David S. Goyer, best known as the screenwriter who has given the world grittier takes on Batman and Superman, is also a director from time to time, and is the man who got the behind the camera for "Blade: Trinity." It's been five years since his last directorial effort, 2009's "The Unborn," but he's getting a new gig lined up. THR reports that he'll get behind the camera of an adaptation of Patrick Lee's novel, "The Breach." Justin Rhodes is penning the script about "a corrupt ex-cop who is trying to get his life back in order when he discovers a crashed plane in the Alaska wilderness. The first lady is among those dead in the wreckage. That sets off an adventure featuring a beautiful survivor, assassins, a secret organization, alien technology and an end-of-the-world scenario." And oh yeah, Lee's book is the first in a trilogy (of course...

Zack Snyder's Man of Steel is upon us. To help keep the excitement levels up here's an awesome fan-made opening title sequence created by Will and Tale. I was really impressed by what they came up with even though it kind of has a different tone and setting from what we've seen of Snyder's movie. The video was sent to us by Patrick Lee who says,
It's the life of Clark Kent told through the voices of the world. This is a passion project we pursued in our free time for the past 3 months. No pre-existing Man of Steel footage was used. We created all the 2D/3D animations, compositing, in-camera article Ui and designs, voiceover recordings, etc. Even the score was composed exclusively for this project.
I think you'll like what you see so check it out!

You might think he'd want a break from Varoom and Kersmash after four instalments of the Fast and Furious franchise, but Justin Lin is now attached to another action thriller. The as-yet-untitled and not-yet-published Patrick Lee novel he's acquired is intended as the first in a new series. The book and its planned follow-ups centre on Sam Dryden, an ex-special forces operative who now walks the world and gets in adventures (or something). The first one sees Dryden on the run with a "mysterious young girl who is not quite what she seems", as dogged government agents pursue.A bit of Bourne, a bit of Safe, a bit of this, a bit of that... This "not quite what she seems" business may hint at a more fantastical direction than your average Jack Reacher though: Patrick Lee's previous airport doorstops do Da Vinci Code-style globe-trotting and artefect-chasing, but also incorporate sci-fi elements like dimensional rifts.

Given his writing credits on superhero epics like The Dark Knight, Man of Steel, and even the first three Blade movies, David Goyer is no stranger to high profile filmmaking. Which is experience that should serve him well as he transitions over from being a writer to someone who’s doing more work as a producer. Especially considering the latest project he has a hand in putting together is an adaptation of Patrick Lee’s epic end-of-the-world thriller, “The Breach,” a film that Goyer is producing alongside Transformers’ Lorenzo di Bonaventura. What exactly is The Breach going to be about? Well, if you’ve read the book you know, but for those of us ignorant on the subject, the studio seems to be giving the simple synopsis that it’s a story about, “an ex-cop who races to prevent an artifact from bringing about an apocalypse.” Sounds like bad stuff already, but...

You’ll already know David Goyer through Christopher Nolan’s Batman films, but with that trilogy all wrapped up, the producer/story writer/screenwriter has seemingly found his next project (after Godzilla and Man Of Steel) in Patrick Lee’s novel The Breach. He’s set to work on it with Transformers producer Lorenza di Bonaventura, who definitely has one hell of a name.
The Breach is one of those airport paperbacks that makes for fun and efficient reading, though the plot is extremely pulpy and unbelievably insane. On one hand, it’s one of those artefact huntin’, globe trottin’ adventures that there are just about ten million of… and then, on the other hand, it’s all science-fiction and time rifts. The main character is an ex-cop who has taken to a quiet life in Alaska (his name is “Travis Chase”, of course), but his peaceful existence is ruined...

Though he has only been producing movies since 2005, Lorenzo di Bonaventura has quickly established himself as one of the biggest blockbuster names in Hollywood. In addition to the Transformers movies he is also behind G.I. Joe as well as Red - and is even part of the upcoming Jack Ryan reboot. And now it looks as though he may have found his next big project. Di Bonaventura and David S. Goyer have teamed up to produce an adaptation of The Breach, based on the novel by Patrick Lee. Variety says that the plot follows a former police officer in a race against time as he must stop an artifact from being used to bring about the end of the world. Justin Rhodes, who has a couple of indies under his belt, has been hired to write the script, but the trade mentions that the movie version will "diverge from...

Lorenzo di Bonaventura and David Goyer are teaming to produce a feature adaptation of Patrick Lee's The Breach . Published in 2009, it is officially described as follows: Travis Chase, a man putting his life back together after fifteen years in prison, takes a solo hike into the Alaskan Rockies. He's just looking for a quiet place to think about his future, but what he finds is trouble: a 747, downed in remote wilderness, the wreck impossibly undiscovered by authorities. Those aboard are dead, though not because of the crash. They've been shot. This aircraft, along with the terrifying object it was transporting, is only the beginning for Travis. Within hours he finds himself at the center of a violent conflict that spans the globe, and a secret war that dates back three...

This week’s Reviewing the Mail begins with a long-distance shout-out to Ellen Wright, who started at Wiley the first week I did, but has since moved up and on to working in Publicity with the fine folks at Orbit Us. My pipeline of Yen Press titles — Yen being the manga arm of Orbit — had dwindled recently, probably because I hadn’t reviewed many of their books in that same period [1], but I now have a batch of them here, and I hope they’ll continue. (Though, again, I imagine I’ll need to review some of those books for Yen to want to keep sending me books — it’s really not difficult to see how this works, if you’re capable of consider other people’s point of view.)
So hooray for Yen, which will be the bulk of this week’s post. But, before I get into that,...
