off our nice polite stereotype later that night when the pair delivered an unprecedented joint-dj set, not quite a back 'n' forth tag-team, but one in which both men were constantly working with each other's beats, jamming out two hours of dark,...

Once upon a time, the success of Canadian indie musicians at SXSW music festival in Austin, TX was news. The rise of Broken Social Scene, The Constantines, Metric, Stars and their ilk was often traced to a series of hype-building showcases down south that introduced our northern rockers to the rest of the world.
Flash forward a decade and SXSW is kicking off its 27th annual music festival with a series of showcases and parties that just happen to be headlined by Canadians, though the names on their passports no longer matters.
Media Temple’s big Interactive closing party, intended to embed the web-hosting company’s “dedication to creativity and innovation” in the brains of drunken partygoers, boasts an unprecedented joint-dj set between techno legend Richie Hawtin and Edm impresario Deadmau5, both of whom are also doing a panel session earlier in the day to talk tech. The nation's hippest folks descend on Austin each year for South By Southwest, a three-pronged festival that aims to bring forth the best, newest and brightest players in music, movies and something called "interactive."
Tuesday marks the beginning of SXSW Music, which features everything from panels (see Richie Hawtin and deadmau5 talk about why Edm isn't Edm, or watch Kendrick Lamar od the dance with RapRadar editor Elliott Wilson) to parties (here, look for A-Trak or big brands like Spotify) and showcases (where labels essentially pitch their newest artists at concerts anchored by heavier-hitters who can pull crowds).
There are hundreds of bands and artists hoping to make their mark in Austin, and each of them (probably) deserves at least one listen. But here at HuffPost Entertainment, we know it's unlikely that anyone who isn't in the music "industry" has the time or interest do all that sifting. So sift we did: Ahead,...

It's still January, but already Detroit is looking forward to a weekend in the middle of May, when sweaty music lovers will crowd Hart Plaza for the city's annual electronic music festival, Movement.
The thumping bass and substance-fueled (so we've heard) event, which will take place May 25, 26 and 27, has already released the Phase One lineup. And there's some very notable names, like Carl Craig and Derrick May.
Tickets are already available on the Movement website, where they're counting down the days (114, in case you were wondering), hours, minutes and seconds until the sound of techno techno fills the air. Relive the madness from last year -- and get ready for Movement 2013 -- with help from the pulse-quickening trailer posted above. A text list of Phase One performers follows, if you're into that sort of thing. Are you looking forward to the electronic music festival, or will you be avoiding Hart Plaza?...

With a new expanded two-weekend format, a massive new main stage structure, and a big 15th anniversary to celebrate, it was obvious Ultra Music Festival would be going big for 2013.
Instead, it went massive. The just-released Phase 2 lineup reveals Ultra will host its most diverse and thorough lineup yet this March in Miami's Bayfront Park: crowd faves like Laidback Luke, Afrojack, Calvin Harris, and Dirty South are back, but the lineup also includes a slew of live acts including Snoop Dogg and Sleigh Bells.
"What we've achieved with this edition's ocean of talent and stage production is we feel unprecedented," said Ultra founder, CEO and president Russell Faibisch. "As the industry we work in continues to explode, with so much talent emerging and the taste of our consumer changing in the process, diversity was key."

This Ides of March, the only thing getting assassinated is millions of festivalgoers' eardrums at the now extended Ultra Music Festival in Miami's Bayfront Park.
Organizers are doubling down on the pleasure and fun, hosting not one but two weekends of Edm. But can the music fest possibly top last year's Skrillex set, Madonna's "Molly" debacle, and throwback performances by Kraftwork and New Order?
Time to break out the glow necklaces and shutter shades, and find out. Ultra's phase one lineup has been released for 2013, announcing 13 DJs and 13 live acts in addition to the previously announced DeadMaud5 and Swedish House Mafia, who will play both weekends as part of their farewell performance.

There's already plenty of untz-untz buzz that acts like Major Lazer, Crystal Castles, and Hot Chip are saddling up besides the standard set of mainstay performers that includes Tiesto and David Guetta.

Moogfest 2012 is approaching. The unusual music festival takes up the experimental spirit of electronic music innovator Bob Moog and pushes it into even more far-reaching nooks and crannies of the ever-expanding genre. Moog, (which rhymes with Vogue, however much we wish it rhymed with "moo"), invented the Moog synthesizer, the first voltage-controlled subtractive synthesizer to utilize a keyboard as a controller.
Moog began a career in the 1950s as an electronic music engineer at the ripe age of 19. Twenty years later he had created the first music synthesizers that were portable, affordable and easily distributable. In a 2000 interview Moog said, "I'm an engineer. I see myself as a toolmaker and the musicians are my customers. They use my tools." One of our favorite accomplishments of his was creating analog effect pedals he dubbed "moogerfoogers." It doesn't get much better than that.

It happened, guys. After creeping into the Edm sphere last year and swanning into a relationship with “superstar” Afrojack en route — Paris Hilton finally got her wish and made her debut as a DJ. This happened at Sao Paulo, Brazil’s Pop Music Festival over the weekend and she wore a puzzling black and sequined basque with fingerless gloves and bedazzled headphones for the occasion. Of course she did. She also “played” her new track with Afrojack, Last Night but accidentally cued Rihanna‘s We Found Love, in the beginning, and tried to cover it up by singing. By singing badly, we mean. Of course she did. Of Course, she did. Watch it here at your own risk.
